I really like this place because of their music and they have really good lighting that makes for a nice cozy atmosphere. Their happy hour drink specials in my opinion are reasonably priced. My best friend and I often go to this bar and it never disappoints. From the very first day, I absolutely loved this place. The mood here is phenomenal and hard to come across in many other places. At night, the music is lively but chill and the lighting drifts you off into another place. Yesterday I came here during the day for the first time and fell in love with the mellow jazz, as the soft light peeked through the front doors. Delightful. Long story short, their music day and night is always on point and whoever designed the place really took into consideration how lighting and design affect people's mood. Off to the drinks... My favorites are: Bali Breeze, The Geisha, The Mai Tai and the Mango Mojito. These drinks never disappoint. Some of the drinks on the right side of the menu are too bitter for me, but some people are into that - it is a matter of personal taste. Yesterday I tried the drinks on their Happy Hour menu(4-7pm): Coco Mojito, Bee's Knees, Moscow Mule and the Mango Margarita. ALL of them were well-balanced and made to perfection. I like Wangs! (That's what she said) Actually I did say it! And Wangs is secksy as hickory heck! I've come several times in less than a week and that's saying something! The atmosphere has been compared to an opium den. It reminds me of an old school speakeasy in the far east with a dash of bordello. Just classic, exotic, sexy. It's truly a unique lounge that can't be compared to others. Tons of Asian touches, dark, lanterns and candles galore, fog, incense, ambiant music that mixed jazz influences with house or trance (very cool), high ceilings, lots of art, lots of carvings, gilt touches, marble and dark wood, and sedate and stylish patrons. We like the music isn't so loud it drowns out intimate conversation. Adult and trendy in every way without being pretentious. And did I mention it's secksy? Well, it is. The service has generally been good. Cash only. No sign outside. Which is just another sign (pun optional) how low key and unique it is. They have dj sometimes. It's small; but that just adds to the cozy vibe. One menu for the bar that you read and return which is a cute touch. The pictures of nudy rudy statues of men showing wangs really fit the theme and made me blush. When I've gone I've ordered The Geisha. Cozy. Unique. Dark. Smoky (dry ice). Hot. Intimate. Inspiring. Wang's is where you go if you like your martinis so dirty you'll blush while drinking them. (To paraphrase an afficionado). The black Oriental wallpaper with birds on it makes the room feel even smaller, and like one is in San Francisco or Bangkok. Decorative Ornithology is totally hot. The bathroom is plastered with old porn, and even though at times I was crimson with comparison, it reminded me of one of my favorite unique bars in Austin (Beer Land). Cash only is the only drawback at Wang's. If I could lay my credit card down on the bar, chances are, my stays would be longer. But then again, the atmosphere is such that one hopes to be inspired to make an early night of it, and head for more intimate quarters. Hot. read more

Well, thanks to the event that happened here, I got to check this place out and meet some yelpers. I must say, any place that has good free food in addition to decently priced drinks (and creative margaritas) is a win in my book. It's directly connected to the sushi bar that is related, so the location is a little bit misleading. It's not really marked from a distance. Music choices are pretty good, the bartender was polite, and the company improved the night of course. They have a cool little layout, and a good selection of asian/ethnic sauces to go with the free food too. Overall, this is a very good chill spot. This is the 4th time that we have tried to stop by for a cocktail and have been turned away. Tonight, we were told we could have one last cocktail by the bus boy (at 9:45), only to have the waitress ultimately turn our business away. Like I said, this is the 4th time we have had our business turned away in the last 6 weeks. We live right around the corner. We are trying to do our best to support small neighborhood businesses but Wangs makes it impossible. (BTW: Sending us to Ping Pong across the street is NOT an alternative.) Very disappointed. Unfortunately, this negatively affects our opinion on Wangs, Ping Pong and Wakamono. The posted close time is 10pm. Prior to the pandemic, we were regulars. I like this place, especially for an after dinner drink and conversation. Me and some buddies went there this past Friday and we had a blast. ATMOSPHERE The space is small and intimate, we loved the atmosphere and asian-themed/tongue-n-cheek decor. I really like that Wang's has a lounge feel in a bar setting, which makes it perfect for chilling and chatting. There is a main bar, a dance floor (that opens around 1130pm-ish) and a few bistro tables/chairs. DRINKS Unlike a lot of places, I found the cocktails to be delicious and reasonably priced. On this particular night, it wasn't too crowded we didn't have to wait long for the bartender or for the cocktails to be made. Here's the breakdown: My friend and I arrived first... 1st: Gin (Bombay) and Tonic (I had two) = $8 & French 77 = $8 (my buddy had two). 2nd: We both tried the Cucumber Sake Martini = $9 (delicious) Two of our other friends joined and... 3rd: Fireball shots (my other friend paid and I forgot to ask how much) 4th: Back to Gin & Tonic (me and 2 friends) and Cucumber Sake Martini (friend) NOISE LEVEL We originally arrived around 930pm - there was music pumping but it didn't overpower our conversation. Around 11pm, the music volume increased so it was a bit harder to hear and "chat" you had to yell and stain to hear the person next or across from you. We didn't mind this though, because by this time more people had arrived and it was more lively (which is expected for a friday night). PS, the music was great! Energetic, fun and flavorful house music... without being annoying. OVERALL Wang's is a really cool space, with great drinks and a lively atmosphere. We stumbled over here after dinner and drinks elsewhere. I've walked past Wangs a hundred times and have never been in, until Friday. I think it's pretty hard to spot since they have no signage. But at any rate, upon walking in, I was expecting Mushu to come blazing down the rooftop on fireworks. I love the decor! And, it's the type of decor that you have to look at closely... This is a martini bar connected to Wakamono sushi. I used to love this place but they're starting to lose their personality. Back in the day, they had smoke machines going full blast, lighting so dark you could hardly see, and a bathroom with a bowl of condoms and walls covered in porn. Great place to go with friends. This review is long overdue. I've been to Wang's a bunch of times, I came here last Saturday for a few drinks to meet up with friends. The vibe of this place is very chill, it's a little small so it's not something I would recommend if you have a big group coz it can get crowded. Drink selections are good. I ordered the "Geisha" a little sweet but delicious, they've got wide selection of mixed drinks, wine and cocktails and food as well. There's a sushi restaurant next door which I believe they might be connected. First things first: despite the name, Wangs is not a gay bar. Though you will find gay men there, since it's in the middle of Boystown, and they may be playing tonsil hockey. I guess that's a warning. What Wangs is, is the bar portion of the restaurant Wakamono, though it functions perfectly well as a bar on its own. Wangs is one those place that, if you didn't know it was here, you wouldn't know it was here. The entrance is somewhat deceptive. There's no name, and the front door is covered with traces of what seem to be pulled down posters or handbills. The handbills that are still up advertise something called Wangs. Oh! You'll see that a lot of people who come in the door head immediately to the right, to go into Wakamono. Don't you do that. Instead, pull up a barstool and have a fabulous martini. No, you're absolutely right, they're not martinis at all -- they're vodka-based beverages served in a martini glass. But they're mighty tasty and fairly potent, and nicely garnished with fruit, flowers, and pomegranate seeds. Oh, maybe that's what they mean by a gay bar. The clientele isn't gay, the bar itself is! The decor is halfway between Japanese grandmother and opium den, and gives "over the top" a run for it's money. There's a lot of stuff shoved into not much space, but somehow it manages to avoid looking crass. Kitsch is more like it. If you get there before 9, you can enjoy a free mini-buffet of egg rolls, sesame chicken wings, and other delights. I've lived in Lakeview for almost 2 years now and support local businesses and encourage diversity within the neighborhood. Being refused service by a local establishment, due to my gender only, in my own backyard is making me think that this bar does not even want to support the diverse neighborhood that attempts to support it. Instead of going to Wang's, my friend and I brought our party of 2 to Sura in which the service was warm and friendly...total 180 from Wang's. They even gave us a shot upon our departure as a thank you to new customers (i live right down the street and had never been in...what a shame because I've been missing out on a great place!). His name is Loren and he is there to keep you coming back. So it's one street east and an obscure little spot denoted with an ornate Chinese door and windows covered in newspaper. I walked through the bar (about the size of a studio apartment) and felt along the wall for the door knob. Once inside the bathroom it hit me - WANGS. No, literally - I was visually barraged with image after image of dicks. They are plastered on all the walls, the door, the ceilings. It was dick for days and I had no idea why until halfway through my personal undertakings I saw the hook: "Send cock pics to: wangschicago@gmail.com" I was standing in a restroom covered in the genitalia of decades of former patrons. I stood in awe, thinking of how many men, like myself, were confused, curious, and then compelled to submit their dirty favorites so as to be immortalized on this... this wall of wieners! Then I wondered what all the women thought when they walked in there. The bar resembles an opium den - deep woods, ornate bar, it's pretty much totally red. There are a few small tables hidden in dark corners and, I can only assume, a lot of secrets hidden in the back-room. One of those joints that makes you feel like its midnight even when it's 3pm. They do have a few munchies available, however cash only on those my friends, so bring some green backs if you need to satisfy your munchies. Dark, exotic, glamorous; that's what Wang's makes me feel. Well, that and intoxicated every time I walk out. Hey, I can't help myself, the drinks are amazing. The bartender Derek is awesome. He makes a fantastic ginger martini and several of his own personal creations that are delicious. I love seeing Derek when I walk in because it takes the guess work out of drinking. I can just say "hmm, make me something with pineapple" and I get back a flawless concoction that makes the taste buds tingle and your brain a little fuzzy. I've never been disappointed in anything he's passed over the bar to me. My tips: go on week nights if you don't like crowds in small spaces.
