In fact it is one of the nicest places I've been to in the Bristol/Bath area. So there. The pretty stone building covered in creeper sits in the centre of the tiny village of Kelston, right on the roadside. You know it'll be good, and you're not disappointed. Duck inside the door and you're faced with two bars serving several small but characterful rooms draped with hops and flagstone floors. Beers are as expected - Bath Ales and Ashton Press ciders amongst others. I didn't eat there - but the sizes of the sarnies being brought out from the kitchen sure looked spectacular - we're talking doorstopper of thick cheddar and pickle. Actually, I wish I did eat there and I'm going back.... For summery days there's a secluded back garden, where you can't even hear the main road.

Our so called "booking" was for 12.30 and we received our abjectly awful, straight out of a packet, food 2 hours later, after chasing up and complaining 3 times to staff who were frankly untrained and unfriendly, nobody in the establishment seemed to care less that food simply was not coming to tables, or that the three young children at our table were going demented with hunger, staff as far as I could tell were limited only to dropping off plates every so often and glass collecting as nobody in the several hours we were there even spoke to us or acknowledged our existence, the ridiculous system in place meant a half an hour queue if you wanted more drinks with your meal or to even speak to anyone about the problem. The adjacent table in the conservatory with us had the exact same experience, having booked for a birthday, waited several hours for food and been arrogantly dismissed whenever they tried to address this with staff. Sadly this pub is now clearly being run as a money grabbing tourist trap given their stunning riverside location, who having had your money off you as you order, simply could not care less about the rest of your experience, the quality of the food or service. It is frankly an insult and exploitative that they take "bookings" and do absolutely nothing to honour them. A birthday meal with family ruined, not only would I avoid ever coming back to this once decent pub I would also advise everyone I know in the local area never to bother. I left feeling as if I'd been mugged.

The atmosphere is warm and cosy and as the building has many original features still in tact it also gives of a certain country pub charm. The business is split into the two traditional sections of a bar/ bar eating areas and a more formal restaurant area. Food here is mostly traditional based country pub food with a few hidden gems. The savoury eccles cake is amazingly tasty and well worth a try if it's available on your visit. Meal sizes are just right and the selection of local ales is good. The service was friendly, fast and efficient (really couldn't have asked for better).

We arrived for a rather early dinner and although there were a number of people in the pub area with drinks and snacks, the dining area we were seated in was empty. There seem to be several different dining areas in this establishment. The one we were seated in had six tables with a library motif overlooking the deck above the river. Very cozy with old photos of rowing teams, a fireplace and heavy woodwork. The menu contains a variety of choices from around the world. Our selections included chicken curry and a roasted vegetable pizza. The curry arrived on a bed of rice with a side of an apple sauce, naan bread and potatoes. In my mind it seemed an odd combination, two carbs, no veg and apple sauce. It made a filling meal minus the apple sauce which was not to my dining companions liking (fruit). The pizza crust was a bit under cooked and over all the pizza did not have much flavor. There were a lot of textures with the variety of vegetables and a good deal of cheese over all. I do like a fresh tasting tomato sauce that stands on it's own and perhaps the combination of ingredients on top hid the quality of the sauce. In any event, it all came down to the crust for me - it just didn't hold up in taste or texture. I found out after dinner it was 'pizza day' which entitled me to a free dessert. Yea! I ordered the brownie and swapped the menu ice cream for a vanilla then added an Amaretto accompaniment. The waitress mentioned Amaretto is not commonly ordered and she had to check if they carried it. The brownie was warm and satisfyingly rich. The restaurant itself is lovely. The waitstaff, very nice. They offer free wi-fi (password on a sign at the bar). If you have time for a leisurely meal and want a bit of menu variety, or a seat by the river, this could by your spot. Word of warning though. Every Saturday they offer some form of "entertainment". Not sure what this is as I didn't go on a Saturday night. But they do have a Cabaret Night the last Friday of each month that I'm aware of. And a Karaoke night the first Tuesday of each month apparently. Now, your enjoyment of such evenings will largely depend on what you're looking for in a restaurant. They can make something veggie for you but it will not overwhelm you. I prefer the more ordinary bar food. They have very nice rooms and packages.
