In a world where it's easiest to buy toys on Amazon or while window shopping at Target, meandering through the aisles of an actual in real life toy store feels luxurious and like a trip back in time. The aptly named "Toy Store" in Lawrence, really captures that sense of childhood magic that anyone born before the era of online shopping will appreciate. I'm not sure how many folks who read this review will remember the magic of walking into an FAO Schwartz as a kiddo, and I won't say this place quite captures THAT sense of magic, but it's about as close as you're going to get these days. This place has it all, aisles of legos, playmobil, a book section, and more. The added benefit is that when shopping here you get to support local instead of a mega corporation where most of us get toys from. If you are on the hunt for the kiddo in your life this holiday season do yourself a favor and stop by this place if you're in town. It's definitely worth a visit! read more

Really fun toy store on Mass St. It is large, 3 levels, and each one is packed with a bunch of stuff. The train section was probably my favorite, followed by the legos, but the entire store deserves a look. In addition to the toy sections The Toy Store also has a ton of classic toys and games, plus a great board game selection. In addition to just having a ton of toys The Toy Store also carries books, which is fantastic. More toy stores should carry books. There is also a STEM section which I loved. They have a ton of science kits. Customer service was great, the employees were friendly, and when we were finally ready to buy they got us in and out very quickly. As the internet has significantly wounded shopping in public and brick and mortar stores close regularly, it's fantastic to have a place like The Toy Store to visit. This might be the best toy store I've been to. It's huge and has everything. It has three levels of fantastic items! The store has entire sections of the store devoted to specific types of toys Section for board games section for children's books section for baby items section for trains section for playmobile section for k'nex section for scooters, wagonss, balance bikes, etc section for science toys section for stuffed animals section for outdoor games section for oragami entire room of sale items I love that this toy store has books. It seems like a great one stop shopping place for anything related to kids gifts. Smartest of all, the Toy Store has a registry type system for birthdays. Your child gets a basket, you walk around the store and he/she fills with basket with toys she'd like and then you put it on the birthday basket shelf with his/her name and birthday filled out on a card. You tell friends that he has a birthday basket at The Toy Store. Don't be deceived by the small storefront, because there are 3 levels to this traditional toy store. There's a pretty good selection of stuffed animals, Legos, games, outdoor toys, and random fun trinkets. There aren't a ton of the "new" toys from what I could tell, but I figure if you would go to Target or Walmart if that's what you were looking for. There will always be a hole in my heart for not experiencing this epic Toy Store when I was an actual kid. Luckily I can still channel my inner child, coupled with powerful waves of nostalgia that hit me every time I walk in here. This isn't some Wal-Mart kid's section of toys; these are the real deal, classic toys, including hundreds that you grew up with. There are toys for all ages and of all different stimulation levels (and noise levels, sorry parents). Aside from all the classics and incredible selection, what really puts this over the edge for me is the top-notch children's books portion upstairs. Growing up on great stories was key to my childhood and I'm so glad that actual books aren't obsolete lest we all stare at screens 16 hours a day. If you have kids and are anywhere near here, their natural homing device will lead them here with out without Yelp. Let me admit this, I do not have kids...and I absolutely LOVE this store. As an adult it is so much fun to go here and look around. You see toys that were around when you were a youngster, you get to re-engage the creative side of your brain and play with different toys they have out. I just love going here. I have bought a few toys for my nephew here, they have an awesome selection of toy trains and train items which is his favorite. If you are a Lego builder this is your dream store, unless you go to NYC or Chicago and go the actual Lego store :). I don't think their prices are outrageous. This is another independent Lawrence merchant who works hard to give shoppers something other than the predictable Toys R Us inventory. Collectible toys, Eurotoys, quirky stocking stuffers and Easter basket ingredients -- you'll find them at the Toy Store. The new location isn't as much fun as the old place, where stairs and little walled-off nooks made the store seem like a big people's playground. So happy that we discovered this cute toy store located in Lawrence on the lovely, historical Massachusetts Street. What a delight to see a wide selection of the classic old-school toys that made me very nostalgic reintroducing them to my young daughter. Another favorite section of ours were the STEM science and discovery toy section where we found a lot of neat science kits my daughter could try at home. Definitely a fun and unique store to browse and shop through than your standard Toys R' Us or toy section at Target or Walmart whether you have kids or not. We will be back! read more

Wow, this is the cleanest toy store I have ever entered! Really, it was kind of freaky how tidy this store was--I mean kids come in here right? The selection was quite nice, offering a lot of old fashioned toys (meaning not made in China = less or a chance of lead poisoning). They also, and more importantly, have a nice, small, collection of bouncy balls. A tad expensive, but quality choices--including a big one (about the size of a grapefruit) that had sparkles in it! Also a puzzle fan, and they had a whole wall ranging from toddler to expert. And plenty of "dream" toys were on display, including cars, planes and loved the educational toy section. I can't wait to spoil my kid with creative toys that teach, as well as are fun (I know, what every parent wants). The Toy Store will be a great spot to bring my daughter when she's old enough to know what she likes. read more

We took my son here for his birthday to pick out some presents. Everything is marked up around 40%. We bought a nerf gun for $40 that was $22 at Target. A Lego set for $179.99 that was $129 at Target, another Lego set for $79.99 that was $49.99 at Target, A Pokémon card set that was $49.99 that is $24.99 evRey where else, the list goes on. We spent around $500 when we should've spent closer to $275. I am totally fine with the $10 markup that they used to do. But what we were charged was insane. We have been loyal customers for years, spending thousands of dollars here, but after this, we won't go back. I understand that inflation is happening, but this mark up is beyond inflation, it's greed. read more

Conveniently located on Massachusetts in downtown, The Toy Store has three floors chock full of books, art supplies, stuffed animals, trains, doll houses, legos, and of course - toys. There are also plenty of clever cards and a jelly belly station near the cash register. Tons of kids and adults were in the store, but t wasn't chaotic. This store is huge! Plenty of nooks and crannies to cozy up with a book or play with a few toys. Be sure to keep a close eye on little ones since there are a couple of staircases. I was impressed by the wide variety of stuffed animals in particular. There are plenty of classic toys like legos, crayola art supplies, Sophie giraffe, Star Wars everything- and also some more niche brands. This local business is a downtown treasure. The staff is friendly and helpful, the selection on toys and games is great. I especially love the large selection of educational/ science/tech toys that are appropriate for a wide range of ages. The prices for these toys are in line with other high-end stores, and the prices for the less technical toys seem surprisingly reasonable (without kiddos of my own, I only shop for nephew and friends' kids gifts, but I was pleased with what I could purchase in my price range). The book selection and stuffed animal menagerie is also very nice. I really appreciate the open areas of building blocks and hands on toys for children and the amazing leggo building contest that they host each year. The building holds a sense of community with events all the time from LEGO building contests being only the most prominent example. The front display is always beautiful and meticulously created.
