So much potential! Fortunately they did free Elizabeth River Ferry rides for Mother's Day wknd so that saved us $7 between the 2 of us, hopefully they do that once or twice a month moving forward. It's not an easy venue to rate with so much yet to be finished & so much already going on. For instance; we sat down at the Rocky Mountain Grill only to be informed their kitchen was yet to be open...I had to confirm that their name did have "grill" in it with the bartender. Got it, I'm hungry & you don't have food, moving on. A common thread is that almost every beer will cost you $6 unless you catch a happy hour deal. We walked outside to enjoy the weather as they were seemingly bipolar with whether or not they wanted to play music or the baseball game audio (ON BLAST!), unfortunately our timing coincided with the live music shutting down for the evening. We found a table to pop down at while we chatted, finished our drinks & sought out sustenance! We browsed The Market (high end food court?) & settled on Luk Fu for some Asian fusion ramen & poke. Unfortunately (unfortunately I'm using unfortunately a LOT while describing this experience) they were out of about half their menu! No avocado, no chkn potstickers, no spicy garlic sauce, no ramen!?! The no ramen was a shock as it had been quite a warm day we figured hot soup would be the last thing they'd run out of. Alas we circled back to the only place I've eaten at Waterside since they opened, the Blue Moon Taphouse. Success!! They had food!! We got an order of the 2 types of street tacos: nacho carnitas & fried Rockfish. They were both really good, I'd say the Rockfish was slightly over fried, but hunger won out & we cleaned our plates! If they can figure out how to not run out of food that will dictate the success of waterside. Oh, & even when there are tables readily available there still seems to be a permanent 45 minute wait minimum in place. Circling back to the Rocky Mountain Grill, I understand alcohol is your biggest profit margin, but you've gotta get that kitchen open! Lastly, it would be nice if they could get organized with clearing tables. Well we decided to come to the family movie night showing of the lion king. This revamped Waterside District is EXTREMELY improved compared to the old. Surrounded by great restaurants and even better night life opportunities, you can't go wrong at this spot. The best in Norfolk! Located directly on the harbor with great scenery looking over to Portsmouth it is a great spot to really enjoy a summer night. Every time I have gone there has been at least 4 live performances happening at once. There is a stage outside by the water for full-band performances as well as 3 acoustic stages inside throughout the open "mall" area. You can get anything here from fudge and ice cream, to a customized cocktail with your dinner at any of the incredible restaurants around. Depending on what your vibe is for the night you can be in a laid back environment with a beer and some acoustic music by the water or in an all out country club. The concept is like an upscale food court with live music, huge TV and drinking bars. There are many food places for you to order then you can sit anywhere in the district or patio but not in the closed in restaurants. There are many choices for food and alcohol, however, food is overpriced especially service is not really provided but alcohol was price reasonable. My friends and I were at Bluemoon restaurant at 8:30pm but they said they had to stop seating due to food orders backed up 2 and 1/2 hours. Wow. That's insane. So we had to pick other places to order food from. I don't see this place as a place for family with kids especially in the evening because it's very loud and crowded. I'm excited to see what this place has to offer! I did a quick run through and spotted some food joints I've never heard of and one that I didn't think would make it in there... One that makes food diapers that are wrapped in shiny foil. Maybe it's not a bad thing since that kind of food is mobile. The establishment is open and has plenty of space for a massive party! I've heard the news of live big name bands playing here soon. The area definitely needed this place. The old arrangement was a bit of a turd sammich with some of the places shutting down and others not surviving the test of time. It now has promise. We just have to make sure that the businesses behave, the locals don't get too rowdy (I noticed the place does have security guards so that's great), and that we bring awesome stuff there to showcase! read more

In my off and on time living in the Hampton Roads area (Virginia Beach) through the years Waterside has changed so much. This goes back to the days of Have a Nice Day café when MacCarthur Center was bustling with activity and the place to be. Excuse me the Waterside District but for those who have lived there and still live there it will forever be Waterside. It seems like the City of Norfolk says let's try this for a few years and see if it works out. The area has had its ups and downs with various businesses coming and going in the area. It is still a good place to catch a meal or drinks at various venues but it has also become more family friendly with the building of parks. There are many sites to take in within walking distance and even if you live here you will learn something new about the area. It is not just a tourist trap but a gathering place for all those who call Norfolk home. Norfolk I think has finally hit a winner this time on the use of this area. The only improvement if there was a regional metro system that was available but I know that is far off. read more

The waterside area was scenic and well-kept. There are walkways and plenty benches if you need to stop while exploring. I was looking for more shops inside the building with "touristy" items however I didn't see any. Plenty of restaurants and eateries to choose from. Our Airbnb was a couple blocks from this area so we walked down, no complaints but no hoorays either. Grabbed a few beers at the Bluemoon Taphouse outside bar and played table tennis. In general, the area is nice and clean as well as serves different types of food and beverages inside and out. Loving the harbor area where you can take a walk next to the many boats/yachts as well. 4 stars because service isn't the best when it gets somewhat crowded which is every weekend or holidays to be honest. I didn't go inside but we did park in the parking garage and walked through the walkway downstairs to street level. The MacArthur Center is just a block away, Nauticus museum is a just a short walk, and the Spirit of Norfolk ticket office is in the middle of everything. Great place to come and drink some good drinks. So much going on here. The service at the seperate places can be questionable. Overall I love waterside district. Some cool concerts and you just can't beat the view! Happy Hour during the week from 4-7 pm. They really only promote Thursdays for whatever reason. They have $1 slices at cogans (not even close to the quality of the original cogans) and $1 oysters at the oyster place. They have some big tvs in the main area of the complex too. It's crazy how much things have changed with this new revamp of Waterside. No longer some weird type of mall, it's a solid food and entertainment space. It's a great addition, especially with Town Point Park and the Main right next to it so it allows an extra flow of space for constant events. What's to enjoy... - There's all kinds of food and entertainment to enjoy under one roof. I love how you can come with a group of people and you can all get what food and drinks you want at different spots yet still eat together. - Speaking of food, there are so many options! I've enjoyed Blue Moon Taphouse, Guy Fieri's Smokehouse, The Fudgery, Rappahannock Oyster, Cogan's, etc. - I'm big fan of the shuffleboards inside the main area. Lots of fun and open to anyone to play. - It's a great place to watch a game with a big TV screen up front and more TVs throughout the place. - The outdoor area is great! There's corn hole, connect 4, ping pong tables, and outdoor bar area to enjoy. What could be better... - The parking situation, but that's Norfolk for you. There are garages in the area to park at and walk over. The prices are over the top, the ordering process confusing and the atmosphere is indeed airport terminal-esque. Not a fan! WOW! I LOVE THE NEW WATERSIDE! The Decor is AWESOME! The Entertainment is AMAZING! The scenery is SPECTACULAR! I mean this place is the old Waterside on STEROIDS! So many activities going on! Right next to Town Point Park is convenient if there is something going on there. You can enjoy a day in Downtown Norfolk! Parking garages are near by and don't cost that much $5. Keep in mind when parking you pay when you enter and you'll need exact change for the most part - this is normally on the weekends or doing special events. Widescreen TV's all over the place. The backside of all bars are concurent with other bar side seating is there and restaurants! There is a stage out back that has plenty of outdoor seating and live entertainment! The renaissance man wanted to go to the soft opening of the Waterside District. ( I had a flashback from the horrible opening not to far away from that location.) Some tips: Park your car at the Newtown Station and ride the Light Rail down. It is $1.75, exact change one way. Total $3.50 round trip. It runs until midnight on Fridays and Saturday, 9 pm on Sundays. Parking will cost you at least $5.00 at one of the parking garages. Get off at the MacArthur Square stop: Walk up two blocks on Atlantic Street and you are at the Waterside District. If there is a wait to get in there ( because of the fire code) walk around to the back side of the Waterside District, where the marina side is. You will get in faster when they allow people in If you want to eat in the Waterside District Marketplace, grab your drink first and then decide on your food. There is Star Hill in the middle of the space with lots of beers on tap. There is a wine bar called Vino that will have all the types of wine for your hearts desire. Your drink should set your taste buds for any type of food your drink will pair with. After you get your food finding a place to eat should be pretty straight forward unless there is a popular band or sporting event streaming on there many televisions. We were there to watch the Kentucky Derby. There is a awesome huge television on the side of Guy's Smokehouse, so that is where a lot of people want to sit. There is a lot of waterside people there to turn the tables ( it is when wait staff cleans the tables for the next guests could sit down) in that space. Our empty glasses and plates did not stay on the table more then a minute and half before they were swept away. (Great job! Waterside marketplace employees and they are so friendly) The average sit time for a place like that is when the guest's food is served is about 25 minutes before you get up. There is a reason for the high ceilings, the noise level and people walking around. Now you have the table holders ( the designated person to hold the table while the rest of the party is getting their food and drinks) it will take longer for that table to move. Now there is a corner next to Cogan's pizza where a bunch of tables are, you have the television from the Noodle Bar and can listen to the band that is playing. It is hidden from the main area. There might be another section like that by the Fudge shop but I did not look. That is always an option when the middle area is full. We ate salads from the Mix. It was really yummy. I created my own salad. Renaissance man had the garden salad. The employees were great. The toppings where right in front of you so you could pick them all out. Cogan's pizza was next, we had a Charcuterie board (It usually a cold cuts, cheese, maybe some fruit, nuts and maybe spreads or jam) and split a prosciutto sandwich. It was really tasty. There was this one girl at Cogan's keeping all the guys straight! Girl power! (We almost got the wrong sandwich if she did not double checked the ticket! Great job) There is something to be said for kindness in that kind of madness of a big crowd. The renaissance man was standing in line for a beer and saw that this person was getting ignored so called attention to him while ordering his beer. The man paid for his beer. Thank you! Me and 8 other friends went here yesterday night to celebrate my friends birthday. I've came here a few times and never had any issues but last night my friend lost her phone so we were looking for it we went to the restroom to see if it was there. And then we asked the bartender and he had it,(the bartenders also said it was fine for us to wait there ) so we were just waiting for her to get it and this bouncer CHARLES starts screaming at me to get out, and I tell him, I'm going just waiting for her to grab the phone and then he proceeds to yell into my left ear GET THE FUCK OUT. And I tell him ok I understand I'm walking please calm down. KEEP in mind I'm wearing heels and I'm also 5ft 90 lbs he's like double my size and I can only walk so fast. He then pushes me I ask for his name and he tells me he says you don't need to know my name. (I don't get it until the very end by someone else). I also start talking to security about this whole situation and the only thing they said was that's his job to get people out.... I completely understand that but if the bartenders told me it was ok to wait why would he be so disrespectful and think he has a right to put his hands on me. I hope they can get it together. The venue is beautiful. The attitude of all the servers is absolutely horrific. I understand that it is busy and people get frustrated, unfortunately this is customer service. You need to make the experience great to succeed. This place will not if they do not provide a good experience. One bartender was quite nice and knowledgeable however the remainder of the staff was rude, impatient and had NO idea what was going on. We were told they didn't serve beers that were on the menu, then when they were presented with the menu the server magically brought the beverage. We waited for over an hour for sub par pizza that was still not correct, and in one breath we were told they had no tuna for a poke bowl and 5 min later someone had a tuna poke bowl. I really like the look of the new waterside building, and they have some nice sounding places to eat in the building, but there is NO WAY I will ever eat here again. The prices are just ridiculous. A soda is $3. Not for a cup with refills, but a CAN of soda is $3. There is no recycling anywhere in the building. All the glass beer bottles and aluminum cans go right in the garbage. Like toffee? SO EXCITED that this place is finally open! After several years of it being out of business and basically a ghost town, Norfolk finally decided it was time for something new. The excitement is real at Norfolk as they have their first "market" in downtown. Let's start off with the layout of the market, if you've ever been to Union Market in NoVA, it's almost similar but a little smaller and less restaurants. There are two levels, lower level is mostly where all the food kiosks and restaurants are. From what I've seen, they had Guy's Smokehouse, Rocky Mountain Grill, Blue Moon tap house, Luk Fu's, Cogan's North, PBR, VIN Wine Bar, Fudgery, The Locals, Harbor Club, The Mix, and a coffee kiosk. They are also adding another restaurant called Stripers, but I'm not sure when that'll open. The atmosphere of the place is pretty laid back and mostly for young professionals. It is confusing at first because I wasn't really sure how the whole ordering food and drinks worked. So basically, you'll just go to a kiosk and order your food and sit wherever you want inside waterside or around the venue. Some places are different for example at Rocky Mountain, if you want to order food you'll need to go up to the cash register and order there. Even though it looks like a sit down restaurant where you wait for your waiter/waitress, that's not how it works. That only applies when you want to order a drink. Once you've ordered your drink you are actually able to walk around with your drink as long as you're in or around the venue. I thought this place was pretty neat, but it is a small place with way too many people. So the improvements to the Waterside District are totally for the better. From what this place was to what it is now is a night and day change. I really like it down there now and hopefully it stays in as good a shape as it is now. There are plenty of restaurants and places to grab a drink. I have had beers at the Bluemoon Taphouse, at dinner at Guy's and hung out in PBR for a bit. Indoor foodcourt style place. There are a dozen or so restaurants to choose from. Some have bars you can sit at or sit in the middle of the court. Nice place to relax because everyone can go grab their own meal. There is a Blue Moon, an Asian fusion restaurant, a coffee shop, pizza, and a couple of other eats. This is the first time in about 15 years that I revisited Waterside. I grew up Norfolk and I must say that I was truly impressed with the renovations. We enjoyed every minute of our outing. Our bartenders and waitstaff were excellent. The food was good and drinks were great. The performance by Cheap Thrills was outstanding. We will definately be back! Just so sad that I now live at the oceanfront and it's so far away... lol read more
