Last weekend, I needed to shed some Fall/Winter fashions that are way big for me these days. I packed up a bag of goods and headed over to the location in Burbank first, since I needed to run some IKEA related errands. And SURPRISE!! That store is gone. Annoyed, I headed over to the Studio City location. Based on the labels, condition and aesthetic of the garments I was selling, I figured I'd go to Wasteland over Crossroads first because they would charge a lot more for the clothes, and that equates to more $$$ for me. I drive up at 5:50 on a Sunday and walk in. As usual, the three or four employees working there look miserable but hip, and they all completely ignore me. Not even a dispirited "hi". I set the giant bag full of really lovely designer clothes on the counter and ask an employee if there's a sign up list. "Oh. Yeah, we stop selling at six." Remembering that I actually set my clock slightly ahead in my car, I actually visualize my digital display reading 5:50 as I look at the sales girl. She's really lucky, actually, because instead of completely eating her babies and acting like a REAL b$tch, I took a deep breath. And I let her know that it's incredibly stupid of me to EVER set foot inside a Wasteland store, because all the times I have been in, no one has ever been helpful in any way. I may have also mentioned that Crossroads, right down Ventura, has never sold me a garment that has that "used" smell to it, as the one item I've purchased there in recent months does, even though it's a contemporary brand. Oh, and then I went to Crossroads, and they were really really nice to me. And I found a Marc Jacobs Stella bag for $50 and still get $70 in cash for the stuff I brought in. I bought a suede jacket here a couple weeks ago for $100. I wore the thing twice and it started ripping at the shoulders. I took it into my lady at the dry cleaners and she said they never should have sold it to me because it was super old and in terrible condition. Because of their no return/exchange policy, there goes 100 dollars down the drain and I'm upset that they sold such a piece of crap at a high price. I buy vintage all the time and this has never happened. Super bummed and will never shop here again. read more

What is it about people in the LA area who think they can act pretentious just because they dress edgier than you? Oh, those giant black rimmed nerd glasses look SO rad with your pink-striped hair and your American flag jacket with a torn shirt and scuzzy army boots. You're cool. I have to agree with other Yelpers, The folks who work at Wasteland think they are just too cool for school. Kind of a minus, but I try not to pay too much attention. I mean, bottom line is... you work retail. (No offense against NICE people who work retail) Anyway, I was very selective about which pieces of clothing to bring in to get rid of, and I almost couldn't believe the girl in the giant black rimmed glasses, American flag jacket and messy cut off jeans took every single item I brought. Here are the labels she took from me: Vince, BCBG Runway, and vintage Balenciaga. It didn't add up to much, but I was able to score three shirts and a hat, and only pay $16 after I used my credit (which was 35% of the total, and no, they don't give you 50% if you decide to use it in the store, it's 35%, period.) I like this Wasteland, but I don't think they carry uber designer high-end labels like the Melrose location does. They did have a bunch of cool sunglasses, accessories and shoes. Definitely worth a browse if you are shopping on Ventura. Buying starts at 12 pm each day, and on weekends there are people lined up in the back of the store to sell their stuff. Ok, I'm terrible - I walk my dog everyday and pass by this place all the time (no, I don't go in all the time - hehe), BUT the times I have gone in - I'm glad I did - I always find the coolest sh*t in here! They have excellent buyers (they are fashion knowledgable - good inventory of current & vintage finds), a cool staff (they love my doggie) and good shopping experience (clean, bright, and their merchandise window is creative). I loved their location on Melrose when I was younger, so I was ecstatic when they opened in my 'hood! read more

I guess I'd have to agree with the majority of the reviews here saying that the employees are kind of distant and have a somewhat snotty vibe when you walk in, but the way I see it, I'm shopping for clothes, not trying to make friends with the person behind the register. They've got a pretty good selection of clothes and the store is pretty well organized. It's kind of a hit-or-miss situation at Wasteland because you may walk in and find a buttload of things or walk out empty handed, but that's the way it usually is at these type of stores. You can find some great things priced between $10-$12 bucks and then you'll see something not so great priced at $95. It all depends on your preference and what you're in the market for. I'll be coming back here regularly especially since it's only a few minutes from my place. read more

Pretty much my favorite Wasteland. Its quite big and has a great overall selection of men's and women's clothing.They seem to have more designer than vintage stuff, which is fine by me. The staff is always nice and helpful, which is a humongous pus. Ample parking too. read more

One star for the excellent parking (plenty in the back & it's free). Besides that, there's nothing good about this place. Overpriced secondhand clothes and snotty employees. I can't afford what they're selling and they won't buy my stuff (I've tried multiple times) so it's pointless to go here! Plus, they left my clothes in a big pile for me to organize before taking it out to my car when they could've easily helped me... they weren't busy... First off, the staff at wasteland seem super douchey. They look like they belong in silverlake. Unlike Buffalo exachange, they never ask if I need help with anything, or if I'd like to get my stuff ready for a fitting room. Even though I go in to shop, not to make friends, it just makes it a better experience when the staff is friendly. With that being said, it's pretty pricey to be a "second hand store". I've seen worn out shirts for like $50 since it's "designer". PFFT. This is always my last resort, if I can't find anything at crossroads or buffalo. I must say, wasteland does have a funkier selection than most thrift stores, and it's clean with decent sized fitting rooms. I love how they have a vintage section. Free ample parking on the back is a huge plus. This store was a disappointment. Tons of items, some new some used. But, honestly, all overpriced. For example, an old faded men's tshirt that said Vegas, with cut sleeves & cropped was $22. Are you kidding me? I could go to ANY thrift store, pay $1 for a ratty t-shirt and do the myself!! But, there are some cute items and many rack to rummage through. I just found it overpriced and I won't be back. There are much better options, but if you are in the area, check it out. I absolutely love the items in this store and the whole trendy/grunge/edgy/hipster/hoodrat vibe it has. I never go in without buying lots and lots of funky, unique, fashionable items. If you take your time to comb through the aisles you are bound to find lots of little treasures which are (mostly) well priced. I really love the selection at this store because the Urban Outfitters next door means people are bringing their almost new merchandise to Wasteland to be sold at a much lower price. HERE IS MY COMPLAINT: Many of the employees are kind, helpful, and usually witty. However, a few of them are the most unprofessional and unhelpful people I've EVER come in contact with. Cursing in front of children, not acknowledging your presence and they couldn't know less about the products. HORRIBLE. SO If you're looking for interesting new and vintage clothing: come to Wasteland. AND if you're looking for sometimes horrid customer service: come to Wasteland. read more

Sorry boys, this review is for the women's section only. Interesting place. A nice mix of vintage to designer used clothing. Most items are in very good condition. Clothes are priced reasonably and are not all cramped together like other second hand stores so it's easier to navigate. They have some items that have been revamped by Wasteland designers which is unique. This was the case with the Rebecca Taylor dress I picked up here for my cousins wedding... for $20! Considering similar Rebecca Taylor dresses run at around $300-500, I left Wastleland one very happy shopper that day. I only refrained from giving 5 stars due to the fact that service was.. meh. Not the best both times I visited. It is still worth the visit for the clothes though. read more

I ventured over to Wasteland the other day after hearing from a friend that they had a great selection of designer resale and vintage dresses. Generally, I find consignment stores to be rather lacking in this arena, but after shopping around for the last 3 months for the perfect dress to wear at my friend's wedding, I was desperate. Honestly, before I stepped inside I wasn't expecting much. I find consignment stores (especially in the Studio City area) like Buffalo Exchange and CrossRoads, to be really picked over and over priced. So imagine my surprise when I walk into Wasteland and found a wall length rack of cute and very different dresses stretching from the front to the rear of the store! I found 5 that I ended up trying on, all between $32 and $85. Not too shabby! The store is well kept and much cleaner and 'hipper' feeling than other consignment stores I've been too. It's also a bit larger, space wise, which helps with the aesthetic. Reminded me of a no-frills Urban Outfitters or Nordstrom Rack (though less crazy). Their assortment of clothing was pretty extensive and I found that many of the dresses were new with their original sales tags (or looked as though they'd only been worn once). Generally, the quality of the pieces was much better than other consignment shops I've been to. I walked out $48 later with the PERFECT dress unlike any I've ever seen. A criss-cross/sleeveless top with the body of the dress looking like a woven basket or a mermaid's tail. I promise it's better than I'm making it sound. And all very relevant, fashion wise. My dress is that seafoam/robin's egg blue color that's coming back around this season. And it's re-sale designer. I've never been a big label gal...But I must say, it is kind of exciting to have a piece of clothing with a fancy label attached (even if I'm the only one who sees it!). It's like owning a unique piece of art. And knowing that I got it for $48 makes me feel like I'm smarter than the dress' original owner who paid full price :) I'll be back for sure! I'm turnign 30 soon and I think THAT deserves a new dress as well. I'll start hunting next week! As far as parking, there's lots of metered street parking on Ventura. But if you can find a spot, there's a shared lot in the back (shared with CVS/Urban Outfitters/Pier 1, etc)...and it's free! read more

A friend recommended Wasteland after a rather mediocre and frustrating used clothing store experience in my area. Definitely check out their website before going to review the styles and brands of clothing they're buying. Yes, the website layout is slightly confusing and difficult to maneuver (the meet our staff section is quite amusing;p). They prefer current styles and trends, along with classic vintage pieces. Sellers have the option to receive 50% store credit or 35% cash in the form of a cheque. The store itself is well lit and kept very clean. The general fashion aesthetic seems to appeal to a younger, hip, very trend/fashion conscious crowd, which I thought was fab. I could really see the potential to score some wonderful items as most things appeared to be brand new or barely used. I take good care of my threads and made sure to thoroughly clean and press all items before visiting. Also, I'm a pretty serious fashionista, customizing looks from the runways from my fav designers into wearable looks for the casual Cali fashion climate. The buyer who assisted me was very professional with no hint of attitude, much unlike the previous used clothing store I had visited. She selected three pairs of jeans: Jbrand Lovestory, 18th amendment 70's highwaisted flares, and Joe's Jeans dark skinnies, some flowy tops, and a tribal dress. Not all items were designer, but they were contemporary and cute. I was very satisfied with the final amount I received for selling. I cannot say enough about Casey and her team at Wasteland Studio City. I am both a devoted shopper and seller and I really want to give this incredible business a huge shout out. I have scored some of the most amazing designer bags, shoes and jackets at pennies on the dollar. I want to give a special shout out to Andrew, Josh and Sonya who make my experience there even better. They greet you by name remember your taste and I have always been treated incredibly fairly when selling items to them. I feel so confident when selling, I leave my things and know they will always price them appropriately. I made over $700 this last month alone in two visits selling clothing. That's a lot of extra money in my pocket. If you are looking for great deals, knowledgeable sales people and a new better way to spruce up your wardrobe this is it. In reading some of the "negative" reviews, it makes me angry. Clothes do not hold their value. If you really understand retail, you would know that they are going to price things as the market bears. Many times they have passed on items and either told me to bring them back at a later date or explained to me why it may not do well in the store. I brought in some clothes to sell and the guy who was helping barely even looked at them before giving them back to saying "We're going to pass on these thanks". He was way too busy talking with his coworkers behind the counter, that was obviously more important than providing customer service. If none of my clothes are right for your store fine but at least pretend to give me the time of day, just a little bit. Maybe he sized me up and decided I wasn't worth buying from, I don't know. It's probably a crap shoot on who the person is looking at your clothes but the vibe of the staff in general was pretty pretentious. The staff here is very helpful, unlike the rude and disrespectful employees down the street at Crossroads. Don't bother going there and sell your goods somewhere like this--where they treat the buyer/seller well. Also, Crossroads smells (and looks) like a rundown Goodwill. Wasteland is pristine and contains clothing you'd actually want to buy. And I must say the guy that went through my clothes took extra care to fold the "undesirables" very nicely as he gave them back to me. :) Overall, a great experience. read more

Where is the value in consignment if you're ripped off? I can't believe I paid them more for someone's used shirt when it's still sold new in store for cheaper. I purchased two shirts last weekend- the first was a used shirt, and they sold it to me for $42 and labeled it as designer, when online the same shirt only costs $35 new from the store. The second used shirt they sold me was $18 and I find it multiple places online used for $12. I will not buy from them again without looking every item up beforehand, since they ripped me off. read more

I had SUPERB service today. I am a wardrobe stylist for a living so I am in clothing stores about five days a week. I know when people can and can not do, when they just choose not to and when they bend for ya. Today not only did Emmit bend and make a huge exception for me that I will not share because I don't want you all to wear him out. But I just want to let everyone know that he and the entire staff were very accommodating and super polite. I looked like a homeless person so I definitely did not expect to be treated like royalty the way I was today. Kudos to you all! read more

Have come here three times now. On occasion I find some good stuff. However, I have been here both to consign and to buy, all times they were more into chatting each other up and not very helpful. They take consignments only until 6 even though they are open much later. Because I'm moving I have a lot, a lot but I walked in at 6:03 and they said too late even though I was carrying a giant box. They were definitely still consigning because people were waiting in the consignment area. A customer (associates here don't think like this) was polite enough to get the door for me as I left. Wasteland: you should not be selling forever 21, you need better brands, better prices and a better attitude, my designer duds just went down the street. read more

I won't bother going in here again. The used clothing was over priced and in poor condition. A lot of the tops/sweaters I looked at were really pilly and stretched out. There was some vintage stuff that was interesting and I don't know the average pricing on vintage, so I can't comment on that. However, the contemporary brands were grossly overpriced. I picked up a vest and its tag said Forever 21. I looked at the price tag and it was $20. Come on. We all know that when the item was new it cost about that much at that store. Once someone else has worn it, and worn it out, it shouldn't cost the same amount. The new items were also super-overpriced. I looked at a sundress that cost $110 and then when I walked over to Urban Outfitters I saw the same exact garment for $50. It was absolutely ridiculous. Plus, as a lot of people have also written, the staff is not friendly at all. I'm not sure what happened here. This used to be one of my favorite places to shop and occasionally sell. But recently, they have moved away from (non-designer) vintage, at least according to one of their buyers. This is really disappointing. This has been the route that Buffalo started down a few years ago, which made shopping there kind of disappointing. There's little fun in sorting through racks and racks of new, poorly made stuff knocking off old designs. To be perfectly clear, I don't necessarily want to sort through racks of "typical" vintage, but in Wasteland's case, I always felt like they did a good job of stocking exceptional pieces, designer or otherwise. It seems limiting to shy away from anything that is visually striking, unusual but interesting, etc. Can't quite wrap my head around such a limitation, perhaps it was just misinformation from my last buyer, which brings me to... Selling here used to be a kind of bittersweet fun as it meant I was broke and parting with beloved items or sending them off to be replaced by something new. Always worth the trip over but for the last year now, I typically get the same buyer who doesn't look at my items, but rather, lifts one corner of the entire stack, psychically determines their fate as markdown rags before stuffing the carefully curated goods back into the bag. This is frustrating, to say the least. On the rare occasion that I get one of the longer-tenured, friendlier buyers, I usually leave with a 50-80% lighter bag. Pretty remarkable. As someone who's spent many years doing their job, I know better than to argue, ask for another buyer, nor am I deluding myself that my ten items are all can't-miss items, but this is the first time that I have ever seen a buyer NOT look at items during a buy and it happens each and every time with this one. As far as merchandise for purchase goes, well, without a regular intake of vintage, I'm not their target customer at this point and I am fully aware and accepting of that. I could care less about designer or modern in general. Give me vintage denim, chore, motorcycle club, native american, americana, etc but all I really see on the racks are items inspired by the goods that I actually want. Their bread and butter customer is probably thrilled to hit this place up. Unlike many of these other reviews, I have never encountered any rude staff, most have provided the right balance of noticing/acknowledging me, being available if needed but not up in my face the entire time. I always liked their level of service. Most of the staff I have talked to over the years have all been friendly and helpful, so no complaints there. Overall, the staff earn the stars, but until the moratorium on non-designer vintage is lifted, I'm kinda wedged out of this place. I'll still, warts and all, recommend this store over just about ANY Crossroads and their staffs of child laborers. read more

I had a couple of bags and particularly wanted to be in & out rather than going to their popular Melrose location...GREAT DECISION, as "John Cueto" the Store Manager/Buyer made my day! He helped me sell a majority of my clothes and was extremely hospitable and knowledgeable on a lot of higher end pieces I brought in, giving them great prices...I definitely will go out of my way to sell at this location in the future, especially because of the customer service read more

The items here are fine, if a bit pricier than they're truly worth. Lots of neat things to look through, and a very nice selection of shoes. However, the overall atmosphere of this place is unwelcoming, unfriendly, and conceited. Workers here are never forthcoming or particularly helpful, and I always feel as if I'm outsider trespassing on a private party. Sorry, am I not on the list? It's a shame, as the selection seems pretty solid to me, but I much prefer the friendliness of the Melrose location. The "vibe" of this place is so off, I avoid coming in when I go shopping on Ventura. read more
