I love the convenience of having local fruits and veggies delivered weekly. I don't get to the farmers' markets very often and most CSAs require pick-up, which I don't always have time for. I am currently receiving the large local box. I love the ability to skip a week when I am going out of town. I also like that I can add extra things to my regular box. They also have a build your own box which is nice when I have too many greens in the fridge but I still need some veggies. I just put "local" in the search box and I can find things that are nearby. I am definitely cooking and eating more veggies and I have discovered that I love dandelion greens! Occasionally something is missing, but they put more of something else in the box to make up for it. read more

ROTTEN FOOD, EXPIRED FOOD, MISSING FOOD. I used to love this service and recommended it to friends. Now every order has expired products or rotten products or several missing products which are checked off as being included. It has become more of a nuisance to order from them than it is worth, since I have to keep sending an email every week asking for refunds. (And when they send pantry items beyond their sell-by date they just ignore you and do not refund.) I do not know what happed to quality control in the summer of 2022, but I can no longer recommend this service. You would do better to shop at Whole Foods and have it delivered. read more

Purchased a gift certificate online for a friend and learned later the certificate was never sent to the recipient although I was charged. Emailed WGG multiple times over several weeks and only received an auto-response to call with urgent issues. However, calling goes straight to voicemail and does not allow you to leave messages, leaving me in a frustrating contact-less loop. Finally got a response when I emailed them that I planned to file a charge dispute with my credit card company, and was told to have the recipient email them when they wanted to use their gift certificate (...because they are clearly so prompt or available to respond to emails?). I requested a refund and have not heard back from them since. I am still working with my credit card to get the money they effectively stole back. I'm so disappointed because I was really looking forward to supporting this business and thought it would make a great gift for my friend, but now I'm $100 out and feeling scammed. read more

Convenient concept but they are not reliable at all and their customer service is bad. I stopped using their service when I got wrong items (I didn't make a big deal and just ate whatever they delivered) but I wanted to give it another shot. I ordered 10 yogurts, they charged my card for 10 and delivered only 2. I didn't receive any heads-up or notifications saying that they were low on stock. I reached out to them letting them know that some of the items were missing. Finally, they let me know they were out of stock and will give me store credits for the missing items so that I can order again next week (They only deliver on Thursday and mine was delayed and got my items on Friday instead). First of all, a normal business would've notified me that they don't have items that I ordered and communicated with me before sending a random amount of food. Why would you charge a customer's credit card if you can't accommodate the order? I dont understand how they can think I would be happy to come back and use "the credits" only to experience more frustrating service. For the other items I ordered, breads were stale due to the delivery delay and bananas were bruised. A huge waste on money and time. read more

I so wanted to love this service. This was our first experience with a CSA type service on the East coast. Decided to try it out since we're trying to limit our shopping outside the home due to COVID. We have ordered three boxes so far. The good: There are a lot of items beyond fruits and vegetables. I love that they have meat, fish, eggs, cheese, snacks and bakery items. You can get one of their weekly/biweekly boxes or build your own. The quality of the items have been mostly good. The delivery driver was nice. The bad: Consistent issues with delivery. The first week I was told it would come Thursday and it came Friday. Then last week they delivered the box to a completely different apartment building across town. (Thank you Aspen apts in NW DC for calling me). I decided to pick up the box myself (had to borrow a car) instead of having the delivery driver come back (he was already in MD) since I had no idea if some of the items were able to be refrigerated. Which brings me to the subject of refrigeration - my hard cooler with ice packs has been ready for meat/dairy items (as the website instructs), but is never used. Instead they "give" you insulated shopping bags with a frozen water bottle in it - which cost $5 each time. Sometimes the meat is frozen, sometimes not. Ordered chicken thighs in our second box, got it right off the truck and they were already off, had to throw them out. Our first order had chevre that had pink and brown mold in it when we got it. Now to items missing - There have been items that I've ordered and paid for, that haven't come in the box. every. damn. week. Double/triple checking this account is so annoying, especially since they don't. Make sure to email them to get credit back. Then they just put it as account credit instead of crediting your card back. The Weird -- Some of the pantry/grocery items are those you can find at whole foods, which makes the missing items and lack of substitutions so frustrating. The website is pretty glitchy. Be warned that whatever you put into your order (before the cut-off time which is two days before the delivery date, IF that really ends up being the delivery day, ugh), is what you get (or maybe not! See "the bad"). There is no final "submit" or confirmation email. There is nothing letting you know if some items are unavailable or if there will be substitutions. There's a phone number to call...but don't bother! It advises you to email and there is no option to leave a voicemail. I'm thankful they have been pretty responsive via email. Issues and lack of attention to detail at every level of this company (website, delivery, quality of food, customer service) make it really difficult to support. Based on a recommendation from a neighbor, I tried WGG's service in late March when CoVid was forcing us all to find different ways to obtain our groceries. The quality of products was very good and the delivery representative was personable. However....our order was delivered a day late and was incomplete. Neither the delivery person nor the office seemed to know it was incomplete until it was off-loaded from the van, nor did they give me any warning. I was left to calculate myself the cost of the undelivered items and to report to my credit card the credit due for an incomplete order. Now, four months later, I find a small, yet unexplained and unannounced charge - from Washington's Green Grocer - posted to my credit card. It's not the dollar amount but rather the disturbing discovery in July that WGG still has the ability to simply charge my credit card. For what...who knows?...since I can not get WGG to respond to multiple emails and phone calls asking for an explanation. So I've taken the only recourse left to me: I've alerted my credit card that this business is conducting unauthorized and unexplained transactions. Fortunately, my credit card stands behind me. I respect WGG was unprepared and overwhelmed for the explosive demand resulting from the pandemic. But not responding to emails, and putting through an unannounced charge months after a transaction, is unforgivable. I will not be back. read more

Boy oh boy was I excited to start getting WGG delivered to my doorstep. By the time the first delivery arrived on a Friday I'd spent all week planning out the recipes to use all of my fresh produce and emailing my dinner ideas to a good friend who had highly recommended WGG. My hopes were high and my dreams were filled with scrumptious pears and green beans and clementines. Then I actually received the box and all of my hopes were dashed and dreams were shattered. Week 1. Pears were missing. Emailed to report the issue and they gave me a $3 credit. If you're trying to determine the break out of price - that's $1 a pear and this was the small mixed (organic and conventional) box. Marie was very tactful and quick in her response which was appreciated. Week 2. Brussel sprouts were missing from the small organic box. Anyone who knows me well knows my affinity for Brussel sprouts so the fact that it had to be *that* item that was missing was not a good sign - not to mention this was the second week in a row that had an error. To rub salt in the situation they'd also given us one zucchini (whereas we'd get three apples, two cucumbers, etc). I emailed again, specifically asking if they'd just ran out of produce by Friday and suggesting that delivery on a different day might help alleviate this issue (DC gets Thursday and Friday deliveries, MD and VA also have set dates). Marie gave us another credit and said she'd make a note for the packers to double check our box. Weeks 3-4. Apparently the note worked and everything went well! Third time's a charm? I knew WGG could be as good as it seems! Skipped a week in here which is a great feature. So many CSAs you don't have the ability to just pay for the weeks you want. You can turn off a box before a certain time of day prior to your delivery or you can opt for on demand deliveries to pick the goodie boxes you want when you want them. Week 5. Received an item on my "never" list and did not receive an item I most certainly had wanted. Plus inconsistency in serving sizes again reared its ugly head when we received just one grapefruit. At this point I was looking at a 60 percent error rate, sent another email and explicitly requested delivery for Thursdays. Zeke --the owner-- responded this time and was very nice. He explained some of their rational with the number of fruits/vegetables, credited that month's entire box and did switch my delivery day. He even left his contact information (other than the email address no contact info is available online or none was included in the previous email correspondence). We tried again but found that continuing to receive the boxes just wasn't worth it. Of course you have to pay extra for delivery/convenience but the amount they're marking it up if you only get one grapefruit or one avocado just isn't worth the price. The fact that most of the boxes are a bit redundant (there's always a head of lettuce, four bananas, etc in a small box) also made me long for more variety. Plus, I think the reuse of boxes also means that any bit of mold that may have been on a piece of produce is more likely to end up on the box and then on other produce for the next week's customer. We're still "on demand" in case we ever want to try it out again and maybe there will be more variety during the summer, but having received a moldy orange in cold weather, I think the chances of us using the service in hot weather are pretty slim. I will give credit where credit is due though. The second star is for the concept and flexibility in turning deliveries off/on and the exceptional customer service. It might be worth a try if you eat a lot of produce and are really flexible (i.e., DGAF) regarding what you get for the price...it's just too bad that in this situation I'd rather receive the produce than the customer service if I had to pick one. read more

I hate to be the one to break the string of five-star reviews, but Yelp failed me here. Washington's Green Grocer is not terrible. The vegetables they deliver you are fresh, and the prices aren't terrible. Delivery is reliable too. But this is no substitute for a decent CSA, let alone a good farmers' market. At times when my local farmers market is overflowing with delicious, local, produce (heirloom tomatoes! spring onions! etc.), WGG carries very little of it. Much of the produce is packaged and comes from far away. Even when they do have special, local, items (like garlic scapes) you have to buy them separately; they don't come as part of the package of supposedly special, local, vegetables. I would be happy to accept a pretty much random assortment of vegetables of the quality that they have at my local farmers market during the summer. But this is nowhere near that. I love vegetables too much to regularly use Washington's Green Grocer. if you know what you are signing up for, this service is perfectly adequate. It is roughly equivalent to having a friend go to your local supermarket and purchase a relatively boring mixture of common vegetables. As a delivery service substituting for a grocery store, it is pretty good. As a substitute for real, fresh, local, vegetables-- I just don't see it. read more

I have been a GG customer for years. Their service could be frustrating -- missing items, out of stock etc. But for the most part the food was exceptional and allowed our family to try vegetables we'd never had before. The company changed hands and that changed too. Even before Covid there were more missing items than with the previous company and more out of stock items. I didn't check -- but knowing what I know now -- I should have - but I thought I was being credited. Since covid the service has worsened considerably. While other small businesses are suffering they are blowing their opportunity to thrive. They are ignoring contemporaneous emails listing items they charged for but didn't deliver. I have sent at least four emails asking for credit and they have neither credited me OR replied. And now they aren't answering their phone, telling customers they can only be reached by email. During a time when people are worried about their salaries they are, in essence, stealing from us. I intend to file a complaint with the state AG and hope others will too. That and not using them is the only way to send a message to this company that they should not be in business. A better, more reliable, responsible service is imperfect produce. Try them! Yay Yelp and Chris A.! I would have never heard of these guys if I wasn't on Yelp. This business concept is really very cool. I've been getting the Small Mixed Box ($29 for mixed conventional and organic produce) from Washington's Green Grocer for several months now. They bring it on Friday and leave it at my front door, so when I get home it's like produce Christmas! The contents are always much nicer than what I can get at the local supermarket. For instance, last time I got a lovely bunch of spinach, some red-leaf lettuce, two rutabagas, some white potatoes, some kiwi, apples, a grapefruit, bananas, and a few more things. Everything was ripe and ready to eat, except the kiwis, which needed a few days. I like the variety and the seasonality of it, and we're more likely to eat unusual things like rutabagas than I would be otherwise. You can also add regularly available items to your box, like organic butter & milk, or bunches of fresh herbs. The prices for those things are a bit high, but could be worth it for the sake of convenience. My husband was dubious that this was a good deal. I told him that even if it was more expensive than the regular grocery, it was better quality and hence worth it. But I decided to do some comparison. I made a list of everything in the box, and then went shopping at PeaPod online. The total came out to a few cents more than $29, so the prices for delivered produce were pretty darn equal. With WGG, you support more local growers than you would at a regular supermarket, though you still get bananas and kiwis from god knows where. I'm thinking about upgrading to the full organic box ($35), because then I'll feel even better about what I'm eating. read more

I loved their service a few years ago, and signed up again recently. My biggest frustration, and I get that there are shortages, is that we are charged for items that aren't delivered--and we can't get refunds. I wouldn't mind "account credit" if I actually saw it being used on future bills, but I don't. Either they need to make their system clearer, or they just need to offer refunds. Customer service is non-existent, they have a phone number but don't bother calling--they don't answer it, even when "open" instead, clients have to email (sometimes several times) before they get a response. The quality of the product, when it arrives, is mostly good. But sometimes the lettuces have been bruised and on one occasion we did get a sour milk (it was well before the Best Buy date, so it may have been a bad batch). My last issue is that we have a eggplant allergy in the house, and when I try to mark "don't deliver" eggplant, or other items into "don't like" in my account settings, it doesn't save. Refresh the page, and it's gone--and we got an eggplant in the delivery last week. So....yeah. read more

Not sure what has happened to this company. I used them several years ago and stopped but picked up using them again during the pandemic. All was great for the first 4 or 5 deliveries. Love the variety of their produce. Bakery items are good too. But my last delivery had a rotten tomato and a badly bruised peach - not a big deal but asked for credit. I did not get a response. So after a day - I noticed that a yellow squash was rotting. Again not a big deal but hadn't heard back about my earlier request so I sent another email, asking for a response or I will cancel my future orders. No response. That's what makes me mad. Bad produce happens but customer service should address customers. Instead of responding to me, they blocked me out of my account. I can't order again even if I wanted to. (Of course I emailed them about being blocked and didn't get a response.) Bummed because I liked the products. read more

oh my goodness I can't say anything good about this place. They advertise some of their produce as local and organic, and when it is delivered, you get either organic from the store or conventional from the store (Stickers and everything saying what country its from). But don't worry, you'll still pay an exorbitant price. IN our family now as a unit of price we use a WGG cauliflower ($8). So I will come back from the farmers market and say, "for a WGG cauliflower I got...!" In the spring they will claim to have local winter squash and in the fall/winter they will claim to have local tomatoes. I had an great experience ordering from Washington Green Grocers for the first time and have already prepared my 2nd order. I love that I know exactly the day they will B delivering to me each week and can start an order and then add to it up until 2 days before delivery. Looking thru their site, the food looked so appetizing and everything fresh and/or organic. Can't wait to try the spicy Italian vegen patties and I'm not even a vegen or vegetarian. After I Ordered I realized I had missed the ordering deadline by 4 hours. That meant I would receive the order in 9 days. I wrote an email to their Contact Us site and quickly got a response that they would deliver in 2 days. And they did!! Was happy to see that some items were still frozen so could pop them right into the freezer. They make online shopping a lot easier than some other sites. read more

The absolute worst! Good luck getting hold of a human being if you have any questions or issues at all. They do not respond to calls, emails, messages through their website. They are happy to take your money, though!! They even charged me months after I stopped ordering from them. Why? I hadn't ordered anything!!! And they wouldn't tell me what they were charging me for. I didn't know I could write a review for this service. It is seriously the best produce delivery service EVER! I mean...it's the only food service I've ever used BUT I hear that some places give you some shady looking stuff. That is not the case with Washington Green Grocer's. I love all of the options and food choices. You can opt to receive a regular shipment every week or you can pick and chose when you want to have your things delivered. It's not like a music or DVD club where you have to opt out or fear getting charged for something you don't want. With an on-line account you can easily alter or cancel your order up until the the day before (at a specific time). I've only had one problem with some bruised fruit. It was quickly resolved and I've only encountered friendly customer service. The small box of veggies is enough for one or two people. You can substitute any item on the weekly list for something else, so no bananas if you don't want them, just double up on your oranges. Awesome! They also have a nice bread, cheese, milk, and fresh herb selection. The prices can be a little high on some items but it is "local" fresh products and that is to be expected. I really appreciate their willingness to travel pretty much anywhere to deliver produce to areas where groceries stores are falling short. This is a great option if your New Year's resolution is to get on the right track with food. Time to place an order. read more

Holy fantastic service, Batman. I seriously wish I found this service when I moved to DC over a year ago. I have always wanted to participate in a CSA, but I have too many allergies, so the lack of ability to control the contest of each box was a deterrent. With WGG, that's not a problem. When you first sign up, you get to choose which type of box you prefer: organic-only, mixed, all-fruit, all-vegetable, or local-only. You also get to choose what size box and frequency of delivery (no need to get one every week if you don't want to!). Once WGG confirms you as a customer, the customization get even better. You can create a "Never" list of items you don't want to receive (great for pick eaters or those with allergies). If one of your "Never" items is scheduled for that week's standard, you can swap it out for something else. You can also create an "Always" list of items you want to see each time. In addition to the regular box, they have tons of supplemental items. Meats, dairy products, eggs, condiments, spices, recipe mixes, and the list goes on. it appears that most, if not all, of these specialty-item vendors are in the Northeast, so you can feel good about supporting local businesses. For my first order, I opted for the organic-only. Even though I ordered a small box, it was simply overflowing with fantastically fresh produce. And good god, it all tastes SO good. I may switch to a local-only box because I did notice that my avocados, while organic, were from Mexico. Oh, and the customer service? Fan-freakin-tastic. I LOVE WASHINGTON GREEN GROCER!!! I order the small box of organic veggies and it makes life so much more convenient. Fresh produce waiting at my door for me when I get home from work. It's also cool cause they have a checklist where you can check off everything that you do NOT like and they will make sure it's never included in your box. I live in Maryland so my delivery is on Tuesdays. I think it is helpful too because it adds variety into your diet that you may not do yourself if you were at the store picking out groceries. Also the produce isn't sitting around in the store waiting to be purchased. It's straight from the warehouse to your door which means it's fresher, and lasts longer. I can't believe I'm the first person to review Washington's Green Grocer! You bunch of scurvalicious yelpers! Buy some fruits and veggies already! I also can't believe I hadn't found out about these guys earlier. I was too busy thinking that Whole Foods or Eastern Market was the best produce around. I was dead wrong. This family business started when the foodie proprietors got tired of not being able to buy the same quality produce they got for their restaurants in their homes. Rather than complain, they decided to do something about it and started distributing the freshest food possible to their loyal customers. I get a small, mixed box, which runs me about $30 a week. The stand-out items for me are definitely the lettuce and the apples, both of which are as good I've ever tasted. The price might seem a tad steep, but considering they deliver it to your door (saving you the metro, gas, or flexcar) and that the quality is head and shoulders anything else, it's a steal...especially when it's so good it makes a meatatarian like me actually crave fruits and veggies. I have been a customer for about two months now, and I am done with this business. The first delivery came a week earlier than the communication I received stated, which was a surprise, and in the second delivery, several items were missing. Zeke, the owner, responded directly to these challenges. He was helpful, ensuring that he would reinforce processes with new staff, conduct additional training, etc. and had the missing items delivered to me later that same week. I decided to stick with the business and give them another chance. The service, however, has not gotten better over time. For a few weeks after these first few incidents, everything seemed fine (other than the fact that apparently a bunch of bananas consists of four pieces of fruit). Since then, however, the following has happened: I received an item on my "Never" list, the head of broccoli I got one week was turning brown/rotting, shriveled-looking peaches, and the zucchini I got two weeks ago had nasty-looking gouges in them and appeared underripe. This is not what I would expect from an organization that brands itself around "premium produce," and certainly does not consistently deliver product that is above and beyond what you would find at the local Safeway (yes, Safeway... not Whole Foods). The final nail in the coffin was this week, when they not only left out the mushrooms in my order, but my second bunch of bananas consisted of ONE banana. Really, WGG? I cannot recommend this service to anyone, and it is not worth going back to the administrators of the business to try to rectify it. I've been there, I've done that, and I'm over it. read more

I LOVE WGG! It seriously rocks my world. I get so excited to get my box from them. It's not a true CSA, but as a single person the small box works well. A lot of other places I looked only offered large boxes for families. That's just too much produce for me. Much of it would go bad before I could eat it. I also LOVE the flexibility. If I really don't like something on the list I can swap it for something else. I also really like being able to add a la carte items. Some are a bit pricey, but others are on par or even less than what I'd pay at the store or farmer's market. It has also been great for getting me to try things I wouldn't normally buy. I have been very pleased with both the quantity and the quality of the produce. If you are considering a delivery service like this I would highly recommend giving WGG a try. read more

Oh, hell yes. That's all. I love WGG and have yet to get anything I was disappointed with. Ever go to the grocery store and get all excited because blueberries are on sale so you buy 2 cartons of them, get them home, and find out two days later the bottom ones are already rotting? That's never happened with my produce from WGG; in fact, I've gotten produce (lettuce comes to mind, in particular) that lasts me well into my next box if I do a weekly delivery. In addition to produce they have various "pantry items" from fresh herbs to butter (in season). I've gotten ground beef and roaster chickens and both were excellent. I credit WGG for getting me to try things I NEVER would have normally (kale springs to mind). Sometimes I might wind up with more of a certain item then I know what to do with (erm, peppers) but most things freeze pretty well. I'm really happy and love how much they've expanded their offerings even in the year or so I've been buying boxes. While not a true CSA, the flexibility of ordering from them is awesome. Just a heads up, a lot of produce comes from far-flung locations during the winter but I've never had any problems with the quality of produce. During the growing season the majority, if not all stuff, comes from local farms. Without going off on some rant about FDA Organic designations etc etc, I find it best to go with the organic box in the winter and the mixed in the summer. I loved the idea of this, like PeaPod with better choices? So I signed up, offered my credit card and billing info before knowing what I was getting in to, and then browsed the site. I put a few items in my cart, but never checked out because I wasn't ready yet, and oh, there is no check out! A few days later, a paper bag was at my door with the 5 items I had chosen. Also, I picked half & half and Gouda cheese, both of which were left in this paper bag on my porch, in the 90 degree afternoon sun. So, my asparagus had been wilting with my sour dairy. Gross! Unacceptable! Why!! I didn't understand. I never got an email confirmation about my order, nor a call saying hi! We have delivered your dairy, might want to move it out of the sun now! No communication whatsoever. I canceled my account and that was that. Also, the brand of half & half is nothing special, they carry it at Whole Foods. Same for the blue diamond almond milk. It would have been better to get delivery from Whole Foods, where you can designate a time slot to be home. read more

Today our second shipment since signing up arrives and I am excited! My mom would never believe that I could get excited when it comes to fruit and veggies but Washington's Green Grocer has shown me the light!!! R loves his veggies. I only ate veggies if they were smothered in enough cheese and butter to no longer resemble a veggie or still retain any positive nutritional value. Over the years R has shown me that veggies can still taste good even when they're not dipped in Ranch dressing! Enter WGG! It just so happens R and I are in the midst of an overhaul of our eating habits and are trying to become healthier so the timing couldn't be better. WGG is introducing both of us to veggies we wouldn't normally try and I'm enjoying whipping up new recipes and experiencing new flavors. Aside from whatever your box will contain on a given week (I get so excited about the Friday email detailing the contents of the next box!!) WGG offers a la carte fruit and veggies, dairy products, and bakery items. We haven't tried anything outside the fruit and veggies yet but I'm thinking some fresh eggs and maybe some goats cheese might be nice to try out soon! The website features a weekly newsletter with recipes for the contents of the latest box which is cool and their last letter even included a listing for a dog that needed a new home. I wound up emailing with one of the owners (the wife, Lisa) regarding the dog and she was super friendly. It was cool to be in contact with her and I love supporting a local business. I have been a customer for four years, both for the on-demand residential and weekly office delivery. I truly give up with WGG, their nonresponsive customer service, and their fast-rotting or underripe produce. Basically I order WGG when I have a big dinner coming up, because I know I'll be using everything as soon as I receive it. The effort it takes to eat a whole small box (even with two people eating something out of it every day) before it spoils is not worth the premium paid. Here's a hard and fast rule: If residential delivery is on Thursday, EVERYTHING WILL ROT BEFORE SUNDAY. A few weeks ago, spinach arrived with spots on it, and everything - yes, really, everything that I didn't eat - else wilted, whimpered, and rotted away in my fridge but three days later. And this is when I was on a juice diet after wisdom teeth surgery, eating four or five pieces of fruit with every liquid meal, going through $80 of produce in two days - and yet, by Sunday, there was mold growing on my tomatoes. "Oh, but organic produce has a shorter shelf life." Yeah, but it's not three days. "You shouldn't have gotten so much if you weren't going to use it." I was going to use it until it rotted. I really don't like feeling like I'm on the clock to eat a whole head of bullshit butter lettuce. I get that we're talking a perishable food delivery here, but if you're going to charge $30 for a dinner, the bok choy shouldn't be actively dying when I receive it. Oh! And soup. Expired soup. Who delivers expired soup? Commercial delivery will quickly revert to residential delivery if you update your information on their website. Suddenly my office's weekly fruit delivery, rife with severely underripe bananas so green they only turn brown and never edible, shows up on Thursday instead of Monday because I updated the email associated with the account. Sure, the customer support is apologetic enough (when they finally get around to answering their phone, your email, or returning your call). But I have not yet seen a real solution to the problems I've had with Green Grocer. I'm done! Done! God forbid I actually grow my own food and not continue to throw my money into the trash. read more

This is a purely selfish review. After reading about the other's positive experience with this service. I really want it! But there are no other customers in my area. I'm writing this so that when people in my area come to my little spot on Yelp, they will see it and sign up! So far, I've had a good experience with this company. We had pleasant email communications and they seem to try their best to get to me, but unfortunately, I'm out of their range. I've been using WGG on and off for years, and I have nothing but great things to say. I am shocked by the reviews claiming that they have been unresponsive to emails, etc ... any time I have had ANY problems (which were few, and most involved problems with the website in its early stages, and/or me accidentally clicking the wrong thing), I have literally gotten a response to my email inquiry within 20 minutes (!), often by Zeke (the owner) himself. I'm a healthcare practitioner and I have recommended their services to many patients. As for the produce - yes, organic stuff does not last as long. So order the smallest box you need, and here's a great tip: buy some bluapple doohickeys to put in your crisper drawers. They absorb ethylene gas to help retard the process of spoilage. Seriously, they work. And if you have a repeated problem with a specific fruit or veggie - just swap it out for something else! I am amazed at how flexible their service is. Do not order from them...I received a farm basket yesterday for $55. The strawberries were moldy and the lettuce has tons of small green bugs. Yuck! I had to empty out my entire fridge and clean it and now there are green bugs all over my kitchen. I know there is a lot going on now but bugs all over produce is gross. I cannot speak more highly of Washington's Green Grocer! It has been an absolute game changer for me in my food and shopping habits. I have the small/mixed box delivered to me every other week for 33 dollars. If you don't want a delivery for a certain week, you can just cancel for that week or choose which weeks you want deliveries - it's super easy!. As a result of Green Grocer in my life, I have been bringing fruit to work to snack on every day, bring home cooked veggies for lunch more often (thereby saving money on breakfast and lunch), and have discovered new and fun recipes. The other day I made delicious veggie shephard's pie with potatoes, corn, green beans, carrots, and broccoli that I got from my green grocer box - it was awesome! If you don't like what they are sending you (for example, I never know what to do with watercress or boston lettuce), you can include them in your 'Never Items'. If you want an item delivered to you time (for me, it's apples and bananas), you can put them in your 'Always Items'. You can also add in specialty eggs, dairy, breads, and meats if you want them delivered on a specific week. It's pretty amazing! I tried RelayFoods previously, and I had to stop the deliveries because they would basically just send me loads of yams and potatoes, and a jug of apple cider that was not at all healthy. We added eggs for the first time this week, which organic, cage-free, etc. and did very well holding some potato pancakes together this morning. I returned home from work the other day to find a nice surprise on my front door step - my first delivery from the Washington Green Grocer. I ordered one box (small, organic, $37) to try out the service. It's not that I can't find good produce - we're surrounded by farmers' markets and there are two Whole Foods within a 15-minute drive - but instead, I was buying the same produce over and over again. Sure, it was colorful and healthy - spinach, sweet potatoes, red and yellow bell peppers, bok choy, apples and bananas - but we really needed to branch out and try some new items. Owners Zeke and Lisa launched WGG in 1994 guided by the mission "to provide excellent quality produce and locally and regionally produced products" to those in the D.C. area. Today, WGG offers conventional and organic produce, meat and poultry (grass-fed local beef, free-ranging hormone-free local chicken, and soon turkey, pork and lamb), dairy and eggs (eggs from free-ranging hens, organic milk, local small-batch butter, local cheeses), local and regionally produced pantry items, and seasonal specialities such as cranberry sauce, local free-range turkeys and challah. Every week, participants have the option to receive a box of conventional or organic produce (the majority of which is sourced locally) delivered directly to their doorstep. There is no contract required, and you can sign up for deliveries as often as you like - one time only, bi-monthly, or weekly. Plus, you can blacklist items you don't want, substitute other items, and add additional items as you see fit. The box contained: Purple potatoes 1 box of grape tomatoes (very sweet) 1 box of red seedless grapes (nice texture, but not very flavorful) 1 avocado Two large heads of broccoli Navel oranges D'Anjou pears (once ripe, these pears are amazing!) 1 bunch of four green bananas (delicious, and a nice normal banana size) York apples 1 large bunch of sweet white turnips Tatsoi (Asian spinach) (didn't have as much luck preparing this as I had hoped) Red leaf lettuce It was like an early veggie-ful Christmas! I have been a customer of WGG for several years with no complaints. However after not placing an order for a few months, I tried to sign on to place an order. Unfortunately, it seems I no longer have an account. It states my email is invalid and I cannot recover my password. I tried emailing them but no response. I feel that due to the CoVid 19 pandemic, they have too much new business so they are cancelling old clients to make room for more. Very poor business strategy because when it all blows over and these wonderful new clients go back to their farmers market, they will wish they had the old ones back. Yay! I am a fan! :o) I recently switched to Green Grocer from Door to Door Organics. Door to Door started giving me bad vegetables... some were rotten. Green Grocer has been great! All fruit and vegetables have been fresh, and I like being able to order other items (ground bison, eggs, organic milk). I also love that you can sign up for deliveries whenever you choose.. no need to commit to weeks you don't want. I only wish they had a more organized system for recycling their boxes. read more

This service is amazing for those of us that are looking to purchase more locally grown and/or organic fruits and vegetables without having to get up early in the morning, fight every other suburban hipster attempting to "go green" a la the recent trend at the Farmer's Market. I have purchased only the small boxes (mixed and all organic) and it's enough to come up with at least 3-5 meals and/or appetizer dishes for a family of 3 as well as fresh fruit for all of us for the entire week. I truly appreciate the option of reviewing what vegetables will be in my box late Sunday night and the ability to make changes until the night before delivery date, which for me is a Wednesday. They do not charge for "substitutions" like many other food subscription services do. I've never purchased any additional items, but would do so without much hesitation as long as it was a fruit or vegetable in season. The reason for this "in season" statement is due to the fact that some of the items I have seen are not in season and therefore look like they were picked up from your local grocery store (organic section if necessary, but still, a grocery store). Several examples were cherry tomatoes, avocados, and strawberries. For the price of these items, I'd prefer they were just not offered if not in season, or had to be shipped from a very far away location like Mexico or California. If we are as cognizant of the global issues that shipping produce en masse causes (otherwise what are our motivations for shopping for local produce) then we'd rather go without than take something out of season. It may be a good time to switch to Local Only boxes, but other than that I'm an extremely satisfied customer of WGG - would love to see them more active on Pinterest and open up their boards to their customers to pin more of the recipes that they have come up with for their produce. I hate to update to this, but I gave them a few more chances, and I still had problems. The last time I ordered Satsuma oranges (which are expensive but way better than normal mandarin oranges) and received literally cutie oranges, with the stickers on and everything, like someone just stopped at the grocery store and thought that'd be an okay substitute for the expensive organic oranges I'd ordered. Plus, received more inedible and bad produce. Soooo I'm done giving them chances now. read more

Washington's Green Grocer has convenient delivery, an easy to use online ordering system, and a decent variety and quantity of produce, however, the inconsistency in the quality of the produce is what led me to ultimately cancel my weekly deliveries. Most of the produce is just-in-time produce. While a level of this is to be expected, I had mushrooms, green beans, and tomatoes growing mold the day after delivery on separate weeks--the mushrooms were completely covered in mold. The few times that I requested substitutions, my order always arrived with the incorrect produce. A few times when I did not request substitutions, I still received incorrect produce. The level of care in each of the boxes is inconsistent and the box is ultimately not a good value for the quality of produce received. When I first learned of Washington's Green Grocer, I recommended them to several friends who also signed up for their service and have since also cancelled delivery--the system in place could be great, but the product just isn't. read more

I used Washington Green Grocer for many years when they were first in business on a weekly or bi-weekly basis depending on if we were in town or not. I then moved out of their delivery area. I am so happy that they are now expanded into my new my delivery area and that they have expanded the box options to include the build your own box option. When my child was younger, he would eat whatever I gave him. He is now 22 yrs old and not so easy to feed and is a bit more picky. So, I love being able to pick my own fruit and veggies to build my own box. Don't be scared away by the $10 fee for build your own box, if you fill it with the set minimum price--very easy to do, they deduct the $10, so it is essentially a delivery fee if you do not order more than I think $50 total no just all fruit and veggies. The addition of all the meat and other options is a great addition. The Irish Bangers are amazing! They melt in your mouth. It is now part of our every time order. I am so happy to be able to get the deliveries again :) read more
