The park also has a Skate Bowl and Pump Track for skateboarders and bikers, and a parkour area for those looking for a more adventurous playground! A lot of kids come here to skate, so it's becoming more of a Skate Park than a green space, walkable park...even though there are 0.2 miles of paths for walking. Still there are nice places to relax away from the skate park.... This park was formerly a soccer field, but was rededicated in 1997 to Father John Lennon, a Dominican reverend who grew up near the park and was an active community leader. The statue of Ambrose Burnside on a horse is a grand one and can't be missed; the park was named after this Civil War general and governor of Rhode Island. Fun fact: he was the first person to rock a side burn, hence the name Burnside. Both the fountain and statue were added to the park in the late 1800s and early 1900s. There were bus stops all around the park. Many people were enjoying it and walking through. Cons: I did notice that there were trash all over; some of the people using the park just trashes it. I am not sure why this was the case because I saw trash bins throughout the city. Otherwise, the park would be very beautiful, historic, and in the middle of a bustling city.

When you see the sign for Steven Olney Park make sure to turn in. The playground itself is older, and some of the equipment is starting to show rust, but overall, it is still in decent shape. It is not a very large playground, but it is not extremely small either. The playground is enclosed by a gated fence, although it does not have a double-fenced entrance--there is only one fence line. The ground is covered with grass turf, which is nice because it provides a softer surface if the kids fall. However, the three smaller slides for younger children were not very enjoyable. I'm not sure if it was the material of the slides, but the kids seemed to get stuck in the middle instead of sliding all the way down. There are also only two baby swings. Overall, I would say this playground is better suited for children around three years old and up. While we were there, there was also a strong smell of marijuana. A few adults were sitting just outside the playground area smoking. I understand that it is legal, but I would expect people to use some common sense and avoid smoking around small children. There was also some empty trash left around, which was confusing because there was a trash can located right outside the playground. Unfortunately, this will probably be a one-time visit for us.

They have a nice selection of skateboards for sale and they also do local maintenance on them. Civil was created by Guido Silvestri and Rob Asselin in 2006. After many years of working in retail, the two founders imagined a store concept outside the realm of the traditional skate/snowboard/surf shop. The vision was realized in 2007 when the first Civil location opened in East Greenwich Rhode Island. Since then they added stores in Providence and Westerly Rhode Island.....this particular one is on Westminster St, Providence downtown. Their product mix at each one of their stores varies to suite the three distinct locations: in the city (Providence), on main street (EG), and by the beach (Westerly). Civil also has a private label collection and they have been honored to collaborate on projects with elite brands including Nike SB and SLVDR. They support local ripping skateboarders and snowboarders, including the notorious Yawgoons. Since they opened, Civil has been involved in the local skateboard and snowboard community by hosting and sponsoring contests, demos, park cleanups, video premiers, and other cultural events. This is what we need more of! Ways for the local community to get where they need to go that doesn't require getting into a car! It has been proven when safe biking options are available, more people will ride their bikes and I definitely support efforts for biking and walking safely in cities. Have you been to cities where some of the streets are free of cars, for pedestrian use only? Don't you just love those areas? I know I do. These pathways serve local residents, help reduce dependence on fossil fuel vehicles and offer green spaces much needed in a city environment. The pathway uses brown and green signs to keep you on track, sidewalk space, surface roads in mostly residential areas and designated pathways. There are greenscaped areas along the way for sitting/resting and on the day we walked part of the pathway, most of these areas were being utilized. If you are not local to the bike path, and would like to drive part of your commute, and bike the rest, there are parking areas on Aleppo Street in Providence and Hillside Ave in Johnston.
