This is the place that I miss most in Athens. Nothing better than a hungover Saturday meal a Weaver D's. Chicken dark...two sides, sometimese three (buttered potatoes, mac and cheese, squash casserole) and a piece of cobbler. A couple of delicious sweet teas to wash it down. AUTOMATIC!!! read more

I've lived in the Athens area for a total of 12 years out of my life, and today was my first visit to Weaver D's. My heart is now filled with regret that I have have never darkened this establishment's doorstep before! I had the white-meat fried chicken with squash casserole and collards, and my spouse had the dark-meat fried chicken with broccoli casserole and mac & cheese. The fried chicken was easily the best deep-fried fried chicken I've ever tasted in my life. (As compared to pan-fried chicken, which is a different experience entirely, but actually my favorite type of fried chicken.) It was very moist, tender, and perfectly seasoned. The sides were all very fresh and not overcooked (as soul food places frequently tend to do). There was still some firmness to the onions and squash in my casserole, and I was pleased to see that the collards were still in the form of real greens instead of the slimy gelatinous mess that you see in many other places (and the flavor was awesome). The mac & cheese was well-cooked and had a nice flavor, as well. To top off the plate, we were served a corn muffin that was not too light, not too dense, and had a delightfully different flavor that I couldn't exactly put my finger on. (Lard? Bacon grease? There's some "secret ingredient" in there, I'm sure.) It was an excellent vehicle with which to sop up the pot likker from my greens. :-) I didn't really like the broccoli casserole, which seemed overly greasy to me. That was the sole blemish, however, on an experience I can only describe as very pleasantly surprising. Athens has many soul-food restaurants... Wilson's, Peaches, and a couple of other notables. Came here again several months ago and was severely disappointed in my meal. We got there when they opened, and many, if not most, of the menu items were still being cooked and weren't going to be ready for a while. Of course, I found this out AFTER we had already ordered and paid. We would've either gone somewhere else or gone to do something else for an hour and come back had they let us know. The food that we did get (fried chicken, fried pork chop, dressing, green beans...and that was the extent of the options available at that time) weren't all that great. My fried pork chop was cold, dry, and soggy. All in all, a pretty disappointing let-down of a visit, which is a shame given how head over heels I was about this place on my first visit. read more

Wow! I had been to Athens once before, before the R.E.M. album. so when I decided to visit again, I had to eat here. My expectations were high but my experience was even higher! even though the side dish choices were limited due to the late afternoon visit, the chicken - THE CHICKEN - was the best I have ever had (no hyperbole)! Came for REM, stayed for the cheap southern comfort food. Really awesome and interesting atmosphere. The first time I came in Dexter Weaver was sitting at a picnic table watching television and eating a bowl of cheerios. Again, interesting atmosphere. The food is pretty good, the casseroles are a bit too sugary for my taste though. I like that they only have a couple entree items available at a time, it adds to the character I think which is certainly something Weaver D's has a lot of. Everytime Mr. Weaver says "Automatic" my heart skips a beat. The food is also really reasonably priced and portioned, and includes sides and a gigantic iced tea or lemonade. The only thing that bugs me is the lopsidedness of the picnic table outside, but Athens is known for its hills after all. read more

Weaver D's is definitely a staple in the Athen's community. Along with it's interesting history link to the group R.E.M. (Want to know what it is? Go there and see for yourself) and being a must stop place to eat for the ESPN analysts and sportscasters when they are at UGA, the people in Athens love this place. Now don't go and bring a huge group of more than 8 with you. This place at most seats around double that number. Very small, but it has it's old southern and tradition feel with it's teas and lemonade out for those who bought it to refill. Now I have to admit I don't drink too much sweet tea and lemonade so I cannot give you a good review on how theirs is. Yet I have tried their pulled pork, fried chicken, and pork chops, and they do them all right. True to the southern taste and feel of soul food they are all absolutely delicious. The macaroni and cheese is delicious as well. I grew up on having to try various and different types of southern diner and soul food (Yes a person of Korean ethnicity descent being raised on soul food... and not drinking too much sweet tea? Yeah a little hard to believe myself but it's true)... and this place is one of the best. They make their food in a way that's true to the southern feel. Not saying that this food is for everyone though. Southern food is messy, greasy, and heavy. The food really sticks to ya and takes many people I go with their to an automatic food coma. But I tell you this, they go into their food coma with a big smile. read more

This was so much fun for me. Easy, clean, great atmosphere. We went on a Thursday about 12:15 and there weren't any long lines. We were immediately greeted, told what was on the menu for today and asked to tell the lady behind the window next to the register what veggies we wanted after Mr. Weaver rang us up. (MC, VISA, Cash) For those of you who have no idea what it's like, this is a homey southern soul food kind of place, but it's very different in two regards. Unlike others, it's clean and well-lit. The people there are all colors and all ages and our friendly neighboring diners were a young white guy and an older black guy sitting together having a great discussion. We were seated on big, comfy dining chairs unlike what you ever see in a restaurant. There's tables pushed together in the center for four ppl. each or you can do a two-seater table on the side. It's small, but it's laid out well. Admittedly had they been full, it would've made me feel a little weird. Sometimes when you go to a 'historical' restaurant that serves southern food, you end up fighting the flies for your food in an un-air conditioned hole in the wall- THIS IS NOT THAT PLACE. Great fried chicken, but the sides were ok. Wish they had fries and also like my sides a bit warmer than what I got, but the chicken made up for it. The place was a bit divey, there are long benches inside, where diners can dine together. Don't mind that at all. Also there's limited out door seating. went around 2-3pm on a wednesday - spent 20 for 2 white chicken plates and 2 drinks (buttered potatoes, broccoli casserole, and mac and cheese) - had to pour the sweet tea/lemonade ourselves (she saw us struggling but didn't help us but she was old so maybe she couldn't?) - sides were lukewarm and over-salted - fried chicken was not cooked to order, so the skin was soggy by the time we got it - cornbread was hard and dry overall, it was okay not great read more

I think this place was just over-hyped for me. The fried chicken was just okay, and the sides were not that great and didn't taste very fresh. Also, the corn bread was super dry and completely tasteless. Athens has much better fried chicken places, so I won't be coming back here again. read more

Looking for the REAL scoop on Weaver d's well you've got it right here: Weaver D is very nice and funny with sayings like..."Communication" and "Automatic." Can be very expensive if you don't get the poor man's special which is chicken and gravy ($5) and pork chops and gravy ($6, $7 for two) PS - He usually doesn't announce it so ask. I've eaten almost everything he serves: Tea: Nasty...not sweet at all (Northerners will like it) Lemonade: It is made from the mix not real lemons BBQ Pork: looks good but you don't get enough so I haven't tasted it Ox Tails: I haven't tried it...served on Friday around 12pm Chicken: Some of the best (at least in Athens) Pork Chops: Great Fish (Whiting, Catfish, sometimes Tilapia): Great Meatloaf: Ok...I've had better Chicken and Gravy: Made with day old chicken smothered in gravy Pork Chops and Gravy: Made with day old chops smothered in gravy (They are still good and a lot cheaper, served over rice) Buttered Potatoes: Good, seasoned with salt and pepper (butter) Sweet Potato: It's simply amazing...he adds a lot of sugar Collards: I love collards and his just aren't good (fatback seasoned) Mac and Cheese: Ok...I've certainly had better (mixed type) Squash Casserole: Good Dressing: Great served with gravy and cranberry sauce (Thurs and Fri) Green Beans: It's hard to mess that up Fried Green Beans: They are surprisingly very good (new item May '10) Fried Okra: Same as anywhere else (Pre-breaded and fried) Cabbage: Ok...Good but I've had better Fried Corn (not deep fried): Good, he adds sugar Fried Green Tomatos: Ok...it's rare he serves it Field Peas: Good Cakes: He serves pieces of cake for $3.75 which way to expensive but people still buy them. Overall it's good food. I've found that most african american people like it but don't think it's out of the world because many grew up eating this type of food. However, my white friends think it's to die for because some of them have never had soul food, at least not cooked like this. The major draw back is that it is TOO EXPENSIVE aside from the specials mentioned above. For the price of a meat and two at Weaver d's you can eat buffet somewhere else. The great thing is that the food is already cooked and you can sit and eat it or take it home. Since I've moved to Athens I've noticed it lacks Soul Food buffet other than "Food for the Soul" where you can get all you can eat for $9 which is still under what you will probably pay for a meat and two at Weaver d's. read more

soooo disappointed by the service. and i grew up around little diner-type spots where someone named "Moms" ladles out the goodness. it's not that we expected to have linen napkins folded into sunsets or anything, but we first had to argue over the price (finally victorious only after literally pointing to the board where everything was listed), then we had to wait for our iced tea (no mas, por favor), and after all that, the food actually tasted . . . bad! Horrible! I had a very poor first experience here...first of all the owner and the lady in the kitchen were very rude and unfriendly. They rushed me through my order and would not answer questions that I had, mind you I was the only one there and it just opened for the day. The chicken was very tender, but didn't have much of a taste, I've had better at BBQ buffets. The Mac n cheese was decent but poorly made. Everything was just kind of thrown together, not much care or love went into their cooking. Matter of fact they both seemed miserable! I was really hoping to enjoy this place, I love supporting " Ma & Pa" restaurants...this was a complete flop. Weaver Ds is an Athens landmark for a reason. First, the bright green brick is hard to miss. Second, it's great to see the place that originated the phrase "automatic for the people." Third, Dexter has such a a strange conversation style, that its worth the experience, just trying to have a short conversation with the guy. Fourth, and perhaps most importantly, the food is very, very good! This is simple, southern cooking', greasy, sweet, and served on flimsy styrofoam. But it is tasty, tasty. I really like the fried chicken, the sweet potato casserole, and the sweet tea you serve yourself from the bucket. read more
