I noticed recently my cousin worker not wearing his glasses and assumed they broke or getting a new prescription. When J finally had a chance to ask him, he told me he got Lasik. The experience of getting LASIK was initially very concerning for me since I was taking a chance on my vision. However, after building up the courage and speaking to people I know who had already undergone the procedure, I felt much more confident about going through with it. Got my PRK done here by Dr. Newman last year. I guess I should write a review after no eye glasses for a whole year. The consultation was simple and easy. The procedure was fast but recovery was little painful for about 2-3 days. Dr. Newman said that is normal for PRK. I love my 20/20 eyes now. Review#750 Alllllllllriiiiiiiiiiiiichyaaalllllll, here is the review of all reviews! I (FINALLY) underwent the LASIK eye surgery on, Tuesday, September 5, 2017 at approximately 11:45am. From prep, start to finish I would have to say I was in and done within 15-20 minutes. For someone like me, who has very low pain tolerance, I kept asking for more numbing eye drops and stalled a few minutes for my Valium to kick in. Once that kicked in and I felt nothing in my eyes, Dr. Newman performed magic to the sockets of my soul. Right before starting he asked if I could see the time on his gray clock hanging on the wall, "ummm, excuse me what clock in the wall?" (LOL!) Once the surgery was done, I was able to say 12:04 ;D (holy cow!). I would have to say the most uncomfortable part, post surgery was the first 2 hours. Once the numbing drops subsided, I was in Onion Peel H-E-Double Hockey Sticks! My eyes had major difficulty opening, as if they were trying to stay closed on their on, because it felt like someone was rubbing a fresh cut onion on my eye balls. The hot burning sensation caused me to produce A LOT of tears, which was listed as one of the things that would happen after surgery. After applying the required medication eye drops I popped 2 Tylenol PM for pain and took a shot of Zzzquil and passed out for 4 hours. After waking up from my nap, that warm onion burning sensation was gone, whewwww! Your eyes will feel slightly slimy from the medicated eye drops, and from the excess tear production, but this is good. You'd rather have them lubricated then dry. For protection, Dr. Newman provided protective goggles to wear overnight. My first 24 hours came and went, then it was my follow-up appointment. This appointment was quick and easy. He had me read the same letter from the day before which I couldn't see. After reading them, post surgery I was reading the letter no problem! To hear Dr. Newman say I have close to 20/15 vision, made my heart sink! Going thru that onion sensation was SO worth it, to hear him say my vision was 20/15! I have my one week follow up next week, and I can't wait to hear more about my progress. I need to continue the eye drops for one more day, but other than that my eyes feel great. This review is purely about the front office experience and relative time management around my wife's appointment for Lasik. We arrived about 30 minutes earlier than they had told us. We were led to believe that they might be able to actually do the procedure earlier as a result and led me to believe my wife might be done sooner. I unfortunately had a certain time I could return, not earlier. I asked if my wife waiting to be picked up would be a problem, and they led me to believe it would not. Great. I either I misunderstood or they were very mistaken in setting our expectations. What I think occurred was rather than just sticking to the original schedule, they shuffled her appointment to be later and actually caused my wife's original appointment to get delayed by 2 hrs. In the end, she sat waiting for over 3hrs. By the time I got back, she hadn't even had her procedure. I ended up waiting 45 minutes. All I got as an explanation was 'you did arrive early.' And 'it just takes time' with a shoulder shrug. I appreciate that they were trying to solve a problem, which wasn't a problem as they stated her waiting wouldn't be a problem. Now after the procedure, it is VERY CLEAR they did not want to manage a patient waiting in their waiting room going through the post-op pain. This review is strictly for the Hercules office and the day of my PRK surgery. I arrived about 15 minutes ahead of my scheduled surgery and was checked in right away. After filling out some consent forms I was called into the back about 20 minutes later to run some pre-op tests. Although my procedure appointment time was at 1pm, I didn't actually go into surgery until a little after 3:20pm. And this is the main reason why I had to remove a star. The waiting in the waiting room was a bit annoying, and I got more anxious as more time passed by. The surgery itself was quick (about 15-20 minutes total) and painless. Dr. Newman is an amazing doctor. You can tell he has done this procedure thousands of times, and throughout it all he was very comforting and reassuring. I want to thank the entire staff at the office for making my first procedure of any kind such a smooth process. Although the wait time was quite grueling, I can understand that things can get busy and appointments get backed up. They were professional about it and apologized to me for making me wait. As far as the PRK recovery goes, I would say the first three days were very painful. Your eyes will be burning and feel like you've been cutting onions..I found cold compresses and ibuprofen to be very helpful. Definitely make sure you use the antibiotic and steroidal eye drops as directed. You will find yourself lying in bed in the dark for the first few days, but podcasts help the time go by faster! I didn't step foot outside outside the house until about 3 days and even then things were still quite blurry and my eyes were still sensitive to the light/sun so I had to wear stunner shades. It's been 3 weeks now and although I can't see perfectly clear quite yet, I feel that my eyes are slowly but surely getting there. Main side effect I have now are dry eyes, but preservative-free lubricating drops help a lot with that! If you're looking to get Lasik/PRK done, I would highly recommend you get a consult with the offices of Dr. Newman. I had done extensive research, asked around amongst my friends who got Lasik/PRK done, and got quotes from the most reputable doctors in the Bay Area, but Dr. Newman had the most reasonable rates. Definitely helps if you have an employer FSA to use too. Getting eye surgery was a scary idea at first, but I definitely don't have any regrets. If anything, I only wish I had gotten it done sooner. My first visit here was for the consultation to see whether or not I was a candidate. The staff did a very thorough eye exam and went over the pricing with me at the end. The next step was to schedule the actual procedure. I came in on Monday afternoon to get the surgery done. My appointment was at 2:30pm but the staff advised that if I can come in earlier, that would be better. We got there around 1:30pm and there was about 5 other patients who were waiting. I walked in and was greeted by name by Ron. He asked us to take a seat and that he would be right with us. About a couple minutes later, he called me into a room to go over the post-op procedure with me. I was given a "post-op package" contained with Pred Forte eye drops, preservative-free lubricating eye drops, goggles and sunglasses. Sunglasses for when I leave the office, goggles for when I sleep at night to prevent me from damaging my eyes when sleeping. In the waiting area, there's a flatscreen TV where they play family movies. It's a pretty nice lobby area - leather seats, plenty of magazines, plenty of room, and comfortable. When it was my turn to go under the laser, I was a little bit nervous. They offered valium and I declined. When I sat on the bed, I was offered a blanket and asked again if I wanted valium. Again, I declined. During the procedure, Dr. Newman spoke the whole time, so I was never kept out of the dark with what the next step was. This was very helpful because, of course, I can see everything that's going on! From the moment I laid on the bed to when I sat up and read the time on the clock, it was probably less than 5 minutes. The procedure is quick and painless! Why didn't I get it done before? That's what I keep asking myself. GET IT DONE! You will be so glad you did it! No more glasses, no more contacts! Update post June 2021 The wait here is ridiculous. I've been waiting for over an hour and a half for a quick procedure that was only suppose to take a "few seconds and you'll be in and out." They need to schedule patients accordingly. Post for March 2021 Expect a long wait when getting your lasik procedure done. It took 2.5 hours when I went. Paper work does not take too long to fill out, but you're pretty much waiting 1.5 hours in the lobby. They run a few scans on your eyes and the procedure alone takes less than 10 minutes. It takes a minute for the numbing drops to kick in and the laser lasik is completed in seconds for each eye. The follow-up appointments require less of a wait time, but it does get busy sometimes. I've been researching places to get Lasik surgery for quite some time now and I saw great reviews from this place. I sent in an inquiry from their website last week and the next morning I got an e-mail response from Stephen. I wanted to know if I'm a good candidate for the surgery before I open an FSA next year. I called in to schedule a consultation and I spoke with Stephen on the phone, he was very friendly and informative. I actually kept on changing my consultation date this week because I had a few things going on but they were always nice about rescheduling. I finally came in yesterday and had my consultation with Dr. Ong the optometrist for the Hercules office, it took about an hour for the whole entire consultation. She was nice and soft-spoken. She did a full eye exam for me (typical of what you would do at any optometrist office.) . She checked my eye pressure, prescription and my eyes were dilated and given numbing drops when she measured the thickness of my cornea. Mayra sat down with me and described the Lasik process and went over cost. She answered all my questions thoroughly. Dr. Newman does his surgeries at the Hercules location every Tuesday and Thursday and one Friday a month. They didn't pressure me to schedule my surgery or anything. They didn't even ask for a deposit. All the did was send me home with brochures and and info packet. Love how they don't force you into the surgery. I'm definitely going to be going through with my surgery once I get my FSA this coming January! I can't wait! Oh yeah and did I mention that their office is so nice and new!!! This review is long overdue. I got my Custom Wavefront LASIK done by Dr. Newman nearly a year and a half ago, and last I checked at my one year followup, I'm still seeing 20/20. I couldn't be happier with the results. Prior to LASIK, I was blind as a bat without my contacts or glasses. I was -8.50 in both eyes, so unaided, anything past five inches beyond my eyes was blurry. This just made me not want to do a lot of fun things, including camping, water sports, being anywhere where my eyes could get wet, being in really hot places where my contacts might dry up, etc. Plus, I was getting pink eye or a little cut in my eye just about annually, from my contact lens wear, and that would force me to wear glasses for about a week. As cute as my rhinestone-encrusted Dior frames were, I still loathed wearing glasses. Well, as fate would have it, I cut my eye about a year and a half ago (to non-contact lens wearers, I know this sounds pretty gross, but I was soooo used to this). My eye doctor told me to lay off the contact lens for extra longer than usual, about two-three weeks, and that was just the last straw. I went home and did a ton of research about LASIK, like the different types of procedures, the tools, the machines, keratome vs. bladeless, etc. Later that day, a local magazine came in the mail and Dr. Newman had an ad on the back cover. I looked him on online and he seemed pretty solid, so I called in and was able to set up an appointment for the next day. And since these are my eyes and I'm absolutely paranoid about surgery and wanted several opinions, I set up appointments for not one, but three other consultations for over the next week. One at UC Berkeley (hindsight: I only recommend maybe looking into that if you have UCB's own SHIP health insurance and they're REALLY slow) and the others at two of the SF Bay Area's most popular and highest rated rated LASIK surgeons (you'd recognize their names even if you don't have vision problems and never looked into LASIK). My very first consultation was with Dr. Newman and I was there for a solid two hours, not just waiting around, but getting tests done by his team of nurses for the first hour and then I got to actually got to meet Dr. Newman, who was so patient with me and spent nearly an hour answering all of my questions. I'm sure I would've left a lot earlier if I didn't have so many questions, but I had A LOT of questions, and he answered them all to my satisfaction. He showed me how the procedure would be done and the machines that would be used. He said that I could even come by and watch a procedure later that week (from behind a window in a different room). By the way, Dr. Newman is AWESOME in general. He's super bubbly, energetic and nice. I remember one of my first thoughts when meeting him was, "I'll have what he's having". He's very professional, but also has a fun, boyish charm to him that just put me totally at ease. Leaving Dr. Newman's office that day, I was pretty certain I'd being getting LASIK there, but I stopped short of setting an appointment then because I just wanted to be sure. Well, here's what happened at the other consultations: There was a lot of waiting and my actual face time with the doctors and nurses, about 20 minutes at each place, felt rushed. Instead of talking to me, these other places had me watch videos and read pamphlets. One place had me take a written quiz afterward. I only got to meet my actual surgeon at one place. And overall, these other places all felt generally cold and uninviting compared to Dr. Newman's office. So it was settled, and I set up an appointment with Dr. Newman because I felt most comfortable with him and his team. It should also be noted that his price was also 40%-50% less than the three other places that I went to. I'm no baller, but when it comes to my eyes, money is no object and I'm willing to spend to get the best. It was most definitely an added bonus that what I felt was the best ended up costing me the least. Honestly, I don't remember much about the day of my surgery as I was in a daze for most of it. I woke up early, got there, took a valium, and was probably in surgery for all of 2-3 minutes. Then I went home and spent the entire day sleeping. The coolest part was right before the surgery, the nurse pointed at a clock and asked if I could tell the time. I could only see the outline of the clock. Immediately after I sat up from my surgery a few minutes later, I could tell the time. Getting LASIK at Dr. Newman's was definitely one of the best decisions I've ever made. Results differ for everyone, but for the most part, from what I've experienced, I highly recommend it. Five years counting and my vision is still strong at 20/10. However, this update is because I've heard (unfortunately) from several other Yelpers that referrals were no longer being honored at the same rate, which I find in poor taste. Why? Because previous patients/clients are their free marketing tool. So I apologize for my referral not amounting to anything but when I went in, they honored a referral I had from a friend so I did receive a slight discount. I still recommend this center compared to the others I had consulted with because of the following: 1. Get the opinion from your ophthalmologist first. They run the actual vision tests. My doctor told me after my annual check-up that I was a good candidate for the procedure. 2. No sales pitch. Never. Shouldn't feel like you are buying a car. If you are uncomfortable with anything being presented to you, leave. You are paying for the service, so you have the power. 3. Dr. Newman has the perfect personality to hold your hand through this somewhat odd procedure. But my experience and results have been more than perfect and I have to confess, his talking through the process made me comfortable and at ease. 4. The payment option offered to me was acceptable and doable. I paid a down payment, then did payments for a year. Easy and something I could afford. 5. Go where the experience with the operating doctor makes you feel the most comfortable because ultimately, each experience is/will be unique, including the recovery process. After exhaustive research on LASIK centers in the Bay Area, Newman Lasik won the title! There are many places in the Bay Area to get LASIK. If you are willing to pay $3-4k PER EYE I suggest you go to either Scott Hyver, TLC, Pacific Vision, or Dr. Bindi. Each center more or less uses the same technology (it will mostly come down to the Allegretto laser and the VISX CustomVue). All the centers have great testimonials and you are bound to come out with excellent vision regardless of which type of laser you choose, but the catch is that other centers cost much more. These other centers spend incredible amounts of money on advertisement touting that they are the "official LASIK doctor of so and so NFL team." They in turn inflate their prices as they proclaim to be highly regarded by celebrities and professional athletes. Don't let the advertisement fool you into paying more than you should. I chose to do the CustomVue LASIK with keratome blade procedure. Don't be fooled by the "All-laser" procedure advertisements. While keratome uses a blade, it is 100% painless! It is as much pain as someone gently rubbing your eye. The recovery time for both the All-laser treatment and the keratome treatment is the same. The only difference is that the All-laser treatment is a couple hundred dollars more I had the procedure last night and drove to my post-op appointment this morning! (The only pain post-op was a bit of stinging, which goes away after you take a nap/go to sleep). Bottom line, Newman Lasik charges $1650 per eye for the CustomVue LASIK with keratome procedure. This comes to a total of $3300! I emailed almost all of the centers in the SF Bay Area and Newman Lasik by far was the cheapest and most affordable option. To top it off, Dr. Newman is kind, personable, and informative (answering any and all of my questions). During the procedure, he informed me of what was happening/what was going to happen and reassured me that everything was going great. After the consultation I knew I wanted to get the treatment done asap. I scheduled my surgery for the following week. DAY OF SURGERY You need a driver to take you home after the surgery. They went over the instructions for the medication and the payment plan options. I opted for the 2 year 0 APR finance plan. They offer valium to calm your nerves which is optional. The procedure was a few seconds per eye. It was a bit uncomfortable and you felt some pressure but no pain since they put some numbing drops in before the treatment. I think I was in and out in 30 minutes. I couldn't open my eyes or clearly see after my surgery but each person reacts differently. I was advised to get some rest and sleep for the rest of the day. NIGHT OF SURGERY After the surgery I was tearing a lot and throughout the night. Once the numbing medication wore off I felt the stinging pain in my eyes. It felt like onions being squirted into my eyes. The pain was so bad that it caused a terrible headache. So make sure you have heavy strength pain meds handy to get you through the night. I think someone from the office also called that night to make sure everything was okay. DAYS AFTER SURGERY The next morning there was no more pain or tearing. I took the day off from work because it was advised to not strain your eyes. My vision was still a bit blurry. I had to go back to the doctors office the next day to examine my eyes and everything was fine. As the days progressed my vision became more clear. I wasn't allowed to wear eye make up for 2 weeks which sucked but I wasn't going to ruin my eyes over self consciousness. MEDICATION Two different types of goopy drops that you are required to use a few times a day with a few drops in each eye. It will cause eye boogers and seal your eyes shut after a long night of sleep. This stuff was thick and I hated it but I wanted my eyes to heal properly. FOLLOW-UP APPOINTMENTS After the surgery and the next day appointment there are a series of follow-up appointments to examine the health of my eyes periodically. Okay so Dr. Newman just called me (after reading my previous review) to explain why he preferred not to do PRK on me. He even quoted some studies from Emory. I really do appreciate him taking the time to explain to me why he preferred PRK and made it clear that he could've done the LASIK but thought it would be more riskier for me in the long run. I guess it would've been nice if he had given me this information in the beginning. Like I said in my previous review, Dr. Newman is really nice. He's very professional and obviously cares about his reputation. He's definitely worth checking out for a consultation. I'm not hating on Dr. Newman and his staff, I just suggest you get 2 or more opinions to compare doctors, offices, prices, success rates, history, service, etc. Which you should be doing anyways. read more

My story: I HAD negative 6 vision (in both eyes - one with a slight stigmatism). While I loved my Ciba focus dailies (contacts)... I had grown rather tired of putting them in every morning and having to remember to take them out at night (which often times I'd forget and wake up with gunky tired/angry eyeballs). My optometrist finally gave me two thumbs up for my beginning to research LASIK and referred me to U.C. Berkeley Refractive Surgery Center. Being raised by a frugal Korean mother, I knew that while UC Berkeley surgery center had outstanding reviews - it's almost always better to shop around a little to make sure that you were getting the best bang for your buck. I honestly have not a single bad thing to say about UC Berkley's facilities -- In fact their staff was also wonderful and I would have gone ahead with the procedure with them if Dr. Newman's office had not impressed me as much as it did. Newman Lasik executed my consultation, surgery, and [so far] follow up with seemingly effortless perfection. For my consultation I began with Dr. Ong - who was very friendly - she measured my corneas, checked my prescription, and all kinds of different procedures were done that... ((as I have a terrible memory that can't be fixed with PRK)) I can't really remember- but basically I felt like I was fully checked out and taken care of. After my full eye assessment I got to meet with Elena (she has an accent - but don't let this slow you down from communicating with her! She's brilliant, kind, and super awesome at answering/explaining any answers to all questions you may have.) After my assessment we found that my corneas were right at the borderline of a safe LASIK procedure, so having PRK done would be not only financially easier - but also safer for my eyes. HOWEVER - just so you all know -- the healing process of PRK is INDEED far more painful than LASIK. I hope that I never have to go through that healing process again because it was indeed painful - but STILL I have no regrets for choosing PRK over lasik because my vision is AMAZING. It has been just short of a month and I'm already able to see amazing details and was told that I still have a month to go for healing... so it could get even better!!! (I seriously pray that this is the case... to have 25/20!?!? That'd be so rad!) For the surgery - I went in on a Tuesday afternoon and was out relatively quick. Make sure you eat before your surgery - I had forgotten, but Elena provided me with 2 delicious "KIND" bars - and water... (Haha... Cuz she's so kind!!! Haha... the whole staff really is though... corniness aside.) I finally got to meet Dr. Newman for the procedure... he was friendly, energetic, and funny. I forgot what he said - but he made a joke about a band/psychedelics while I was under the laser and I couldn't contain a laugh. As soon as I got home I knocked out and woke up to pretty much the worst pain I have ever felt in this lifetime. Frozen peas were my friends. My eye's Tuesday night and all day Wednesday felt like they were swollen throbbing burning balls of fire. For the first two days my parents and sister would put the necessary eye drops in for me (oh - by the way there are 2 main sets of prescription eye drops you'll need to buy- an antibiotic and steroids, I recommend using them as prescribed- that's all I did). I was barely able to move from bed and I wonder if I could've put the drops in myself... hm. I'm glad I had family to help me here. I would not recommend PRK if you live alone and have no one to come baby you. I kid you not. PRK is no joke in regards to pain. On Thursday the pain had abated significantly but my eyes were still irritable. (With PRK there are lenses that are put on your eyes to protect them for 3 days after the surgery- I think this may have been the issue at this point.) My vision was blurry - so I was slightly worried that my surgery was not successful. Then Friday morning I went in for my first follow up/lenses removal - and left feeling a lot better. There was still some irritation, and my vision was still blurry- so while I was discouraged, Dr. Ong was very cheerful and assured me I was healing as expected. I woke up Saturday and went outside early in the morning - and I kid you not... I cried. If you knew me you would be slightly amazed. I don't cry very often and typically enjoy containing my emotions. I was able to see the trees across the street with so much color and vividness that I just never caught in my contacts- however I was floored. It was still blurry up close- but distance!!! - I could see my neighbor's trees! That was mind blowing and yes. I cried... since then I have gone in for another follow-up, and was tested to be 20/20 by Dr. Ong - but still have a whole month of healing ahead of me. SO COOL! If I get 25/20 I might cry all over again. ANYHOW- if you have any questions - feel free to ask. I HIGHLY recommend Dr. Newman's if you're looking in to PRK/LASIK. read more

This review pertains to the consultation for the Wave Front Lasik 2/19/15 and procedure preformed on 2/24/15. I have worn glasses and contacts all my life and was sick of being so dependent on them. I was down to my last pair of contacts that were already scratching my eyes (plus I'm going to Europe soon and want to see!) and knew it was to the point where I could either make a appointment at kaiser for a eye exam then order the contacts, pick them up etc.. or just go and make a consultation at a Lasik center. I was doing some research and looking online and every time I found a lasik center with a impressive website the yelp reviews from actual patients were horrible so I went straight to yelp for centers in the Bay Area and Newman lasik center had by far the best reviews not to mention the most up to date technology for the best price. I made a appointment the next week 2/19/15 for the consultation which went smooth where the ladies who work at the front desk (didn't meet Dr. Newman during the consult) explained the procedure in detail and the different options and finance/payment plans. I made my appointment for the procedure the next Tuesday 2/24/15. I went in for my 5 o'clock appointment after work with my mom aka the driver and it was very busy there (since they only preform the procedures on certain days, if I remember right it's Tuesday and Fridays). I was given a Valium and watched as people came out of the operating room seeming groggy but happy. At 7:30 my turn was finally up, i was given a blanket and laid back in the chair. The procedure itself took in total 7-10 min including 5 minutes for all the numbing drops, then the fun begins. They place this little hollowed out soft plastic spoon thing that looks like a magnifying glass without the glass over and around your eye lids and press down so your eyes feels a little suction then the machine on the left sits on top of your eye and Dr.Newman (in a soothing tone) says to look up at the black screen, this creates the flap. (9 secs long) Then the other eye. After your swiveled to the right where you look into this bright light (the laser machine) it sounds like a loud x-Ray machine and you are instructed to look into the light as you here it go "zap,zap,zap!"(20 secs long) You should hold your breath here because you do smell burning and thanks to the yelp reviews I knew to do this, then your done! You sit up and can see the numbers on the clock! On the drive home you do start to feel the drops wear off and I was expecting the pain to be well what I've heard, but actually it just feels like when your leg falls asleep and you have that tingly feeling and your eyes are super watery. I just kept my eyes closed, was spoon fed dinner (thanks bf!) and went to sleep. In the morning I could see perfectly except it was hard to focus on reading and you can tell your eyes are adjusting, they do feel dry but only as dry as the feeling when your dehydrated. I also noticed how white my eyes were, not sure if this is because my contacts weren't there to bother my eyes or what but they looked great! Absolutely no hallow's "ghosting" or starbursts at all at night time and it will be a full week since I had lasik tmrw and my eyes haven't felt dry or irritated since Friday. Im so glad I got this done, it is still surreal to get up and see clear and ready for the day. Best investment ever! Dr. Newman and his crew are A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!!!! They are very professional and keep you well informed at all times. My surgery took place on Thursday, 12/27/12 and a week later, I'm beyond ecstatic. The actual surgery was painless, there was some pressure to my eye in the beginning of the surgery, but Dr. Newman talked me through it. It seemed the entire surgery lasted less than 5 minutes for both eyes. I'm sure folks that are thinking about having surgery wonder, is there any pain??? Well, I be honest and tell you, I did experience discomfort in my eyes AFTER the surgery, but that's to be expected right? I mean, you are taking lasers to the eyeballs. LOL. You know what, a couple hours of discomfort (after the surgery) is so worth it for long lasting vision! I was blind as bat before the surgery, and now I can see very well! I don't miss my glasses or the contacts that would dry out my eyes. Hopefully my review helps someone else. You're in good hands, if it's Dr. Newman handling your surgery. Do it! You wont regret it. I had my lasik 4 days ago, and it was absolutely the best money I've ever spent. I was extremely nervous beforehand, but thankfully they provide Valium to help with the nerves. The whole procedure itself took about 3 quick minutes. And Dr. Newman talks the entire time to coach you through it, he's great. Immediately after, I could see, but everything was hazy. The numbing wore off on the drive home, and my eyes were burning and stinging, and EXTREMELY light sensitive. So, take some NyQuil and Tylenol PM and call it a day. I slept for 5 hours and when I woke up, my vision was perfect, 20/20. My only side effects are dry eyes so far, and slightly more light and screen sensitivity.... but I'll take that over being blind as a bat. If you're hesitant at all to pull the trigger, don't be, it is 100% worth it!! Thank you Dr. Newman! read more

Motive : After done some calculation, turns out that : lasik surgery equals to 12 years of Acuvue spending. Seems like a great deal. Objective : to be free from wearing softlenses that keep my eyes dry. Well, I hate wearing glasses. The Big Day : I've done LASIK surgery in May and found that they are all attentive and expert in this field. I was scared to death at the surgery room but Dr Newman and Suzanne kept me sane. He talked during the procedure in step by step motion which was very helpful so I knew what was going on and expect (like the burning smell). The surgery took only about 10 minutes for both eyes and it was actually a painless procedure, no blood involved, everything was instant and safe. And what I love about is I can see clearly right after. *woohoo!* They gave complete post-procedure kit and UV-safe shades too. Competitive advantage : Their price is reasonable. I didn't do price match with other lasik center but I heard from my friends that lasik center in San Jose and San Francisco is slightly higher in pricing. So location could be the reason, however Hercules is not that bad, just a little bit 'hidden'. Ow, they offer 0% financing as well. My Lasik Wavefront surgery was done 5/5/09 and i love that i can buy sun glasses now and have 20/15 vision. I had -2.25 & -2.50 with a slight astigmatism and thick corneas. If your ever thinking about doing it...it's worth it. I already sent 2 of my friends for a consult(1 is having PRK done on 5/7/09, 1 has appointment 5/12/09) More friends and coworkers at Genentech are going there this month. BTW...I went to Scott Hyver in Daly City and they charge way more money for the same procedure. Update(11/7/2010): My eyes are still great after 1.5 yrs. I can't say enough about Dr. Newman and the staff at Newman Lasik. Outstanding professionalism, care, and overall quality. My vision was around -7.00 and my eyes are extremely dry. I went to two other offices before Newman. The first saw me for literally 10 minutes and said nothing could be done for me and the second didn't really tell me if LASIK or PRK would be better for my situation. I ended up checking out Newman's Daly City office and was given a very thorough check and explanation by the staff as to what could be done about my situation. They suggested we deal with my eye dryness first and recommended some gel drops and ointment for me to use. They also offered for me to meet Dr. Newman so that he could check out my situation and give me his opinion. Dr. Newman was very reassuring that PRK would be the best option for me, but he recommended waiting a few weeks to give the drops and ointment time to clear up my dryness. He explained that the healing process and results after PRK would be better when my eyes are in better condition. Over the next few weeks, I was shocked as to how clear my vision got just due to the drops. Not even my regular eye doctor after all these years of dry, irritated eyes ever helped me as much as the team at Newman. After a few weeks of the drops and ointment, my vision had gotten so much better and my cornea was smooth and healthy enough for the correction just as Dr. Newman had expected. The procedure was so quick and painless. Dr. Newman was very comforting through the entire process explaining what I was about to feel/see as he was doing the surgery. I was only in a bit of pain after I got home when the numbing drops wore off, but I just took a Tylenol, went to sleep, and was fine by the time I woke up. I couldn't be happier with the results. Funny story: I work at a middle school in Oakland, and this February for Black History Month, one of the teachers decided to have the warm up each day be reading about an influential African American and their contribution to society/the world. Turns out Patricia Bath was the first to invent the LASIK lasers and procedure. Anywho... my coworker and I were in the class when they were discussing the procedure, and she happened to mention that she was loosely considering the procedure and had even done some research. She went on to mention some names, including Dr. Newman in Hercules. She said she had even gone to a consultation in the past and had been quoted. She assured me that it seemed that Newman was the best around and that if she did decide to do the procedure she would probably go with him. Our spring break as coming up where we had a week off work. About a month before our break I called Dr. Newman on a whim for a consultation to discuss the possibility. Immediately after the meeting I scheduled my surgery. That's just how I roll. I had considered it for years and my cousin had done the procedure and love it, so I just decided to do it. I trusted my coworker enough to know that she had probably done extensive research, and I simply rode on her coattails somewhat ;) The office is very nice and the staff is thorough, professional, and polite. They did say my name a lot, which I know is a seller's secret, but it really worked. They answered all my questions and were always there for me when I called with additional questions and concerns. Dr. Newman is incredibly nice and personable. He just seems to have this permanent pleasant demeanor that can't be shaken. My crazy dad came with me the day of the procedure and was waiting out in the car rather than coming in and making sure I get downstairs okay. I was a little difficult during the procedure and was closing my other eye when it should have been open. I was a little anxious. I mean it is something holding your eye down with some pressure. I couldn't help but close the other eye out of instinct. Newman did talk me through the whole time in a soothing voice. So, it took a few more seconds than it normally would and my eyes were super sensitive. Dr. Newman made sure one of his staff walk me downstairs. I can see, and I sometimes forget that I don't have contacts on because I have been vision impaired for most of my life. It's something that I am still getting used to after only three months, but it is something that Newman has made sure I am comfortable with. I still need the moisture drops every now and again, but less and less as times goes by. I'm going to have my third follow up appointment shortly, and I have no complaints or worries to date. read more

"My husband had his lasik consultation at the Hercules, CA site, but had the actual procedure done at this Sacramento site. The staff at both places are super nice, and they offer the same services at both locations. This place operates like a factory, just doing one lasik procedure after the next. We watched two people get their lasik done, through a glass window in the waiting room. It's amazing how fast it all happens. The staff is very informative and discusses the various options available. Apparently there are two different types of lasik available now, and they'll go over the differences with you and you select whichever one you want. Basically, the more expensive one is the latest technology, but the less expensive one will still suffice. My husband's procedure went just fine. He had it done last week. He says Dr. Newman talked the ENTIRE time as he was performing the lasik, telling him what he was doing and what to expect to feel/see. For five days after the lasik, he had to put two types of eye drops (steroid and antibiotic) in each eye four times a day. (The eye drops are provided at no additional cost.) And he has to sleep wearing goggles, to prevent him from rubbing his eyes during his sleep. The goggles are not uncomfortable per se, but it makes it impossible to sleep on his side ---- which is horrible for me as the wife, who has to endure the snoring! If you're thinking about doing Lasik, Newman Lasik Center is highly recommended. Lasik is their specialty, and they do whatever they can to ease your anxiety about it. If/When I decide to have this procedure done, I would definitely go to Dr. Newman also!" read more

Just had my procedure done last night after a consultation only 5 days prior. They spent 2 hours on the examination - I was shuffled in and out of so many rooms I thought I was an actor in a farce. Still, I left with the feeling had I not qualified 100% for the procedure they would not have recommended it. The procedure itself went well with a bit of discomfort but nothing terrible. My near vision is now nothing short of astounding - I can easily read 1/2 point type from a foot away. All through this experience the staff was extremely professional. I get the strong feeling that they love what they are doing and care about everyone they treat. They give you a small bag with everything you need for post-procedure treatment including a very nice pair of 'Reservoir Dogs' sunglasses. read more
