The Lucky Dumpster is a wonderful and wacky store full of original and repurposed quirky artwork and housewares. There is a particular emphasis on original pottery--mugs, cups, sculptures, etc.--generally featuring farm or zoo animals doing zany things. The quality of these seems to span from "very high" to "preschool," but the charm factor is off the charts for all of it. The fellow behind the counter, who I assume is the owner, is a total character who seems completely committed to and immersed in the store, and in the broader concept of repurposing stuff rather than landfilling it. He will make a custom button for you on the spot. (Speaking of buttons...they have buttons there made of avocado pits, which you can then sew onto your favorite garment that is lacking for buttons. Yes, they take repurposing seriously!) Cash or check only...I'm not entirely sure where the nearest ATM is but come prepared. And basically everything in town is within walking distance, so make the whole Bow-Edison a destination for a good day trip and check out this place along with its neighboring businesses.

Great small store with treasures you won't find anywhere. Focus on pottery, home items, jewelry. Nicely curated. Local artists are featured here which makes it special and meaningful. The owner makes his own bags by sewing old maps together. Nice touch. Awesome small town feel where trust (he had left the store open while zipping out to grab a coffee) and connection are made. Loved it. CASH only

Great day to invest in art 05/07/17.

I was recently in Anacortes and spotted a brand new (to me) thrift shop. So, of course, I had to…read morestop in! What a cute little place. They have pretty much everything - from kitchen items and clothes, to books, tools, art, and even some small furniture items. They also have a small vintage section full of glass and other decor items. Prices, in general, were a little on the high side - though I supposed that describes most stores these days. I started in the kitchen area, where I picked up a couple of knick knacks for my travel trailer. Then I headed to what was a pretty impressive tool section. Although most of the tools were in pretty rough shape, and on the electric items there was no indication as to whether they'd been tested or not. I also checked out the books and, of course, the surprisingly thorough sewing and craft section. I ended with a trip through the very large clothing section, where I also noticed they have quite a great selection of interesting artwork too. Checkout was kinda weird, as there were extra employees (or maybe they were just friends of employees?) hanging out at the cashier area gossiping. I actually had to sort of make my presence known, even though I was the only customer in the shop. It felt awkward, like I was interrupting a private conversation. Kinda weird! I'll probably stop back next time I'm in Anacortes, as it seems like the kind of place that's probably regularly getting some interesting items on their shelves. Maybe the cashier's chit-chatty friends will have gone home by then.

I finally had the chance to stop in since they opened recently. The inside was much bigger than how…read moreit looks outside. My niche is finding cute bags, shoes, and dresses- there wasn't much to rummage. That could be a good thing for some shops. I was greeted at the register, although there was either family friends of the family talking before I was seen.

It's about an hour and a half drive north of Seattle, into the beautiful pastoral area of the Skagit River Valley, and well worth that drive for a gallery opening or an artist talk. Smith & Vallee put a lot of emphasis on both paintings and sculpture, particularly from regional artists (and the Skagit Valley area happens to be loaded with great artists, presumably attracted to the great landscapes and light angles, and the arts-friendly communal atmosphere of Bow-Edison). A cozy, intimate gallery + talented local artists + a supportive community = really fun and well-attended gallery openings. It can get pretty packed, which might force you to rubberneck a bit in order to see some of the art, but people are generally kind and relaxed. If it's too crowded for your blood, walk around and check out some of the other neato little shops, restaurants or bars in town and then filter back after a bit. "Town," by the way, is more or less a couple of charming little blocks that look as if you're on the set of a movie.
