Waypoint may be a good shop for larger boats, but my experience with a small portable outboard was frustrating due to pricing transparency and communication. I brought in my 2012 9.8hp Tohatsu to get a quote on fixing a minor lower unit leak. The staff were polite and got back to me quickly. The repair quote came back at $780.90, which is actually more than the price of a brand-new lower unit ($687.99). When I declined the repair, I was then billed $346.02 just to prepare the quote. After I pointed out that an environmental fee shouldn't apply to a quote, the bill was reduced to $259.79. I was never verbally told there would be a minimum diagnostic charge to produce the quote. The shop labor rate is $235/hour, which is fine if that's their pricing structure -- but it would have been helpful to know that before dropping off a small portable outboard. I don't blame the technician, and I'm sure this shop does good work. But for small outboards this pricing structure doesn't really make sense, and the lack of clear communication upfront created a bad experience. If the shop had simply said on the phone or at drop-off that there is a 1-hour minimum diagnostic charge ($235+) to produce a quote, I could have made an informed decision and avoided the situation. If you have a small portable outboard, I recommend getting clear pricing over the phone. read more

I'm local and Waypoint Parts Department investigates parts I need, has a number of them on hand and dispenses with helpful information. Recent service went smoothly. They listened to my troubleshooting attempts, informed me RE stage of repair when I called, and amicably resolved dispute in service charge. I've learned to asked for their service procedures and inquire about types of diagnostic tools and techniques they'll use, so we're on the same page. Waypoint is listed as dealer for Tohatsu service and sales. Last week, I needed to repair the recoil starter on my Tohatsu 4hp outboard. The person at the desk told me that a new spring was $1.10 but they were out of stock. When I asked if they could install the new spring, he said there would be a $210 labor charge (for a 10 minute job). When I asked about a new recoil starter, he said that they were also out of stock and being manufactured so there would be a considerable delay. I ended up ordering a new recoil starter from Boats.net in Georgia. A new OEM starter was on my porch in two days at a considerably lower price than quoted by Waypoint. Fit and works perfectly. If I need any service on my outboard in the future, I will drive to Everett and use Cascade Marine in order to avoid Waypoint. read more

If you try to use these guys, prepare for a wild ride. Terrible service, responsiveness and just general decency. I am a yacht professional and I took a client's boat with 2017 twin Yamahas to get inspected. I've been selling boats for twelve years and engine inspections have never taken more than a day, more like hours. However, when I arrived they surprised me with the news that they would keep the boat for a "week or two". I complained and said they should have let me know and I would have taken it elsewhere; I should have just turned away right then and there. Finally they get the inspection done three days later, and two more days later when I call to see the status they ask me "oh, what did you want us to do with the oil samples?". They never mailed them. So another week later ---they still have the boat, can't answer why---and I drop in because no one answers the phone, ever, and the samples are sitting there in a box. "Oh, the lab we used shut down and they sent them back". No calls, it took me to drop in. Didn't trust them with the samples, I drove them personally down. Fast forward four days, I sent them the sample results, and days later, no report. It's been two weeks since the inspection, we don't have any report. It doesn't even stop there, once I called and asked we at was going on, as both buyers and sellers are anxious to get the sale done, and all I get from the boss is "oh all you brokers just want to get PAID.". Incredibly rude and insulting, as he doesn't know me and what I do to help my clients. I've gotten the same level of snark from several employees. When they finally did drop the boat in the water because by then we had wasted so much time we pretty much had to get it in so it could go to a yard that we'd been schedule for a month with, they didn't tell me if they could drop it in, just a maybe, and then didn't update me (again, no one answers the phone), and finally I drove down and there it was. I literally just drove off with it and made it to the next yard with minutes to spare. Bravo!! read more

We purchased our Avalon pontoon boat from Waypoint 4 years ago and are still in love with it! We used Waypoint's dry stack moorage for 2 years while we lived in Ballard, and though we now live on Lake Union and keep our boat there, we still use Waypoint for our servicing needs. We recently encountered an issue with our steering. Covid-19 shutdown has been causing parts to be back-ordered and initially it looked like it could be several weeks or a month before they could get the parts, but the service department went above and beyond to get creative and source the parts that we needed. We had our boat fixed (with upgraded steering!) and back on the water within days. Thank you Waypoint for always taking good care of us! read more

I bought a brand new Yamaha outboard through Waypoint Marine earlier in the year. It wouldn't start the first time I tried, so I took it in. They diagnosed that the carb was gummed up with old fuel, which clearly came from their test procedure, since I had never started the motor. They stated they never clear the fuel from the engine after their tests and that it was my fault for not starting the engine in the few months after I received it (it was winter + quarantine) -- even though there was no communication from them that there was stale fuel in the engine. They proceeded to charge me the full $578 to diagnose and repair this. A friend of mine had the same problem with a new Honda he bought from them. I consider it bad form to blame your customer and even worse to not stand behind your brand new products. I will not do business with them again. Update: After I contacted their CEO, Waypoint refunded the full price of the service. I have upgraded the review from 1 to 3 stars. read more

I was able to get the correct parts with my correct model identification. You guys made a simple mistake, we all have, but you didn't fix your mistake. You swept me under the carpet and told me to pick up my motor, which you charged me "only $200" as you put it instead. You go to a restaurant, order, get served wrong food, return food through no fault of your own, THEY DON'T ASK YOU TO LEAVE, AND IF YOU DO, THEY DON'T CHARGE YOU FOR THE FOOD ! My wife and I recently bought a boat from Waypoint marine group, we got an awesome deal on a beautiful Cobalt. We decided to keep the boat at Waypoint utilizing their dry stack storage. I have to say, the whole process was quick, easy and we were out on the water within just a couple days. To say this is a dream come true would be an understatement. The dry stack app makes getting the boat in and out of the water super easy and convenient. And now we're part of the Waypoint family, at least that's what it feels like; everyone working at Waypoint is just so nice, helpful and generous. I bought a Honda outboard engine here 2 years ago. This year while I was changing the oil at home the engine fell over and the handle and kill switch were damaged. I contacted Waypoint's service and part department and both were extremely helpful and courteous. After buying a new kill switch, the service department even installed it on the spot at no extra charge! read more

I advise taking your business elsewhere. I took my boat there for a simple inspection and tune-up. 2 months later finally got the boat back (after told it would be two weeks), and nearly had it towed in during the first voyage due to a broken throttle lever. After finally getting that fixed, I later checked the batteries and found one of the two was incapable of starting the engine. Unbelievable that an inspection didn't flag the poor battery. There are many other issues where they screwed up, and they basically did little right. The owner doesn't care, so there's no recourse. Truly a poorly run business that will rip you off. read more

Being in the market for a new pontoon boat I'm in the process of researching makes and models available in the Pacific NW. My research led me to Avalon a supposedly premier manufacturer of pontoon boats and Waypoint being the Seattle dealer. I liked what I saw in the on-line brochure and so I decided to initiate contact. However, and before making the 2 plus hour drive to do a hands-on personal assessment of Avalon quality, I thought I would call Waypoint to inquire into their current Avalon inventory, if any, because Waypoint did not list any Avalon boats on it's website under new boat inventory. The gentleman answering my call told me he THINKS they have a 27' and a 25' in stock, but wasn't sure. He DID NOT know which model/models and made no effort whatsoever to find out what they really were. Question, so if they really have two models in stock, why are not shown on the current inventory page? He did tell me they had just purchased the business from the previous owner, Tom's Boat Works and are trying to get up to speed. Well, as a prospective buyer, I was extremely disappointed in the complete lack of follow-thru and genuine interest in making a sell. Like, "let me find out and I'll call you back". Further, and even though Avalon is shown on Waypoint's "boat brand" page, Avalon is not included in the list of manufactures at the bottom of the home page, thereby leaving the impression Avalon is not a brand they are fully representing. Plus, Avalon still shows Tom's Boat Work and their contact info, not Waypoint. IMO ensuring the accuracy of the authorized dealers shown on Avalon's website is Waypoint's responsibility, another example of lack of follow-thru. So when I add up all these points, why would I consider spending so much money on an Avalon when they can't get these "simple" things right? Of course, if they can't get these right, then what about warranty work and servicing? No thanks. I'll look at other brands. read more

This place is awful! The boat we received started SINKING in the middle of Lake Washington. The customer service is the worst I have ever experienced. Not only did it take them over an hour and a half to get us on the water, they failed to make sure their boat was in adequate condition and most importantly SAFE. We were placed in a life or death situation and have the 911 call to prove it. Some of our passengers were stranded in the middle of the lake for nearly 30 min while they waited for police. The rest of the crew got banged up trying to tie the sinking boat to a private dock. What's worse is that this is NOT the first time a Waypoint boat has sunk. Do NOT rent from these guys, they do not know what they're doing, nor do they care. read more

I took my boat in for service. Lower unit lub, oil change, new spark plugs new impeller and thermostat. This all took 6 hours at first they were going to charge 9 hours. 2 weeks later I was done, over $1,600.00. Then they said I also need some belts, tighteners, etc etc. We have them on order let me check if they are in. They had not been ordered. They claimed I also had bad gas. They claimed that needed to be pumped out. They were coming up with a problem a minute. I got in to boat to bring it home and someone had tripped a circuit breaker so nothing but the engines worked. They did find the breaker and fix that so I could come home after I came back and complained. Of course it is because I need a new breaker. By the time they were done, I got to the point of not believing anything they were saying. I have 100 hp Yamaha out boards. I asked at a fuel dock and they suggested going to Edmonds and Jacobson marine. read more

We have kept our boat at Waypoint for the past year, and have appreciated the dry docking as well as the availability of mechanics and techs to work on our boat. We use out boat a lot and have never had an issue with getting it put in the water when we are ready to go. The marina is right by the locks, so it's very convenient for boating in both the lakes and the Sound! We have needed a lot of work done to our boat (motors, thru hull replacements, detailing, electrical, etc), and although the process has not been issue free, Waypoint has been able to address all of those issues. Over the past year there has been major communication and follow through problems (as seen in previous reviews) that were incredibly frustrating. We actually were at the point of looking for another marina, and repeatedly shared our concerns. I felt like I wasn't getting honest responses from the customer service woman, and our lack of trust in the work that was getting done grew. Jake, the service manager, heard our concerns and has taken the past 4 months to make it right. We are not done with sorting out the issues, but I trust that it will get done and finally feel heard about the struggles we have had. Thanks, Jake! I have a small 20-foot sailboat down at Shilshole, and my Honda 8hp outboard began acting up a few months ago. It would overheat for no apparent reason (as in, cooling system seemed perfectly functional), and it reached the point where we couldn't leave the dock because it overheated within minutes and just pooped out. I knew it needed maintenance and possibly a real repair. I called Waypoint and they said if I could bring the outboard to them, they could take a look at it. It was a major hassle getting the outboard off, disconnecting transmission cables, battery wires, etc. But we got it there, got it fixed, and brought it back. Unfortunately, once we got it all hooked back up and were ready to go sailing with friends, we turned it on, and it overheated and died two minutes later. Now here's where I thought everything was going to go downhill. I envisioned the hassle of trying to get the outboard off the boat again, I envisioned asking them to down to the boat and having them fight me on it, I just envisioned that it would all be a complete and total headache. Today I got up and went down there to tell them the outboard wasn't working after all their repairs, and instead of a headache, here's what I got: Brendan listened to my account of what happened and immediately said, "Is there someone at the boat now? Can I send someone to take a look?" I replied that I was free today and could go to the boat, and within five minutes he had a very friendly guy from the shop meet me at my boat. He was able to find that a hose connection just hadn't gotten put on tight enough. He apologized for them missing that, and then we started up the engine and it worked like a dream. No overheating. We chatted while we tested the engine. He answered a few random other engine/boating questions I had and gave me some good information on a future project I want to do. A couple hours after I got home I had a nice call from Brendan, asking if I was happy with how the engine was working and if I had any other questions or needed anything else. He apologized again for them accidentally not tightening that clamp tight enough. I've had surgical procedures where they seemed less concerned about my well-being afterward than Waypoint did after fixing my outboard. I am really happy with their customer service, I was so impressed that their first response was to come down and find out what happened, no hassle. Such a relief! And now we can finally go sailing again! read more

I dropped my inflatable boat off last weekend at another ship because it is not holding air and SURPIRSE...... the patches from Waypoint are leaking. So, the grand total to get nothing accomplished at Waypoint was $1900. The actual cost is $3800 because I had to have it ALL redone. Don't let this happen to you! I stored with Waypoint for 3 years and had them do service work. When the boat broke down, they tore it apart and didn't return to it for 2 weeks. The same thing happened the next year. Jake, the service manager concocted a story about trying to find a broken part. My ex wife recently gave them the boat to sell, it has been sitting for three months, no service, they emptied the boat, who knows where the contents are; damaged the upholstery, and refuse to release the vessel. In my opinion, the salesman, John, is conspiring with her to low ball the price, and profit the difference. read more
