Wei Restaurant has a beautiful, modern interior that feels elegant and inviting. The décor is definitely the highlight of the experience and creates a lovely atmosphere for dining. Unfortunately, the food did not match the beauty of the space. We ordered the 9-grid sampler, and it was disappointing for the price. The chicken was dry and lacked flavor, the edamame was plain, and overall the sampler felt more like a Costco-style appetizer assortment than something you would expect from an upscale Chinese restaurant. The presentation was nice, but the flavors were underwhelming. The Dongpo Rou was probably the most flavorful dish we ordered and the standout of the meal. It had more richness and depth compared to the other dishes. However, the beef rice noodle soup was a major disappointment. For a dish that should have a comforting, aromatic broth, it lacked the savory depth and flavor I was expecting. It felt very flat and left me wondering where the flavor was. I was especially excited for the pork xiao long bao, but unfortunately that was another letdown. The dumplings kept sticking to the container, causing them to tear and lose the soup inside. The whole experience of a xiao long bao is enjoying that flavorful broth held inside the delicate dumpling, so having the soup spill out before you can even eat it really took away from the dish. The service was pleasant, and the restaurant itself is beautifully designed, but at this price point, I expected much more attention to both flavor and execution. Wei has a gorgeous atmosphere, but the food needs more refinement and consistency to match the elegance of the space. Went there with a group of four on a Tuesday. Ordered two Chicken Chow Mein, Shrimp Fried Rice, and Pork Dumplings. Food was okay nothing spectacular, especially for the price. Too expensive for amount of food. Service was TERRIBLE! Waited at least 30 minutes after all food and drinks were gone, had to ask for our bill and then waited another 15 minutes to finalize bill. This place is an absolute joke! I cannot possibly express this further than what I'll say. We walked in with my family and mentioned we have a sesame seed allergy. The kind waiter informed us that most products were made with sesame seeds but they'd check with management to see what doesn't contain this allergen. They returned stating everything can be made without sesame seeds. We ordered some dumplings and fried rice. A few minutes later, the waiter had said everything we had ordered had sesame seeds and only the single dumpling can be consumed. I left a $20 for a $12 fried dumpling and ran out. This tip was left because the waiter did try to give us a heads up, but management assured us otherwise. I had reservations but there was still a short wait, which we kind of expected for Father's Day. As we were waiting, we noticed multiple people being turned away due to not having a reservation. When we were seated, there were quite a few empty tables. Even as we were leaving there were still empty tables. I figured it would be overcrowded because of the occasion. We were warned that the portions were larger and meant to be served family style and the food would come out as it was ready. The shredded chicken was not really shredded like I was picturing in my head, but small pieces. It wasn't dry at all considering how small it was sliced. The braised pork belly was a fairly large sized chunk. I feel like it was braised with Chinese five spice and star anise among other things. It was very tender. The vegetable chow mein was very flavorful and the noodles were perfectly cooked. The curry chicken xiao long bao was a little too spicy for me. I couldn't taste anything but heat. The braised short rib was served on top of green beans, onions, and carrots and a side or rice in a pot. It was fall off the bone tender. My favorite item was the clay pot rice with Chinese sausage. There was a slight sweetness to it and there were bits of crunchy rice at the bottom that was slightly caramelized with the sauce. About halfway through, we noticed there was a robot server. It kind of sneaks up on you. One of the servers crashed into it when they turned around. It might need a bell when it goes through the dining room. I hope the table the food was meant for didn't wait too long for a replacement. The interior was clean and cozy and there wasn't much noise echoing like many busy restaurants. My husband and I had the opportunity to visit Wei, a new Chinese restaurant in downtown Anchorage during their soft launch and so we lept at the opportunity. We made reservations for Wei and wound up there half an hour early. We sat at the bar for the vibes. We ordered the 9 grid sampler box, spicy cucumber salad, shrimp fried rice, green beans with garlic, lobster scallion noodles, and pork xiao long bao. I noticed a lot of similar favorite dishes that I would frequently order at Din Tai Fung, so I was very excited upon ordering. They even have a window where you can see the chef make the xiao long bao!!!! There is a LOT of seating at this restaurant! The chandelier at the entrance is beautiful, the under counter lighting at the bar is cool as well. I love how upscale everything looks. It's also cool how the have an order kiosk at the front for those that just want to place a Togo order to take home. Since we sat at the bar, the bartender Phoebe, served us, she was very attentive, respectful, and kind. I've read some of the other reviews and one of them was sort of shocking, coming down on a brand new restaurant while it's in its soft opening is just not the energy Anchorage needs. I have been so excited to see new life being infused into downtown Anchorage. Having lived and traveled throughout the country I've always had access to Din Tai Fung or Doughzone so having something that is even remotely close is a huge win for me. Dining in should be an experience, it's not fast food, so there shouldnt be an expectation of crazy speed, anyway I digress but thus far Wei has been an experience that I have enjoyed. First items out of the kitchen were the garlic green beans and the shrimp fried rice. Both dishes looked beautiful in least in presentation. The shrimp fried rice was a bit bland and dry, but soy sauce fixed that. The garlic green beans were *chefs kiss* excellent. Next up was the sampler box and lobster scallion dish. The lobster is sooooo tender!! The sampler box has a great mix of appetizer dishes. My fav was the cucumber salad and the vegetable egg roll. The xiao long bao came up next a long with a complimentary vegan dumpling. The ginger had a nice ginger flavor and the wrapper was a little thicker than I was expecting. The vegan dumpling was so delicious and flavorful too! All in all this place is setting itself up to be a phenomenal place and I see myself coming here more and more!! read more

The lunch menu is delicious. We had the pork and chives dumplings. So fresh and delicious. My husband had the Hainan chicken rice bowl which he loved. I had the tofu veggie noodle soup. The serving was so large that I made two meals out of it. The inside decor is so beautiful. They've really done an outstanding job remodeling the space. I highly recommend giving this place a try. If you're not bothered by by poor-mediocre service but tasty authentic Chinese then Wei is your place. We had looked at the extensive menu on line, but when we arrived just a few items were being offered. The food was good when it eventually arrived, but it was all an effort. Ordering drinks was onerous. There were five of us and not one of us managed to get the drink we ordered. Either they were out, "just" ran out, or confused by what we were asking for (it was on their menu after all). You would have thought it was their opening night, not a year into business by how confused and frustrating the service was. There was just 1-2 staff who were trying to be the hostess, bar tender and wait staff and which all were a failure. Our server was utterly hopeless. We had to ask four times for her to take our order (the place wasn't all that busy) didn't know the menu, could not take our drinks order and then our drinks were not even added to our bill. We had to literally hound the other guy for our drinks bill (lucky for them we are honest and just didn't leave!) I work as a nurse, and was so excited to finally go out, and this experience was incredibly disappointing and frustrating. The five of us all live here in Anchorage, and have money to spend. Unfortunately for them though, we will likely not be returning. read more

Unfortunately, it was clear that the service was lacking. After waiting and staring at the server and the bartender, she finally decided to come up to us. When we asked for a table, she asked if we had reservations, which we did not. She then said that she needs to talk to her boss and asked us to go to waiting area. As we were waiting, two other parties of two walked out from waiting. We waited for yer to come back and when she did, she looked back and forth from a distance and walked away. We never did get an estimated time to be seated nor an updated after talking to her boss. Thats when we decided it was not worth waiting longer as she seemed clueless of serving/waiting customers. I want to start by saying this place has a lot of potential. There were three people in my party, and it was all of our first time dining here. Our server was friendly but seemed a bit scattered, as did the rest of the staff. There were 3 employees on the floor with only several tables sat by the time we were able to order, yet service moved slowly, almost as if the restaurant were slammed, which it wasn't. We were confused about what was happening. We ordered the 9-grid sampler, shrimp chow mein, pork belly bao sliders, and two specials. Unfortunately, the sampler wasn't put in when we ordered and didn't arrive until halfway through the meal. One special was pork belly with sauce and rice, and the other was fried pork with a sweet chili-style sauce, also served with rice. The 9-grid sampler was good but pretty basic, wouldn't get it again (6/10). The bao were okay. Two people in our group said they oddly reminded them of Costco combo pizza (7/10). The shrimp chow mein had a nice garlic flavor but needed salt and was only lukewarm (6/10). My husband enjoyed the pork belly special (5.5/10). The fried pork special was the standout dish of the night, easily the best thing we had (8.5/10). My biggest complaint was that all of the dishes came out at very different times, which is especially frustrating when the food can be shared family-style. I had the immense pleasure and treat to dine with Wei on night 1 of their soft opening week. We had a table of 5, were greeted promptly & warmly, and escorted through the BEAUTIFUL dining room to our table right away. Our server was the delightful and bubbly Phoebe. She was very knowledgeable about the menu and helped guide our experience the entire way, recommending sake/cocktail pairings and suggesting menu items that would complement other items we had ordered to share/try. We had the soup of the day (which was Hot&Sour, beautifully balanced and piping hot), chicken wings, vegan dumplings, lobster & scallion noodles, beef short ribs, bok choy, green beans (AN ABSOLUTE MUST TRY- think Din Tai Fung but BETTER), and a few different types of hot and cold sake. If we had room in our bellies to order more, we absolutely would have! We watched the GM, Chris, touch base with every single table in the restaurant, which further exemplified how much this entire staff CARES and wants their patrons to have the best possible time in their establishment. Everything was a total 10/10- from service, to environment, to the food itself and the speed at which everything was coursed/arrived at our table. Wanted to love this place but... The Fried rice was oily not just normal oil. No egg to absorb the oil. Presentation was on spot. The long bau's were over steamed. The pork belly baus were spectacular. The bok choy with garlic was oily and not eatable the oil pooled on the plate with very little garlic. No soy or salt offered trust me it needed it. The sauces were good. The appetizer platter had mostly good items. (Fried shrimp from a bag) the cabbage, "egg rolls" and pickles cucumbers were good. All the dim sum options seemed like they were cheap frozen items. Sampler box did not include the spicy potatoes, broccoli salad or the bbq pork and nothing was said about the substitutions. Frozen fried shrimp was a sub and I was with someone that had a shellfish allergy and it would not have been ordered had we been told. The others were swapped with a tiny iceberg lettuce salad and premade seaweed salad that came out of a tub. Soup dumplings were dry with almost no broth. Did not try any entrees. Service was inattentive and nearly nonexistent. Being 2 of 4 people at the bar it took far too long to get a drink, nothing was said about substitutions the kitchen made to what was ordered, and to top it off nobody came to ask how the food was or check in. I understand that a soft opening will have its hiccups, but the fact that not one person between bartender or manager cared to ask anything about the food or service during the peak time to dial things in is very telling of how little attention and care is being put in to this launch. read more

We've been several times since they opened late 2025 and the food and service last night was excellent once again. We started with fresh & hot Pork Xiao Long Bao and some spicy cucumber salad appetizers. Then the main dishes started coming out (they are delivered as they are prepared, so no sitting under a heat lamp); Wonton soup, shrimp fried rice, green beans with garlic, Wei shredded chicken with Chinese pancakes, and Prime Rib short ribs! Our server was incredible, funny, and super attentive while still having tables on the other side of the restaurant! (which is quite a large restaurant) The food was unreal and then our server brought out our cake and a robot that sang happy birthday. 10/10 experience , I would absolutely come back and bring more people to this downtown gem. read more

Wei's Restaurant is pleasingly aesthetic, I loved the decor and the utensils. I was really impressed with the food especially the garlic green beans, who knew something so simple turned out to be out of this world! If I had a question regarding the menu my tables waitress Phoebe answered for us and was filled with knowledge of the restaurant and food, she checked in with us regularly which we really appreciated. Overall, even though it was just a soft opening, I would definitely go back to Wei's restaurant once they are officially opened! read more
