We walked out there with the dogs (which are welcome and the pub even provide treats and water) and had a lovely Sunday lunch on their terrace followed by a game of table tennis in the garden. It's not just the garden and the settings that make this place so wonderful, it's the service, the food, the home made honey and everything that goes with it. The worst thing about the Wheatsheaf is having to leave. Highly recommended.

Room 4 has a large bathroom and a reasonably sized bedroom with a four poster bed. The style is very traditional and comfortable. Room 4 also includes it's own small lounge with bed setee and TV. Room 3 is more modern in finish and includes a large bathroom and a large bedroom which has a modern four poster bed (that creaks a lot when you turn over!) and a bed setee. Both rooms were clean and well finished but room 4 felt that style had triumped over function to some extent. The inn has a large car park (very necessary as it gets busy) and a slightly tired children's play area. Children are welcome in selected parts of the pub. One unusual feature is a sit on diesel train they run in the garden. I would have given 5 stars but for the slight disappointment with Room 3 and also because whilst we were there they had a leak in the family room but instead of closing that section they just put a bucket there and expected people to put up with the smell of damp carpets (until a member of staff responded to our comments and found us somewhere elses to go). Overall though, highly recommended.

However, my mother and I have wanted to like the food over and over again and feel there is a lack of understanding of food. It's cooked nicely but without the sort of understanding we hope to expect in places like this. But I am a vegetarian and so this amy well explain things. They can make something veggie for you but it will not overwhelm you. I prefer the more ordinary bar food. They have very nice rooms and packages. I can imagine that if you want a quick hit of all that is great about England before you jet of somewhere, of if while away on another sunny shore you have dreamt of that first roast dinner upon your return to England then this is certainly one of the best places to come. A beautiful building with wonderful customer service and fantastic freshley cooked local food. Places like this don't need to advertise as word of mouth pretty much does it all for them, and all I hear is good things, which is why I paid them a visit, and they certainly did not dissapoint.

Knowing it's punters are usually people waiting for a plane, the restaurant is open all day so those awkward departure or delayed arrivals are not a problem, as you can arrange your meal around your itinerary. The pub does have it's fair share of regualrs from the village though, and as a result has a decent selection of ales, lagers and beers on tap. Not really worth a special trip, but definitely one to look our for if your near the airport.

I often find that you cannot judge a pub by its exterior. We were pleasantly surprised this afternoon. I don't know who put the spaniel by the door, but it was the perfect welcome! :) Welcome at the bar, not crowded but very cosy with a lovely open fire. We were guided to a lovely table by the fire which was perfect. We had a lovely lunch too. My wild boar sausages with leek and herbs were fantastic, all meat and no filler I could detect. The mash was yummy and the gravy. The veggies were water logged but I don't hold that against them. (my meal was less than £9.) My companion ate ham, egg and chips and it looked good. The puds that arrived at the table next door looked pretty good and were appreciated. Hobgoblin on tap, Butcombe bitter amongst others. A lovely local pub in Winterbourne Down…read more This has been my family's local pub for around 20 years and it hasn't changed one bit. It's still as charming, still has the same locals, still the same landlord and, I think, still the same roaring log fire. The Cross Hands doesn't do food, but it does do lots of guest ciders, ales and a brilliant atmosphere. The landlord and landlady (Pete and Lesley) are great (Pete is the spitting image of Peter Stringfellow - with open shirt and hairy chest) and make you feel like part of the furniture - which can make leaving quite difficult at times! Friday nights are good fun. Typical local pub style. A bit of cheese on the jukebox and a good mix of young'ens and old'ens to keep it interesting from one end of the pub to the other. But the best thing about this pub isn't its huge back garden. It isn't the fact you can use one of their massive BBQ's and bring your own meat/food. It isn't even the regular events they hold in the summer with live bands and cider in boxes. The best thing about the Cross Hands is the pub dog. A beautiful Staffordshire Bull terrier who has the gentlest demeanour and wonderful personality. She'll pin her belly to the ground and wiggle her way over to say hello. All the while snorting like a little pig. She has her own arm chair and sits with the locals who play cards on the big round table from 4pm every day. This is a lovely little boozer that has a huge garden for the summer and wonderful warm log fire for the winter. As it is out of town, you can knock 40-80p off the price of pint. A must if you're in the area.

The pretty stone building covered in creeper sits in the centre of the tiny village of Kelston, right on the roadside. You know it'll be good, and you're not disappointed. Duck inside the door and you're faced with two bars serving several small but characterful rooms draped with hops and flagstone floors. Beers are as expected - Bath Ales and Ashton Press ciders amongst others. I didn't eat there - but the sizes of the sarnies being brought out from the kitchen sure looked spectacular - we're talking doorstopper of thick cheddar and pickle. Actually, I wish I did eat there and I'm going back.... For summery days there's a secluded back garden, where you can't even hear the main road.
