I stopped here during my short sojourn at Friday Harbor yesterday. There are several arts and…read morecrafts-type places in town and in my limited experience, Island Studios had the best selection and at fairly reasonable prices. It's also a handsome place with their various pieces well displayed. I was particularly impressed with their glass wall pieces and some wood boxes by a person on Orcas Island by the name of River Jim. I also thought that the owner was very helpful, especially since I'll probably buy one of River Jim's boxes in the future. Jane Y.'s experience is unfortunate, although a sometimes high shipping/handling charge for often fragile and uniquely shaped artistic objects is more common than not. And it is certainly something I expect and factor into my purchasing decisions. I'm also usually suspicious of Yelp reviews from a profile with no picture and only one pointed posting. I call this a "drive by".

I go to a lot of museum exhibitions. I found SJIMA to present an exhibition that is better than any museum in Washington; better than SAM, better than Bainbridge, etc. I'm not sure what has changed; maybe staff is getting complacent, but the last two exhibitions have been incredibly disappointing. The current exhibition of Andy Eccleshall is flat, does not flow and the lighting is terrible. It really is a disservice to Eccleshall as his work is fantastic. The work in the glass room in front looks like a college student's exhibition. The volume of work in the small room is overwhelming and average at best. Again, something must have changed because the last two exhibitions are not up to what my expectations are for SJIMA. I will probably check out the next one but if it is at the level of the last two, I won't be wasting my time or money again.

Short of Vancouver, BC, this shop has the best quality and variety I have found. I have always been treated very well, even when my allowance was small.
