Referred by a colleague, I Went to Dr Kohanis office for annual exam. When asked if I had health concerns, I foolishly asked questions about allergies I had and was billed for not only the exam but for medical visit ( for the medical discussion). Dr ordered blood work and then after a week without follow up, I called to enquire and assistant said due to no irregularities they did not feel need to notify me. Couple months later, still suffering same symptoms, I returned back and dr order more blood work. This time, test came back with more information regarding environmental allergies. Billed for medical diagnosis and medical visit AND never received any follow up. After visiting a different doctor I now FINALLY have been properly diagnosed and a treatment plan has been put into place. I was referred here by a good friend. Her exact words where "I LOVE the doctor but the front desk staff makes me want to find a new doctor". She has had several instances where the front desk did not act professional. They refuse to change her name in their system from when she got married so picking up a prescription is impossible. She also found a lump in her breast and they couldn't get her in for over a month! I called to see this doctor because I was having pain and blood when going to the bathroom. The girl I spoke to said she didn't know how to make an appointment and she would have someone call me the next day to schedule. Two days went by with no word so I called them back and they said the doctor had my information but she was refusing to see me because it sounds like I have "underlying issues". I then asked if I could get a basic physical to check my over all health. Nope. She was going to refer me elsewhere. I have yet to get that referral and that was 5 days ago! I found a new doctor and they were booked about a month out but when I told them my symptoms they squeezed me immediately because blood while using the bathroom is actually pretty serious! And while her assistants are not nurses, they have the same loving, caring approach as most great nurses I've had the pleasure of being treated by. I like that Dr. Kohani is a Harvard trained MD but that she also has a holistic side of her practice. I think the combination of the two is very rare in the medical world and what a gem to find her open to both practices. When I came to UCSD, I, like many other newly realized adults, understood that I would have to schedule my own doctor appointments (as much as I didn't want to). Scouring the Internet to find a good doctor who took bluecross/blue shield I found Doctor Kohani and scheduled an appointment. Four years later she's still my doctor, and I have not once regretted my choice. She's the nicest and most personable doctor I've ever had. Each time I had a check up she's made me feel like I've mattered, not just as a patient, but as a person. She remembers my name and even little things like what was going on in school last time I spoke with her and plans that I had. She is very easy to get along with, and make sure you are comfortable. As someone who is relatively healthy I've never had any major health needs, but for the things I did need checked, she was always upfront of all the medical options available and explained each thing in detail. In terms of appointments I've never had to wait more than a few days to see her. She is prompt and understands your time is valuable too and never rushes you. Before I got a car, I took the bus from campus which only took about fifteen minutes so this would be a good choice for other UCSD students. Her staff at the front desk are nice as well, and professional. They always greet me and are quick to make sure I was taken care of before heading to Kohani's office. I found Dr. Roya Kohani through a random search on the internet and what a find she is! Even though I was there for just an annual physical, I had a fall few months before my first visit to her. Through her thorough neurological examination and concerned questioning she concluded I needed a MRA that literally saved my life! Dr Kohani has been my doctor for the last 10 years. I could not say enough nice things about her and the front office staff. She has seen my husband and son also. We all find her completely professional and attentive to our every need. I like the fact that she does not prescribe medicines if they are not needed. She tries to find ways thru supplements and nutrition but will prescribe something if she thinks it is necessary. I completely trust her judgement and find her extremely knowledgeable. I have been a a patient of Dr. Kohani for less than a year , though searching for a scientist of her caliber of thinking for 10 years... DO NOT SEE THIS DOCTOR!!! The staff is unprofessional and unorganized. They can't seem to work with the pharmacies to get the prescriptions filled and blame the pharmacies saying the pharmacy didn't call or that Dr Kohani's office didn't receive the fax etc. They blame the pharmacy but after many calls to both the pharmacy & Dr Kohani's office it becomes clear who has dropped the ball & on multiple occasions. Also, Dr Kohani is very difficult to get ahold of and the office staff won't pass on a message to have her call. I begged Tina to please have DR Kohani contact me and she refused. I emailed and never received a reply. I finally saw another doctor and when I did was told that my dosage from Dr Kohani was not correct and explained many of my issues even though I had just visited her and had lab work done. Dr Kohani also schedules unnecessary appointment as a way to increase her fees. She is also very defensive when questioned. Overall, not worth the money or aggravation. read more

I had been interested in doing hormone replacement as a result of two of my friends my age that had great things to say about it. Both friends were working with their regular physicians. I looked online for hormone replacement in San Diego and found Dr. Kohani listed with a very impressive set of credentials. First thing that got my attention was the cost to see her, $350 for initial consult. Next was lab fee $650. Her office is nestled into a lovely area in downtown La Jolla, and when you arrive for the first time the beautiful young ladies that work for her are very impressive. They look more like models than medical personnel and are extremely friendly and charming as is Dr Kohani. She is an absolutely beautiful and charming woman!! However, I wasn't their to admire beautiful women, but instead for medical treatment and direction. After becoming a client/patient I quickly learned that it was nearly impossible to get information to her, or from her, through her lovely assistants who are just that. Not nurses or possessing any medical background whatsoever. Just very lovely young ladies. Dr. Kohani does not, under any circumstances, make or return phone calls to patients or other physicians. All calls are handled exclusively by the lovely office beauties who literally read prepared statements from their computers. In that they aren't nurses or medically trained in any way, they usually don't understand the content of what they are reading. Nor do they understand any medical questions you may have. And if you have another physician that needs to consult with Dr. Kohani, the same MO applies. All info is passed through the office beauties. As frustrated as I became trying to communicate with them, my other doctor's office was pulling their hair out trying to get info through those lovely young ladies. Now I see a regular MD for the very same treatment at less than half the price and none of the mishaps with his office personnel who are registered nurses and are familiar and knowledgeable with the dialog they engage in. My questions are answered in one call or at the very least the same day. His labs are also less than half of what Dr. Kohani's were from the same lab. I'm not at all sorry I started hormone replacement and recommend it highly if you're 50ish and feeling slow. But unless you're looking for some very expensive eye candy in a very expensive and elegant setting, I would seek this kind of treatment elsewhere. It is becoming very common and many MDs now offer this same treatment at a fraction of the price without the hassle. read more

Went to Dr. Kohani's office for some gastrointestinal issues and did not have a good experience in any part of the process. First, making the appointment was difficult as it was nearly impossible to talk to a person on the phone (lots of holding). Second, I made the appointment and then the office called three times to reschedule the time, often with notice of only 24 hours. Because I have a child at home and was coordinating child-care, this was extremely inconvenient. Finally, at the appointment the medical assistant did not have good people skills and came off as rude as she was explaining billing. Dr. Kohani herself was fine and knowledgeable, but not a good fit for me. It seemed that the main focus of the office is cosmetic procedures and caters to a wealthy, older crowd. If you are going for those reasons, I'm sure it's a great place, but for general internal medicine, I think there are probably better options that are more medically focused and would provide better all-around care.
