Update on my last review. Bob needs to retire. He convinced me to have a new HVAC unit installed…read more It's a great unit but his installer is not certified on the unit and screwed up the installation. Over the course of the next 6 months, I had Bob come out 3 times because of various problems as the weather changed and the system would not work. That alone was bad enough, but The last straw was in July when my AC just stopped. Bob blamed it on my smart thermostat (he doesn't know how to operate them or install them....I had to do that) The next day, w no AC I called out another certified tech who found my drain pan filled w water due to wrong installation so it had kicked in the shutoff valve. 4" of water had to be removed from the attic! At least the drip pan worked. Bob showed up at the same time and got pissed off, but then promised to reimburse me for the repair he had missed the day before. How can you not see 4" of water in a brand new drip pan?! I sent him a bill and never heard anything back. He reneged on his promise to make it right. The whole experience was a major pain. We wouldn't use Bob for anything again.

He came out, checked my AC system, and said the cause was a dirty AC filter. I changed it, monitored it for several days, and it still wasn't cooling enough. Called Bob again, he came out and basically said my AC was working perfect, most people would be lucky to have an air conditioner working this well, and it must be all in my head. A month later, I still knew something was wrong with the AC. Called Royal Aire, who checked the system and found it was 2 lbs low on refrigerant. They charged it up, and now it works perfectly. I cannot recommend Bob, based on his overlooking something as basic as a low refrigerant level.

The only downside was that my furnace is in the crawlspace above my laundry room they had to remove the trim and some drywall to get the new unit in there. I would have liked to know that in advance (that the new unit was larger than the space opening could accommodate) because their quote to repair the drywall and trim work was way more than I was willing to pay, so I found a Handyman that would do the work for much less money. Bottom line, they did a great job and I was happy with the overall work. I would just make sure to ask them if the new unit will fit into the space that you have available. Just so that you don't get a surprise extra expense.

It took a week for that company to come out and was told I need to replace the evaporator coils They sent out a consultant/salesman two days later who seemed to discourage ordering the parts because my system is older and he presented me with a proposal for a new $20,000 unit. I thought that price seemed extremely inflated. When I called AH&A Tom, the owner came over right away. He said the first company completely misdiagnosed the problem. He said he coils were very dirty but he was able to clean them off with a hose and they did not need to be replaced. The problem was with the motor which was not blowing any air. He had the motor I needed at his shop so he went and got it, installed it, cleaned the coils and my AC was back on by one o'clock. I am so grateful! I asked Tom point blank what he would do if he were me, replace the unit or repair it and he said he would repair it because I have a good system and when it was manufactured they were built to last and they don't build them like that anymore. That made a lot of sense to me and it told me a lot about Tom. I believe he was truly trying to do the right thing for me. He could have tried to sell me a new system but he did not. I am so grateful to him for coming out so quickly and getting my AC running again. He was like the guy on the white horse coning in to save the day. Not only that but he saved me a ton of money. When I told my adult son about Tom he said "That guy is gold!!" I couldn't agree more. I will always go to Alternative Heating & Air in the future.
