I'd been a patient of Dr. Chan for long time until I moved out of state. She's kind, sweet, very thorough and pays attention to details. She's a perfectionist! My family and I are very satisfied with her services; and even though we're out of state we still use her services to have our eyeglasses ordered and shipped to us every now and then. My daughter has high prescription eyeglasses, therefore, they require specialized materials and treatment.  Bright Eyes Optometry has been wonderful and I'm really grateful to Dr. Chan and her amazing staff. I have been looking for a good optometrist for a very long time. In fact, I don't remember having a good optometrist other than the one I had in 5th grade so it's been a long time coming. Janet Chan is warm, gentle and exudes kindness. She was able to figure out my exact prescription very efficiently (usually it takes a lot longer) but she seems more competent than the average optometrist in her ability to arrive at the prescription strength for my glasses. Her office staff particularly the girl who helped me locate glass frames were good at finding something I liked. I essentially found a pair of frames that was covered 100 percent by insurance and for the lens, I brought all the bells and whistles including UV protection (transitional lens), glare and scratch resistance, thin lens and the latest reading/distance glasses which added up to 400 dollars and my last pair of glasses was more than a 1000 dollars. Hopefully I will like the final product in a few weeks. So far, I am glad to have found such a great optometrist in my neighborhood thanks to the referral one of my co-workers gave me recently. read more

First she told me there were Appts avail today and asked what I was looking to sch, then She was trying to make me repeat vision checks and or wait till June to get my glasses when I've been waiting since June to sch this appt. I highly recommend Bright Eyes. I've been seeing Dr. Chan for at least 8 years now? Several of my family members are now patients and they've given nothing but glowing reviews. Dr. Chan and all of her staff are knowledgeable, professional, and dedicated to making sure you are completely satisfied. Recently, I found out my contact lenses were being discontinued and I found the subsequent replacement model uncomfortable. Dr. Chan was very patient with me. She researched different brands and worked with me until I found a brand that I was happy with. On one occasion, I had a friend visiting from out of town who got some type of infection from his contacts. I called Dr. Chan, and without hesitation, she had me bring him in right away on a SATURDAY for an emergency exam. That's unheard of! The new office in Hercules is right off the freeway, super clean, with plenty of free parking. One day she may even convince me to get my eyes dilated. =) read more

She really takes the time to listen to all your concerns and answers your questions with clear explanations and diagrams. She has seen our entire family. She is also seeing my wife today, who also feels very strongly about her skills, expertise, and comforting nature. A while back she also saw my 7-year-old son. She is especially great with kids, non-intimidating, friendly, and fun. I know my son is looking forward to his next eye appointment. Dr. Chan and her staff are amazing! I had a difficult prescription to fit after having retinal surgeries, a buckle placed on one of my eyes and astigmatism in both. That was 12 years ago. The optometrist I had been seeing since the surgery always blamed me in some way for HIS inability to find the correct fit. Nice. Last week enough was enough. My last pair of spares that was a good combination gave out. I was desperate to get a new prescription. I called the former optometrist and he wouldn't fit me in and I had to wait three weeks. If you are dependent on your contacts, you know that 3 weeks without them is unacceptable. So I said a prayer to find an optometrist who would understand my situation, was familiar with fitting someone like me successfully with contacts and who could help me by tomorrow. Then I Googled "nearest optometrist'. Bright Eyes came up first. I called and left a message due to calling during lunch break. Concerned about if I'd ever hear from them, I called number two on the list. The receptionist was only skilled enough to take my appointment request. I made an appointment. Then Bright Eyes returned my call. I already had an appointment with #2 so we ended the conversation professionally. I then called back #2 and spoke with different office staff who answered the phone. Ever found yourself talking to someone and they are in conversation with you and you know they're not listening to you? Such was the case. I've had these eye issues all my life so I know what to ask with the appropriate vocabulary. This staffer did not. Call ended. I called Bright Eyes back. I asked specific questions due to needing to know if their doctor was knowledgeable successfully fitting someone with my issues. The staffer answered what she could and had me talk with a second staffer. She did the same and then had me talk to the doctor. The doctor replied with knowledgeable answers so I made the appointment for the next day and had all my records faxed over from former optometrist immediately. I cancelled appointment with #2. I was desperate. Hate that feeling and I was. So the next day I sheepishly entered the Bright Eyes office due to not knowing if I'd been rude to the staff due to my desperation and still unsure if my hunch was right that Dr. Chan would be able to help me. My previous experiences with optometry doctors and staff was negative. The Bright Eyes staff were kind!! They understood being frustrated with inability to see. The exam with Dr. Chan was amazing!! She understood my situation as a family member of hers had gone through something extremely similar! Dr. Chan had ordered trial lenses in anticipation of my visit and one of the combinations worked PERFECTLY!!! It was the best I'd been able to see in 12 years!!! We recently changed insurances and had to change optometrists - which was fine because our old one had moved to a new practice. I found Dr. Chan's office through our insurance company and it turns out she's down the hall from the orthodontist we've been using for years. I'm always wary about meeting a new optometrist - I'm a nightmare patient - I sleep in my contacts and wear them way beyond the time I'm supposed to. I've been wearing corrective lenses of some sort or another for almost 40 years and have tried pretty much everything. I know my eyes and I'm not afraid to tell a doctor how I am. I am also blessed to have healthy eyes despite how I wear contacts. Dr. Chan was AMAZING. I cannot say that enough. She listened to everything I had to say, didn't chastize me like a bad child and worked with how I am with my corrective lenses. Because of her positive, non-judgemental attitude, I'm getting glasses and am going to work on being better about my contact lens use. This brings me to her staff. I hate wearing glasses. Wearing glasses reminds me of being that nerdy kid in elementary school that all the kids made fun of. I have not found a set of glasses (aside from sunglasses) that I actually like to wear due to the weight of the lenses because of my prescription. But, I was determined that I was going to find glasses that I would want to wear. Her staff sat with me for at least an hour as I tried on frame after frame after frame. They gave their honest opinion and never once made me feel like I was imposing on their time. I found frames we all agreed would look good on me and I look forward to wearing glasses more in the future. All told, between me and my husband who was getting glasses to replace his lost ones, we were there for at least two hours. I never once felt like we were taking too much of their time. We smiled and laughed the whole visit. At the end, I made appointments for two of my kids and will make one for the third as well. I am grateful to have found Dr. Chan and her staff. They are all amazing and I look forward to our annual visits to her office. I know it will be a great experience because Dr. Chan is wonderful and she hires wonderful assistants. I have been seeing Dr. Janet Chan ever since she started her business in Pinole and I lived in Berkeley. Even though she has now moved her practice to Hercules and I have subsequently moved to San Francisco, I still drive all the way to Hercules to see her. She is absolutely fabulous and incredibly conscientious. She always does a complete thorough exam and prescription process and never rushes me if I have concerns or questions. I even called her once in a panic when my eye dilated and she spent a good twenty minutes on the phone with me, running me through some eye exercises and checking the ingredients of my over-the-counter eye drops, which it turned out, had overly concentrated after being in my purse too long. Her staff never mind when I bring my glasses in numerous times throughout the year to be adjusted after my son has bent them out of shape. She has a terrific selection of frames, especially for those of us who need smaller frames or who have a wide bridge. I love the fact that they mail my contact lenses to me at no additional charge, saving me a trip across the Bay and babysitter fees. Oh, and for you parents out there, Dr. Chan's office is very child-friendly and they have videos your toddler can watch, while you have your exam. read more

They are very transparent about the price breakdown and insurance coverage vs out of pocket pays and offering rebate cards for contacts. First and foremost, Dr. Chan is great. She is probably one of the best optometrists I have gone to. She is very thorough, and makes sure you're satisfied before you leave the chair. She has follow up appointments with you when you come in for a contact prescription to ensure that the pair she prescribed is the correct fit. 5 stars for the doctor! The main reason for my review is because of the Filipino receptionist (DISCLAIMER: I forgot her name. Maybe cece? I will be referring to her as the Filipino woman in this review and have nothing against Filipinos. I am Filipino myself) When I was there for my glasses prescription, I felt like she was forcing me to use my insurance for my glasses even though I specifically told her I rarely wear my glasses and I would rather use them for contacts. She continued to push saying it's a better deal to do it for glasses because I need anti reflective, anti scratch, anti glare, high index, etc. to which I again said I do not wear my glasses often. She finally got the picture and spoke to me in a more rude tone mentioning how I only want the most basic glasses but I should still my insurance for it. Fast forward to when I schedule an appt for a contact prescription and am ready to order. I was initially told by the Filipino lady and a different receptionist that my contacts would be covered by my insurance. As I go to order, I'm told i have to pay an extra $50. I get upset and say i was told it was covered. The other receptionist tells me I would receive a rebate for ordering to which it technically will be covered to which I tell her the other woman told me it's covered. I ask for my prescription to which the Filipino was extremely hesitant to give to me and let them know I will be ordering elsewhere because my contacts have been free for the past 14 years I have been wearing them. I left and receive a phone call from the Filipino lady telling me they contacted my insurance and I was right, my contacts are free and I should actually receive a refund for the copay I paid. I then receive a voicemail not even two minutes later telling me I won't receive a refund and that I actually have no choice but to order my contacts through them. I come back to the office and they tell me that my contacts are "medically necessary" so they are covered and that my copay should've only been $10 so I will receive a refund for the balance. I'm told 1-3 days I will receive it and I have no choice but to order from them. Fine, order it. I finally leave. 3 days pass, still no refund. I'm a pretty patient person, so I'm fine with waiting a few more days. 7 business days and still no refund. I call; the same woman who told me 1-3 days was arguing with me on the phone telling me it depends on the bank and she probably said 1-3 days for the contacts to arrive. I told her no and she specifically told me 1-3 days when I asked. She continued to argue with me to which I said whatever, it's fine. Nothing you can do. And she continued to say the exact same things she had already said. I am already an upset customer; she continues to argue with me. What kind of customer service is that? I was given the run around multiple times and not given correct or sufficient info in the beginning. The main reason I will consider coming back to this office is because of Dr. Chan. She is wonderful and you can tell she cares for her clients. This receptionist that I dealt with really upset me. I hope I don't have to work with her again and I am able to work with a different receptionist if I decide to do business with them in the future. Also from what I recall, I never received an apology from the receptionist for telling me incorrect information. I only received an apology from the doctor and she didn't even do anything wrong!
