Waveform Studio is amazing!!!! They charge $20 an hour for studio photography (how is that possible???) The place is clean, well equipped with lighting, backgrounds, places to sit, and about any accessory you need for a studio shoot. Just add a model and photographer with a camera and you're good to go! The staff is very helpful and even came in beforehand to ask if we needed any tech support Or anything. Such good service! One thing unique is that it's also a studio where musicians can practice on the weekends. I loved the ambient music and drums in the background but just a head up for anyone sensitive. UPDATE here's the story and why indeed is about ethics... I reserved the space 2 or 3 days ahead the date to be used so 5 day cancelation policy was never possibly aplicable, then I emailed and called to reschedule the very next day in the morning, Sean didn't respond to my calls until late night and he was upset already, yelling and emotionally exalted, very weird for the matter... he was telling me to blame on my photographer and that he knows better because he is been in business X years.... he charged me $50 and hanged up on me. I'm a business owner and I would never treat my customers that way, particularly a returning customer, it didn't feel right to me. My 3 star review is for the place which to be objective is great. ORIGINAL was my favorite photography studio place, but owner Sean has a very bad attitude. After him hanging up on me saying "good luck finding another studio". I absolutely love this place! What an absolute gem to have this business as a contribution to the creative scene in our city. I tell everyone I can about it. They deliberately keep prices low so as to not isolate actual artists, and to me that is incredible, considering the more opportunistic or capitalistic minds that this city is coming to attract. Tthe equipment and rooms are in glorious working order and besides it being the only pro level space for musicians north of downtown, the staff is extremely helpful and the have fantastic drum kits to play on for just $5! Every fifth booking is free, which is great as a repeat customer, which everyone will be once they check it out. read more

I did a 4 hour shoot at their photography studio yesterday (12/7/15). It's a compact, rectangular space with a makeup & changing area on one end and backdrops, furniture, and light fixtures on the other end. The staff that I worked with were extremely easy to work with, accommodating, and quick to respond (and especially when trying to organize a shoot, this was extremely helpful!). There was no one else at the studio at that time, so there was no trouble with drummers/bands in other rooms. It's affordably priced (I am a college student at this point so this is a must!), it's at an easily accessible location (just off of Lamar), and have lots of tools available for those who are seriously considering starting photography. UPDATE: 7/7/16 I was dividing up tickets to sell between my bandmates at the end of practice, and I guess I dropped one. They emailed me the very next day (which shows that they must be keeping up with cleanliness) asking if we had lost a ticket. And they had the presence of mind to ask us to confirm what show the ticket was for to make sure it was ours. Great facility read more

Was in town for a gig and these guys were near to where I was staying and so I could go in on short notice and practice on a nice set of drums, tuned really well, in a great sounding room. The cleanest rehearsal space I've ever been to, and the staff were super friendly. Best place to shed and rehearse in Austin. See you next time! read more

Be aware that this review comes from a commercial photographer based in New York City. This studio isn't made for commercial advertising, and because of that, you should understand it has limitations. However, you cannot beat the price of Waveform, and the staff is friendly. It is missing some pieces of gear, but they are reasonably accommodating when it comes to solving your problems. The noise from the surrounding music studios is substantially louder than I anticipated. I've been informed there are time slots during the week where this is not an issue. This may be my biggest complaint. If they could find a way to soundproof this, 5 stars. Oh, and pick up some flags. I would shoot here again. I would likely not hire this space to shoot an ad job, but it's great for test work or people just starting out with photography. Much cheaper than hiring a studio in Manhattan. read more

If you are a photographer who needs studio space for a shoot.....look no further. Waveform has done a great job putting together a PERFECT space to host your shoot. They have the lights, modifiers and backgrounds to get you going. I traveled in from Atlanta so I needed a studio for one of my clients photo sessions. This place was top notch: clean, accessible, stocked and functional. I shot during the day from 2-6 pm. I had the building to myself which created a nice quiet atmosphere for me and my client to work in. You can't be the prices either. Nice job Waveform! I'll definitely be back ;o) read more

The staff is friendly and helpful. Waveform has three separate and distinct rehearsal studios, each with its own characteristics. I used the middle tier, and was pleasantly surprised. Please be aware that all photo shoots are video'd by a camera placed high above the photo studio room in an inconspicuous spot and aimed directly at the space where a model is standing. This is not disclosed anywhere via signage or documents models are given (as acknowledged by the owner to me, NO notification whatsoever was present at the time of our shoot or at any one's previous to 5/23/14 but I'm told by the owner by phone that will immediately be posted - I hope it's done conspicuously and advise all to take note of it and point it out to your models so you are not a party to your model later discovering they were under unauthorized surveillance. Even with proper notification, many will not feel safe being video'd, period) . I only noticed it myself at the end of a shoot from a certain angle. Thusly, I would encourage anyone doing implied shoots, nude shoots, or any sort of shoot where you want your model to feel at ease to go elsewhere. I as a model have spoken with the owner about the uncomfortable and unsafe environment this creates and he confirmed the presence of the camera (supposedly there "because models are frequently crying on [his] doorstep because a photographer grabbed them") yet responded in a very immature and unprofessional manner. He is giving photographers a bad name by blaming their behavior as the need for this unauthorized surveillance. There was no empathy for what a professional model who conducts herself ethically would feel about this, and there continues to be none as you can see from his response below. I was told that no one else has noticed this. I hope this is rectified in the future so other models can feel safe. The fact that the camera is visibly pointed at the modeling area rather than doors or hallways makes the owner's claims about security pretty hard to believe. This all gives the photography industry as a whole a bad, seedy name and discourages models like me from wanting to trust photographers and those in the associated photography industry. UPDATE: Because of this review, the owner has now been sending me multiple threatening direct messages despite my repeat written requests to stop contacting me and clearly is not open to feedback despite signs posted in the facility soliciting Yelp reviews. Confirms my impressions of the seedy way he does business. There is NO legitimate reason for videotaping a private rental, just as no one would accept this in their hotel room even if the hotel felt it would help protect their property to do so. A purposely hidden camera pointed at a modeling area intentionally without disclosure is not a "security system". I will be happy to share the correspondence I have received to any parties interested in reviewing it before making their determination about private rental of this space. read more

Rates are very reasonable and the owner is a musician constantly seeking to improve the practice space for his customers. It's the new home for our five piece band. We take advantage of the super affordable on-site drums and have seen the place grow each time we visit during the few months we've practiced there. We used to practice at Music Lab but are very happy to now have this place in North Austin. read more

Can't say enough good things about this place. Haven't used the photo studio yet (but will soon), but the music rehearsal rooms are so top-notch that it injected a morale boost in the band after months of toiling in lesser-quality spaces around town. The engineer in the band (of course he's the drummer) couldn't stop talking about the design of the rooms, and the photographers in the band couldn't stop daydreaming about the possibilities of the photo space. The fact that they provide backend equipment for very affordable prices is a huge plus, not to mention the overall affordable rates. Great staff as well - very friendly and laid back. I had a membership in the drum room here for about four months while my band was between practice spaces. A membership like this is never going to be quite as convenient as having your own space, but I was very satisfied with Waveform. All of the staff members were friendly as can be, the equipment was in good working order, and the space is IMMACULATE. If you've ever been to a typical band practice space, you will be woefully unprepared for just how clean this place is. More praise for their staff- on a couple of occasions I left gear in the room by mistake, including a music stand that I've owned for more than twenty years, and each item was retrieved and saved for me by the attendant on duty. I have used the studio three times. My last shoot was in May. It was great using the studio. The music did not bother me as much as I expected. The staff on site is always helpful and knowledgeable. As of May, they incorporated a new light track setup that helped make a perfect white background. I was contemplating some ideas prior to my third shoot and the owner answered all of my questions. My band used this place as a practice space for several weeks. The first issue is that the band rehearsal rooms are not connected to the main air conditioning system, and instead have small portable units. This would be fine if the portable units were capable of cooling a room of that size, but they are not. The rooms are always hot, humid, and dark. It's so dark inside that we brought clip on reading lights to see our music. If you have a keyboardist, you'll need to bring your own stool or other seat of appropriate height. If you want to sit down while practicing, for example to mic up and acoustic guitar, you should also bring your own stool, as the provided stools are tall and very rickety. The second main issue with using Waveform as a rehearsal studio was customer service. We had the first slot available at 6:00 p.m., and the room was never ready on time. This would have been acceptable if the entire staff didn't kick us out at 5 till 8 p.m. (we paid for 2 hours) regardless of when we were let in. We were told "There is another band coming"- and while there was always another band, it is poor customer service that we never got our full allotment of time. The room was never ready at 6 - the air conditioner was not turned on, the bass amp we rented in advance from them was never in the room, and we were almost never let into the building before 6:05. There were a few exceptionally slow days where the staff took at least 20 minutes to get the bass amp into the room, which was 15 minutes we paid for and didn't get back. In summary, I can't recommend this as a practice space for bands. Rooms are dark, hot and humid, and the staff isn't friendly or prompt. For the same price, you can go to Guitar Center Studios, which has lights, chairs, amps, and friendly staff. read more
