Needless to say, their "paperless" is a load of crap, as you must have a PAPER copy of proof of residence. Yes, it is 2018 and not 1956, so my lease and all of my utilities are paperless, and they would NOT accept an ecopy, and would not allow me to print (they told me they "can't print here", even though there is a printer 3 feet away on their desktop. I left, ran home and grabbed the ONLY paper I have with proof of residence - my USPS confirmation of mail forwarding - and returned. I arrived right at 12:00 at the door (I'm literally less than 10 minutes away) and the lot was almost empty and the door locked. Yes, they claim to be open until 12. What a friggin waste of a beautiful Saturday morning. Government incompetence at its finest.

I recently had to the DMV Service Center for a title/license plate transfer and like most people, I dreaded going in there. Years ago, I worked in the automobile business and the DMV was about the last place I ever wanted to visit, but had to as part of the job. In the old days, you had to stand in a serpentine line and get a number, like a supermarket delicatessen or bakery. You got a ticket for #85 and you looked at the red LED sign that said, "Now serving 52" or some other number eliciting a load groan. You'd find a chair and enjoy the ambience that could best be described as Early American Prison Mess Hall. When you did get up to the window, you might encounter a reasonably nice person or a transferred prison guard, or at least, someone with that "rules are rules" attitude. If you didn't properly dot your Ts and cross your I's, you got sent back to the chairs to get the form right. Not unlike a high school history exam. No longer! You still have to stand in line to get a number. Nowadays, you get a number that has a letter preceding it. The letters are a code for your visit's purpose. Today it was C for drivers license and I was for title and license plates. You can't tell where you are in the queue because the I and C numbers are very different. Numbers are called by a disembodied, but pleasant, computer voice that are also displayed on large video monitors on either end of the hall. People are still taken in order, first come first served, but the decor has changed from Battleship Gray and tan to bright colors and decent lighting. And the chairs are reasonably comfortable. The window operators today are there to help, and work with you to make sure everything is correct - at least, that's the kind of operator I've met here in the last few years. When I had my drivers license renewed a few years ago, the photographer (button pusher, actually) made sure I was actually smiling in the photo. Some of the tricks to avoiding long lines include getting there early, like right when the doors open. Download proper forms from the Wisconsin DOT website and get them filled out in advance. Have all your ducks in a row, and try to go on Tuesday-Thursday, in the middle of the month. Mondays are miserable days to go because everyone else does. The week before the end of the month is awful because procrastinators are trying to get renewal stickers. Or mail it to Madison. But sometimes, ya just gotta go to the counter. This one is one of the better ones.

After we arrived in Wisconsin a few weeks ago, I looked up info online to see what I needed to do with trepidation. Surprisingly, it was simple to apply online and schedule an appointment. On the day of my appointment, I arrived at this location a few minutes early. I brought the paperwork that had been listed online. I was checked in very promptly. I waited with a pretty sparse crowd for no more than 10 minutes before I was called to a counter. The lady at the counter was very kind and helpful. (Another lady at the counter next to mine answered the phone a few times while I was there, and she legitimately had the nicest phone voice I've ever heard at a DMV--so nice it really stuck out to me.) I got my license taken care of and my car registered in about 15 minutes. The efficiency and kindness at this location was very unexpected but greatly appreciated. I have no plans to go back to the DMV anytime soon, but when it's necessary, I won't be as pessimistic about it. 5/5 stars relative to other DMVs in other states.

The greeting line went relatively quickly for a government office, even though there was only one person working. Once I was checked in and got my number, I only spent a few minutes talking to the man in a pimp suit next to me before my number was called. The attendant was friendly and efficient. If you can look past the bullet holes in the car next to you, and get over the environment inside, it is a pretty painless experience at 10am on a weekday.

The line to check in moved very quickly. The employees manning the front desk were friendly and efficient. After you check in and get your photo taken, you get a little receipt with a number on it. There are plenty of places to sit while you wait for your number to be called. The numbers are called in order of your arrival. Each time a number is called, it is displayed on two television screens on opposite ends of the waiting area. It shows which number has been called and which desk to go to. This is really great because you can easily track when and where you need to step up. I was called to desk #1 and was assisted by a woman named Becky. She was friendly and helpful. I don't have any complaints about my experience here.

Mind you, if you don't have the things, you will be turned away. Oh and proof of address needs to be something like an energy bill & mortgage statement. I filled out an application upon arrival, waited in line, had my photos taken, and then waited for my number to be called. It was a fairly seamless process, because I had all that was needed, and only cost $14 which really surprised me. All in all, be very prepared with what you're coming for. Multiple people were (rudely) turned away during my visit and no one really wants to have to make more than one trip here.

Using the WisDOT website, I submitted a request for the video and within a day, Scott from the Traffic Management Center provided me with a disc that shows the incident and allowed me to speed up, slow down, and zoom in on the footage. While not CSI-quality, it perfectly captured the incident and was just what I needed. I really appreciated both the fast response and thoroughness of what was provided, a great use o f my tax dollars!

I ripped the stuff off the check and handed it to the clerk. She saw me rip the stub off and must have thought that was a little strange so she looked at the check took it over showed it to one of her co-workers another work co-worker came over they looked at it then the floor supervisor came over and looked at it then they took the check and went into the supervisors office in about 5 minutes later they came back and told me they couldn't accept the check because there was no watermark on it. I told them just call the bank that's all you have to do they have a number you don't have to talk to anybody you key in the account number the check number and the amount and see if it would be any good and the computer will automatically tell you that you don't have to waste time and talk to anybody. Might only take a few seconds. This was the first time in 50 years in Wisconsin that anybody has refused to take a check from me when they said they accept checks as a method of payment. If you keep records you need to check to prove payment. It is impossible to to figure out the fees but I can give you a rundown of this 12-year-old automobile titled and licensed for Wisconsin. Credit card processing fee $10.95 counter service fee $5 sales tax $243.75 registration fee bonded $85 title fee $157 wheel tax $25 county sales tax $24.38 supplemental title fee $7.50 for a total of $558.58.

While things were somewhat busy, we had an appointment and got to go into the short line (yay us!). Upon checking in, they send the driver to wait in their car (we were 20 minutes early, which was interesting - long wait in a car). After passing the test, we had to get back in line (which was short at this time - yay us!). They quickly processed us and gave us a number. By the time we filled out the form, our number was called. bang-boom, we were done. Very efficient! All staff there were very friendly. I was impressed with their efficiency.

The way the asks office is working now was a bit confusing to me. You make appointments…read morenow--something implemented as a result of the pandemic, I think--but I don't think you can make them far in advance. When the appointment system says that appointments open at 6:30 am daily, I think that means you can't make an appointment before 6:30 am on the day you want to go. That has its ups and downs--not having to wait weeks to get an appointment being one of them, but it's annoying to have to wake up so early just to do it. I know their system if having various stations must work for them since they've done it this way since time began but it's super annoying as a user if the DMV to have to stop here, then go there, then sit over here and wait to be called by those people, etc. Having said that, I was in and out of here within probably 30 minutes or fewer, which was nice. The folks were not overly friendly, but they got the job done. This location is in what is or was a shopping center, so parking is plentiful.

Went in to renew my license as well as get the Real ID. Brought the necessary paperwork and showed up for my appointment. Showed my phone with text message showing my appointment to the man at the door. No line, went straight to the first desk and showed the lady my paperwork. Around the corner I went to the camera for my mug shot and then I was given a number to finalize and pay. Jan finalized the paperwork, she was a pleasure to work with. Very efficient, and I could tell they liked to have fun at work, who doesn't. Very professional...will definitely go back there going forward. I usually go to the Schaumburg DMV but this one was by far a better experience. In and out in 20 minutes. Well done Lake Zurich.
