The environment, teachers, and curriculum at this swim school could not be better for creating confident swimmers.

I started with my only "complaints" but in reality they are all reasonable and easy enough to manage. Here's why we love Goldfish! My older kid, now 7, has been attending regular lessons off and on for a couple of years, and the younger just started at age 3. We now have one child in junior 1 level and one above to move up to pro 2. Between those levels are "glider" levels. The classes are all age, skill, and developmentally appropriate and the teachers are clearly well trained to accomplish the goals and values of the swim school/company. The bright murals on the walls are inviting, fun, and make it a really friendly place for kids to learn something new. Parents/families can watch right on the other side of the pool through a clear wall. I know this is helpful when kids are a bit nervous and can easily glance over and see a face they know. There are around 10 fitting rooms which are well maintained and that does seem to be the right number to keep things moving at every half hour mark in a day. Finally, the front desk staff is always there to help and does a good job with all that they have to manage. Special shout-out to Melvin, who is by far the favorite and most effective of many great swim teachers my kid has tried through the years.

The Aqua tots class has made her feel comfortable about the pool and helped her submerge into the water naturally. I highly recommend Coach Kya. She took the time to explain the steps and what the parent needs to do in each move in order for the child to complete the desired action. We had other coaches before her and we found ourselves confused and we just followed what other parents were doing in each move. Coach Kya was the first one to tell us we were doing it wrong and patiently guided us to execute the steps correctly. The facility is new and clean. There are changing rooms, family restrooms with showers. They also have lollipops and stickers at the front desk for the students which is a nice touch. They are tech friendly, you can download the app and schedule make up classes easily. They also track the students' progress in the app, including the moves they learnt each class and the coach's feedback on when the student can move to the next level. Price is comparable to other big swimming chains such as Goldfish, Big Blue. Class ratio is 1:4 but if you get lucky, you can get 1:1 when other students cancel the group class. Will recommend!

This was a more affordable option than other indoor pools in the area, so I returned a few times. The locker rooms require quarters if you want to store your belongings.

There are also racquet ball courts which evidently are pretty nice according to the guys I spoke with who use them. There are payrooms for younger children and they evidently also have a party room for birthdays. Finally, there's a weight room. The Rec Center is reasonably clean and there's a sauna in both changing rooms. You can bring your own lock, use no lock, or pay 50 cents to use the key on the locker. The staff at this Rec Center are wonderful. They're friendly, helpful and accommodating. Clearly however, this place is severely underresourced. Three men's locker room is cold, really cold when you come in from the pool. There are about 6 showers, but half of them don't have earn enough warm water to take a comfortable shower. The pool is really nice, and it's great that the length is 25 meters, not yards. But given the high demand and the ever changing schedule, swimming laps isn't as easy as it ought to be. Especially on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The weight room is truly sad. The room is small, that's a function of the building's size. That's not the issue for me. There are several machines that haven't been maintained for what looks like a very long time. They are rusted, most squeak, some so loudly that you really can't use them. The padding is worn on several of the machines as well. There are also treadmills, arc trainers and a rowing machine. The rowing machine is in relatively good repair. I didn't use the others. Unfortunately, other than a very low membership fee, especially for residents of Alexandria, there are just so many better options available that I don't recommend Chinquapin Rec Center. I've decided to join the Franconia Rec center in Fairfax. It's more expensive, but it's twice as good!
