I met Dr. David Chang a couple years ago through a mutual basketball game. I got a positive feeling…read moreabout him right off the bat because he shared my pass-first, everyone should have a chance to contribute approach to the game. Anyway, this past April 25, I was playing ball and running down the court, when suddenly felt an intense pain in my right knee out of nowhere -- no pop, no impact, no twist. i had to it shut down immediately. For 6 weeks, I couldn't jump or run. Given that I generally work out 5-6 days a week, this was not fun. I was doing everything I could to rehab on my own without success. The problem was in my diagnosis. In addition, my orthopedic chiropractor (who is amazing) also was stumped. Enter Dr. Chang. I went to his Telegraph Avenue office last Thursday morning. He examined my knee and the surrounding leg parts to assess the situation. He also asked me for my perspective/description of what happened and how it felt and asked me to explain how I had been treating it. This is where his teamwork approach was demonstrated. It's important for a patient to feel heard and perhaps even contribute to the solution. After putting all the data together, Dr. Chang concluded that my IT band was abnormally tight/stressed and was creating a domino effect in other parts of my leg -- and ultimately causing my knee cap/patella tendon to be tight and and off track, thus, creating some kind of havoc. Dr. Chang showed me some exercises and videos and I did some further research myself. I don't know whether the explanation is magical or scientific (or both), but after puttiing in a couple hours of rehab the next two days, I was playing full court basketball by Saturday morning. I will continue to do the work and see how things play out. I really appreciate Dr. Chang and would recommend that anyone with orthopedic issues, get his valuable opinion.

Before the visit: I broke my ankle and scheduled an appointment with him earlier this year. Not only did he not respond to me asking for confirmation of the appointment, but he tried to cancel my appointment 10 minutes before the scheduled time. He wasn't even apologetic about it. During the visit: This was my first time breaking any of my bones so I was unsure about everything. THANKFULLY I avoided the pressure he was giving me to have a surgery and asked to think about it. Looking back, it was quite upsetting that he never gave me all the important information about getting surgery (healing time, the cons of having foreign materials put into your body, etc.). After the visit: I also asked to call Chang after the appointment with a few more questions about surgery (the whole call took around 5 minutes or less). He ended up charging me for that call, initially labelling it as a regular appointment and changing it to a "telemedicine appointment" after I told them what the call was about. Really??? Not only was I not informed that I would be getting charged for this call (he didn't say it would be considered a "telemedicine appointment") BUT the call only lasted for 5 minutes with no diagnosis or x-ray--just me asking simple questions!!! Because of all the vague answers and overall negative experience, I decided to consult other doctors I trusted afterwards and they all said the opposite of Chang: that I SHOULDN'T EVEN CONSIDER surgery at all. It's been months since then and my ankle has healed perfectly (I went to another doctor closer to home who was way nicer, straightforward, and encouraging).

I had a sleep study conducted February 2019 and received my results when?....... DRUM ROLL...... THIS MORNING. I have been calling this office for months, it has been more than a year since my study was conducted. 1 year and 7 months to be exact. I needed these results to clear me for a surgical procedure that I need and it took them 1 year and 7 months to give me the results!?!!?? How is that possible!?!? This is beyond unprofessional. Everytime I called the Sutter Health number and got in touch with someone, they told me that they didn't see my test result information on their system. This was beyond frustrating as I needed this test for a procedure that I have to do. So because of this, the date of my procedure was put off.... 1 year and 7 months later!!!!! This morning I called (ONCE AGAIN!!!) and spoke to a lady who told me that she would search for my name. About 10-15 minutes later she calls me back and said that she found me in the system and that she would be in touch with my surgeons office to fax over the results. She also emailed the results to me. This all happened in a span of 30 minutes or less. I believe the lady's name is Luyen. So thank you Luyen, for doing something in 30 minutes that the rest of your colleagues could not do in the last 1 year and 7 months. Which was sending my results to my surgeons office for clearance. Seeing that it took her just under 30 minutes to figure this out and I had been calling for SOOO SOOO LONG, I just HAD to leave this result. On another note: it is almost impossible to get an appointment in a specific timeframe. His office is busy and overbooked (as you can see from some of the other reviews.) I had to wait more than 3 months for my appointment with him and then another year and 7 months for the results.

I was admitted with a kidney stone that left me literally kneeling by the hospital bed in agony when he first came in to see me. From the moment he walked in, his kind and calm demeanor made a huge difference. He didn't just rush through -- he took the time to explain what was happening, what my options were, and how we could relieve the pain and get me on the path to healing. He treated me like a person, not just a patient in crisis. His expertise was clear, but what stood out most was his compassion. He reassured me in a moment when I felt completely overwhelmed, and he guided me through the procedure with such steady confidence that I felt safe placing my trust in him. Thanks to his care, I am able to move from a place of unbearable pain to healing and stability. I'm deeply grateful to Dr. Barme and would highly recommend him to anyone facing urological issues -- not only for his medical skill, but for the humanity he brings into the room.

While my appointment went well, the standard insurance paper work for a cortisone shot (the most common intervention other than pain meds) was rejected, and no one from the office followed up. There were no follow up notes after my appointment for next steps. My primary seemed very surprised that this routine procedure was denied which makes me suspect that they didn't do the minimal paperwork required. When you call 'the office', you reach someone at the main switchboard who presumably passes on a message which may or may not be returned. In my case, it was not even though I requested that they resubmit the paperwork. Keep in mind that many many people reaching out to a pain management doctor are in excruciating, debilitating pain. When I finally went in, I was barely able to walk and had to lie down during the appointment due to the extreme pain. Currently, I'm repeatedly leaving messages at the switchboard attempting to try to get my cortisone shot months after all medical staff I met with agreed that it was necessary. If you are in an acute, debilitating situation with your pain, I'd recommend you seek someone who runs a more responsive office.

I wrote a review about Dr. Kuluva a couple of years ago that didn't get posted for some reason. At…read morethe time, Yelp said they were going to review it, but then never posted it. Since it never got posted, here goes another try. The reason I'm posting this is that I'd like to 2nd Kristin K's experience with Dr. Kuluva. While my experience was not as awful as her's, I also found him to be pretty dismissive. At the time that I was his patient, I was a graduate student in NYC, and was referred to him via the campus counselling center. At that point in my life, I was dealing with a good deal of depression for a variety of reasons. However, he was often dismissive of the things that I would bring up with him - so much so that I found myself censoring myself during our appointments. In fact, I often left my appointments with him feeling worse than when I came in because he made me feel stupid and whiny. Not exactly a great recipe for building trust with someone. Being an adult child of an alcoholic parent who was also often dismissive of me, this really was an especially lousy way to work with me. After several months, I finally got fed up with seeing him, and quit making appointments. If you give him the benefit of the doubt, I believe he was a doing his residency at NYU Medical Center during the time when I was his patient; and for that reason, my understanding was that he was often dealing with patients with far greater psychological issues than run-of-the-mill depression like mine. As a result, I could see how my issues at the time would pale in comparison. Still, I think it's poor practice to make any of your patients feel worse than when they came in, regardless of how severe their issues are. For those who have had success working with him, all the power to you and God bless. My experience with him, however, was lousy and I could never recommend him to anyone.
