Since our kids go to an elementary school with a no homework policy, we also wanted to build the daily practice of doing homework in preparation for the transition when they will eventually have school homework (because I've heard from parents how much of a struggle that is). We started because our oldest had an affinity for learning and he really wanted to read. We knew that it was time to put him in Kumon, because I used to work with hundreds of students of all age ranges and what I would see is a lack of a strong foundation in their math and reading. We knew that Kumon's structured learning curriculum and individualized lesson planning would ensure that our kids would have a strong foundation with no holes. We were right. Our oldest learned all his sounds, built phonemic awareness, and was reading books by the time he turned five years old. Now he's in 2nd grade and working three years above his grade level in math. He has gained strong mental math ability through his daily practice with Kumon, and it amazes us how quickly he can work with large numbers and process multiple steps in his head. Our youngest is completely different from his sibling. It takes him a lot longer to learn a new concept. And all of the teachers and tutors are highly qualified - Not just someone looking for a part time gig or side hustle.
