She didn't greet and ask what I want to drink, also she kept asking me to give her more tips and said people need to pay at least 15% tips in America, I don't know what should I say cause her behavior doesn't worse more tips and she even tried lie to me about the total price. I will never go to another sushi place in Montgomery County as long as Wasabi Zen is around and serving sushi like we had tonight. I've gotten so used to sushi being a mediocre pile of rice and fish that is only good when dipped in copius amounts of wasabi and soy sauce that I only ordered from the cheap and boring end of the menu, because anything more would seem like a wast of money. However, even the cheap end of the menu (tuna roll, california roll) at Wasabi Zen was excellent. And now I'm planning to come back with just my husband (and not the sushi swallowing machine known as my son) so that we can savor more of the interesting rolls in peace. A gem in Olney... one of those tucked away places for locals who love Sushi. Wasabi Zen is a casual little place with roughly a dozen tables and an exceptional variety of roll combinations to make even the picky Sushi lover happy. Solid traditional choices are available (spicy tuna, California rolls. tempura creations) along with more extensive works (rainbow rolls / dragon etc. All fresh and all delightful. I ordered using a delivery app and my poor driver had to sit there for an hour and half and wait for my order that they hadn't even started yet. Apparently they don't start Grubhub or UberEats orders until the driver comes and pays, all in all took 2.5 hours to get food. Worst part is when I called Wasabi Zen to get the status of the order the attendant was rude, put me on hold several times before even talking to us. Been here many times since moving to the area. It's deceivingly empty at times and for a while I was hoping that they weren't in trouble for business, but they certainly make up for the quietness most nights with the amount of take out they do, people are in and out picking up orders all night. Love the sushi, always fresh, never had any problems... the plum wine they serve is sweet, but nice with sushi and I always get a glass. I took 1 star away because my favorite roll is spicy tuna and they don't do it the way I like it... I prefer the tuna is chopped up and mixed with spicy sauce and then rolled up...they basically make a tuna roll and dump way too much spicy sauce on top of it. After wiping some sauce off its of course still good, but not my preference of how to make that roll. Highly recommended for sushi, soybeans and wine... never had anything else there. read more

Honestly, the food is good. Order it to go and pray they aren't busy. The staff are awful. Very rude and make you feel like an inconvenience no matter how much $$ you are giving them. If it was just about the food, this place would be okay--but it's not. These are the rudest people you'd never want to order food from. If you order $50 worth of food you'd expect that it's okay to ask for more than two sets of chop sticks. They act like you're disturbing them when you pick up food. Came here looking to satisfy my Japanese/sushi craving but sadly I left disappointed. The 4-star rating on Yelp is totally deceiving as most of the reviews seem to have been written by yelpers who literally created a Yelp account to boost this business' rating. Not that it really matters, but this is one of those "non-Japanese" owned sushi restaurants. Typically, I'm not a fan of "non-Japanese" owned sushi restaurants and I was quickly reminded why. I ordered the Salmon avocado salad and specifically asked the young waitress to put the dressing on the side and she repeated dressing on side twice. Well, as you can see from the photo I posted, the dressing definitely did not come on the side. And the lettuce they used was old and brown, as if it had been sitting outside-- so cheap of them to use iceberg lettuce, I mean they could have used greens or romaine. My guest asked our waitress what was in their shrimp teriyaki and why it was priced at $24 and she couldn't answer either question. Um, really unprofessional. How can you work at a restaurant and not know what is in your dish? Plus she blamed the chef...they didn't bother to do anything about it. Advice: they need to work on who they hire but I'm probably guessing the waitress is the owners daughter or something. Best sushi ever! Whenever I'm in town visiting family I HAVE to come here. The spicy tuna salad is one of a kind and sooo good

I'm writing this review with mix emotions as I have been coming here for years. Loyal patronage needs to be recognized. The food is usually very very good and I love the main sushi chef. Hell, I've even hit golf balls with the owner at Olney Golf Park. That being said, the cost of the menu is way too $$$ and it's becoming a deal breaker. Went to dinner this evening with my two kids (10 and 12). My 10 year had chicken off the menu (which was ordered wrong), the other had sushi with me and the bill was $125 + tip. $140? Come on!!! Worse, when the check came I told the server that the chicken came out wrong and my kid didn't like nor would he eat it. "ok sorry" was all I got and it wasn't offered to be removed from the bill. Again, I like the place but I'm not going to get into an argument with someone who speaks broken English about an entree that should have been removed as a courtesy. That's bush league or just plain arrogantly rude. Been going for 15 years and have spent $,$$$.$$ I don't think I will be back. Sounds silly, but it matters... This place was fantastic, really nice dining experience. Great nigiri, good rolls (though I admit, wasn't a fan of a California roll knock-off whose name I can't remember that had three different types of fish on it... but I also don't like California rolls), and a great atmosphere. Wait staff were friendly and attentive. Prices were decent for sushi in this area. It's really hidden away in a pseudo-strip mall in Olney and parking is a little tight, but it's a nice find. We have tried and looked for a sushi spot for almost 8 months. We went all over Rockville, MD. Tried about 6-8 different places. We found ourselves disappointed and even scared a few times. I can't believe Wasabi Zen was basically in our backyard. There service is always so friendly and the sushi is the best we've had. Our favorite is the Hawaiian Roll. It's delicious and we highly recommend it. The Japanese Bagel Roll is a close second. The miso soup is always so good and we have tried the bento boxes as well. They are pretty good but always want more sushi. One thing I have noticed is that the rolls could be rolled a bit more tightly but that has nothing to do with how delicious they are. The atmosphere is nice. They usually have something soft playing. They have a cool looking sushi bar and there is plenty of room to hold a private conversation. I would have never know that they were located where they are because they don't really advertise that I know of and they also don't have a web site. If you're ready to eat some great sushi and like friendly service, I highly recommend this spot! read more

I gave this place 5 stars before, but the other night made me question as to whether they were truly deserving of the high rating. I went into Wasabi Zen at 9PM. The sign on the front claims they close at 10. I asked if I could sit at the bar and when I sat down, I noticed that the sushi chef was cleaning up his station. He acted irritated while I looked over the menu, as if he was expecting me to hurry up. I ordered a tuna hand roll and it was disappointing. It had very little meat in it. First time I ate there I had what looked like dog or cat hair in a roll. I'm not that picky, so I tried again. Ordered rolls for pickup, they said 45 minutes. I showed up an hour later and they hadn't started my order! Absolutey ridiculous...and as I complained, all I heard back was "I'm not the owner." However, do not go here if you would like great service- even decent service. The people that work here treat their customers awfuly. To start they over charge and up-charge everything. If you order takeout, they wait until you get there to begin making food and won't give you an answer as to when you can expect your food- until you pay of course. I have to say that the quality of food here is amazing I have been here a number of times and have never ever had a complaint. All of there sushi is to die for but today I treated myself to a salmon teriyaki bento box with wild mushroom soup, hot green tea and a glass of water and omg was not disappointed at all the salmon was perfectly cooked the salad was refreshing the tempura vegetables were perfect and light the crispy not oily at all the sushi to die for as said before and the pot stickers were sooo good. A lovely best-kept secret of Olney. I've been coming here for a few years. As someone who eats a fair bit of sushi and other Japanese cuisine, I'd definitely give them high marks for food quality. My particular favorite is a mild specialty roll called a Pink Lady. Of course on colder days I enjoy the udon soup. The dining room is a bit small, but bright and rather nicely decorated; very tasteful. Despite the size, the restaurant's hidden location means that it is rarely packed with people. That's good for us customers, but I hope it doesn't hurt them as a business, as I'd hate to seem the go away. The one quibble I have is price. Compared to several other Japanese places in the region, they do charge a bit more for many of the same dishes. For example udon soup is $8.95 in a Rockville place I go, but at Wasabi Zen it's $14.95. The disparity is not as bad with sushi bit it is noticeably higher that what most places charge. read more
