I have eaten at the New Inn for a number of years, mostly the carvery on Sunday, which used to be excellent. It seems that the pub changed hands a while ago and the quality has gone down hill and the prices have risen.
Giving the benefit of doubt we went for a meal at the New Inn today and we were bitterly disappointed with what we received. It is worth saying that the fish part of the award winning fish and chips mentioned on the billboard was excellent. It was a shame that the fish was served with barely microwaved peas and oven chips that had been fried more than once, but without actually fully cooking the chips through. We also ordered the chicken and mushroom pie, pondering what it was about the pie that justified it's higher price than the steak pie. The pie when served was a slightly bizarre reinvention of the term pie, it was a disk of puff pastry with a small chicken breast on top. Once baked enough to cause the edges of the pastry to rise, but not such that it browns at all, they pour over a spoonful of stodgy mushroom sauce. The overall effect is tasteless, dry and thoroughly unpleasant. I have never written a review about, well anything to be honest, but my sister, who had the anaemic pie was adamant that I did not complain as she worries about sending food back.
Overall I am just disappointed that a pub that has a good atmosphere and used to be a default stop off for my family and I has allowed standards to fall to this extent. I don't mind cheap food, if it's cheap, but I get really offended at paying £10 a plate for a ready meal. read more
