Pottery shopping with a hint of Alice in Wonderland meets Swiss family Robinson. Parking is up top and you walk down through a beautiful landscaped path that opens up into a pottery haven and as what I've noticed all over the island amazing sights. A treehouse is located to the left next to a wooden shed adorning more ceramic crafted goods. The wall of mugs is by far my favorite, a two tones handcrafted vessel to house coffee is the bees knees. The lawn showcases yard decor a plenty stuck in the ground so don't forget to look down. Picnic tables are everywhere displaying beautiful piece after beautiful piece. Following the treasure trove of tables to the back of the property you find cliff side views and what I can only assume is a rentable venue (if it's not it should be). There are two swings to leisurely take in the views and an enjoy a small beak from shopping. Don't forget to go inside the main house where room after room highlights different artists of the island and a bit of history of the establishment! read more

If your time is limited on Orcas Island, this pottery studio would be my #1 recommendation. The island is known for its creative community, with pottery leading the pack. They feature a number of local potters, each crafting pieces with their own flare. From spoon holders, to one-of-a-kind wall decor, you'll find the perfect ceramic and porcelain item to fit your style. I personally loved that the majority of the pieces were affordable. This pottery studio has items ranging from $6 to $1k. Most of the mugs cost ~$40 a piece, while you can find a plate or bowl for ~$30. I ended up taking home a spoon holder, Christmas tree ornament, and a plate for my favorite desk plant. The property is magical. There's chickens roaming the garden, a very intricate tree house, and three cabins filled with hundreds of handmade pottery pieces. All on an oceanfront bluff. Twenty years ago, when my husband and I got married, we had a custom, one-of-a-kind set of dinner plates, bowls, and more made for us by Sid, the incredibly talented owner. We originally ordered 16, knowing that over time, a few might break. After two decades of daily use, we were down to 11 dinner plates - and I reached out hoping it might be possible to recreate the same special pattern. Not only did they say yes, but they truly went above and beyond. With their new kiln and Sid's expert craftsmanship, they were able to create a beautiful new set of eight dinner plates that match the originals perfectly. My husband and I were visiting Orcas for our honeymoon. We knew we wanted to stop at this shop for some souvenirs, so we were happy to discover that they were open. It's an outdoor, mostly contactless (until you need to pay) venue. It's absolutely gorgeous with a tree house, beautiful flowers, and interesting little nooks and crannies where pottery is out on display. They have all kinds of items at various price points, including a clearance table. The art is made by many different artists, and there were a few signs to give information about the person who made the item. Since we had to fly home, we knew we had to pick out smaller pieces. My husband immediately knew that he wanted a coffee mug. He picked out one with a unique shape and an intricate blue glaze. I am much slower with decision making so I looked at everything TWICE before settling on TWO pieces. The one with a tapered top, I'm thinking of using to store my paint brushes. The other, I'm not sure yet, but I thought it was so beautiful I couldn't pass it up! The woman who rang us up packaged the items well, so we were able to get them home without any damage. Orcas Island Pottery is the oldest pottery studio in the Pacific Northwest and certainly one of the very best. If you have a few hours and want to get away from the crowds in Eastsound, make your way to this large, impressive compound up on the northeast side of the island where you'll find gardens and cottages full of lovely and impressive glazed and ceramic pottery. The grounds alone as well as the stunning view of President Channel and Waldron Island are worth the visit. Over the years we've purchased sets of dishes as well as variously sized bowls and cups and mugs. Their pottery is attractive and holds up nicely to everyday use. Since several artists work there they offer a variety of styles, and they're happy to ship pottery anywhere in the U.S. Even better, they don't charge Washington state sales tax to Oregon residents. I don't think a visit to Orcas Island is complete without stopping here. read more

Orcas Island Pottery is worth a stop on your way to or from East Sound. There is pottery made on site for sale in three small houses, and some pottery even comes in a series. That's not to say each piece isn't unique, it's just that you don't have to choose between a bowl or a cup. Or a platter. The options are plentiful and moderately priced. It's art but it's also art that you can use as well as put on display. There are also other types of pottery for sale inside the houses and outside. In the summer, the outside would be great for a private event or just to enjoy the scenery. Our visit coincided with icy weather and snowfall, but we still walked through the grounds and enjoyed the still water and the products. There is a small section with "imperfect" pieces on sale, too. The treehouse on the property is also a joy to climb up as an adult or a child. It's well-constructed and probably very popular in the summer! read more

More than 20 years ago we stumbled onto this gorgeous pottery experience. I call it an 'experience' because it's a beautiful setting and the pottery is placed all over. We splurged on 4 cereal/soup/stew bowls and a large salad/fruit/serving bowl, all with an electric blue glaze with grass green highlights. These bowls have brought me so much joy and pleasure! They always make homemade soup seem even more special. We have probably ten to fifteen other pottery bowls, pitchers, and mugs, and none holds a candle to these gems. One of these bowls slipped out of my hand a few years ago and broke and another has a crack in it--not bad after 23 years! I finally decided to call today and see about replacing them. Speaking with Annie was a pure delight. She reviewed the photos I texted and sent me comparable options. Though I was 3,000 miles away on the east coast, I almost felt like I was there! We went to Orcas Island Pottery on the way back to the Ferry. We had about 10 min only before they closed at 5pm. Lots of cool pottery. Who knew pottery was so popular on Orcas Island. They had 3 small buildings full of pottery, pottery on the walls, pottery in the garden in the back, pottery on picnic tables & the picnic seats. Nice fountains. They have the coolest tree house! The pottery here is NOT what you will find at Target or Pier 1...everything is SO beautiful & unique! I wanted lets just say, EVERYTHING! If you have a house and want new dishes, serving dishes, cups, etc this is definitely the place to buy beautiful new items! To get there you have to go through a tiny (very tiny and narrow) lane through what may look like the woods, but you end up at the house! 15 years ago, I had the great opportunity to visit Orcas Island Pottery. I loved everything I saw. I ended up buying an entire set of dinnerware. We have used it everyday for 15 years and there has been minimum cracking or breakage. We recently decided to add pieces to our collection as our family has grown. I called the owner, Syd, to see if I sent her a picture of our pattern if she could duplicate it and then send our dinnerware across the country? She was so accommodating and today we received our order. It was packaged beautifully and it is so exciting to have new pieces to our dinnerware. Warning!! They may LOSE YOUR CREDIT CARD INFORMATION and never apologize for it!!! My partner, parents, brother, and his significant other came here in the beginning of January. Beautiful pottery and we all bought something. My parents and brother bought their items and asked for the items to be shipped. My partner and I put in an order right after them. We gave them our address and credit card information because we asked for a custom order so they were going to charge us when the order was completed. The place was very quiet, maybe one or two other people there so it was not busy at all. My parents just recently got their order, SEVERAL months later because the pottery store chose to ship their items the cheapest way possible. My partner and I never got anything in the mail and when I called to inquire about our order they had no idea what I was talking about. They looked under our name and found nothing. I told them my parents information and they had their information but no record of our order. All of the employees said they had no recollection of my order even though my partner and I put an order in the same exact time as my family did, 4 other people! Seems odd that the employee would have no recollection of this. They LOST our credit card information and did not apologize or offer to compromise us for our trouble in any way. We had to cancel our credit card because of their carelessness. read more
