Over the weekend the owners go to Chinatown and pick up dim sum, fresh Asian vegetables, that you won't find in the local supermarket. I was looking at the prices for the dim sum, it seemed expensive. But, then I looked online for some of the places we used to go in Chinatown, New York, oriental grocers charged a little less than a lot of the places we used to patronize. When you consider they're doing all the work it's really a bargain! It was one thing when we would take the D train down to Grand Street and walk a couple blocks and load up; now it's major operation. I'm so glad they are still around. It's open today, when we can pick up our dim sum. They go to Chinatown in the city. Pick up dim sum and sell it at their store. They have Peking duck. Shrimp rolls( my favorite). Shumai, and other items. I get my seaweed salad here, and going shopping to pick up other items. You can also order ahead. Give them your order and pick up , they will hold those items for you. We get there at opening, so we are able to find wha, unfortunately if you arrive late you might not find any dim sum. They do have items. read more

I've been going here for many years, perhaps twenty at a minimum, not many times a year but perhaps once every month or two. Everything other reviewers state about the owners is true-- they are kind, willing to help, etc. The range of items has grown and improved over the years and the prices are fine. Yet, two of the last three visits have been thwarted by finding signs on the door saying that they are closed and will return hours later. For anyone coming from a distance, this can be quite frustrating. The opening hours are limited as it is without this kind of random closure. Yes, the weekend visit can turn into quite a scrum, so do not plan on going there for a simple item or two, the checkout line will be all the way to the back of the store. read more

As stated earlier you might think the sign to this store leads you to a smoke shop but just look for where the shopping carts are and go in through that door to the immediate right of the smoke shop and you will find a cozy store that looks a little shabby but has some fantastic buys. I happened to be driving through the town and just looked over at the strip mall and saw the big Oriental market sign and absolutely checked it out for nothing but pure curiosity. They have a whole lot of ingredients that you're not going to find at big box stores like h Mart or the supermarket in Middletown. Lots of rice seasonings, pickles and sauces. There are also some fresh ingredients like baby bok choy but the star of the show where the Frozen authentic Chinese soup dumplings and steamed buns. Probably saw my favorites I've ever had even more so than the ones I get at the Korean grocery store. There's an elderly gentleman who helps you out with everything if you have any questions and he's very happy to do so. Looking forward to going back there again. read more

As much as I like this store it has started to really annoy me, but, only because I have such an issue with lateness. I have come here often. But what I keep forgetting to learn is that even though it says 1030 open on the door I have waited sometimes past 11 am for them to open. Drives me nuts. If there was another store up here that carried such a great selection of Asian products I'd be out if here already. But for now I am sitting here in my car along with another ten customers waiting for them to open!!!! I think I will have to try and remember don't get here before 12. I'd been looking for an Asian supermarket for a while somewhere in the Hudson Valley and this one in particular happened to pop up in my Google search. Since my family and I were going to hit up Poughkeepsie for another store, we figure we'd check this one out as well. The store itself is not large, but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in the sheer amount of products offered on the shelves and in the fridges. They have a wide range of Asian foods and snacks (Japanese, Korean, etc.) and the woman who worked at the front counter was incredibly helpful and nice. When I inquired as to whether they had chrysanthemum flower tea, the woman told me they were out but took down my name and phone number and said she would give me a call once they got that back in stock. While the store is kind of messy and cluttered (lots of boxes near the entrance and on the floor) I didn't mind since I'm not there for the aesthetics, just the food. My mom found a number of ingredients she'd been looking for and at better prices than what you'd typically get from a regular supermarket like Hannafords or ShopRite. I picked out two packages of flavored mochi as well as some Thai Iced Tea packets and other goodies, all of which I'm very happy with. Overall, if you're looking for a store that has a great selection of Asian foods/cooking supplies/snacks, this place is definitely a gem! read more

The place is small, but it is definitely a hidden gem in this neck of the woods. There were items I thought I could never buy in this area without traveling over an hour. Great selection of Asian sauces, condiments, good selection of ramen and everything to make bubble tea. The frozen section was lacking (would've loved to see frozen dumplings, wontons, or any other dim sum items) and the fresh produce was also lacking (although I did get a very fresh bunch of scallion). Since there is no Asian supermarket around, I come here for any sort of Asian product that you might find in a supermarket down in the city! They have sauces & spices from various Asian countries; Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean etc. They have a limited amount of fresh groceries & varies depending on the week. I've seen ginger, bitter melon, eggplants and others! They also have a small frozen & refrigerated section where you can get the infamous brown sugar boba ice cream, noodles, kimchi and tofu. This is a well-stocked, family owned Chinese market. They also carry Malaysian and filipino supplies. The owners are always very friendly, helpful, kind, and engaging. I highly recommend this business. However, if I had one wish about this place, I do wish they would give the place a good cleaning, and empty out the trash and clutter that covers literally every flat surface in the place, including the floor. This is a shop I have happily used for tools and ingredients not found easily in this area. Today I was happy to find stacked bamboo steamer baskets in various sizes- I settled on 8" to prepare healthy steamed vegs assortments. I was also able to restock my "Redboat Fish Sauce" in a large size! I called ahead, and the owner was pleasant and helpful- as always in my experience. The name is appropriate; I felt welcome the moment I walked in, and I was instantly asked if I needed help looking for anything. They had quite the variety of many of the less common ingredients for which I was searching. I came here today after lunch, so I'm not sure if they had produce earlier in the day, there wasn't much when I arrived. I was pleased with the variety of teas, oils, sauces, spices, dry ingredients, etc.. One thing that amused me was lemongrass stalks. The last time I had gone to nearby Golden Mango, I couldn't find any. When I asked one of the employees stocking the shelves, it turned out he didn't even know what lemongrass was. He eventually had to ask someone else if they carried it. Here it was abundant, and only FORTY TWO CENTS for a large stalk (compare that to Hannaford, who - when they have it in stock - sell two much smaller stalks for $1.99). It's unfortunate that I still don't have one place locally where I can do one-stop shopping when I want Asian foods (fresh, frozen, packaged, etc.), but Welcome Grocery now fills a large part of those requirements. read more

Baby bok choy and other veggies, miso paste, a large variety of frozen dumplings and dry pasta, tons of other asian foods that I don't recognize, and a menagerie of other interesting wares. Despite the fact that there are only two short aisles in this small store, I've browsed for a good 25 minutes before and will again. This is the only place to go for most asian cooking ingredients that I know of north of NYC (though Adam's puts forth a laudable effort). Worth a visit if nearby! Oh, and most packages have English instructions on them, though you might have to search a bit. Downsides: the place isn't the most pristine, and it's a bit disorganized. read more

I rely on this shop for my quarterly Asian supply shopping- Fish sauces, nori, rice noodles in shapes that the supermarket does not have. And I purchased my rice cooker here s few years ago. If you are serious about steamed rice, you can't rely on the america rice cookers. Soup spoons, disposable chop sticks in blocks dozens of pairs. Bubble tea mixes, and Asian sweets- all found here. I want to give this shop four stars because of the hard-to-find Asian staples, however the shop will need to improve "holding" temperatures and procedures for perishables. Currently, several reach-in fridges are serving as storage for empty boxes. The owners are very nice, but you really need to do your own homework on what products your recipe calls for. Certain times of the day, there is a line/ u for freshly related rice cakes and other savory items- all lined up on a countertop. I want to try them, but will wait for them to install heating trays. Stick to the pantry basics. Stick to the pantry items for now. read more

This store is absolutely amazing in every way! There is Japanese, Chinese, and Korean snacks and foods, I got spicy ramen and mochi for low prices, I got an 8 pack of mochi for 4 bucks! The lady that works there was very nice and answered all my questions about the food in there, there's boba and bubble tea and the marble drinks and traditional food, there's even those mushrooms that are stringy! Every Saturday they brought in "rare" items like roast chicken/duck, bbq pork, dim sums, banh mi and some asian vegetables. I LOVE this place!!! I'm SO happy I found it because Poughkeepsie really lacks in a true Asian super market, even if it is a mini market. They have a good variety of Asian cooking ingredients, whenever I want to make some Gyudon or Pho I usually get my ingredients here. They also have a good variety of Asian snacks, drinks, and ramen which I am grateful for. I had a wonderful experience here! I was immediately asked if I needed help finding anything when I walked in and the owner was super helpful when checking out. As far a stock, it seemed really well stocked to me with a large array of sauces and dry ingredients. There wasn't a lot of produce, which I was looking forward to but that's okay, it made up in the dry ingredients. I mostly went since I'm vegan and was looking for vegan options. And I found what I was looking for and more! There was vegan stock cubes and seasonings as well as agar agar which I have been looking for everywhere. As well as 2 types of canned seitan, tofu and dried bean curd options. The owner figured I was vegan from my selection and was kind enough to let me know that they also have a fresh vegetarian "chicken" stock on the weekends. This tiny store doesn't want your business. Never opens on schedule, and most items are OVERPRICED. In fact, they charge at least 30% more than most asian supermarkets in Flushing or Queens, NY. Make sure you check the expiration date of the food you purchase, because on many occasions they have food expired more than 1 year ago on sale. The owner and his son looks unhappy and especially his oldest son, very rude to customers. They never gives you a receipt, unless you ask them repeatly. I try my best to avoid this tiny store, and would rather drive 80 miles to Queens and shop in chinese supermarkets that are at least 50 times bigger, for some fresh quality grocery which are priced more reasonable. After counting tolls, gas and time spent, it's still more economical to go to those big supermarket in Queens. read more

The directions to this place are rather misleading... the store is actually ON Route 376 in a strip mall across from a gas station. The store is fairly small, but they have a decent (although, yes, small) selection of vegetables, sauces, snacks, frozen goods, drinks, pastries, food stuff and house things. I don't understand the review saying that the staff are unfriendly and the prices far too high; I was greeted warmly, shown what I inquired for, and found prices a bit higher than in NYC but quite in line for out in the country. They have brands I am familiar with from NYC Chinatowns, and it seems that they carry as wide a variety as much larger stores. They carry only a few fresh vegetables, very basic, otherwise I would give them 5 stars. It's an hour's drive from my home, but I will be back; enough said. read more
