I went here once in the summertime just after sunset to get a Sierra mist & the cashier person was in such a hurry to scan the 2 liter bottle she knocked it over, causing the soda to get shook up, making it to lose carbonation, which is probably the worst possible catastrophe to ever happen to anyone, anywhere, ever. Although, that event has never happened again despite the only register open after midnight typically being lane 13, which is allegedly an unlucky number & intentionally being done in a deliberate attempt to deter shoppers with Triskaidekaphobia from the store during 3rd shift hours. Otherwise, all supermarkets are relatively similar, selling food items arranged according to food groups & on occasion any supermarket may seem identical to another supermarket-mega-store in certain locations, like the cereal aisle is basically identical at every major grocery store. read more

I would definitely recommend this grocery store! This is the only supermarket I have been to that has a huge selection of prepared meals, whether it is sushi or grilled chicken. They also have prepared meals that you just throw into the oven. Wegmans has a designated section for gluten free and organic food products. Wegmans, however is a bit pricey (mostly their prepared food products). It is definitely a place that you should check out! read more

The groceries here are hit and miss; sometimes you'll find stuff for less than even what you'll see at Wal-Mart, but other times things are more expensive. However, I've found that Wegmans isn't quite as expensive as people seem to perceive, except, of course, for the eatery area... ...which can quickly become ridiculously expensive. The Olive Bar, fruit bar, Wokery, and new prepared foods bar all have a $7.49/lb. price tag, which can really add up quickly. Their subs are excellent and reasonably priced, but their slices of pizza are pretty expensive, but not as pricey as what you may find at a place like Sbarro or New York City. [EDITED 01/13/10]A year since last update. Wegmans has added a burrito bar with beef, chicken, pork, and tofu. For $6 you get a large (compare to the size of Chipotle or Qdoba) burritto with all the fixin's (including guacamole), "homemade-style" chips, and salsa. The quality is hit-or-miss, depending on who you get to make it. Prices on their other prepared food have remained unchanged in the last year. Wegmans is not for adults! After putting all my items on the cashier belt I was told that since I had a 6 pack of beer I would have to go to Aisle 7 or 8 of the 10 open aisles only 2 take alcohol. Maybe PA is against alcohol? As a visitor to this store I think this is ridiculous. I off loaded my items back to my cart then proceeded to Aisle 7. I asked the cashier why the 3 for $12 cokes was coming up at full price. She said I needed a store card. WHAT - where I come from the store gladly uses their card for visitors and especially one from out of state. She also pointed out I had candy 2 for $3 which I was paying full price. Well I told her surely I would not be back and if Wegmans every came to my home town I would NOT be their customer. Down south we treat customers equally and if they looked to Publix they would find what "Customer Service" means. Wow. What can I say about this dimly lit speakeasy. I ate off of their hot bar, and may I say the next guest might have accidentally thought they got soup after I took one bite if the asian noodles and dropped load after load from the orgasmic taste. The lighting is perfect, just bright enough that you can see the food but dim enough to not realize its just reheated chinese for 8.99 a pound. My only complaint is that the staff does not do a good enough job of cleaning up after each guest's orgasmic experience in this fine establishment. read more

OMG wegmans. I'm sorry I doubted you! They have SUCH good muffins and bagels/sweets that it is unbelievable. Their cheese/specialty sections are a bit overpriced, but when you pass those into the normal grocery, I was pleasantly surprised to see that the costs of some items were lower than the super Walmart (packaged cheese etc). Their frozen pizzas and other items that are wegmans brand have been really good so far! I am not a huge fan of the hot bar foods, but their deli counter has DELICIOUS subs, with high quality ingredients that are a huge bang for my buck. There is a big range in how nice the deli employees are, but overall, mmm delicious. read more

The reason I'm giving a low vote is because the buffet food section might look delicious, but it is so disgusting. It's not covered to the point I have seen housefly flying over the food. Wegman's is awesome. Great selection, best price in town (which shocked me) and wonderful selection. Their prepared foods are very well done and it's all real food, no preservatives, etc. The store brand is generally better in quality than the original it's knocking off, so it's a sure thing. The only problem is that things look so good, without discipline, you'll break your budget. :) Having lived in France, and bringing French friends to visit, they've been impressed with their cheese selection. It's not France, but it's the best we've found in the states, and they are willing to allow you to sample things, etc. The new one they brought in for Christmas this year, l'Edel de Cleron, was amazing. In addition, Wegman's offers some local produce, and does not charge higher prices for it. It stays competitive with the other offerings, but you are supporting local farmers. I have a friend who sells them rhubarb, and she gets a decent price for it and is happy with their working relationship. Since the produce is coming from small farms, the chances are good that it's not full of nasty chemicals and sprays. I know hers isn't! I've given up on any of the other stores in the area--there's no need. Wegman's has everything I want, and at prices that beat the others. read more

Excellent quality produce, prepared food, and variety. Excellent deli, salads and soups. Good sushi! Prices are reasonable and this store stays open 24 hours. Slightly inconvenient (how nice it would be if you could walk there instead of taking the bus) but it is well worth the drive or bus ride to get here. Wegmans, the bastion of good supermarkets and booze in State College. I will miss you. The only con I guess I can give is that some of the prices are a bit too high to be comfortable. Two minutes after walking in here, my boyfriend exclaimed, "We need one of these in Nashville!!" My thoughts exactly, despite the fact that my ADD grocery shopping habits could keep me here for hours. My dad and stepmother come here multiple times a week and talk about it constantly. In a town the size of State College with no major city within two hours, I can see why. Wegmans is like the Disneyland of grocery stores. I'm usually not a fan of the huge grocery stores and love my little Trader Joe's, but this place is tough to dislike. The meat, fish, and cheese selections are amazing. They have a huge pre-made meal section and my sister in law swears by the chicken caesar wrap. When I'm here for the holidays I look forward to the bagels and fresh squeezed orange juice my dad buys from here. Then there is what I would refer to as a food court on crack. There's a sub place, a Chinese buffet, a burrito spot, a sushi bar, salad bar, pizza slices, chicken wing bar, and a little cafe to sit and eat or drink an Espresso. My only gripe about this place is that we don't have one in Nashville. How can I make this happen?? read more

Terrific Supermarket! They have a ton of their own products throughout the store. The prices are in line with the other grocery stores in town with the likes of Giant and Weis. Everything is always fresh and tasty! No need to go to other spots. Additionally they have an entire section of pre-made food. My favorites are the pulled pork, mashed potatoes, and mac & cheese. Thank goodness there is a Wegman's in town! It's a great place to stop and grab lunch because there are many self-serve options in the cafe and the prices are reasonable. The coffee shop is good as well. I tried their pumpkin spice latte and it was delicious! I'd much rather stop by here to have a drink than try and fight the long drive-through line at the Starbucks on Atherton. I would have given Wegman's five stars, were it not for the night that my fiance stopped by to pick up a few things, and a young cashier chided him for being "rude" and not greeting her. The first time we went to Wegmans we were pretty blown away. Frankly we had never been to a grocery store as large with as expansive a selection of items. They have a lot to choose from, including organic produce and groceries, multiple different pick your own bars containing various types of salad items and other foods. They have the typical grocery store items in addition to a large selections of cheeses, meats, beer, candy and international foods. After living here for several years, we frequent Wegmans as our primary grocery store because it's extremely close to us. The prices are generally competitive, but we have found certain items to be lower quality than other stores. For instance, we buy some produce like onions in bulk from Giant, because Wegmans always seems to have a couple bad ones in the bag. We also try and frequent the local farmer's markets and the Natural Food store for eggs, vegetables and other items because we try to support the local agriculture and the quality far surpasses that of any grocery store, including Wegmans In general, Wegmans is great, it's huge and definitely worth visiting just for the experience, but don't let it keep you from experiencing some of the really unique options State College offers in terms of locally grown produce, dairy and meat. read more

Wegman's is by far my favorite grocery store. Not only in the area but country wide. They have a wonderful selection of craft beers (my favorite is the make your own six pack), sushi grade fish (which is hard to find in Central Pennsylvania), a huge artisan cheese and meat section, a nice selection of bulk items, homemade breads and desserts, a hot bar with flavors from all over the world, a nicely stocked produce section with beautiful fruits and vegetables, and pretty much anything you could think of. They also have a good selection of ready to cook food items such as pizza, breaded cod, lobster mac & cheese, stuffed pork chops, and more. You can't go wrong shopping here. read more

This is by far the most amazing grocery store I've ever been to in my entire life. When I have issues, they are always so keen to help me with whatever I have going on. If I can't find something? Anyone I ask always knows exactly where it is and that is something I will always treasure at Wegmans. Most recently, I went to Wegmans to purchase one single can of Coke Zero. I went through self checkout, and somehow, I managed to mess something up. In a jiffy, the self checkout attendant, who told me his name was Joey Tyburski after I asked him so I could mention him in this review, helped me with every problem I had in a quick easy and efficient manner. He also had a very vast knowledge of Wegmans, the store and the history of Wegmans, and even encouraged me to continue to come to the store. I really appreciate the amazing service that Joey gave me yesterday at 6:40 pm. Thank god for young men like Joey. I salute you. Oh, Wegmans...I used to like you. I used to LOVE you. I remember when you first arrived in State College and I was enamored by your candy department and international foods section. Once I started driving, I ate many a takeout meal from your cafe. And in college, I went every week to pick up gourmet cheeses, stuffed olives, and various items from your organic department, where I discovered many of the snacks and packaged foods that are now staples on my grocery list. When I moved to Pittsburgh, all I could do was whine about the lack of Wegmans. Returning to State College three years later, all I have to say is...what happened??? The selection of name brand foods has declined in favor of Wegmans brand products, and there have been many instances in which I just cannot find what I want anymore. The last four times I've been to Wegmans, they have not had my preffered mozzarella cheese (Gustosella mozzarella di bufala), but of course they had plenty of Wegmans brand mozzarella! It's like they are trying to be Trader Joe's, but failing, because most of their store brand products are not that great. On top of that, many of the Wegmans brand products I DID like--such as their garlic clove bread and their roasted red pepper bruschetta topping--have been discontinued. Also, the produce department is often out of things. I haven't been able to find apricots or figs all summer. The cafe seems to have diminished in quality too--they took out the pasta station, which was actually really good, and the salad/hot food bars always have the same boring stuff. They have stepped up their sushi game and it's actually pretty decent for grocery store sushi. I also still like their olive bar (except the baba ghanoush, which is gross), selection of imported cheeses and meats, tea department, and bakery. Still, I've been so frustrated with the lack of selection that I have been shopping at Giant much more. I hope that the upcoming opening of Trader Joe's makes Wegmans reexamine where they are going and return to the awesome grocery destination that they used to be. read more

Normally I really like Wegman's for all of the obvious reasons already listed. But tonight I had the most ridiculous and shocking experience ever and I seriously don't know if I'll ever go back just because of how stupid this was. A business that either employs people this lame or that has such stupid policies is really just too much effort for me to even deal with. So my husband and I are in the check-out lane to pay for our groceries. We just made a quick stop in to pick up a handful of items - nothing huge. As the lady scans our items I realize I don't have my Wegman's shopper's card on me and neither does my husband (our bad, I admit...and entering our phone # never works for some reason, but seriously - why do we need a freakin card for every single store anyway?). So we are talking about this as the cashier totally ignores us, doesn't offer us the courtesy card or anything (she didn't even offer to look up our phone number, even though it actually isn't in their system). So my husband turns to another couple behind us in line and says, "excuse me, can we borrow your Wegman's card?" No big deal, right? This happens all the time, people always ask me if they can use my card and vice versa. So this nice couple is like, "sure!" as the lady scanning our groceries (who has been completely ignoring us up to this point, particularly not offering any solutions herself to our no-super-saver-card dilemma) stops scanning, puts up her hand and says in this STERN voice: "WHOA, WAIT, HOLD ON A SECOND" We all look at her and she asks SO MEAN: , "Do you even KNOW these people?" Me and my husband are so confused so we're like, "uh, no?" And the woman just shakes her head and goes, "NO. NO. You can't do that....NOPE. Can't do it." My husband and I, and the couple in line behind us, all looked at each other and were like, "Are you serious?" Which I asked her, to which she just said 'NOPE. I won't do it." No explanation, totally rude and lecture-like, as if we were children being scolded for doing something we knew we shouldn't be doing. Seriously, are we in Nazi Germany? Where the F are we? Is this the free market working in my benefit? I'm so flabergasted at the ridiculousness at the situation that i got MAD! I couldn't even speak, I just stared at her for a second (well, we ALL did) and then i started laughing and said, "this is totally ridiculous". so then she got all pissy and said "I'll have to call for the courtesy card" so we sat there and waited like 2 minutes for her stupid blinking light to attract the attention of a "manager" so we could use the "manager's" club card instead of the card offered by the people behind us in line. It was seriously the dumbest thing I ever witnessed. While we were sitting there waiting for the courtesy card one of the "strangers" behind us in line asked the cashier: "Well if we introduce ourselves right now then technically we'll know each other so will that count?" And the lady opened her mouth to say something but then shut it like she was trying to control her temper. As we were walking out my husband, -- who never loses his patience with ANYTHING, mind you -- looks at me and is like "I seriously don't know if I can ever come back here again, just on principle." And honestly I have to agree. Besides, any joint that charges $7.49 a pound for fried rice does not deserve my hard earned cash, anyway! . read more

I ordered flowers from the flower shop for my wedding a month and a half prior. The girl who took my order told me that it would cost about 60$ total. The day before they were supposed to be picked up, I received a call saying they didn't have the eucalyptus I asked for. I was disappointed, but things happen. I was at work so I couldn't return the phone call until later, & the florist was already gone. I spoke to another woman who said she "couldn't find my order form", but I told her it was okay to use wintry greens instead. My mother in law went to pick them up the next day, and I was charged almost 30$ extra. So, I didn't get what I asked for, was notified the day before, and paid 30$ extra for pine that I could have gotten myself outside my house. Very disappointed. read more

Meh. This place is a hybrid, and therefore doesn't really do anything very well. Don't get me wrong, it's okay (and definitely my first choice in State College for groceries), but it's no Whole Foods. I wish really they would be more consistent with their inventory; they carry things for a couple months and then they're gone. :( And for the love of all that is holy, I wish they would stop moving things around...I'm often in a rush (and/or with babies) and I can't spend 15 minutes trekking the new frontier for a pack of diapers and a box of cereal. The take-out section is expansive but IMO generally sub-par, except for chocolate cake (which is really good). Aesthetically, they've made a real effort, and have spent a lot on design. They even bought new shopping carts that don't feel like they need to go to next door for realignment. But that's pretty much it. Another grocery store now carries a great deal of natural and organic foods that rivals, and often wins against, Wegman's. Like I said, this is my first choice in Happy Valley, but if a Whole Foods opened here, I wouldn't be back. read more

I moved here from LA, and thought that good food was a thing of my past. Wegman's proved to have an extensive collection of gourmet foods and prepared meals. Let me echo the recent negative reviews of the State College Wegmans. We lived in State College in the early 90s (the pre-Wegman days), and when we decided to return ten years ago were impressed by the recently-opened Wegmans. A really nice, upscale store with lots of high-end products. But, as one of my colleagues noted a few years later, their quality peaked the day they opened. It has been a downhill slide ever since, and recently the rate of collapse has accelerated, as recent reviews attest. They are all spot on. We first noticed that "Wegman's" brands were slowly replacing all the name brands on the shelves. Then the butcher disappeared about three years ago, and instead they started stocking plastic-encased mystery meats. When i inquired why, the gentleman behind the counter said it was because they lasted longer. The problem is that, when i buy meat, I want it fresh. I am not looking for stuff to put in my bomb shelter with a two-year shelf life. And, I tried some of it, and it quite frankly was not very good (advice: stay away from the packaged lamb chops). I wrote to the president of Wegman's indicating that I thought a store like theirs should have a butcher. He forwarded the letter to the local manager. Needless to say, the architect of the current strategy was not responsive to my concerns. In my last communication with him, I noted that, in my experience, quality was more than a slogan. I rarely set foot in the place anymore, although I did go by recently and notice the "Sam's Club" decor after my wife complained. The final straw for her today was when she stopped to order a large standing rib roast to be picked up in 3 days for a dinner party we are planning. She was told that they did not know if they could order one, but that he would check and call her "sometime tomorrow". I cannot plan a dinner party on the hope that i will hear from them....someday. Unbelievable. It is a shame what has happened to this place. Every time they cut quality, they drive more people like us (their dream customers: not price sensitive, placing a premium on quality) elsewhere. They lost me years ago, and they lost my wife--finally--today. She is, quite frankly, at a loss for words to articulate her frustration with the decline and fall of Wegmans in State College. Apparently their strategy is to sell prepared foods in their cafe, and beer. I wish them the best of luck, but their customers will not include us. read more

This is a 5 star supermarket. However, I have to give 2 stars because we received a terrible service at cashier Lane 11on Sunday, June 19. In my opinion, the cashier is not experienced enough to be placed on a busy Sunday morning shift. He does not have basic knowledge of fresh produce and could not tell the difference between garlic, peppers and onion. The lady in front of us had scallions and he had no clue what they are. The other customer behind us was rolling his eyes as he had been waiting for at least 15 minutes. This is by far our worst experience at Wegmans but we will still come back as this is the best supermarket in town. read more

Before I decided to move to State College, I looked to see which grocery stores had settled in the area. No Trader Joe's...no Whole Foods...but a Wegmans (whew!), and this one has the great selection of cheeses, natural foods, and ethnic foods that Wegmans is known for. Their butcher counter also has been especially helpful, whether I've been looking for kosher chicken or short ribs or wild salmon. I still miss other supermarket chains (like whoa) but Wegmans makes it all ok. read more

It's crowded even when empty. Everything negative I said in my 7/13 review has worsened. Too many store brands. Aisles clogged with displays. As the number of store-brand coffees has increased the name brands have decreased. The pasta aisle is unfit for a supermarket. It's more like a large deli's. They have plenty of gourmet and specialty stuff. But for run of the mill groceries and a choice of sizes and brands, you can go to any of several nearby competitors and do better. If you're in a hurry, the checkout lines are fast compared to the big box store down the street. But that's about the best I can say of them right now. read more

I'm not sure why Wegmans comes up twice on yelp, they only have one Wegmans in State College . That said I already have a glowing review and have mentioned to more than one person how if I can only shop in one grocery store for the rest of my life it would be Wegmans. This review, however, is about their pizza. The price has just recently gone up, I believe it is like 1150 for a pizza. I love good pizza and I'm on a quest to find it. I've been to every pizza place that I know of in State College and I find Wegmans to have the best pizza. It's cheesy, without being overly salty, you can taste the sauce and it's very flavorful without being too zesty which some people might not like, it's just perfect. You can go into Wegmans and buy one slice, or a whole pizza, and then sit down in the Dining area and have a nice little lunch. If you are looking for something for everyone, they are hot food / salad bar is perfection. Everything from potstickers and every choice for salad, to meatloaf and mashed potatoes or wings! read more
