Better Than Prison Food (Low Bar, But They Clear It) Is this a spot you're going to break out of your way to visit? Probably not. But if you're already in the area and craving BBQ, you could do worse -- and there's a certain irony in "doing worse" being the operative phrase here. It absolutely gets props for atmosphere -- this place fully commits to the old State Pen vibe, and if you're already doing the Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary tour, it's a solid stop to refuel. Just don't expect to be writing home to Mama about a life-changing meal. This is food that does its time, gets the job done, and doesn't ask for parole. It's edible. That's the sentence, and there's no appealing it. We tried the smoked turkey platter and the pulled pork sandwich -- both fine, no complaints, no complaints filed. The sides were fine too, but I wasn't dreaming about them that night, and I definitely wasn't nudging my husband to break back in for round two. That said, I wouldn't rule out a return visit either, if we were hungry and happened to be in the vicinity. No harm, no foul, no escape attempt necessary. The beer, though? It's definitely a novelty to eat here...don't eat here for the food because it's horrible. Probably a step above prison food. I got a smash burger and it wasn't as good as a Wendy's fast food burger. No flavor at all. Couldn't even tell if they actually cooked it or just heated it up. Came with the most average fries ever and a sub-par tasting cookie and a tiny slice of watermelon. It's counter service so you stand in line for one register behind dozens of people who don't know what they want and need to ask what type of cheese is on the burger. You then pay and wait for them to call your order number which is somewhat random....89...75...93...100...for real. My burger took way longer than I would have expected and friends with more complicated food that ordered after me got served first.... The only cool thing is the jail cells where you can eat. Kind of fun. There's a small cell with a single table that gets claimed fast. Other than that nothing. I would not eat here again. Is is connected to the gift shop where you buy tickets to the Penitentiary and there's also a Moonshine Distillery which is worth doing. read more

This was a fantastic detour on my way from Knoxville to Nashville. Beautiful scenery on approach, comfortable inside dining area and a great back patio when the weather is nice. Staff were welcoming and helpful, you order at the counter and wait for your number to come out. Adult beverages in cans, delicious ribs, I especially loved the Cole slaw with a light sweet vinegar base and red peppers. Portions were very share-able. Such high expectations were had for Warden's Table but, it fell a bit short. The hours listed on the website were not accurate. I came back later when they were supposed to be open--after 11AM--only for them to still not be open. There was even a line waiting. Next, it came across like customers weren't exactly a highlight of the day and made for a bit of a dampened atmosphere. Took most of my food to-go. The food itself was not as I had seen in other reviews. My baked beans and macaroni n' cheese were watery--that was a major disappointment. The pulled pork BBQ was barely warm. Food at Warden's Table in the historic Brushy Mountain tourist attraction is much better than the food I had at the Rutherford County, TN, Adult Detention Center. Food at the Detention Center comprised of mushy canned beans, watery mashed potatoes and cornbread. I was not detained at either facility. Brushy Mountain was a tourist attraction and the Adult Detention Center was a planned visit as part of community leadership training program. There was a unique beer, a honey rye ale that was worth the price. I had 1/2 rack of ribs and they were perfect, according to a celebrity presenter on a TV show. The meat did not fall off the bone, and it only took a little prodding. It had great flavor. I liked the pasta salad. It came with a few slices of watermelon and a chocolate chip cookie! My friend enjoyed his smoked turkey sandwich. The fried pickles were very disappointing. They appeared burnt slightly. My friend used to run a restaurant and he said it was because they did not change the fry oil soon enough. It was fun eating in there, but it was a bit expensive. read more

Great food! The food at the Warden's Table was great and moderately priced. I got the nachos and my husband got the brisket sandwich. The girl at the register didn't seem to be thrilled she was there. I asked what was in the Convict Caviar and she pointed to a had written sign and said, "that", she had clearly been asked that a time or two. The food more than made up for it. This is at Brushy Mountain Penitentiary in the gift shop. Great choices for food. I had the pulled pork sandwich with mac and cheese. The sandwich was great. The mac and cheese was ok, would try another side. They do give you a cookie. We also got pork nachos and pork baked potato. The decor inside is great. There was a local dog hanging out and was the calmest dog ever. We would definitely go back when in the area. I was surprised that they serve beer also. read more

Brushy Mtn. Penitentiary has been closed for many years and is now open as a tourist attraction, restaurant, and moonshine distillery brand named "End of the Line"... We ate there yesterday for the 2nd time, and the food is always great. This time we had Brisket sandwich, curly fries, Club sandwich, Convict Caviar, and a baked potato stuffed with pulled BBQ pork. Each entree was served with a cookie and slice of watermelon. Service is very fast and friendly, and the restaurant and adjoining gift shop, tasting stations, and restrooms spotless. The food prices are very reasonable and it's a beautiful drive through the mountains. Just be aware that cell phone services is sporadic. read more

The food was good. We went today on a Sunday. The line was not bad at 11:45-12:00 but by 12:30 it was huge so get there early. We had a group of four. I had Cuban wrap and it was good but nothing to brag about. 1 person had Turkey wrap and it was good. 1 had smoked Turkey and provolone sandwich and it was good. 1 had bbq plat and it was good. BBQ was very good. Potato salad definitely a thumbs up. Pasta salad was under or over cooked. Tough but good flavor. Nachos and loaded potatoes looked killer and the beer was ice cold. While on the site touring The Brushy Mountain State Penitentiary, we decided to experience it all and grab a bite to eat at The Warden's Table. I would call it more cafateria like then restaurant although not really either. Sandwiches, BBQ, and Sides. Sometimes they have Burgers but it's a changing menu and they aren't always an option. The atmosphere is open and unique. You're surrounded by bars to give it that prison feel. I had the Smoked Bologna and Pepper Jack Sandwich with Mac and Cheese. My Wife and Mother in Law went with the Club Sandwich and what looked like Arby's Curly Fries. All meals came with a Watermelon wedge and a Chocolate chip cookie. The food was nothing special but nothing to complain about either. A good option for a bite if you happen to be taking the prison tour. Not a place I would drive to specifically for the food though. read more

We were on our way back from being at the local National Park and searched for a local restaurant and picked here due to the previous reviews. It did not disappoint! This is a great smoked meat restaurant. I had the pork platter with green beans potato salad. HUGE serving of perfectly smoked pork butt. Very juicy and flavorful, though could have a used at least a little rub. Nothing a little salt and pepper couldn't fix. The green beans were not straight out of a can and were homemade. If they were from a can, they didn't taste like it. The potato salad was also great. My wife had the Cuban wrap, which was also an excellent choice. Also it was stuffed full of smoked pork, cheese and pickles. You will not go away hungry, plus, you get a bonus free chocolate chip cookie for desert. This gets a rare 5 star Yelp review from me. Cool place to eat while at the old prison. The food is good and price is decent around $10 for most items and most are bbq. Love the layout! Order ur food,have a seat and they call ur name when ready. Assorted beers to pick from as well as soda. I do recommend doing a guided tour not self guided. U get more info than reading signs. PS. Our off-road group really likes the Warden's Table. The food is very good and the prices are reasonable. We always plan our trip around the Brushy Mountain schedule. We like being able to drive our side-by-sides from WindRock through the trails and then onto Highway 116 to get to the prison. It's always a nice trip. We like taking new riders over for both the self-guided tours and the Warden's Table. Never had a bad experience. Also, restrooms have always been very clean and uncrowded. Just wish they were open all week and all year. Otherwise we love it. read more

After touring the prison (which was AMAZING), my husband & I decided to have supper. The line was long but moved fairly quickly. My hubby had the smoke turkey sandwich which he enjoyed. I had the rack of ribs & have to say, some of the best I've ever had - fall off the bone with bbq sauce in the side. Potato salad sure looked homemade & the choc chip cookie was a nice touch. The prison tour is great but pass on the Warden's Table. They were sold out of most items and I settled for the pulled pork. The pork was sloppy wet and tasted like it had been heated up in a steamer. Walking the short distance from the food pickup to table resulted in the corn fritter being a complete sloppy mess. The drink machine was out of ice and the labeled sweet tea was actually unsweet. read more

A nice little restaurant next to the penitentiary. It has multiple options (although they are mainly centered around smoked meats). We got the smoked turkey wrap and a burger. The burger was alright but the smoked turkey wrap was really good. We also had some of their criminal caviar which was awesome! Each of our meals was served with a slice of watermelon and a cookie too so there was plenty for us. read more
