This office is a total rip off. My mom was referred to this oral surgeon by her dentist. It was made clear to the office that she had heart issues which we were told Dr McDonald and his staff could work with. He charged her hundreds of dollars for a consultation. Then he refused to proceed with her treatment because of the heart issue! Not only did he refuse to treat her but spoke to her cardiologist and said she would have to be treated at a hospital, which would cost her thousand$. This place is a total scam and they should be ashamed of themselves. We told them she was on a fixed income but we knew they came highly recommended by her dentist because they were used to cardiology patients. Nope. They took her money and left her with no solution. If you are looking for a reputable, kind, oral surgeon drive a little further to Dr Blatter in Concord. He was wonderful with my elderly mother and reasonably priced. The whole procedure cost a few hundred dollars more than Dr Mc Donald's consultation fee. Shame on you. read more

Dr. McDonald and his staff are Top Notch! By far the best dentist visit I've ever experienced. The consultation was very productive and informative. The staff made sure I understood everything administratively, and Dr. McDonald took his time to explain the procedure in full and made sure I was 100% comfortable with everything that was going to happen during the appointment. I then went back for the surgery and he again made sure I was very comfortable and at ease. I had ZERO pain after the anesthesia had worn off which means he did a great job. I took my teenagers for a consultation for wisdom teeth pain. Dr McDonald was concern about my teenagers weight and didn't want to do the extraction in his office and sent us to UCSF hospital! (As a professional surgeon you need to be ready no matter of a persons weight, this made me very uncomfortable) Dr McDonald's office said they will send the paperwork referral to UCSF and expect a call. A whole week passed and never got a call. When i called UCSF they said they never received the referral, called Dr McDonald's office and they forgot to send it. When I call UCSF they didn't had any appointments and wanted me to wait for a month just for a consultation appointment. When I call Dr McDonald's office to get pain meds for my teenager they denied it and when I tried to express my complaint the receptionist was talking over me and didn't let me talk and tried to even argue with me. I would not recommend this office they are rude and unprofessional! read more

I was referred to Dr. Michael McDonald for consultation on a tooth which required removal. Dr, McDonald was able to examine the tooth and take an X-Ray, and within 30 minutes of walking in the door, the tooth was removed with no complications. He did an outstanding job of explaining the procedure and assured me that I would be able to drive home with no issues after removing the tooth. His staff was also excellent to explain all the steps prior to the removal. I would recommend Dr. McDonald in a heartbeat. He and his staff are caring and extremely good at their tasks. My son had his wisdom teeth removed and Dr. McDonald was very good about explaining the procedure, both before and after, and it generally went well, with a bit of a bump in recovery that was assuaged by a follow up visit. I can't say the same about the staff in this practice. I found the office manager to be intrusive and pushy. During our first intake she absolutely insisted I not help my son fill out the paperwork. I couldn't believe how insistent she was being, about something that didn't concern her at all. I called back to make another appointment for myself and asked to speak to Dr. McDonald directly. We had talked about an issue I was dealing with during one of my visits with my son. Same office manager absolutely refused to let me speak with the doctor without giving her a referral, even though the doctor had been very solicitous about seeing me for a follow up to address my issue. I imagine Dr. McDonald has no idea how off-putting his manager is, but unfortunately, I won't be the one to tell him. read more

My Dentist referred me to Dr McDonald to have my wisdom tooth pulled out. Hearing other peoples story when they had theirs removed, I prepped myself for some excruciating experience. But I was pleasantly surprised because everything went so well and almost painless. The only negative thing is setting up an appointment for consultation, availability is like in 6 weeks! If you're in pain then you're screwed. My pain was bearable so I im okey with it and was told they will call me if something earlier opens up. I didn't get a call. On the day of my consultation, appointment time was on the dot. Dr McDonald and his staffs explained everything thoroughly my options, procedure, insurance etc... They scheduled me for surgery right away. Dr McDonald has this very kind demeanor too so i felt I'm in good hands. On the day of surgery, again, they were on time. Surgery was a breeze! In one hour or a little more, I was in and out of the clinic. Surgery and recovery was almost painless. Im just very hungry ( no food after midnight the night before surgery and soft food only after the surgery) A week later, i went for my follow up check up. I was in and out in 5 minutes! Then the following week again, same thing, In and out in 5 minutes! I would definitely recommend Dr McDonald and his staffs! I got all 4 wisdom teeth pulled yesterday 4/29 and everyone was great from the moment I walked in for a consult. Dr. McDonald and his staff were really great making me feel comfortable and explaining in detail the procedure and after care. Sorry. I can't give a good review. My dentist's office called Dr. McDonald's office 12 days ago to get me in to remove an infected piece of root that was remaining in a back molar. They didn't answer the phone. I left another message when I got home saying that I was in some discomfort. I waited Thursday afternoon and Friday for a call back. Nothing. Fortunately, my dentist's office got me an appt. with a surgeon in Albany, who DO answer their phones, and the problem was dealt with the following week. TODAY (12 days later) I get a phone message from Dr. McDonalds office saying they had trouble with their messages and asked if I still needed help. I came to Dr. McDonald's office last year about my wisdom teeth being removed. I was not ready to do it at that time so I put it off until two days ago. Two days ago, I called to make another consultation appointment and I was able to be seen yesterday. When I got to the consultation, I spoke to the doctor again, watched the wisdom teeth removal video, and scheduled my appointment for TODAY. Well, I went in this morning at 7:55am, had the procedure done, and was back home by 9:45am. You guys, I GOT ALL FOUR WISDOM TEETH REMOVED THIS MORNING and was able to sit on the couch and successfully work from home for a few hours afterward. My throat is a little sore and I did take a few Advil to help me with pain once since being home. But, it isn't even 2pm yet and the swelling in my face has gone down and other than my throat hurting I feel 100% fine! Dr. McDonald and all of his staff are TERRIFIC! I have been referred to 2 different oral surgeons by my dentist when she deemed my case a little complicated. The first clinic called me early in the morning to set up an appointment. She was so rude over the phone that I had to tell her that I'd call her back. I never did. I called the second referral, Dr. M. McDonald's clinic, and I was glad that the receptionist was a million times better than the first receptionist who called me. As far as I'm concerned, the receptionist is always the deal breaker. They're the first ones you talk to and see when you get in the office. They are the reflection of the doctor/dentist who will be working with you. Getting to the dentist's office was even a better experience. The reception staff was so welcoming and so nice that they made me feel comfortable right off the bat. When I met with Dr. McDonald for the consultation, he explained to me the details of the procedure. During the actual tooth extraction, he explained to me what he intends to do before actually doing it. He continued talking to me making sure that I was doing okay. I know this process since I also work in the medical field as a nurse and this is what I would have done as well during any procedures with my patients. In the end, the procedure went without a hitch. He didn't have a heavy hand. I was even surprised when he said that the tooth was out. WOW! His dental assistant, Michael, was also awesome! I was experiencing pain due to a cavity in one of my wisdom teeth -- my dentist said it need to come out ASAP and to just take the rest of them out too. He gave me some pain meds and recommended a couple places. After checking availability and Yelp, I decided that Michael J. McDonald, DMD's Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery practice in Pinole was the best fit. Excellent choice, I might add! I grew up being afraid of the dentist but that went away here quickly. I went in for three visits -- the consultation, surgery, and post follow-up. This is a great practice/team! The office is very clean, lots of magazines, cool dance music (vs easy listening doctor music boo) The entire staff is very friendly, knowledgeable, and approachable. Wow! Dr. McDonald is kind-hearted, funny, and explains everything crystal clear. Sidenote: He kind of looks like Ethan Hawke. My surgery was a breeze: went under, woke up with no wisdom teeth. Followed the post-op instructions down to the t and recovered quickly, pretty painlessly too (the recommended 3 Advil tabs 3x a day was perfect for me -- not a Vicodin fan, even though that was prescribed too). After having a previous consultation with another oral surgeon who was charging thousands of dollars to simply get my wisdom teeth out, I decided to listen to my dentist and take her recommendation for Dr. McDonald out in Pinole. And boy was I glad that I came here instead! From the get-go, making an appointment was a breeze, and I was even able to come in for my consultation the day after requesting for an appointment. During the consultation, I received the panorama x-ray which was displayed on the tv while Dr. McDonald explained everything in-depth about everything that would be happening before, during, and after the procedure. They even showed an additional short video afterwards to cover all the bases. After the consultation, I went in the following week to get all 4 wisdom teeth removed and they were done in a jiffy! Not too much bleeding and I didn't look like a chipmunk for more than a few days. I especially appreciated how the office checks up on how you're doing later on the same day after your procedure, and how they have post-op appointments to make sure everything is healing correctly and you don't have any dry sockets, etc. My mom also had a procedure done here a few years back and highly recommended him as well. If you're nervous about getting any tooth work done, Dr. McDonald will put all your worries to rest and make you at ease. read more

The office was very clean, his staff very friendly and helpful and Dr. McDonald was very gentle and took the time to listen to my questions and concerns before and after the surgery. I had put off having my wisdom teeth removed for many years being scared of the procedure. I did end up having a difficult recovery due to my situation (being older and having impacted teeth removed) but the staff and Dr. McDonald were there for any questions I needed answers to and they even called a couple times to see how I was doing after the surgery. read more

From the super friendly receptionist to the Dental assistants and the impeccably clean facility, I had a great experience here and i would recommend anybody that needs work done to come here! I had to get all 4 wisdom teeth removed, I called, made an appt for a consultation, got my X-Rays done, I got to see them on a wide screen TV, Dr. Mcdonald came in and explained how the procedure would take place, how the anesthesia would work, how to keep swelling down and what to expect afterwards. They showed me a short video explaining what the surgery would be like and the possible (very rare) complications that could happen. Since I just went through 3 cycles of chemo, Dr. McDonald made sure to contact my oncologist to make sure I could go through with the procedure, she said yes after reviewing recent blood tests. The receptionist made me an appointment for the following week to get my teeth out. A week later I am back at home with minimal swelling almost no pain whatsoever and I will have my post op check up in about a week! I highly recommend this place! like I said, super clean facility, friendly staff and everyone there makes you feel at ease! read more

They would not bill the secondary insurance and then send me a bill. They wanted $1000.00 up front. I did not feel that is right. I would definitely recommend anyone having a tooth extraction to do so here. Dr. McDonald takes his time to explain the procedure as well to answer any question you might have. I was referred by my Dentist and i'm very happy i followed through with the process being that i was very terrified due to all the awful stories my friends told me about when they had there wisdom teeth removed. During my surgery i was really relaxed and felt zero pain. I went home with instructions on how to care for my mouth and during my recovery i was quite surprised my face never became swollen like a chipmunk, just a bit on one side but not noticeable at all. They gave me Norco which i only took for the first 3 days then after that i just let it take its own course but even after that never felt any pain.. and just in 2 weeks was was ready to eat normal just making sure i cleaned very well. So to end this off if your having doubts about a tooth extraction please don't.. get it done here and you wont regret it. In the end you'll laugh on how you were overthinking the whole thing for no reason. read more

About 2 months ago I had 3 of my wisdom teeth pulled out. Dr. Mc Donald was very informative about the whole procedure. Sally is great on the phones. I'm giving this business 1 star because they did not explained well my insurance part and I am paying the whole amount out of my pocket. If they would have called the other office to check what other work I had done and my remaining of my insurance money to use and done their work on time, they would have been able to let me know my insurance was not going to cover it. But they didn't. And now almost two months later I receive a letter stating my insurance didn't cover it. That is something that could have been avoided and I was fine to wait until my insurance was able to cover it. This is just not ok! I am responsible person and I will pay for it but for the future .. People be careful and make sure your insurance will pay for the procedure because clearly these people didn't mind telling me or they just didn't do their job. read more
