Although the colder weather has moved in, I love that golf can be played all year round in Colorado. In the mood to shake up our usual routine, we recently played 9 holes on the regulation course and found this gem of a place to be downright awesome. Here's why: STAR #1 = Booking tee times is insanely easy to do online through the City of Denver golf site. Tee times range from starting at sun up to sun down and are consistently open throughout the day! A must - sign up for a membership card (it's free!) because each payment towards a round of golf equates to points, which allow for freebies throughout the year! STAR #2 = Because this course doesn't boast a Par 3 course, rates can be a bit pricy especially in the peak morning hours on weekends. However, if you like tee times bright and early (90 minutes of the course opening - any day of the week!) golfers pay just $20/person which includes all green fees, and a cart! Talk about a killer deal! STAR #3= The course itself is gorgeous! Pristine greens, a clubhouse rich in history with all the charm, and wide open views of the mountains, what's not to love? STAR #4 = The Pro Shop showcases the history of this course, offers a wide variety of clothing and retail options for purchase and has the nicest staff to date. Well that's some great customer service if I ever heard one. Called the shop, think the name of the person was Erik. Tried to cancel one of my tee times that was booked for two. My buddy can't make it and I was simply asking for him to cancel one of the tee time slots or open it up so that it can be grabbed by someone and if not, we pay for it. Mind you, it's way outside the 24 hour window. Instead of listening he ignored what I was sayin that I could not cancel or edit the booking since it was for TWO people. He insisted, that I could do it not even listening to me when I was trying to say I could not do it myself. Which is why I called in the first place. What a way to make a customer feel small. Maybe he was just too busy which I understand. Oh well - cancelled the entire reservation. Hope that makes him happy; now you lost a booking for two when it could've just been one person. Dismal public golf course experience. Conditions are fair. Staff is rude, in my experiences, time after time. Perhaps they were courteous when Eisenhower played here, but that was decades ago. Won't be back. For this to be located so close to the renowned and celebrated Cherry Hills Village, it is a terribly disappointing outcome for this part of town. read more

I like playing Wellshire and so does my husband, when I can find tee-times available this is where he wants to play. Course is well maintained, pace of play is good, rarely see any marshalls out trying to push people. I like their little drink shack/restroom stop out by hole 5/14 and the restrooms are very clean. Wellshire G.C. Is my favorite of the city courses. I have been playing this since I was a kid and with the exception of hole #5 becoming a par 4 and #10 going through design changes at the bottom of the hill it has remained the same. My favorite holes on this course are #7 on the front and #18 on the back. The clubhouse is historic and home to many weddings with it's gorgeous views of Mount Evans! I could totally have a wedding reception here if my spouse agreed. They are currently in the process of draining the lake which has been the driving range home for as long as I can remember. Soon it will be a a regular driving range with nets. As far as golf courses go, this is Denver's best. This Don Ross design will challenge golfers of all abilities and provides giant trees and challenging greens. Sometimes play can be slow, but yesterday, a Saturday, our foursome finished in 4 hours and stopped at the food stand twice! What did I eat? On the front I had a juicy brat with mustard, that would be tempting to any Vegan out there! On the back I had a hot dog with mustard, which was also juicy and tasty. You won't find a salad bar at the snack shack so plan accordingly. I save my dog days of summer for golf courses and baseball stadiums! I'm all FORE! them. read more

If I could rate this golf course as a 0 star for customer service, and a 5 star for the course itself in the same review, I would. Summary below - Customer service (0 stars) - There are no words to explain how unwelcome myself, my partner, and our 2 close friends felt as we played here. We arrived to the front desk with a cheery attitude, very excited to play this course for the very first time, and were welcomed with a woman at the front desk who was utterly uninterested in helping us. She seemed distracted and looked at us with such a sour look of disdain. No idea why - we were dressed professionally, had a cheery attitude, and even agreed to move up our tee time since the weather was bad (rainy day) and other groups cancelled. We kindly paid for our 18 holes and our carts and tried to shake off the bad feelings we got from this woman, since we were new to this course and were so excited to play together as a foursome, as we frequently do. While we were playing the 15th hole, the same woman from the front desk who checked us out drove (in a golf cart) onto our hole in the middle of our game, to frantically inform us that we were behind schedule and we needed to finish up our game right then & there... basically, because it was a Sunday and the course was closing up for the evening and there was maintenance going on and insinuated that we were inconveniencing everyone. Which was unfounded because there were at least 2 other groups that were either ahead of us or behind us at the time, and we were not the only ones on the course. This frustrated us because not only did we pay to play 18 holes and to enjoy our leisurely, rainy golf Sunday, but we moved up our tee time AND we let two groups move ahead of us throughout our game because we noticed that they were playing at a faster pace, and we wanted to be kind and courteous. She then proceeded to tell us that we didn't even reserve a game for 18 holes, and that we only paid for 9. This was incorrect - we politely informed her that this was not the case and that we had just paid a large amount of money to be able to play 18 holes with a cart, and we intended to finish our game and get what we paid for. This experience left a very bad taste in our mouths, and despite my overall admiration for the course itself (review posted below), I would not come back here. My friends and I are professional, courteous, respectful, and know how to act on a golf course and to be met with such disrespect was something we've never experienced before and was very unpleasant. *** Course/ atmosphere/ design/ aesthetic (5 stars!)- When I walked onto this course on a dreary, gloomy Sunday I felt like I was immediately transported to an English countryside. It is gorgeous here, albeit a bit loud from the traffic nearby but that was easy to tune out. As a beginner, I love how straight and narrow all the holes were, although at times we experienced a few "rogue" balls from other holes/ players fly nearby to us. I also really liked the variation between Par 3, 4, and 5 holes. It was a very fun course to play and visually it was very appealing. Wellshire golf? Maybe three stars? Wellshire Golf's restrooms? EEEEEEEEEW! Someone seriously needs to buy this property off of the city, drop a few million into upgrades and renovations, and make it nice again. The bathrooms reek of piss/ammonia and stale farts, with the noisiest fans on the planet (which I only noticed because they didn't seem to be working). That said, the staff was very friendly, so plus one star for that. I would recommend taking your golfing dollars elsewhere until the fix this place up. read more

While I was working for Arizona State University's Memorial Union, I was selected to attend a conference at the University of Denver. Wellshire golf course was just a few miles away so I grabbed 2 of my student workers and called for a tee time. When we got there, the staff was so great! We got rental clubs, cart, balls and gear all set up and immediately sent out to play. The course is south of downtown, close to I-25 and fairly easy to get to. It's an old course with beautiful, mature trees and rolling hills. As it was mid October when we were in Colorado, the weather was a bit chilly and I really didn't have any cold weather playing gear. But the sun came out and the day was absolutely perfect. Wellshire is carefully laid out and has a distinct old world charm. I would imagine it would be the site of many special events due to the beauty of the grounds and the charm of the buildings. The course was a bit challenging. I didn't break 90 but my 2 student employees crushed their scores. Serves me right for trying to keep up with kids 35 years my junior. The high altitude definitely allows the ball to fly!! Give this course a try. You'll love the old world charm and the beautiful course. read more

Was having a good experience taking my fiance for her first time playing 18, and the first Starter on duty at hole 1 was amazing. Once we finished the 9th hole we were back at the start. There was a new Starter on duty, the old crusty, short guy with a mustache. As we finished the 9th, he sprinted towards us and began to yell at us for pace of play. Throwing his hands in the air, and shouting. It was competely out of line, utterly unprofessional, and felt totally confrontational. We were at most 15 minutes behind, but a single warning to get us to pick it up would have sufficed. Also, we were losing our 4th golfer after the 9th hole, so we knew it would pick up pace. Instead he continued to berate us. After a few holes, we actually managed to gain some ground to the point that the group behind no longer had to wait. However, We just couldn't get shake the thought of that incompetent imp schreeching in our faces.As a result, our day was so ruined, we had to leave after the 14th hole. It was my fiancé's first time doing 18, and it's crusty old bags like that starter are the exact reasons why people are hesitant to try golf in the first place. We knew pace was in issue, but was trying our best to keep it up and felt rushed the whole time. There were times we we were also waiting on the tee-box for the group ahead of us, so we really were moving as quickly as possible. I question if we would have gotten the same treatment if everyone in our group was Male. Advice to the starter- we get it buddy we need to pick up the pace. 1 warning or reminder is enough. You don't have to get in people's faces and shout to get a point across. You'd think spending hundreds of dollars to play would come with a little leniency. It's people like that starter that bring out the worst in golf and make people not wanna try it in the first place. read more

This is my second time on this course and I like the scenery. The course is well spaced out so social distancing is easy to do. They have a convenient food area with plenty of tables to be far from others. Carts are easy to access and organized. Customers here also seem pretty friendly and respectful. I like the course variety and scenery here as you move through the course. read more

I used to really like this course. I noticed that when I came here I was always getting hit into. The more I looked at the layout the less of a fan I was. Most of the front 9 shares fairways with other holes. A few holes have blind tee shots and you are constantly ducking and weaving through other players hitting balls. Good practice facility. Two nice sets of greens to put and chip. The driving range.... meh. Hitting off matts with float golf balls isn't ideal. read more

This is my favorite golf course in Colorado. So why does it only get 2 stars? Well, lemme tell you a little something about Wellshire... In the late 90s and even up to about 5 years ago, this was a fantastic, fantastic muni. It is nice, old, wooded and the people were friendly. Tee times were abundant and the staff was friendly... Around 2005 some major changes started happening in my golf game and Wellshire alike. I was playing more and more and was trying all kinds of new courses. No longer was I limiting myself to Wellshire, Foothills, City Park and other city munis. I was driving north, south, east, west, in search for good deals and better conditions. However, recently, I became nostalgic for my once favorite course. I needed to get back to my routes. I needed to drive my car down Colorado and drive my ball up Hampden. I needed Wellshire. But the Wellshire I once knew had changed. Where there was once punk TJ students working the pro shop and cleaning up the course there was now bitter, old, retired assholes running the operation. They were rude and disrespectful- for no reason whatsoever. And it is also impossible to get a tee time. First off, you need to go through the bullshit Denver Golf website to book a tee time (which are never available) or you need to call the starter the day of (and be ridiculed on the phone). It is a lost cause. It is a damn shame, too. Many of my life's fondest memories come from this 18. read more

I have been trying to pick up golf and my fiancé has been taking me to a few par 3s. On Easter, we thought Wellshire Golf Course would be a perfect time and place to practice my first 18 hole. The first half was great- the starter in the beginning said hello, was cracking jokes, and talked to us about the course layout. However, by the 9th hole when we got back around, there was a new starter. An extremely rude old man came up to us throwing his arms up saying we were behind on our timing (which we were, but I figured there would be at least a little flexibility given the fact we paid around $150 for the trip and it was our first time. Plus it was only by around 10-15 minutes behind schedule). Nobody around us seemed rushed and it was all fun until he decided to yell at us. In fact, there were some points where we were waiting for the people in front of us, which was totally fine, because it's golf and most considerate people don't mind waiting a little bit. That has to be factored into pace of play as well. It was as if he took it personally and made me feel very uncomfortable. If he had any sense of providing a nice experience for customers here, he could have easily given us a friendly reminder of the time, but he chose to act unprofessionally. For the rest of the time, I was just running to my ball, not taking my time to properly hit the ball, and looking behind me hoping there weren't people waiting. By the 14th hole, all of my confidence had gone away and it just wasn't fun anymore, so we left. Unless you are a professional who can perfectly time your trip, I highly suggest you go elsewhere. As long as this nasty old man works here, it will not be a nice environment to try to get better at this sport. read more

1928 Donald Ross course. great old course with mature trees. Wonderful lay out with narrow fairways, small greens and the beauty of an old traditional golf course. Not long but well layed out. A tread to play and a course you can come back to week in and week out. Public course so rates are more than reasonable. I've played a lot of courses in my days living in Denver, but this place is awful. First off they rushed us off the first tee and put us with an old couple that couldn't hit the ball 10 feet. We asked them to play ahead, which they had no problem with and proceeded to keep up a faster pace of play. We were greeted at the 10th tee by a grumpy ol man who would get fired if he was the doorman at Walmart, because this guy obviously didn't wake up on the right side of the bed today. He verbally abused us, and told my playing partner and I to wait for about 10 minutes for the old couple that were slower than shit to catch up to us. The starter then came back over to us and kept on yelling at us, and almost pushed us into a physical altercation. I mean keeping us waiting, slowed down the pace of play, and why come back over to yell at us? We then walked into the pro shop and those guys couldn't care less about giving good customer service, to people who pay good money to play this course. Customer service 101, the customer is always right, and if they're not, you still don't need to stir the pot and invoke more abuse. Do yourself a favor and pick another public, or private course, you will have a way better experience and not get hassled by old men who need to find another line of work. read more

This course is okay. Great location but the condition of the course is just so so. Since this used to be a country club I would have expected better conditions. Green fees are very reasonable. The pro shop is clueless about the daily weather report. I had a noon tee time and based upon rainy weather in the forecast I called to cancel my tee time. The gentleman that I spoke with actually started laughing at my concern about the weather and then admitted he hadn't checked the weather report. Needless to say by my noon tee time there were thunderstorms underway and a tornado warning for that area. How can someone at a golf course not know the daily weather forecast? I've lived on the edge of Wellshire golf course all my life and there has been some ups and downs. Grumpy workers yelling at me, getting the police called on me by the grumpy workers, and scoring an 80 on this descent course. The course itself is gorgeous during sunrise and sunset but the busy street right next to it makes it hard to relax. Another not so great thing is that the pub at the entrance of the course takes forever to make the food and the food isn't even worth the wait. The only reason Wellshire golf course received 3 stars is because you are allowed to drive a golf cart at 16 years old unlike other places I have been to. read more

One of the best parklands-style courses in the city. Just hit it long and straight. Yeah right. This former country club is now a Denver muni, so the amenities are a bit austere, but the golf is pretty good. Long hitters can probably reach all the par-5s, but not without some accuracy. Sometimes you're better off losing it wide into another fairway than losing it a little and having to do something creative to get out of the mature trees. Highlights are no. 10 -- carry the pond and you're putting for eagle -- no. 14 -- 200+ par three with no escape to the right -- and no. 18 -- a short par-5 with an intimidating carry off the tee. Also, please try not to hit any cars on Hampden or Colorado as you close-out your round. Most of all, Wellshire has the most civilized thing in golf. A halfway house. Two opportunities to take a break, get something to drink, maybe a hot dog. Golf as God intended it. There oughtta be a law... read more

We went golfing at Wellshire because it was close to our hotel and a straight shot from the museum. The couple in the golf shop were very friendly and the rates were very good for a Saturday round of 18. The course was almost like swimming lines the first 9 holes so wasn't to much fun. The back 9 was a little more relaxing and better holes. The views were amazing of the Colorado Rockies. read more

Greens and fairways were in very good shape. They have a lot of gear for sale. You get to hit balls into water on the driving range. I didn't see a field marshal but we had no issues with slow play. Ok course for a hack course Had a 345 tee time. No twilight rate. $55 with a cart. Way to expensive for a city course. Very slow. 5+ hours and they yelled at us for not turning the carts in at 815. I have never been so disappointed in a golf course (or staff) in 15 years of Play. He is literally 30% of the reason I won't be coming back to this course (and we play a lot of golf $$$$). I called to ask about a tee time and accidentally pressed 2 for the starter, after a few simple questions about how crowded the course was he said "yeah we're busy" and hung up on me. ( If the call was recorded please listen and comment here if I am being unreasonable, why didn't he just put me through to the pro shop?) This may sound minuscule however I was calling to make a tee time, not just ask. And to have someone as rude as him really does lower the standard of Etiquette and respect that I have grown to love in this game For everyone else: There are too many nice people working at too many nice courses to award this dump with your business, after one visit you will agree. Only one thing keeps this from a five star. I got paired up with three others that were learning golf. Man the group behind us was upset. The rangers were definitely present.lol. they did not harrass us.... They should have. From arrival to departure i,personally, was impressed. Great staff! Fun course. I just wanna say that I'm tired of going to my golf course which I live very close to to have a beer in the pub and there saying there closing early and when it could be a great neighborhood bar. But it seem like the person running the pub doesn't want to make money and stay open. I've golfed there for years but this year I haven't liked the service in the pub. It's not the worst I've played in the Denver area, but not the best either. The staff was fine when I played here. Maybe I lucked out compared to what others have said on here. The course isn't bad. Coming from a low handicap player, it's too short and forgiving to be a real challenging course, but there are a few spots out here where you really have to think your way around.
