I've been coming here all summer for it's one saving grace: four 25-yard lap lanes, which rarely get too crowded. But I've found myself coming here less and less because I end up getting annoyed by the staff of teenagers who clown around so much you wonder if they're even getting paid to be here. I've literally watched them throw each other into the lap lanes where people are swimming and kick around a ball that repeatedly ends up in said lap lanes. I don't expect teenage lifeguards to be uber-professional, but I do expect them to act like they're at a job. It's not like $3/visit is much, but the fact that people pay to use this pool warrants some degree of order for crying out loud. I won't say much about the people who patronize this pool, but you can imagine how out of control this place can get if the staff is full of clowns. The pool itself isn't bad, although I'm not sure it's vacuumed more than a couple of times a week based on the crap I've seen collecting in the bottom. Today I actually saw a cockroach chilling on one of the lane dividers, if that gives you an idea of how seriously cleanliness is taken here. This pool has so much potential to be an oasis in the summer, and if it weren't so convenient I wouldn't come here at all. It's worth a few minutes in the car to head up to the DC pool at East Potomac, which is a Roman bath house compared to this place.

It is open to the sky without building interference. Music in the background and a leafy fence to make the air conditioners invisible. There is a bit of noise from those on one end but not unbearable. There are also a few poolside games like bags, large Jenga and a sort of bucket toss. One downside is the lack of outlets and no hotel WiFi. Would recommend if you have some down time!

The main pool is…read morespacious and offers plenty of space to float about, play water games, or swim laps in two sectioned off lanes. They have a fun slide and diving board area as well. There is also a separate kid play area with one of those waterfall mushrooms/umbrellas. They also have an astro turf playground and a basketball court in addition to plenty of picnic areas and large bathrooms with showers/changing areas. The life guards also enforce a 15 minute adults only time in the main pool at quarter of each hour. Our friend's son participates in their swim lessons and for $20, you get a one-on-one session with a lifeguard for 30 minutes. The price seems pretty reasonable to me for this area and her son has become a much more confident swimmer over the past month. We had a relaxing experience in the sun and water with our friends. Definitely recommend this location to others.

There are also racquet ball courts which evidently are pretty nice according to the guys I spoke with who use them. There are payrooms for younger children and they evidently also have a party room for birthdays. Finally, there's a weight room. The Rec Center is reasonably clean and there's a sauna in both changing rooms. You can bring your own lock, use no lock, or pay 50 cents to use the key on the locker. The staff at this Rec Center are wonderful. They're friendly, helpful and accommodating. Clearly however, this place is severely underresourced. Three men's locker room is cold, really cold when you come in from the pool. There are about 6 showers, but half of them don't have earn enough warm water to take a comfortable shower. The pool is really nice, and it's great that the length is 25 meters, not yards. But given the high demand and the ever changing schedule, swimming laps isn't as easy as it ought to be. Especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The weight room is truly sad. The room is small, that's a function of the building's size. That's not the issue for me. There are several machines that haven't been maintained for what looks like a very long time. They are rusted, most squeak, some so loudly that you really can't use them. The padding is worn on several of the machines as well. There are also treadmills, arc trainers and a rowing machine. The rowing machine is in relatively good repair. I didn't use the others. Unfortunately, other than a very low membership fee, especially for residents of Alexandria, there are just so many better options available that I don't recommend Chinquapin Rec Center. I've decided to join the Franconia Rec center in Fairfax. It's more expensive, but it's twice as good!

OneLife Old Town Alexandria update January 2026…read more Looking back to July 2025 when I first reviewed Onelife Fitness - Old Town Alexandria, VA, things have only deteriorated. Apparently corporate management determined not to allow any additional time between the end of the 11 a.m. Tuesday and Thursday Tai Chi classes and the noon start of Functional Lab (on Tuesdays) and BodyPump (on Thursdays). As a result, participants in the Tai Chi classes are still in the room at 4 minutes to noon, because management has elected not to change the schedule to permit more time in between these classes. Today the Group Fitness Director was personally present before the start of the noon Functional Lab class, and deflected concerns raised by participants waiting to get set up for the noon Functional Lab. She dismissed those concerns: she imagined, hypothetically, that participants in the Tai Chi classes would reject the schedule change, saying that if the 11 a.m. class ran from 11 to 11:50 instead of 11 to 11:55 a.m., it would appear that this was a "Tai Chi Lite" class. That hypothetical seems to ignore reality; it also permits continuing disrespect shown by the Tai Chi instructor toward both her peer instructors and participants in the noon classes. As the Fitness Director personally witnessed today, the Tai Chi instructor was still holding class at 11:56 a.m., disregarding the schedule. Whether this approach is due to the Tai Chi instructor's deliberate disrespect of the incoming class (and the respective instructors) or simply her inattention to the time, management has yet to effectively address this problem.

We got their with only two hours left and weren't charged anything. 2) Pools: One side has lap pools for adults and lessons. The other side has a large pool, lazy river, little kid space, and water slide for families. The water was clean and the lazy river was fun. (The current is stronger than expected making it fun.) 3) Space: They have family changing areas with showers with hot water, lockers (bring your own locks), and more. Upstairs is a gym and an outdoor terrace bleeding into Long Bridge Park with views of National Airport and Washington, D.C. 4) Parking: With such a large parking lot, you can usually find a space. Of course, parking is free. 5) Area: Afterwards, grab lunch or dinner at nearby Crystal City where you can find fats casual like Rasa and sit-down restaurants.
