I was a bit disappointed when coming in here. I was still getting the feel of things in the area on where I could do my grocery shopping that would be convenient for me. I'm not used to the chains here just yet, so I'm still lost when it comes to grocery shopping. In all honesty, I think this is the closest Safeway to me, but it isn't convenient in the least. To get here for me is a headache, parking is horrible, and the store just didn't feel inviting. Even while I was looking over the sales ad I got in the mail prior to coming here, it was like I was only coming here to get a few items as the prices were coming up better at a competitor. I honestly could have bypassed this altogether, but you live and learn. How else would I have known this would ultimately be a no go for me if I hadn't stopped in. I'm not saying I'm writing off Safeway altogether, but it is not going to be my first stop for groceries. read more

Yikes! Meat/Deli/Seafood area smells off. Not good. The store seems like the stock doesn't move a quickly there for older stuff just hanging around. The carts need a serious fixing or update. Many wheels do not turn well. Some make loud noises while pushing. Some rusting. Just bad. read more

This place actually sucks. My boyfriend ordered me flowers for our three year anniversary today and when the doordash driver arrived they said they didn't have any. My boyfriend was on the phone with his driver and the lady working at the counter refused to speak to him. My boyfriend then called the store and they didn't answer until he called four times. When they finally did answer, he asked about his order, why they would let him place it if they didn't have any flowers and how to get his money back and the lady hung up on him. He is now not able to get his money back and I don't get flowers for our 3 year anniversary. read more

Dear Store Manager, I'm writing to share some honest feedback about my recent experiences at your Greenbelt location. The other day, I noticed mice in the store, which was already concerning. Still, I chose to give your store another chance today because it's the closest to my home. Unfortunately, when I arrived, there were no shopping carts available inside, which made the experience frustrating and inconvenient -- especially on a day when I was simply trying to shop in peace. I want to be clear -- I didn't appreciate that. I ended up leaving and took my business to the Giant in Lanham just down the street, where carts were available and the overall experience felt more cared for. Never order using the Drive Up & Go service. They will never come to your car. You'll have to go inside to pickup. So you might as well go inside to shop yourself. The produce they pick out will be the worst, almost rotten items. What's the point of offering a Drive Up & Go service if you never actually get to drive up and go. read more

My closest grocery store... I have been going to Safeway since I was a kid, so there's nothing special to report here. Generally, everything is always organized when I peruse through the aisles, and it's pretty clean, so I appreciate that! Another thing I love is Safeway rewards. The best feeling is to scan all of your stuff and THEN swipe your card or put in your phone number. That amount of savings is amazing! I also love the fact there are four self-checkout kiosks. It makes life really easy. Now, there are some cons in this place. For my needs, sometimes ALL the spinach is going bad, so I end up not getting any. Sometimes I have to dig and dig and dig for a bag that's not a day from its expiration... but I am occasionally disappointed. I like semi-green bananas, but sometimes I have to settle for straight yellow/black. Most times they have the bananas I like, but there have indeed been some misses. It's also frustrating that the self-checkout lines aren't open late at night. They shut them down a couple of hours before the store itself closes. I wish they didn't do that, because sometimes I just want to be in and out quickly. read more

I just shopped at this store and got a reminder of why I rarely shop here. What I was going to buy would easily fit in a shopping basket, so I ignored the shopping carts at the entrance. Unfortunately, as is nearly always the case, there were no shopping baskets at the entrance I used, so I walked down to the other entrance. Nope. None there either. I looked in several checkout lines and finally found one...with unbought groceries in it. Finally, at one of the self-checkout machines, I found an empty one. With an "Excuse me" to the fellow shopper who was standing in front of it, I reached down and grabbed it, vowing never to darken this store's door again. I will continue driving past it to shop at the Giant or go to the Greenbelt Co-op, neither of which waste my time in this manner. read more

Decent enough grocery store if spendy. There isn't a Wal-Mart very nearby so maybe that is having some impact on their prices. I only popped in to pick up a few bits for my hotel room and some missing toiletries. Be really careful in the parking lot. I was here after 12 today and I witnessed 2 of there black men either both managers or just workers outside arguing with two white woman( there skin looked white but there features and their accents sounded of something different) and the next thing I know he has thrown her to the ground grabbing the cart she yelling at him! I don't know the story nor do I really care in what world does he live in that it is ok to violently push a woman to the ground! If there is that much of a problem call 911 not take it to the matters of putting your hands on someone! I gave one of these ladies my phone number and told her if she was gonna take action I'd be a witness for her! Because again 911 is the answer not putting your hands on her!that's all uncalled for! And in this day and age violence from one leads to violence of another and then a news story so for out black people we have to do better than this! About a year or so ago, I had hopes this store was getting better- good produce, friendly cashiers. Don't know what happened, but the past few times I've been here, it's been terrible, no matter what time of day or what day of the week. They don't have leafy greens, they have wilted yellow veggies. And it's not like there's only one 2 bunches left, there's piles of greens, lettuce, etc, so presumably they've been restocking the shelves with this stuff. And the trays the greens are kept in are slimy; do they ever clean the produce area, especially with water being sprayed on the veggies every few minutes? The pre-boxed or bagged greens don't look much better, even if the expiration date on them is a few days away, theyre wilted or even rotted.Went to bakery section today, where they have the more expensive breads and rolls. Brought a pack of rolls home, opened them up and they were stale. As for the cashiers? They don't acknowledge your presence at all, really strange. I had been coming to this store mainly because they have a few non-perishable items that other chain stores in the area don't have. But now I see these items are available on Amazon, so I guess from now on I'll order from there and buy my produce, breads, etc, at other stores with better quality merchandise and friendlier employees. read more

I don't understand the negative comments. I had to work in Hyattsville for a month this year and stayed at the Hilton near Safeway. I shopped there almost every day for little things, lunch, dinner, etc. I never had a bad experience. I've received three curbside orders in a row containing expired dairy products. My most recent order contained yogurt that was six months past its expiration date! I've personally gotten very sick in the past from accidentally eating an expired dairy product. I know stores are busier than usual with Covid precautions, but these items could make someone seriously ill and should not be lingering on shelves for six months after they expire. If you use curbside or delivery from this store, be sure to check expiration dates on all items before eating! read more

Came on a random day while I was in the area to avoid the rush hour traffic at home. I don't come to Safeway unless there is some uber sale, and I am able to save for $5 Friday, use my Just for You and Coupons....yes I am that frugal. Super easy to spot off of 193, huge parking lot, and it didn't appear to be over crowded considering it was $5 Friday and all. Everything that I was looking for was fairly easy to locate; although, the general placement of some of the aisles were quite odd. Some were rather small, and difficult to maneuver throughout. The wait time in line was quick, and not like my neighborhood Safeway, there were ample people to help you get on out. My only concern was the produce that I purchased, it did not keep as long as I am accustomed to. That is a definite issue. Will consider that if I'm in the area again. read more

What a crumby crappy outfit this place turned out to be. I will never set foot in another safeway in my life, I have also instructed my family not to shop there. I also encourage friends to shop elsewhere. I attempted to use their home delivery service a few weeks ago. I went online and ordered bags and bags of groceries for the upcoming week and charged it to my card. I selected the day and time for the delivery. I made it a point to get home early to receive the groceries. Then I kept getting texts that the groceries are on the way but delayed. The groceries never showed up so I login to the account and see that my grocery delivery had been canceled! WTF? So I call up the customer service # and the rep says they canceled the delivery because the driver never showed up! They canceled it and the only way I find out is after logging into the site. They never took the time to contact me but then why would they? I'm just another POS useless customer to them. The rep said they would refund me within 5 days!! I said what about compensation for my time wasted? They agreed to compensate me an additional $20. Needless to say to get my refund I had to go through the Better Business Bureau because my refund did not show up in 5 days! I did finally get the refund but then they refused to pay the $20 compensation as the rep had promised! I contacted the BBB again and the bottom line is Safeways response was screw you sucker! UPDATE: Safeway responded back with a canned response as seen below. The apology was useless. Safeway has already shown their true colors. They don't want to hear from me. They made no attempt in refunding the $20 compensation as promised. My review stands and Safeway no longer has a place in my life for doing business with in the future. read more

I feel bad. I mean, it isn't the fault of this store that The Powers That Be think the residents of P.G. County don't really need grocery stores so there aren't that many grocery stores and naturally they're crowded nightmares because despite what the PTB may thing, people need to eat. Also, I should confess that given my way I would never shop anywhere except Giant and My Organic Market. However, the picture of the loooooong line someone posted is not an exaggeration and that's not normal, even for the grocery store deprived area I live in. So do not go in there if you're in a hurry, you'll just get upset. Also, their produce section is organized to according to principles laid down by the Annoying & Disorganized School of Fruit & Vegetable Display. I did the grocery delivery service today. It was a horrible experience. Over half of my groceries were still at the store. I had to call the store. Luckily, they were able to confirm that my items were still in the crate. The Door Dash delivery driver had to return to the store to get my items. This place has used up its last pass from me. Came in today at 1:45 to grab cough medicine and juice. THIRTY MINUTES in line. No lie. In spite of the store being dirty and often seemingly without staff, it's still my neighborhood store. I used to shop at Vons in SoCal and Safeway is same chain but OMG this Coast cannot seem to figure out what customer service is. The people working seem stressed beyond measure or have a "I could give a crap" attitude. Way to represent a Union shop. Not. Not sure if management is really this clueless, but nothing good is happening at this store. I advise you to pass. Take the drive to Wegmans in Lanham. I have decided to try this Starbucks one more time due to encountering a rude staff this weeks crew has had wonderful customer service.. I recommend asking for the two young ladies Ana & Donne these two greets you respectfully and politely I only trust these two to make my drinks there are always on point !!. The other staff on the other hand must wake up on the wrong side of the bed bad customer service and always rude drinks taste watered down and not hot . I shop in this supermarket occasionally due to where I'm located and its proximity to other businesses I patronize. I have found this store has gradually declined in appearance, the service of its staff, and yes of course, its looooong lines (of which most Safeway Stores are famous for). Although the store is generally clean, its appearance has been sagging as of late- floors are dirtier, deli and hot bar areas un-kept (and the napkin holders frequently empty), produce section cluttered sporadically, and scrap produce laying around. Then there's the staff- never known for their friendliness, they seem to have reached a new level of apathy and ignoring the customer's needs. This particularly is acute at the register and self check-out (lots of times they're not around to help if the self check-out device has stalled due to an "erroneous scan"). And, of course, there are the lines: I can honestly say I've NEVER been in this store and have just sailed through to check out with little or no wait. This (and most other Safeway Stores) are notorious for under-staffing, so there are regularly long lines. Even with SIX self check-outs open when I was here this past weekend, I had about a dozen persons ahead of me, with a wait time of about 15 minutes. Time is valuable to people, and customers will go elsewhere as new options open up in the area, like Lidl and Whole Foods. I avoid this (and most Safeway's) when possible, but when I find it's "convenient" to stop in this store, I'm always reminded how ill-managed and in decline this store is. read more

I see the average rating is 2 out of 5 stars here. I'm actually astonished to see that. I have never had a problem here. In fact, I consider this Safeway and the one on East-West Highway as being the better of the Safeways in the Washington DC area. I have always come here getting what I need and never left without something I needed. The customer service is usually on point too. I'm not sure why they're rated so lowly, but I consider them one of the best I've been to in the Safeway chain. read more

This use to be my go to store as of 12/12/21 this store will no longer get a penny of my money. I went in here Sunday 8:00 am to do my usual grocery shopping per usual there is 1 or 2 lines open. I ended up at self check out like always. I'm scanning my items and I know she is watching me which is fine. I scan my garlic bread and lay it on the baggage section because the bags are full. She comes over walk past and says you need to scan that. Which I in response show her it's scan. Then she does the same with chicken I scanned at this point I'm getting frustrated and embarrassed.My cart is full so I'm trying to scan everything and put it to the side so I can place my bagged items in the cart. So they can see I'm bit stealing I'm paying my hard earned cash in here. The little short dude comes over to me and says it's only supposed to be 10 items are less here. Ok where is the sign he goes and look and realize there is no sign. There has never been a sign since I been going to this store the last year.So then he says she will scan the rest of my stuff. I'm in self checkout I don't need her to scan my stuff. All these other folks who were around me and your focused on me. This was embarrassing to my character. Seriously the worst Safeway! No one is ever at the customer service desk when you need them to be. Waiting for assistance there will take longer than it would to just go to a neighboring store for what you need! Today was my final straw i went to the customer service desk and the man that was meant to be there happened to be on break. I understand he's hungry, eat man. But when i asked another cashier if they could help they all said no they couldn't. One lady even had her cashier light off and was like no I'm about to go on break and walked past me like she could care less. Playing lotto numbers would of took a whole minute! The absolute disrespect today was ridiculous. They acted like I wasn't there and there needs to be a reevaluation of the workers here. I experienced way too many workers with a damn ATTITUDE when I go here. You can see my patience has expired so FIX IT. I don't care how convenient it is I will be taking my money elsewhere. There is absolutely NOTHING wrong with the store, it's actually huge & definitely seems updated. However, the staff is the worst I've seen in a grocery store. Went here a few times recently to grab dinner while in the area for business. First thing I noticed was a large group of youth including some employees, hanging out by the entrance causing a scene. It was a little daunting to walk past. Now, before you get your panties in a twist about that comment, keep in mind that I'm from the Bronx & do NOT scare easily. However, this was not a scene I'm accustomed to while grocery shopping. Multiple times, I have found the lines inside to be ridiculously long. I noted that there were only 1 or 2 registers open, & then questioned why there are employees hanging out in the entrance of the store. In addition, on more than one occasion, I've seen the manager (female, middle-aged) "scolding" more than one of the young, male employees. Telling them to "get back to work", or asking what they were doing. My purpose in writing this: I hope a member of management reads this & tries to change some things. Awful. I rarely come here anymore, even though I live a mile away. I just got back from a road trip, and came to this store at 9:30 pm to pick up a couple of items. Never again. Never.Ever.Again. First of all, there were carts all over the parking lot and trash in front of the store. There were no hand baskets anywhere. It must have been break time for 98% of the employees. A lot of the aisles had empty space, especially in the section I was in. It was dim. It was dingy. Only one register was open, and none of the self service checkout registers was open. I walked out. Contrast: I went to Giant at Eastgate, a few miles down the road. There were shopping carts in line in front of the store, and in the cart corrals. There were hand baskets, sales circulars, and actual personnel stocking items on the shelves. The store was brightly lit. It was clean, and smelled okay. Employees actually looked like they enjoyed being here. Corporate really needs to intervene in this store. Better yet, shut down this Safeway and replace it with a Trader Joe's. read more

I accidentally found this Safeway on my way to Baltimore from Richmond. I was a little hungry and the cheeseburger I had just purchased from Wendy's just wasn't doing it. I wanted something sweet. Some egg nog! Christmas Eve is apparently the busiest day at this store because there were huge lines to check-out. I used the self check-out and even that was literally a 15 minute wait. The store is really big and has a Starbucks inside. Not sure how useful that is since there is also a Starbucks in the shopping center, but I digress. I really liked the carrot muffin I got in their bakery, but they only had one brand of egg nog. I took a gulp and ended up ditching it in the parking lot. Sorry for not recycling! read more

I was sexually harassed by a male cashier and a customer on different occasions and when I reported it to the female assistant manager, she was condescending and dismissive. I have had female cashiers laugh at me and speak of their private intimate lives in front of me, including their 'tinder dates', information I would not care to hear from even my closest of friends. The store is always understaffed, less than a decent standard of clean, and the salad bar is also a disgrace. Once, when I was ill and dizzy, broke out in a sweat and almost passed out, the cashier was laughing at me instead of showing any concern. Since I still shop at this store I decided to give the pharmacy a try. Never again. 7:10pm on a Monday night, I drop off an Rx. I was told it would be about an hour. An hour? Okay, well, I've never waited an hour for an Rx anywhere else, ever. But whatever, I have grocery shopping to do, so I'll take my time. An hour later I go back to pick up my Rx. I'm told "it's not ready, the pharmacist is on the phone, we're backed up. Probably about 40 minutes." (!?!?!?!!!!!) So I say "Well I've already been here an hour. The only reason that I've been here this long is that I was waiting for this prescripton." She says, rudely, "We're backed up, there's nothing we can do, IT HAPPENS." I told her to give my Rx back to me and that I'd have it filled elsewhere. In response to "it happens", I told her "well it doesn't happen anywhere ELSE." I called the 800-number for customer service to complain, and a manager should be calling me. We'll see what they have to say. Anyway, go get your prescriptions filled somewhere else, like Target, where the Pharmacists are FRIENDLY and it only takes about 20 minutes. This place has been going downhill consistently over the past several years. I have had enough. I'm not even going to come here anymore seeing that now not only is the product selection more limited than ever, it's also more expensive than everywhere else. There's just simply no point in coming here anymore. I wish that this place was closed down and a decent supermarket could open in its place. The store is also notorious for leaving only one register open in the evening and having one single line of very frustrated people waiting to check out (going to the back of the store), and for closing down the self checkout at about 8 or 9 PM. Note: The self checkout requires only one store employee to oversee, and there are four registers, yet they prefer to bottleneck every single customer into one line with one overworked, apathetic person running the check out and taking their time doing so, and it is clear that the management in the store have absolutely no respect for people's time who come and shop here. I simply have better things to do and better places to spend my time and money. read more
