I cannot believe the things that Dr. Dembo-Smeaton said to me at my appointment today. I have never…read moreheard so many dangerously outdated comments and recommendations. 1. Upon hearing I have two little kids, she said, "Oh, so who helps you with the children?" When I replied, "My husband - he's great and has a flexible job so he takes on a lot of the kid stuff." She replied (and this is pretty darn close to verbatim): "Oh yes, it used to be that women could stay home and take care of the children. But not anymore. That was better." [This was especially confusing to me since Dr. Dembo-Smeaton obviously works, so I'm not sure why her bias against working mothers?!?!) 2. I asked for a referral to pelvic floor therapy since after my second delivery I had had the common issues with leaking while sneezing/laughing. She said I shouldn't be running at all and I should stop lifting heavy weights (I do the Body Pump class at the Y - not exactly Olympic bodybuilding). I told her that these are things I love doing, and I want to get treatment so that I can go back to enjoying doing the things I love without worry about peeing my pants. She looked at me condescendingly and said, "Well the important thing is that you have two beautiful children." And I replied, "Of course I appreciate my kids, but I also want to not have pelvic floor issues, and I want to run and lift weights ..." and she just doubled down and said, "Well after children things change and the important thing is that you have your family." or something like that. I was completely aghast. Are women not allowed to have a life and hobbies and be active post-delivery?! I couldn't believe how she just blew off my desire to exercise with a simple command to stop running and just appreciate my kids. 3. I asked for an updated birth control prescription now that I had finished breastfeeding. She asked what forms I'd used in the past and I said the ring and the pill, then she immediately said, "OK I will get you Nuvaring." When I replied that I wanted the pill instead, she said, "But the Nuvaring is so much easier!" Not sure why she needed to argue with me over MY preferred method of bc. 4. We were discussing losing weight and she advised, "if you want to lose weight you really need to just focus on cardio." This is such outdated and WRONG advice - it's well established that weight training is healthy and good for weight loss and good for preserving bone density, among other benefits.

Today I changed to a new PCP and experienced how thorough, professional, and quality care should look like. I was with Dr. Dembo-Smeaton the last two years and right off the bat she made me feel stupid. First time I met her, I came in with specific questions and she told me to calm down. I remember immediately shutting down. It was so bizarre as I was not hysterical, I was prepared with simple questions. I remember calling my partner and friends wondering if any of this was in any way normal. Insurance is difficult to work with, and I felt stuck. But I'm so happy with my new PCP. She identified basic things Dr. Dembo Smeaton should have addressed years ago. I was further validated in my decision to change PCPs when my current gynecologist was also taken aback when she heard my then PCP (Dembo Smeaton) wasn't following up with me post labs. That's when I realized I should be proactive and so very happy I did. We pay an insane amount for health insurance. We should receive quality care from empathetic doctors who are not only experts in their field but want to get to know their patients.

I was originally at Scripps for my initial diagnosis but I wanted the best surgeon for my case so I turned to Dr. Varon. During my consultation, she had looked through my MRI and identified fibroids that the radiologist and obgyn had missed at Scripps. I highly trust Dr. Varon's expertise and thoroughness with her work. Dr. Varon listened to my concerns and gave me the best path forward. She is a very skilled minimally invasive surgeon and successfully removed multiple large fibroids for me. I feel more like my old self again! Thank you Dr. Varon for the care you provided me.

It took 6 months to get the appointment and another 3 to have the surgery but I'm beyond happy with Dr Varon. She is a very pleasant person and a very competent doctor, in and out of surgery. I highly recommend her. She is very prompt with her communication and follow-up, and was always in a good mood with a nice reassuring smile every time I saw her. Most importantly for me, she listened to what was important to me and shaped the treatment plan accordingly. It's odd for me to provide a medical review but I do so in the hope Dr Varon can help you. She's truly fantastic. Post surgery follow up was also stellar and resulted in good referrals for me too. Thank you Dr Varon.

But this type of employee treatment from an Amazon owned company is not surprising. If you have medical insurance do not use them because they will bill you $199 per year and then you STILL have to pay your insurance co-pay whenever you see them. This makes no sense, as patients are being double billed and they are receiving double profits and no telling how much insurance is reimbursing them. Additionally, I paid my "co-pay"online and then received notification that I needed to pay my bill. So I called them and they said the payment didn't go through. So I asked what that meant. I know my card was not declined because my American Express card has no limit. Apparently, their payment system had a glitch, I guess. When I looked at my receipt closely, it said $0 was processed. Who sends a receipt for zero dollars? Insane. If you must use them, tell them you don't have health insurance. Also google NPR regarding their article of one medical putting profits over patients.

All I knew is I felt like I was about to die and couldn't walk and pain places I couldn't explain. They saved my life. For that I will always be grateful. Now 8/10 nurses were awesome. The cleaning staff are always awesome since I just laid bored and people watched. The other maybe two nurses were just a little disrespectful or sarcastic for whatever the reason being that was the only thing that irritated me. I've been treated pretty well when I've gone to the UC San Diego Hospital. And since having Medi-cal I know my options are limited or my stays are like only the 10 days I believe, this last time was life saving. But the current yelp rating being 2.3 average for the Hospital is the furthest thing from true in my opinion. I couldn't even walk to make it to the bathroom and close to death it felt like and was told that it was good I came to the hospital. And maybe my experience isn't a five star but I feel it's closer to five than four. The doctors are awesome. Incredibly informative. Thanks to them and everyone being professional. For being kind. A little confusing for the negative yelps, being good and professional with their profession and character. That's my opinion and experience. Since anyone who does help seems to be Hunted like an animal not always in a positive light, I'll leave out names I remember. Thank you
