I met Dr. David Chang a couple years ago through a mutual basketball game. I got a positive feeling about him right off the bat because he shared my pass-first, everyone should have a chance to contribute approach to the game. Anyway, this past April 25, I was playing ball and running down the court, when suddenly felt an intense pain in my right knee out of nowhere -- no pop, no impact, no twist. i had to it shut down immediately. For 6 weeks, I couldn't jump or run. Given that I generally work out 5-6 days a week, this was not fun. I was doing everything I could to rehab on my own without success. The problem was in my diagnosis. In addition, my orthopedic chiropractor (who is amazing) also was stumped. Enter Dr. Chang. I went to his Telegraph Avenue office last Thursday morning. He examined my knee and the surrounding leg parts to assess the situation. He also asked me for my perspective/description of what happened and how it felt and asked me to explain how I had been treating it. This is where his teamwork approach was demonstrated. It's important for a patient to feel heard and perhaps even contribute to the solution. After putting all the data together, Dr. Chang concluded that my IT band was abnormally tight/stressed and was creating a domino effect in other parts of my leg -- and ultimately causing my knee cap/patella tendon to be tight and and off track, thus, creating some kind of havoc. Dr. Chang showed me some exercises and videos and I did some further research myself. I don't know whether the explanation is magical or scientific (or both), but after puttiing in a couple hours of rehab the next two days, I was playing full court basketball by Saturday morning. I will continue to do the work and see how things play out. I really appreciate Dr. Chang and would recommend that anyone with orthopedic issues, get his valuable opinion. read more

My experience with Chang was VERY NEGATIVE. He is unprofessional, unkind, and money sucking. I really hope I don't ever encounter another doctor like him. Before the visit: I broke my ankle and scheduled an appointment with him earlier this year. Not only did he not respond to me asking for confirmation of the appointment, but he tried to cancel my appointment 10 minutes before the scheduled time. He wasn't even apologetic about it. During the visit: This was my first time breaking any of my bones so I was unsure about everything. THANKFULLY I avoided the pressure he was giving me to have a surgery and asked to think about it. Looking back, it was quite upsetting that he never gave me all the important information about getting surgery (healing time, the cons of having foreign materials put into your body, etc.). After the visit: I also asked to call Chang after the appointment with a few more questions about surgery (the whole call took around 5 minutes or less). He ended up charging me for that call, initially labelling it as a regular appointment and changing it to a "telemedicine appointment" after I told them what the call was about. Really??? Not only was I not informed that I would be getting charged for this call (he didn't say it would be considered a "telemedicine appointment") BUT the call only lasted for 5 minutes with no diagnosis or x-ray--just me asking simple questions!!! Because of all the vague answers and overall negative experience, I decided to consult other doctors I trusted afterwards and they all said the opposite of Chang: that I SHOULDN'T EVEN CONSIDER surgery at all. It's been months since then and my ankle has healed perfectly (I went to another doctor closer to home who was way nicer, straightforward, and encouraging). read more

I could not be more pleased with Dr. Chang for help with an elusive pain in my leg. He's not only a great diagnostician, but incredibly attentive, caring, and helpful in designing a set of exercises to help with the problem. Should you need an orthopedist, you cannot go wrong with David Chang. read more

Dr Chang has been my orthopedic specialist ever since I moved to the Bay Area from Los Angeles. I had shoulder surgery just before I moved and needed a new surgeon to oversee my progress as I went through rehab and hit stumbles along the way. Dr Chang is hands down the best surgeon I have had any experience with. He is caring, he takes his time with patients, answers all of your questions, and he knows what he is talking about. He is fairly active himself and so can speak from his own experience which makes you feel more confident in his diagnoses. But most important of all, he is a good doctor because he cares about the outcome of his patients, not seeing as many patients as he can to make more money. This is evident the moment you speak with him. His staff which really consists of one person, Joanne, is also amazing. She is pleasant, caring, accommodating, and makes the in-office experience very comfortable. I feel great knowing I am in the care of such great professionals and highly recommend anyone seeking an orthopedic surgeon to visit Dr Chang. read more

I wish there was an option for zero stars. I was under Dr. Chang's care for about 5 months on this day. This review points out the lack of care and responsibility that Dr. Chang and his staff had for me. I went to Dr. Chang after breaking a bone in a bike accident. He saw me immediately after my accident, and I agreed to have surgery to correct the bone's displacement and have it stabilized. So far so good. Surgery was successful, and I was told I should heal within 2-3 months. Moving forward three months, a pain started my to occur in my fixed arm. Upon seeing an x-ray, it appears that the titanium plate in my arm has snapped and my bone was still broken. Dr. Chang was very confused. He gave me no explanation on how this happened, and I felt that he did not know how to handle this situation. He immediately told me that I had to go see a someone else. He decided to put me in a cast and discharged me. I told him once Covered California processes my new insurance coverage, I would like to see the referral right away since my arm is still not healed. A few weeks later, I contacted his front office staff to inquire about on when I can see the specialist that the doctor referred me to. A staff member by the name of Joanne tells me she will send the paperwork over right away. A week later, I heard nothing back, so I asked again. She told me she has not sent it over. Without much help here, I got the name of Specialist and tried to make an appointment myself. I was told I had to be referred. I am a bit frustrated now. My arm has been broken for almost 5 months, and I really need to have my condition looked at. A week later, I contacted Dr. Chang's office again, for the third time, to find out if they have sent my file over and I did not receive a response. I am getting the feeling that they no longer care and has left me in the cold. I am left to figure my condition out on my own. My recommendation: STAY AWAY! read more

It has taken me awhile to process my recent visit (August 2018) with this provider. After two years as a patient here, I have found him to be very dismissive, resulting in a waste of my time and $$, only to get no useful answers to the issues with my back, all the while having a continuously painful and unstable walking gait. PT had been ordered *two years ago* -way before 2 MRI's- 2016 & 2018, showed degenerative disc disease and Foraminal Stenosis. The PT I received was prescribed with the a focus on hip pain vs the ultimate diagnosis, that at the time, had yet to be diagnosed. Listening to the patient is clearly not a priority here, in my experience. The final insult: being foisted on (after being told, "nothing else I can do for you, you've already had PT") the possibility of another such provider, as read in the reviews for the Dr. I have now been referred to. Last but not least, this office appears to be a reflection of the individual seated at the front desk, (Oakland office) who is incredibly unprofessional and rude in her interactions with patients. How hard is it to be polite? I highly do not recommend this provider. read more

I had an overwhelmingly positive experience with Dr. Chang. He's open and friendly, explains everything thoroughly, and follows up with great care. I had a torn ACL and meniscus. He recommended a meniscectomy but no surgery for the ACL-- outcomes are good with physical therapy. I appreciated the pragmatism and the fact that he's aware of current research in his field. But what really impressed me was the thoroughness of the follow-up care I received. He made time to check in and communicate frequently, despite the fact that my recovery was happening over his Christmas vacation. Amazing surgeon and genuinely kind person; I would recommend him to anyone. read more

I went to Dr. Chang for a second opinion on whether any additional treatment was needed for a terrible, slow-healing high ankle sprain. Dr. Chang confirmed that the conservative treatment I was already receiving elsewhere was correct, but gave me a more thorough explanation of my injury than I had gotten from my other provider. He spent a lot of time sitting down with me to explain exactly what had happened in my case, using models and going in detail through the previously done MRI images and report that I brought with me. He explained that a high ankle sprain needed a much longer healing time than a regular one, and explained the mechanics of why. I left with my mind far more at ease. This is a doctor who really has the bedside manner down--taking time, explaining, listening, even cracking jokes to cheer you up. Great experience! read more

If I could give this doctor and his staff zero stars I would. I first saw Dr. Chang in April 2018 for elbow pain that had started in late February. He, without hesitation, told me I had tennis elbow and he referred me to physical therapy. I asked if I should get a MRI and he said no it's just tennis elbow. After 3 PT sessions the pain worsened and I started getting a new pain in my forearm and shoulder. I went back to him and he didn't exam or even touch my elbow and he referred me to another doctor to conduct a nerve test. I was crying telling him I had not slept more than a few hours a night in weeks - he didn't care. I asked again about a MRI and he said insurance doesn't like to pay for those. I asked for an injection to my elbow to help with pain and he said no. On top of this the doctor he referred me to get a nerve test would not see me without a MRI. So, I found another doctor on my own and got the nerve test. Like an idiot I went back to Dr. Chang only for him to tell me again it's just tennis elbow. That was it - I went to my PCP, got an MRI and then saw a new orthopedic in SF and guess what ... I have been walking around with a FULL TENDON TEAR (full means completely torn). Basically my forearm has not been connected to my elbow this whole time. Now that I have a competent ortho I'm getting an injection in my elbow this week to help relieve the pain until I get surgery in a few weeks. I could write a whole other review on his immature staff but it's not worth it. read more

I visited Dr Chang's office for the first time on Jan 12th and I thought he was really pleasant and quite knowledgeable. The one downside was having to interactive with the two catty women with the nasty attitudes at the front desk. Initially I was very confused as why they were so full of attitude until I read the negative Yelp reviews. They are nasty to everyone! Maybe they think it is cute but I for one will never ever visit this office again. Initially I felt empathy for Dr Chang and wondered if he knows how many customers they run away until he chose to ignore my request to speak directly to him regarding the situation. I am now certain that he is fully aware and still supports them ... so he gets what he deserves! I suspect one or both may be related to him. read more

Dr. Chang is a doctor of the old. He is a human being first and a doctor second -- mind you he is a awesome doctor. On multiple occasions he took a lot of time to educate me on my knee and the recovery process. In surgery, I awake and conscious and again he explained everything to me. You are not only a patient in good company, but he treats you like a guest in his home. I enthusiastically recommend Dr. Chang as a skilled and efficient doctor. You won't be happier anywhere else. read more

Dr Chang is great - really helped me with my knee - took the time - very smart and tuned in - highly recommend him

Skilled, Caring and Best Surgeon whom you can communicate by Email ! After a MRI showed that I had a torn shoulder, I was referred to Dr. David S. Chang, an orthopedic Surgeon at Bay Area Sports Orthopedics. He turned out to be a skilled arthroscopic surgeon. Dr. David Chang used only ONE stitch to repair my torn muscle which likened to an art work (when viewed from the arthroscopic pictures) and I cannot find any scars around my shoulder. I am now pain free with great range of motion and really happy with my recovery from a year long shoulder problem. I like to recommend Dr. Chang for not only his expertise but also his impressive caring manner. Dr. David Chang, although a surgeon, was very conservative in using surgery to solve my problem. He initially sent me to physical therapy for rehabilitation to see whether surgery could be avoided. When my condition did not improve with physical therapy, he explained the alternatives in the most patient and considerate manner. Later I learned from other medical professionals that they held Dr. Chang at great esteem, regarding him as one of the best surgeons, and admiring him to be a most caring doctor. I observed the way he interacts with other patients in his office, and I must say I agree! His office takes all insurances and is located at 5700 Telegraph Ave, Suite 100,Oakland CA 94609, Phone: 510-834-2276. read more

Dr. Chang is great. He performed surgery on my wrist fracture and from start to finish through recovery he was helpful every step of the way. Very tech savvy, efficient, friendly and caring. I would highly recommend BASO and Dr. Chang. read more

I had broken my collarbone in a vehicle accident and needed medical help with the recovery. From the outset, Dr. Chang laid out the choices in detail and what timeline each choice typically costs. My recovery (without surgery) was taking a bit longer than usual but could be shortened with the help of a 'bone growth stimulator. It turned out that this device is a bit costly and my insurance company needed a statement from Dr Chang that my case warranted use of the device. I'm happy that I was able to obtain the device as Dr Chang had made a solid case for it. I should also mention Dr Chang's front desk coordinator Joanne. Joanne made sure that all coordination with other service providers went smoothly. Joanne and the Dr. make a great team. I'm happy that they played on my behalf. read more

I can't understand any negative reviews for this office. Both Dr. Chang, and his assistant Joanne have been very timely, and prompt with information. Dr. Chang takes his time explaining things. I have had MRI's in the past, however, he is the only physician who really showed me graphically what was going on with my discs. I highly recommend this office to anyone looking for a good orthopedist. read more

I did a good job of breaking my right ankle in December. A couple of friends who had been treated by Dr. Chang told me that he was the guy to see, and I was able to get in to see him on the Monday following the accident. He laid out the options for both surgical and non-surgical treatment, and when I requested surgery he juggled his schedule to get me treated promptly. He provided first rate care. Things proceeded as he predicted. My ankle has healed well, and I'm back to pre-injury activities, and could not be more pleased. I recommend Dr. Chang without hesitation. read more

My brother went in to see Dr. Chang today regarding a bone separation shoulder injury and he described such a wonderful experience. Dr. Chang went into great detail to explain to my brother what had happened to him internally and the steps he needed to take moving forward. "I've never had a doctor show me my x-rays and bring in a model of a human skeleton to show me what type of damage occurred, what happened to my bones, ligaments, & joints, and go into such detail about my injury." We're very thankful to have such a caring doctor and would recommend everyone to go see him (especially regarding a shoulder injury). read more

The doctor seems amazing and I was really happy to find him, but since my first appointment I have not been able to get in touch with the office! I've called 4 times and emailed, and no response. The admin was supposed to follow up with me regarding a denied MRI request, but never did. In the meantime my injury is getting worse and I'm in pain. I'm going to have to switch doctors when I'd rather not, but it's been impossible to reach anyone in the office. My health insurance had the same problem -- they called to discuss the MRI approval and could not get in touch with Dr. Chang or his office. I really liked him and it's unfortunate that I can't see him. read more

Dr. Chang is easily one of the most personable doctors that I have ever interacted with. He is knowledgable, thoughtful and his demeanor makes him very easy to relate to. He is an excellent role model, not only as a professional but also as a person in general. I have seen a number of reviews disparaging the office staff... The writers of those reviews must be talking about some other office because I have yet to have a bad experience at BASO. The staff are friendly, easy to work with and pleasant to talk to. Joanne is super sweet and I can't imagine her not doing her utmost to make patients feel comfortable and welcome. Really awesome practice, doubly recommend if you are a serious athlete, wouldn't go anywhere else. read more

I haven't met the doctor yet but I wanna ask the doctor that how he hired the front desk people. They all are rude and have bad attitude. Her name is Julian ( not sure if i spell right) and the other one I didn't ask her name. Both of them very mean! They are not suitable working at the doctor office and dealing with people. They should get a job at the meat market!! read more

I cannot speak more highly of Dr David Chang, who surgically repaired my broken ankle. He is the consummate professional in every respect, and post surgery I am good as new! read more

We haven't see the Dr. yet. I have to say that the front dest lady who's name Joanne is terrible on helping patient on checking insurance. Instead she really emphasized its patient's responsibility to know their insurance. And she would not bother to help you to check for sure. As a health care provider staff, I think she totally doesn't know what is patient center care, and does not know how to ease a patient's pain frustration when they are suffering pain and diseases. Sorry Dr. Chang, you had lost your business because of your staffs. read more

Odd my experience with dr. Chang was not even close to the few reviews I've read. My knee is busted, bone on bone. dr. Chang suggested a clean out. He did it on the cheap said I would be awake for the procedure, twilight, in and out in the same day. Already had surgery on my knee twice before. When I asked about a knee replacement I was told "you're too young." Of course when I got to the outpatient facility bells and whistles went off, it was like a clinic in an alley on a side street. My knee had been killing me I had to get this done. Well after I awoke from the general anesthesia I was informed that the twilight was not administered because the area was too sensitive. I've never had anesthesia and not been in the hospital at least 24 hours. Well dr. Chang had such a wonderful beside manner he sent me home. There is a valid reason to keep you in overnight the patient could have a bad reaction to the anesthesia, which is what happened to me. I had a follow up visit with dr. Chang where he gave me 3 sessions of PT 30min. It took me 45 to get to the facility. After completed cycle of PT. dr. Chang suggested something called visco supplementation. it was approved by my insurance carrier but I was given the run around by dr. changs office and was never given the treatment. I don't know what it is or was but that was the WORST experience I've had. read more

Dr. Chang is a great doctor, through and knowledgeable, tuned in with the latest developments. Would recommend him to others for sure. However, the front desk staff is not very friendly, rather I will say is rude and is not accommodating to the patients needs and pains, which negates the overall experience with Dr. Chang. read more

The front office woman is absolutely terrible. Like makes the experience so painful every single time you have to deal with her that she undoes whatever good Dr. Chang has to offer. She is impossible to work with, shares uncomfortably personal stories about her experiences with the doctors and with patients, is slow to contact you (if she ever does at all) when you need to hear back from the office, and is seriously invested in not doing any work for you. I don't mean "going the extra mile" kind of work, I mean calling you back, making an appointment, etc. I realize she is probably overworked and exhausted, but at some point you have to expect her to just do her basic job. I am quietly changing orthopedists after seeing Dr. Chang because she makes the experience each time absolutely awful. I have no plans on telling her that or asking her to transfer my records anywhere because I know it either won't get done, or will be a totally painful experience on my end if it does. I hope I never have to deal with that office ever again, despite how great Dr. Chang is. read more
