Ambrose Burnside statue, Burnside Park, Providence
    Bruce K.

Burnside Park is in surprisingly good condition considering the amount of foot traffic and urban activity going on in neighboring Kennedy Plaza. The park is named for Ambrose Burnside, a general in the American Civil War from Rhode Island who later served as as the Governor of Rhode Island from 1866 to 1869, and as a United States Senator for Rhode Island from 1875 until his death in 1881. An equestrian statue was erected in Burnside's honor in 1887 (and restored in 2015) and sits in the center of the park. The centerpiece of the park is the Bajnotti Fountain, sculpted in 1902 by Enid Yandell. The park is the central area for protests including the Occupy Providence Movement (patterned after the Occupy Wall Street movement in New York City) during the Fall of 2011. We heard music emanating from somewhere in this park and decided to check it out. It turned out to be from a band participating in a peaceful, but boisterous Black Lives Matter rally. Among the park's amenities are a state of General Burnside who also served as the state's governor.

Stopped here with the kids while on vacation. Fun park. Great climbing structures for older kids. My young teen son enjoyed climbing for over an hour. While we visited, several teenage groups visited the park. Great place to visit. There was also a lot of activity in the other areas of the park. A roller derby team was skating in the hockey rink. In the area? Be sure to visit.

A park in the city A little park right in the middle of downtown Providence across from the bus station. It's named after General Burnside of Civil War fame. Infamy might be a better word because Burnside's military career was less than distinguished. His most notable achievements included various creative excuses, apologises and offers to resign. President Lincoln finally put a gentle foot up his butt and Burnside's military was over. Even though Burnside was also an inventor and politician he's probably more famous for his funky facial hair, now called sideburns, than anything else. The park is small but quite pleasant. There is a huge and highly ornate fountain on one end and a huge stature of Burnside on a horse on the other. The fountain is pretty cool and you can frequently see rainbows from the refracting light through the water. Lots of benches and trash cans in the area and not too many bums or crazy people to harass you. In fact the people here are usually quite friendly and I have had some interesting conversations with people at this park. I found that people that drink heavily tend to have interesting if somewhat suspect stories to relate. Burnside is not a park worth traveling out of your way to see, but if you are in Providence shopping, have business downtown or just enjoy loitering around old bus stations it's worth a quick visit.

I love this park. Fantastic statues, in the middle of the busiest part of the city. There is always something happening on the periphery...
