I was new in town and was checking this place out with a friend during Christmas and wow, an absolutely beautiful place. Watch out though, cause if you love anything artsy, you would most likely spend 30+ mins there just to browse around. Beautifully crafted candles, ceramics and diffusers. This place is pricey though - but great quality products

These are the candles I made, cranberry Cinnamon scent and cranberry color

Did a make your own candle session with my grand daughter. It was a lot of fun, Ryder from Waxman is very knowledgeable about candle making and I love the fact that this is a family business and they've been doing it for generations! They also sell their beautiful candles in the store to o, so don't forget to grab a few of those. If you do a candle making session, adds on the tapers so you can learn to dip them! You won't ever be sorry visiting this place.

This is a whimsical, hippie candle store not for the conservative or faint of heart. Waxman puts it all out there, from genre defining candles, gender identifying candles (check out my pic of the male/female molds), or just sweet little shapes or styles. I love how you can see their workshop from the front of the store--just makes it feel like an open studio setting. Also, the people who work here are just as hip as the candles (as it ought to be!) and nice smelling too :) I loved how Waxman sells plain candles too that are more affordable, but just as nice. Sure, it seems cliche to give candles as gifts (it's always that backup gift option for if you don't know what to give someone), but these would definitely make somebody happy (even if you don't know them).

WOW! What a neat shop. There is a little of (almost) everything in this downtown store. It is…read moredefinitely an artists mecca. The Phoenix Gallery offers unique offerings and interesting little oddities for everyone. They have everything from chip & dip bowls to earrings. This store has been around for awhile. I remember shopping at their former location when I first moved to Lawrence in 1991. I was just as mesmerized then as I am now. This store is so big, it is actually two levels. On this visit, I was so overwhelmed that I only visited the first level. I did not dare go upstairs because I knew there would be so many more temptations for me. There is everything from crafted rare wood bowls to dichroic glass. Everything is displayed very neatly and in an eye catching way. The proprietors have done a great job at showcasing the artists they support. The staff was very nice and helpful. They were patient while I asked my usual 1,000 questions and asked to see everything they had in the locked cases. lol. They were extremely kind. There is parking in front of the store, if you are lucky enough to get a space. That is the only downside to shopping downtown and that is finding a parking space. There is a new mobile app system the city is using for parking and it is convenient once you figure it out. Prices are very reasonable for these artistic pieces. I was surprised considering this store is in a high rent building and these pieces are handcrafted. If you want something out of the ordinary and one-of-a-kind... I highly recommend the Phoenix Gallery. It's like a real live Etsy store but better!

It is a wonderful gift shop as well as gallery. There's a lot of unexpected finds to be had.read more

I do want to mention that I came within an hour of closing and I have never felt more welcome to take my time and look around. Amber did a great job of telling me about all the bogo deals, new scents and did her best to help me find something similar to Leaves" since it's a seasonal scent): The display at this store is unmatched! From the Fairytale/Princess theme as soon as you walk in the door, the Men's shop, wellness corner, candle wallwallflowers and hand soaps throughout the store. Everything is well organized and easy to see. I feel like no bath & body works location is the same, could be that they're locally owned or franchised independently? Not entirely sure, but this location never disappoints or misses the mark on advertising. The coupons and free gifts definitely lure me in here, but the new scents to smell and the hunt for my favorites (if they're even in stock) always make it easy to spend an extra 30 minutes in here buying 3 to get 3 free. I see what you are doing here Bath & Body which is why I do my best to wait for the Semi-Annual sale(:

However, under the definition of Bait-and-Switch there should be a picture of this store. They have outstanding sales and they rely on volume. Lots and lots of volume. Again, I should know. I am at this store a lot. Did I say "volume"? lol. I have had to locate items myself on a few occasions. The other day they were having a Buy 3, Get 3 free. I bought three items but it came within a gift set they had thrown together in a cellophane wrapper and tied with a ribbon. The item was priced as if I purchased the three items separately. They refused, however, to allow me the BOGO. The store in Lawrence is small. It is difficult to get around sometimes because of the size. The aisles are not large and during their heavy shopping times, navigating this store is very difficult. They renovated a few years ago but, dang, they did not make this place any bigger. The service from the staff is inconsistent. I have had AMAZING service here and I have had non-existent service here. More than once I have entered the store and no one has said one word of greeting to me but they will greet the person that comes into the store next. Kinda hurts my feelings. I do not look like a sorority girl. I am not blonde, blue eyed and I don't carry a Michael Kors bag. I have noticed that those customers get more attention at times but, perhaps, it is my imagination. Other times, I am treated like the Belle of the Ball. For the most part, the customer service is great. They constantly change their product line, save for a few staples. This allows for new fragrances and items to pique your interest. The downside is that if you find a scent you love, be prepared to never find it again. I understand that from a marketing perspective but it does get frustrating. I have no problems with the products and use them everyday. The scented hand sanitizers are my favorite. The prices are good and you do get some great bargains here. Buy three and get three free? You cannot beat that price anywhere. The only thing I want from them is more consistent customer service. Otherwise, great place to get your girly on.

What a fun shop! I…read morewas in some sort of dopamine overload in here. Pens... notepads... stickers... oh, my! What a spot to land in KS. The prices are what you would expect at any stationary store but the selection is huge! I couldn't even take everything in. I know there was a sticker that said something about being overstimulated and it applied. I need to go back when I have unlimited time to explore. I left with several pens, a couple of small notepads, and some stickers! If you need anything in this realm, this is the place to go in Lawrence. Right in the 800 block of Massachusetts which seems to be the street for shopping in Lawrence. Not only are the products and the staff amazing, but there's 2 gems at this shop you won't find anywhere else - Dave is the bomb, and the haunted bathroom experience is as well. I'm just letting you know to go and experience them. No way I am spoiling it even though I'm sure someone will! lol It won't be me! Love this local gem in Lawrence!

Well, actually it is, because it's full of cool stuff. Think gift shop + art shop + boutique curio, and maybe that *starts* to describe the space. There are plenty of keepsakes, art supplies, and gift ideas that will run your tab up very quickly. It's all good stuff, mind you, but it's almost like they should have an "I'll take one of everything package". The front of the store is mostly boutique-ish and has a small up and downstairs. You can find gifts for just about anyone, and this is the kind of place where you can stuff stockings or get something unique for that special someone. If you need ideas, then ask one of the staff who are always willing to help. If you need specifics in the art department, then there is a station in the back to help you with various items such as paper types or other supplies. The unique nature of some of the items leads to perhaps some higher prices, but the value is spot on. You're finding gifts, not clipping coupons, so enjoy and shop a little. For everything that you think might be marked a little high, just remind yourself that you probably aren't going to find that in very many other places. And that's the fun of shopping: just browsing when you have the time and maybe the resources, looking at things that you didn't know you were going to find, and in this case, helping a great small business thrive.

I like looking at the collections, but I manage to stay away from them. If you want Jayhawk of any kind: material, cross stitch patterns, anything, they have it. But, other than that, they are quite small. The quilt shop area is kind of cool, again, great for people who do quilting, and live in Lawrence. Jayhawk fabric is hard to find elsewhere. I have alot of it in my stash, thanks to this store. As for other cross stitch items, kind of basic supplies I can get in Missouri. But, when I participate in the cross stitch shop hop,I always pick up a Lawrence, KU or Jayhawk pattern or fabric of some kind. It sits on Mass. Street, up the street from the Yarn Barn. We're basically talking twins here except for the needlework section in the back of shop here at Stitch On. Crafted collectibles include Department 56 and Byer's Choice. You'll also find a large selection of Vera Bradley purses and bags to throw your crap in. For the decorator, its a paradise of holiday items to "festivus" your home. (C'mon you Seinfeld freaks!) I'd say the shop's greatest asset was the service. Her involvement and conversation over frankensteins and draculas had me grinning from ear to ear.
