In fact it is one of the nicest places I've been to in the Bristol/Bath area. So there. The pretty stone building covered in creeper sits in the centre of the tiny village of Kelston, right on the roadside. You know it'll be good, and you're not disappointed. Duck inside the door and you're faced with two bars serving several small but characterful rooms draped with hops and flagstone floors. Beers are as expected - Bath Ales and Ashton Press ciders amongst others. I didn't eat there - but the sizes of the sarnies being brought out from the kitchen sure looked spectacular - we're talking doorstopper of thick cheddar and pickle. Actually, I wish I did eat there and I'm going back.... For summery days there's a secluded back garden, where you can't even hear the main road.

The atmosphere is warm and cosy and as the building has many original features still in tact it also gives of a certain country pub charm. The business is split into the two traditional sections of a bar/ bar eating areas and a more formal restaurant area. Food here is mostly traditional based country pub food with a few hidden gems. The savoury eccles cake is amazingly tasty and well worth a try if it's available on your visit. Meal sizes are just right and the selection of local ales is good. The service was friendly, fast and efficient (really couldn't have asked for better).

For that sort of thing it's fine! Back to the matter on hand, we were looking for Sunday lunch!! So the 4 1/2 star rating and the signs outside saying 'fresh Sunday lunch' lull you in to a false sense of security! It's all pre prepared food probably from a well known frozen food store which don't get me wrong there's nothing wrong with this if that's what you like, but at £9 for a main course is a bit of a con! Service was good, they were very welcoming and food was served pretty quickly but that does not make up for the plate of freezer food we were served! Might go back for a drink but certainly wouldn't go back for food! Lesson learnt?? Always go to Yelp for recommendations!!!!!

The staff refused to accept a voucher obtained from a charity event, explaining that the manager who issued it no longer works there and voucher is not signed. This felt unfair and unprofessional, as customers should not be penalized for internal staffing changes, especially when the voucher was received through a charitable event. Because of the way this situation was handled, the overall experience was negative and left us dissatisfied.

They can make something veggie for you but it will not overwhelm you. I prefer the more ordinary bar food. They have very nice rooms and packages. They have an extensive restaurant serving meals all day either from the specials board, carvery or lunch / evening menu. There's a great choice in food - veggies are well catered for and the fish dishes are very popular. I've been here on several occasions and the restaurant is usually busy and always very ably managed by Sonja the landlady. The prices are about average; £4 for a starter and £7.25 for lasagne with salad and garlic ciabatta but there are also sometime lunchtime special deals. All the staff here are very friendly, polite and accommodating and the atmosphere is homely and hospitable. There's some entertainment in the evenings and all you can eat buffets on Thursdays are only £9.95 per person and run alternately with Indian and Mexican food.
