Also across the street is Dune Bros, so when you visit Rose Larisa, you can get some clam cakes & chowder and go eat in the park with a water view. I especially like the wooden staircases that take you down to the water. Although the beach is not very wide, it is long enough for a walk and leashed dogs are allowed on the beach as well. Rose Larisa is a great place to watch the sunset, and there is plenty of free parking. This park also is home to the annual RI Folk Festival and the city of East Providence also presents summer concerts here so go check out some local live music! I absolutely love this waterfront park.

Deerfield is a beautiful town park with so many memorials and things to do. I enjoy the walking…read morepaths - there are paved paths around the playgrounds, the Senior Center, and by the memorials, and I especially like the wooded cross country paths. For the kids, there are two playgrounds - one for toddlers and one for older kids. It's really nice that the toddler playground is fenced to protect the children from cars. There is also a splash pad during the summer and children really seem to love this new addition to the park. For sports fans, there are soccer fields, tennis courts, a baseball field and a basketball court. Recently a disc golf course was added as well. The park is really pretty in the spring with numerous flowering trees, and it is well maintained. There are bathrooms, plenty of parking areas, a snack bar that is often open during sporting events, and the Smithfield Senior Center is in Deerfield Park as well. The memorials at Deerfield are beautiful and are definitely worth a stop while visiting the park. The Veteran's memorial is lovely and there is a very touching memorial to Smithfield young people who have passed on. Lots of benches to relax on, a gazebo, and many shaded places. There's also a small sledding hill for young children, and a larger hill for those who are more adventurous. Deerfield is also used for summer outdoor concerts, food truck nights and the Smithfield 4th of July fireworks. Love this park!

There are several trash receptacles inside the playground as well. There are several large unmarked fields, used for soccer, rugby, baseball, etc. The fields have lush green grass, are free from dog poop, and are surrounded by a metal fence the whole way around. There are no goal posts or field markings. The baseball field has some bases set up and a lackluster dugout. Suitable for children's games. The playground is dated with older plastic play structures, but mostly clean and very safe. There are various climbing structures, 4 regular swings, 1 baby swing, 1 giant plastic seat swing and 2 slides. There are wood chips and mulch (no grass or dirt) at the playground. There is also a semi clean, non-muddy sand box with old toys that seem to live there. The playground is enclosed by a metal fence. Sessions Street Garden is behind the playground. Community members grow whatever they like, seasonally. There is a lock on the gate into the garden.

Situated between lovely old residential homes and the grounds of Hope High School, this space has much to offer. The typical jungle gym activities, sandbox, and traverse-the-netting areas are all done very nicely. Add to that a legitimate climbing and gymnastics ring area, and you have something a cut above. Add to THAT a lovely community garden area, and you begin to get the picture of Brown Street Park. This spot transcends "so nice I want to keep it to myself" status into "this Providence jewel is so good, the word needs to be spread." Please enjoy!

It does not have a lot of shade, but it has a lot of fun things for kids and grown ups to keep busy. I make it part of my routine walk along the East Side since it is well maintained, clean and safe. Cabral Park is one of those Providence places that I have a bit of a soft spot for. I used to bring…read moremy nephews here when they were younger, and some of my memories of the park come from those days. It was always an easy place to bring kids when you wanted them to run around, burn off some energy, and spend a little time outside without having to make a whole production out of it. The park has definitely seen better days, though. There is a lot to like about the location and what the park can offer, but parts of it have looked worn and in need of some attention for quite a while. That's why I'm encouraged by the improvements and renovation work that have started to take shape. Providence has been putting more attention into improving its neighborhood parks, and Cabral Park is a place where that investment makes sense. What I like about neighborhood parks like this is that they don't need to be some elaborate destination. They serve the people who live nearby. Kids need somewhere to play, families need somewhere to get outside, and neighborhoods benefit enormously from having accessible green space. Cabral Park has that basic value, even when the facilities themselves could use some TLC. I have to admit that seeing improvements happening here gives me a little bit of nostalgia. I remember bringing my nephews here and watching them run around, and now I'm seeing the park enter another chapter. That's the nice thing about public spaces. They change, they get worn down, they get renovated, and eventually a new generation of kids comes along and makes their own memories there. I'm giving Cabral Park four stars because I think it has plenty of potential, but it still needs some investment and continued maintenance to really reach it. I'm hopeful that the current renovation work is the beginning of a larger transformation rather than a one-and-done effort. If Providence follows through, this could become an even better neighborhood park for the families who use it. For me, though, the place already has some history. I spent time here with my nephews years ago, and I'm glad to see the city giving the park some attention. I'll be interested to come back and see what it looks like once the work is finished.

Took advantage of the sunny weather last Thursday and headed out for a short hike at Esek Hopkins…read morePark in Scituate, RI. I was aiming for a longer walk, but with the temps suddenly hitting 90°, my body tapped out early. Ended up doing about 1.2 miles of unique trail and re-looped a couple of sections to stretch it out. The trail was dry but narrow in spots, winding through what felt like a fern city - fields of them everywhere. I also noticed lots of tiny flowering plants scattered along the way, which made the scenery even better. Definitely bring bug spray though, the dense growth makes it prime mosquito territory. Trailhead starts next to a baseball field, with a large dedicated parking area and a playground nearby. I couldn't resist wrapping things up with a quick swing on the swingset. The park borders Providence Water Reservoir land and some private property, so keep an eye out for signage. I passed a few classic New England stone walls and even a small quarry area with leftover stones still showing old tool marks. A few trail signs are posted throughout the loop, but it's mostly easy to follow. A short, scenic trail, great for a quick nature fix, especially if you're local.
