While service was great, the food was at best mediocre. The steamed bbq pork buns were great bust everything else, from the soup dumplings, to the fried rice was a shadow of what it should be. The rice was over seasoned and way too salty and fishy. The shrimp shumai tasted off (we didn't eat them) and the soup dumplings were bland and had a weird flavor. Won't be back here as there are dozens of better options in the burgh. read more

Had takeout today, the shrimp wonton soup and the egg tarts. The soup was tasty, though the broth was a little on the salty side. Could have used more wontons and fewer noodles however. The egg tarts were delicious! read more

We came to try their Cantonese dimsum, and were pleasantly surprised by the authentic flavors. The selection is small, but it is also just a portion of the menu. They have a range of Chinese cuisines including Szechuan and Taiwanese. We ordered pork dumplings (Siu Mai), egg tarts, shrimp rice rolls, pork sliders, fried crispy dumplings, turnip cakes and soup dumplings. I'd say of the things we ordered, I liked egg tarts the best. The crust was soft and flaky. Everything else was average. Maybe even slightly below average if you were to get the same dishes in a bigger city. Turnip cake for example had the right texture and flavor, but didn't include any dried shrimp or pork in the middle. But for Pittsburgh, unfortunately it's one of the better ones. Service was fantastic, hence the four stars. They checked in on us periodically, and were very friendly. Food came quickly after we ordered. I would definitely come back and try their Cantonese roast meats. Overall we had a pleasant experience here. read more

It's hard to find great Hong Kong style dim sum in PA. Chef is Cantonese. Food is good - custard bun, har gao, & dan dan noodles. Shirely, our waitress was awesome!!! She made the dining experience so much better. Will definitely be back read more

Every kind of dumpling is very delicious without dipping it in sauce. When I got home, I used the microwave and it was still delicious. I was super surprised!!!! The portions of fried rice and noodles are huge and only $12.99. Especially the shrimps are made from large shrimps and are of good quality. read more

Phenomenal experience at Wei Lai with an amazing variety of options. I can't wait to go and try a bunch of other options. Also- you MUST try their house made chili oil. It's godly. read more

Cute new dim sum spot off of McKnight! I went in with admittedly high expectations, and while it's not my favorite dim sum/dumpling spot in Pittsburgh, I can't deny its authenticity and warm service. The space itself is fairly nondescript, which allows the focus to be on the food itself. The menu is helpfully spaced into domains (such as dim sum, hot noodles, cold noodles, etc.) for ease of ordering. We tried a wide variety of items! Our dishes included chicken feet, oil splashed noodles, cucumbers marinated in soy and garlic, soup dumplings, pan fried pork bao and shrimp shumai. My favorites were probably the noodles and the pan fried bao! I was slightly let down by the soup dumplings, but that's mostly due to me being partial to some other soup dumplings in the city. They're still good, my expectations were just sky-high! An odd highlight, but the to-go bags were so adorable, so don't be afraid to order too much food for that reason in itself. I hope to return for a true dim sum brunch (the traditional time for dim sum dishes), especially to try the cheung fun rolled noodles and the duck! read more

Excellent food- not greasy nor salty. Very friendly service. I didn't check the ladies' restroom, but will certainly go back next time we're in town. read more

Quick seating on Friday evening. Radish cake is good. Dan dan noodles are spicy, maybe too much for my younger daughter but everyone else liked it. It's got more of a sesame paste or nut like sauce than I'm used to. They were out of steamed pork buns so we got the bbq pork buns which were good. Soup dumplings were okay. Popcorn chicken is tasty. Definitely will be returning to try other things on the menu. Also comfy chairs. read more

Nice, albeit smaller, dim sum selection. Nothing fancy or authentic like served via carts but everything is made fresh to order. There are other menu offerings as well including noodles and the like. The hagao was good, as was the siumai. But the best offering was easily the pork bao. Soup dumplings were ok but probably the one item that didn't live up to my expectations. The space itself is large, accommodating for parties of all sizes. Service is quick and polite. Great place for families or dates. Were the dimsum menu a bit more expansive I would have gone five stars. That said for Pittsburgh, where dim sum is not readily available it hits the mark. And does it well enough. read more

Finally!!! authentic and made to order dim sum and taiwanese food in the North hills! This is the comfort food I grew up eating and am so happy we have a fantastic option in the North home. The staff is so friendly and willing to walk everyone through the menu, but you won't find fried rice or general tsos chicken here. Instead, Western pallettes looking to try some authentic Chinese/Taiwanese food should try: -pork soup dumplings: a dumpling made with pork soup inside the pork filling. -Shu Mai: a pork and shrimp dumpling -taiwanese popcorn chicken: taiwanese style fried chicken -BBQ pork Bao: a fluffy wrapper with a sweet and savory Cantonese style roast pork inside The restaurant itself is very clean, casual and welcoming. Some of the staff may have difficulty speaking English, but please be patient and respectful to them. They know more English than you probably know Cantonese/Mandarin/Taiwanese! read more

We were so excited to try this place and we were not disappointed! The service was fantastic, everyone was so friendly and helpful!upon entering we were welcomed by a server and a neat dining room. The space has been repainted and thoughtfully decorated. The restaurant has an adorable logo of a dumpling eating with chopsticks which is branded on the plates and menu, nice touch! The food was delicious, fresh, beautifully presented. We had an excellent time and will be back! read more

Loved the soup dumplings! Service was quick and food was great. Will definitely be going back.

Food is amazing! They have a mix of Cantonese dim sums and traditional Taiwanese dishes. IMO, the dim sum is probably the best around the area. We tried the soup dumplings and dim sum platter - 10/10, would definitely come back for more. The staffs were nice and friendly. Gave us some complimentary egg tarts which were also the best I've had around this area. The restaurant is clean with plenty of tables! read more

We were so happy with this place! We have been going to Toronto for 30 years having Dim Sum every trip. There have been a few good places in Pittsburgh over the years but they never lasted. The atmosphere is no thrills but it doesn't need to be, as the food was great. We had the dum sum platter so we could try many dumplings, the BBQ pork bao, the radish cakes, chicken's feet and fried dough with sweetened condensed milk. Seriously, nothing disappointed. We got there around noon on a Sunday and by 12:45 it was nearly full. They were out of the rice noodle rolls so I can't wait to come back and try those. read more

the food was excellent. i have had the wonton soup and crystal dumplings. both were excellent. the soup broth was delicate and flavorful. i particularly liked how they packed the soup to go so that the noodles would not get soggy in the broth. also had sesame balls, which were very tasty. service was a little slow. read more

Great weekend special and dim sum place. Twin roast platter is my favorite! The Cantonese style roasted duck and BBQ pork is yummy.

It's okay. Everything we ordered tasted good but I felt like some of the foods came from the freezer or were pre-made. They also charged an exhorbitant amount of money for sauteed bok choy. If you're looking for mediocre dim sum, this should satisfy the initial craving but not a place you'll love if you've eaten amazing Dim Sum. read more

This place is terrible besides the boba, my wife is allergic to seafood, not only did she say multiple times she couldn't have seafood, they still put Nori on her shredded chicken over rice... seaweed comes from the same place... and she ordered a spring roll, and they tried to bring her a crab Rangoon... then said it was white fish not crab... still seafood... they brought her rubbery tofu at least... Also our friend had raw chicken served to her, and she took a bite, she also had crab ragoon and currently (as I write this, has food poisoning). Needless to say, they didn't eat the rest of the food and the waiter had the audacity to ask them if they enjoyed the meal, then didn't even ask if anything was wrong with the meal, and promptly handed them a full check... when all that was consumed was the boba tea... to top it off, they tried not to tip, and the device forced them to tip... no option to skip, or to put a custom one... stay away Response: How are you going to recommend crab sticks to someone with a seafood allergy? Also it wasn't just some food left over, it was the entire plate...please look at the photo of the chicken, that isn't fried twice, and if it is, please turn up the heat and ensure it's cooked throughly, because that is still undercooked severely... we won't be coming back good luck... read more

The dumplings are well worth the wait. We were so impressed with the flavors and freshness and so excited to have a delicious dim sum restaurant in the north of the city! The steam shu mai were fantastic with a tiny Smokey flavor. The crab Rangoon were flavorful. The BBQ pork bao were springy and loaded with bbq pork. The steamed pork and shrimp dumplings were delicious. And the fried bun with condensed milk is like a grown up fluffy funnel cake. So yummy. We will be back for sure! read more

Food was great and quick service. The menu was a little hard to navigate but we go there in the end.

Recently took a Chinese friend there for dim sum lunch. This s a small place in a strip mall with lots of parking. They had a fairly large selection of dim sum and it was obviously handmade and very good with large shrimp in the Har Gow and shrimp and spinach dumpliings. We also got an order of Mr and Mrs Smith which was delicious. We also got a basic lo mein. More than enough food for the two of us. The atmosphere was basic but very clean. The service was excellent. read more

Very tasty menu offerings including a small selection of cantonese dim sum, Shanghai soup dumplings and a variety of noodle dishes. Everything tasted great. The soup dumplings were very juicy with aromatic broth and served with a ginger/black vinegar dipping sauce -- they were easy to eat (but ask for the large white spoons to help catch the juice. The dan dan noodles (in the dry noodle section) had a delicious sesame-based sauce and the Taiwanese style braised beef noodle soup was also delicious. Be sure to ask for their house hot sauce (a fragrant, mildly hot chili crisp condiment), which was great with both noodle dishes. The chicken feet were nicely flavored and, in contrast to other places I have tried recently, were cooked long enough to have the right texture that is easy to pull off the bones. The steamed shrimp and pork dumplings had an amazing mushroom rich flavor, and were good with both the included sweet-sour sauce and even better with just some black vinegar that you can ask for (it comes with the soup dumplings). Aside from the soup dumplings, which came 6 to an order, the choice of providing 5 dumplings for the other options made it difficult for us to split equitably in our party of 3. If you think you want dessert, you should go ahead and order it up front along with the rest of the order. We had to cancel our order of steamed custard buns after discovering how long they needed to steam. Will definitely come back to try some of the other offerings. They do sell out of the weekend specials of Cantonese bbq pork and duck, so come early on Saturday if you want those. read more

We came by on their opening weekend and the kitchen/restaurant were very unprepared for the volume of customers. Took them forever to just get us water, everything was sold out by the time dinner service came around. Nice interior, decent decor. Food was middling, nothing super crazy but it was refreshing to find some dim sum in Pittsburgh. Xiaolongbao was decent and the pork bao was also pretty good. Overall the food quality was pretty good but the lack service and not having enough food from the menu leaves a lot to be desired. They also completely forgot a couple of orders and only told us when we asked 2 hours later read more

Wei Lai Dim Sum - Dim Sum Near Me - Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania

Pricey. It was good but underwhelming on value. I also thought it was hard to get dishes without meat or pork specifically.

Thank God Pittsburgh finally has a great DIM SUM!!!! ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!! Fresh authentic and yummy!!! read more

To start with, the food is pretty tasty (I've gone here 3 times in the month since they opened). However, I think branding as a dim sum place is misleading, since the majority of the menu is not dim sum. As a Cantonese person who grew up on dim sum in Philly's Chinatown and Guangzhou, I've spent 11 years of my life in Pittsburgh awaiting the arrival of an authentic dim sum experience in Pittsburgh (and real dim sum really is an experience). I would say this place is way ahead of The Parlor but still only about 60% there. The dim sum at Wei Lai is equivalent to what one can find at Bao, which is also delicious but much more centrally located and (accurately) does not brand itself as dim sum. What Wei Lai is missing: 1) No carts (restaurant staffing is difficult these days so I can understand this) 2) Nobody working here actually seems to speak Cantonese 3) Really any dim sum dish that is not a dumpling, bun, chicken feet, or lo bak go. Some of the most classic dim sum dishes are absent from the menu (steamed pork ribs, lo mai gai, sesame balls, and the fact that cheung fun is only available on the weekends?!) 4) my personal pet peeve: the tea. The colloquial synonymous term for dim sum is "yum cha," which means "drink tea" - Tea is central to the dim sum experience. They have Lipton tea bags, disappointingly. They don't have to be a teahouse, but PLEASE stock some chrysanthemum, pu-er, and oolong - having the right tea could truly elevate the experience! That being said, I appreciate what Wei Lai is doing to spread the love of dim sum, and I understand that diversifying their menu to include classic Chinese dishes can draw in more people. Again, the food is delicious and I will continue to come here BUT as a caution, this is not like the dim sum you would find in places like NYC or the Bay area (not yet, at least!) read more

I have had dim sum in Beijing, Taipei, Hong Kong, and Toronto. The dim sum at Wei Lai compares favorable in both authenticity and quality. The ambiance could use some improvement. The walls are barren and the tables could use table cloths. That said, you go here for the food. Highly recommended. read more

Best dim sum in the Pittsburgh area, by far! Prices are affordable, and the food is delicious. We've tried many things on the menu, and everything we've had is great. All of the dumplings that contain shrimp have LARGE pieces of shrimp in them- they do not skimp! Excellent for take out or dine in. They don't have carts, but service was excellent. Also the take out bags are great, I love that they're reusable. read more

Food was awesome! They were VERY busy with their soft start. Some smoothing out with the order that items came out, but that will ease once they are open for a bit. Dim Sum dumplings were great! Complimentary crab rangoon. Served my husband to incorrect dish but he loved it and they gave us his order to go free of charge. The spicy dry shrimp wonton noodles were great. Leftovers for linch this week. Took Shrimp wonton soup to go for our daughter and the noodles were packaged separately from the broth. read more
