This is an amazing bit of nature and recreation, right in Providence. In the summer there's a Wednesday farmer's market from 3-6, and there are frequent weekend concerts at the top of the hill. There are also a sledding hill, baseball diamonds and a skate park at the base. I come here for the hiking. For being only 10 minutes from downtown providence, it's very impressive. It's small, just shy of 90 acres, but the trail network is fantastic. The views of Providence from the top of the hill and the vista are great. There's a map at the entrance to the park, I usually just do one big loop when I visit. There's a trail map you can print out on the website as well. This is an urban park, so litter can be a problem. Please do your part and bring your trash out with you.

It's hard to forgot that you're in the middle of a city between the sites, sounds, and random debris like old cars, but there's no other trail system like it nearby. And some of the views are truly stunning. Great for kids, great for dogs, and in winter there's one helluva sledding hill. That said, there's a lot of trash up there. There are a few glorious stretches of pure nature, but there's a whole lotta unkempt concrete, too. And trails aren't well marked or maintained. For trail variation I like it better than Lincoln Woods. But for real woods it's better to get out of the city boundaries.

I had no idea this place existed and I'm so glad I found it. It really is a hidden gem right in the middle of the city. It is by no means an easy hike. I would categorize it as hard easy to easy intermediate if that even makes sense. We completed probably about 75% of the trails and were done in about an hour and 15 minutes. It's quite hilly and rocky which is both beautiful and a workout. The view overlooking the city at the top put a smile on our faces. My six year old son conquered it even if there was a little whining involved. It had character and the trails were fairly well marked in that you stopped and questioned a couple of times but not enough so that this nervous nelly couldn't figure her way out. I really enjoyed the bridges and boardwalks even if they weren't warranted today since it was so dry. The Mosquitos were ravenous even with our tripled layer of bug spray, but it was definitely an enjoyable afternoon.

They have a nice selection of skateboards for sale and they also do local maintenance on them. Civil was created by Guido Silvestri and Rob Asselin in 2006. After many years of working in retail, the two founders imagined a store concept outside the realm of the traditional skate/snowboard/surf shop. The vision was realized in 2007 when the first Civil location opened in East Greenwich Rhode Island. Since then they added stores in Providence and Westerly Rhode Island.....this particular one is on Westminster St, Providence downtown. Their product mix at each one of their stores varies to suite the three distinct locations: in the city (Providence), on main street (EG), and by the beach (Westerly). Civil also has a private label collection and they have been honored to collaborate on projects with elite brands including Nike SB and SLVDR. They support local ripping skateboarders and snowboarders, including the notorious Yawgoons. Since they opened, Civil has been involved in the local skateboard and snowboard community by hosting and sponsoring contests, demos, park cleanups, video premiers, and other cultural events. The staff is young and very hip. Mostly guys in their 20s that love skateboarding, so they know their stuff when asked questions. I went to check the prices of a few sneakers and they were very helpful in regards to the differences among them.

This is what we need more of! Ways for the local community to get where they need to go that doesn't require getting into a car! It has been proven when safe biking options are available, more people will ride their bikes and I definitely support efforts for biking and walking safely in cities. Have you been to cities where some of the streets are free of cars, for pedestrian use only? Don't you just love those areas? I know I do. These pathways serve local residents, help reduce dependence on fossil fuel vehicles and offer green spaces much needed in a city environment. The pathway uses brown and green signs to keep you on track, sidewalk space, surface roads in mostly residential areas and designated pathways. There are greenscaped areas along the way for sitting/resting and on the day we walked part of the pathway, most of these areas were being utilized. If you are not local to the bike path, and would like to drive part of your commute, and bike the rest, there are parking areas on Aleppo Street in Providence and Hillside Ave in Johnston. You can check out the website at http://www.dot.ri.gov/travel/bikeri/woonasquatucket.php for more information. Now, "Get on your bike and ride!" (Queen: Fat Bottomed Girls)
