Gano Park is about 10 acres in size and it includes ball fields, a soccer field, basketball courts,…read morea community garden, a dog park, and a bike path, which was installed in 2017. The community garden, built in the 1990s, marks the first community garden in a Providence park. The baseball field is home to the East Side-Fox Point Little League and the softball field was once home to the world famous fast-pitch softball team Local 57, a semi-professional team of operating engineers named for the union located on Gano Street. The mural on the ballfield was created by local artist, Jay West. Since the banks of the Seekonk River once came up to Gano Street, the park sits on land fill that the city put down in the early 20th century. The basketball court complex is named after well revered community activist, John "Johnny" Britto. Johnny devoted his life to helping the youth in the community and greater Providence, particularly through his work at the Fox Point Boys & Girls Club. It's a nice play to watch the kids play sports or just to stroll around the river, nice area....

There are a lot of concrete steps that can be used for seating and quite a lot of vantage points for the fire show. I wish we could have come here to see WaterFire, but we happened to come during a time when it was off for a few weeks. The area itself is quite pleasant, with a good amount of shade and space. There are also quite a few things to do in the area, like the riverwalk if you just want to stroll outside or the mall, which is right across the street.

There are a lot of shady places to sit and a lot of nice things to look at. The park itself isn't very large and there isn't much "to do" but you can read the plaques and see where the church used to be. There's a good amount of seating though so we liked using it as a respite from walking. There is a super cute garden in the back that seems a little attached to someone's house, but it is in the parking lot so you can walk right up to it.

This parcel had originally been a church, and was turned into a park in the 1960s. According to legend, Lovecraft based "The Haunter of the Dark" on this original, but now gone St John's Baptist Church. The park holds many different neighborhood vendor events throughout the year, so people can reserve it for weddings, festivals, celebrations, etc.... During the night, uplighting was added to the trees to enhance the plaza nighttime ambiance and visibility. There is a Verrazzano marker here which came from the downtown Memorial Park,

The swings are a great addition, and I use the bike path and walking paths there frequently. As the weather gets better, I'm looking forward to spending more time there. It's always nice to grab a coffee from somewhere on Wickenden and set up in the park for a bit to enjoy the water and the people.

A park on a point…read more Sabin Point Park is a roughly five acre park that is indeed on a point of land that juts out into the Providence River. The river is almost a mile wide in this area so the park has great views in almost all directions. The park has made improvements over the years and now has a nice playground, basketball court and paved walking paths. It always has a nice fishing pier and launch site for small boats. Since the river is so wide here the water can get pretty feisty for a kayak or canoe and it's more like open ocean than a river. Plus the river has a huge amount of traffic, from large tankers and freighters to numerous fishing boats of all sizes. The park is a lovely park to see the sun rise or set or to just sit and watch all the boat traffic go by. A cool place, especially for people that want to feel they are on the water without ever leaving the land.

There is an abundance of seashells along the water line, and it is very easy to get down on the beach to collect them. There's also a playground for kids, basketball courts, picnic tables, a walking path, and plenty of parking. Definitely worth a stop when in the Riverside section of East Providence.

Providence's oldest dedicated public space, it is little understood as a political statement rejecting Rhode Island's religious freedom and expressing a longing to emulate the theocratic Massachusetts model. Perceived and used as a public space, it is still owned and maintained by Beneficent Congregational Church. I have walked by many times and enjoyed the nice peaceful setting of this cute little park in downtown Providence.

There's also a…read morespacious green which in the winter was quite deserted but could be a nice spot for a picnic or game of frisbee in the summer. Very odd objects of interest including an intricate sculpture honoring Christopher Columbus and a white canon. It would be nice if they had some more peaceful artworks like maybe sculptures depicting the natural world instead of these things, but views are very nice. Plenty of parking and several trash bins. There was also a historical sign detailing the industrial history of Bristol which included rubber, aluminum and marine vessels.

Soccer baseball and a…read more river River Point Park is one of those park that looks a bit rough around the edges. Hard to explain exactly why but even though they are trees and everything is pretty clean this is one of those parks that just isn't very attractive. I suspect that are the right time of day or year the park is very well used. Some very well maintained soccer and baseball fields are scattered about as well as basketball courts, a small skateboard park and a gazebo picnic area. Certainly lots to do and it even though not many people were around when I went, It looks like this park is a place that people utilize. There even is a riverwalk on the side of the park with a nice entrance and memorial. The walk does indeed go down to a river but seems very rough and overgrown. The river itself isn't exactly breath taking and I suspect many of the large mills and factories in the area spent many years dumping all kinds of nasty stuff in the water. I'm not sure how far or where the riverwalk goes because it got to infested with thorns and prickers and tall grass. Kind of gives the impression that it isn't somewhere I would want to be a night. This is one of those strange parks that doesn't grab your eye and don't expect something beautiful or aesthetically pleasing. This is a very practical, useful and fun park that is much cooler than it first looks.

We parked at the W.W. Greenway lot on Jr Street and started walking to the east. A sign along the…read moretrail indicates the River walk is 'that way', so we turned left at the crosswalk on Hay Street and followed the road to McCarthy Field. There, on the right side of the field, is the entrance to the Senator Donald E. Roch River Walk. The upper area next to the field is flat, paved and lined with shrubs and on this spring day, crocus. Walk under a wooden arch and the path turns to scree and takes a deep dive down. Chose your steps carefully here. Once at the bottom of this hill, the path becomes mulch covered. It has rained recently and there are tire tracks on the trail leaving behind deep ruts filled with water. The first half of this lower level of the pathway was very uneven, strewn with plant debris and looks like it has recently had fresh mulch added here and there. It definitely looks like the trail is a work in progress. The hillside has been 'cleared' of underbrush leaving downed trees and plant debris. Some of the cleared material has been used to create landscaping breaks/retaining areas with the assistance of landscaping fabric. The path appears to have been leveled out and raised to keep it above water level. It's a nice wide trail and with a bit of leveling would make a very enjoyable pathway. Where the path first meets the river, there is a bench to sit and enjoy the view. Another bench is located toward the second half of the trail near a stone structure that may (or may not) have been a mill on the river. At one point there is a 'government building' and the path appears to end there in a heap of mulch, but on the right is a small pathway between trees going toward the river. Once over this short rise, the path opens up again. This section is more 'natural', no mulch. The entire trail runs parallel to the river. Further along the trail you come to a police training facility. Here the path splits. To the right it continues to follow the river for a short distance before heading up a steep incline where it ends. The left branch runs close to the building and is covered in a similar scree material as the beginning. These two paths come out within feet of each other on the opposite side of the field. IMO, this trail is not accessible to strollers or wheelchairs of any type. The beginning and end are too steep, the mulched area uneven and the later section unpaved with roots in places. Even though the mulched pathway was wet in many places, and I almost tripped a couple of times on debris, I actually enjoyed this walk. The sound of the river is very nice and the trees along the river provide shade and plenty of habitat for wild life. It's a short walk and made a very nice change of pace from the bike path nearby. A nice natural get-away in an urban environment.
