For the first time in over a year, I feel hope that I will be feeling awesome again soon. Also, it helps that this place is only 5 minutes from my place of employment! She's smart, funny, easygoing and gets right down to business. Her staff is totally savvy and they carry around netbooks instead of old paper charts. Today I went in with this weird bite -- it had turned into a blister and of course I went on WebMD and freaked myself out. Dr. Nguyen checked it out, let me know that it was infected and gave me two types of antibiotics. In and out within 30 minutes. Gotta love that kind of efficiency.

While I didn't like not being able to interact with anybody other than staff (I mean, it's a hospital setting, so...), they have Roku Tvs with Netflix in the rooms, and you can sign into any of your own services. Jason and Tina in particular are amazing, but I had no negative experiences with anyone working there. I will say, if you're there long enough for a meal, it's going to be a frozen dinner that they throw in a microwave. The upside is you have an exact calorie and carb count, if that matters (I'm on insulin, I have to dose based on carb intake - they let me self administer since I'm on an insulin pump). At one point they apparently would order from restaurants, but that probably cut into the CEOs hush fund too much (joking) Thr care is great. The food is terrible (I mean... It's a frozen dinner). The bill will max out your deductible (and likely your out of pocket even on a HDHP). But they truly do care, and they've stayed in touch to see how I'm doing. After filling out paperwork for 10 minutes he cancelled my appointment because I was late. I guess his time is more important than mine since I've waited more than 15 minutes for him in the past. 2) He cancelled a refill of medication I desperately needed without telling me because a computer database showed that I picked it up. I hadn't. When I suggested that he could have asked me if I had picked it up (and then confirmed it with the pharmacy), he offered no apology. He said it was the pharmacy's fault, not his. He also insisted I call him "doctor" after I addressed him by his first name as if he's above me.

Dr Velasquez was the on-call for my 79-year-young mother's internist late on a Sunday afternoon…read morewhen she was coughing frequently, running a low-grade fever and gradually weakening. We are typically very leery of calling an on-call doctor from a different practice whom we haven't seen before, because the usual outcome is for either the doctor to immediately follow the path of least resistance and send the patient to the ER or to punt it to the regular doctor on his next day in the office. Those types of interactions usually are a waste of time because they aren't helpful and don't explore any options you don't already know. Although she had never seen my mother, Dr Velasquez immediately took interest in my mom's case. She helped me work through my mom's symptoms and determine that it was best we get to the ER immediately rather than prescribe an antibiotic over the phone and wait until the next day when her regular physician would be available. Her interactions with me were simple and easily understood--not filled with medical jargon--and centered on compassion for my mom's situation and that of my family. When we arrived at the hospital, my mother was triaged and placed in a treatment room within 30 minutes. The ER staff had acknowledged that Dr Velasquez had called ahead and alerted the ER to our arrival. Despite a half-full ER waiting room, some of whom had been waiting for three hours to get past triage, we were dealt with swiftly and courteously. I can't help but think that Dr Velasquez's call had something to do with the rapid response we got. But wait, there's more: When I returned from the hospital, about 5 hours from the point I had first spoken with Dr Velasquez, I got a phone call. It was Dr Velasquez, inquiring as to how things had turned out. She even asked if I was pleased with the decision we had made to go to the ER. I couldn't thank her enough for following up with me and for helping to reach the conclusion that we needed to be at the hospital. Of course, based on this one experience with Dr Velasquez, it is not possible for me to comment on her in-office practice or continuing care. But I can say that the way she treats a total stranger calling about another doctor's patient late on a Sunday afternoon is awesome. And, to find a doctor in this day and time that cares this much over the phone about a patient she's never even seen is truly remarkable. ----- P.S. I found out later this morning that my mom's internist who no longer sees patients in the hospital came by to check on her based on call notes that Dr Velasquez had passed along. Follow-through and follow-up. Terrific.

After my referral, they keep forgetting to send my records over to the specialist and the staff at the other doctor ended up requesting the records themselves. This was a year ago and I somehow forgot how awful the staff is and decided to schedule another appointment. They called me to remind me of my appointment and new procedures for covid and when I asked them to send the instructions to my email, they said they can't cause they don't have a map. I'm not even asking for a map, just simple instructions but the receptionist is obviously too lazy to do that. My dentist has no problem sending me detailed emails before each appointment so I don't understand why my doctor's office can't. So I told her to go ahead and cancel the appointment and I'm going to find another primary care provider.

Arise/Westlake kept our $8,000 hostage for 19 months!…read more Billing, billing, billing. Notice that almost all the bad reviews about Arise are about billing. When you go to Arise or Westlake Hospital, please never pay anything up front! They will tell you that they will bill insurance and if you overpaid, you will get a refund. But, that seems to never be true, based on reading the reviews here and based on our experience. (Arise handles billing and insurance for Westlake Hospital, we found out a year after a surgical procedure at Westlake). If insurance ever gets billed, and if you ever get a refund, it will only be after many calls and much work and nagging on your part. And, since you won't receive a bill from Arise/Westlake (because you pre-paid and nothing is owed), you will be in the dark about what the charges are, and you won't even know if insurance was billed or not because you don't know what the charges are! Did we get a refund? Yes, after 19 months of calls, emails, frustration, and visiting the Arise billing office in person, we finally got our overpayment of $8,000+ refunded to us. What went wrong? 1) Arise never even billed our insurance for the wrist surgery. They were not motivated to bill insurance because we had already paid them for the procedure. We finally got them to bill the insurance after a year of calling, and finally visiting the Arise office in person. We were extremely lucky that the insurance paid the bill even though it was filed slightly more than 12 months after the procedure. 2) Arise had to "approve" the billing of insurance for the procedure! What? Why? I don't know. Thankfully, they "approved" it, but I've never even heard of such. Billing insurance for a procedure should be automatic, right?? 3) When I called Westlake about billing the insurance, the person I talked to couldn't actually send a bill to insurance, and couldn't tell us if the bill had been sent. Why? Because she worked for Westlake. And, Arise handles the billing. This problem seemed completely insurmountable. We didn't know that Arise handled the billing. We didn't understand the problem. Finally, we drove to Westlake to talk to someone in person about billing, and we were told that we had to drive over to Arise instead. After talking to folks at Arise, we finally understood why it was useless to call the billing department at Westlake. 4) After Arise finally billed insurance, and our insurance fully paid for the procedure, we were then told "Your money is not refundable". Nobody ever wants to hear that. The person was wrong and they never should have said something like that. It would have been insurance fraud to not refund our money after they received payment for the same procedure twice (once from us; once from insurance). 5) After Westlake/Arise agreed to refund our money, it took almost 60 days to receive a refund check in the mail. This is in violation of the law in Texas which requires the patient be refunded their money within 30 days of recognizing that the patient is due a refund. 6) Fundamentally, there is a BIG BIG problem here. The billing of the insurance should happen automatically, and should not have required any phone calls or in-person visits. And, refunding a customer over-payment should occur automatically. Nothing ever happened without our interference. It is as though I was their unpaid employee working for countless hours on my own behalf. Without my intervention and numerous hours spent they would have done nothing at all. I can't possibly write about all the aggravation, frustration, and time spent on this problem. If we had taken no action, we would never see our $8,000 refunded for sure.

For example, they helped us determine existence of a blood clot toward the end of their business day and patiently made sure we had a treatment plan before leaving, and contacted our other doctor with an update after business hours.

I first entered St Davids Medical Center Down Town Austin Texas on about 6/11/2026 to ER at about…read more3:00 AM Was admitted to 4 East. I was found to have 2 lumbar Compression fxs. by cat-scan. The Hospitalist that first saw me on 4 east was extremely rude in her manner. I can take rude but she failed to referr me to an orthopedic doctor for my acute fractures. She failed to order a TLSO brace to prevent the progression of the compression fractures. Some doctor who I never met decided I needed Kyphoplasty surgery. However I was told I had to have a MRI to have the surgery. I am 325 lbs and too big for their MRI so I was denied surgery. I ask for a reasonable accomidation to have the MRI done at a outpatient facility that has a wide bore MRI Scanner. This request was denied by some supervisory woman who did not introduce herself. I was denied this ADA accommodation and I ask for discharge which was done without any followup help finding an MRI I could fit in. I purchased my own TLSO as I am a retired Physical Therapist hainge practiced at this hospital for about 12 years. t
