I completed the SheBuilds program today and decided I deserved a little treat for the certificate I…read moreearned. I had tried to go to the huge Asian styled building called Oriental Imports off Gateway several times but it was closed and boarded up even though Google Maps said it was open. Turns out it's closed and the owners have moved across the street literally and have a smaller space called Oriental Market. It's been open for about 6 months and I swear I've died and gone to Chinatown. It was "Big Trouble" for my wallet alright. I wanted to buy everything there...all the tchotchkes and snacks and tools and clothing and decor! From Chinese cheongsams, to Korean handbooks, to Japanese kimonos, clothing is definitely authentic and you don't have to worry about sizing since you can see the fit there, unlike online. The market portion has a lot of snacks and sauces and basically they've taken the most well known and tasty brands and stocked them, so they've weeded out the hundreds of off brands a bigger marketplace stocks in the hopes that you'll try another maybe cheaper soy sauce etc. It's just easier to find quality stuff here, imo. I got a lot of snacks and even got a Kaiju t-shirt that vaguely reminds me of the Jurassic Park logo, so it's mildly ironic. The quality of the items were far better than the actual Chinatown stuff I grew up with in Los Angeles, but we'll see as I use them over time. I'm so happy I don't have to wait to get my Chinese ointments and wait for Weeee to ship my stuff online. There's now a super cute local place I can go to get them and the prices and service makes it even better! Coming from Brooklyn to Dallas…read moreand now El Paso I've been missing the ease of just grabbing dumplings or any sauces I need. I was pleasantly surprised with the selection available. Sadly the pricing reflects the fact that you're in El Paso. Nearly double what you'd pay at a Chinese market. So that stinks. It beggars can't be choosers. Some of the items didn't look too fresh and it was a little dusty in some spots. So not a lot of rotation of products. But overall was happy to grab some dumplings and egg rolls!

Wan Jia Le has pretty good reviews so we wanted to check out what they had! The store is in a little strip mall right off the highway but the sign is big so you can't really miss it. They have a pretty big space so I was naturally excited to see what they had. I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of products they sold but unfortunately they were missing a few stuff I was looking for. I noticed certain items they keep low stock of as well. The chip aisle definitely looked like most of the products had been sitting there a while. I noticed the produce didn't look the freshest either. They also offer fresh seafood options but I would be wary of that since I don't know how long the fish have been sitting in the tanks. Overall, Wan Jia Le supermarket is a pretty decent spot if you're nearby and know that they carry what you're looking for. But honestly I'd rather go to Arirang Market closer to the northeast side of town. They had EVERYTHING I was looking for and their stock seems to be newer and rotated often.

Went to the Eastside yesterday to try to get my car washed for free at the new Tommy's which turned…read moreout to be a bad idea since it started raining again. Decided to make the most of it and stop by Weird'O Beardo Jerky and taste his meat. I've seen them at the farmer's market and never got to try them, but they just opened a cute store off Montwood, right around the corner from Ono Shaved Ice! He had a lot of flavors to try and it's the thin type of jerky that goes with the carne seca drinks. They had a lot of the vendors they work with at the Country club Farmer's market on Saturdays and the Upper Valley Farmer's market on Sundays. From the festive decor to the candied applies, popcorn, caramel, teas, freeze dried fruit and candies, and last but not least, my favorite chamoy Chamoylicious_ep, it's a fiesta in a store! Pretty much a great place showcasing the flavors of El Paso. If they sold glass mugs, pinatas, and some decor, you can actually do a one stop shop for a great happy hour party at home! In fact, all of the store seems to look like it's to celebrate your taste buds. I'm happy that the Eastside has easy access to all the goodies that the Westside gets at the farmer's markets, but kinda jealous they don't have to wait til the weekend. Come check them out and truly #supportlocal. Oh and also get the boba and shaved ice at Ono Shaved Ice while you're at it. I rewarded my kids for the drive with a large shaved ice split 2 ways. I rewarded myself with a brown sugar boba. Can't wait to have the rain go away so I can wash the smells from my damp car.
