Chicken-fried steak with mashed potatoes and green beans.
    Michael M.

Tucked away in a nondescript industrial park, this gem is easy to miss--but well worth the effort. I'd visited once before and had been dreaming of their chicken-fried steak ever since. On my return, it did not disappoint. Tender, perfectly breaded, and smothered in rich cream gravy atop homemade mashed potatoes, it's easily among the best I've ever had. Add a side of their crisp fried okra and tender green beans, and you've reached pure comfort-food bliss. A friend opted for the four-piece dark fried chicken plate and declared it might be the best fried chicken he's ever tasted--no small praise. The staff adds to the charm, combining efficiency with a warm rapport, particularly with the many regulars who clearly keep coming back. The decor is simple and unpretentious, but you're not there for the furniture--you're there for the food. And that chicken-fried steak alone is reason enough to make the trip.

When you first walk into Wanda J, the decor may not catch your eye, as it looks a bit run-down and old. However, the food truly makes up for it. I enjoyed the Thursday special, beef tips over rice, served with brown butter beans, green beans, and a generous slice of cornbread. Everything was absolutely delicious. I didn't take any pictures of the food--my apologies for that--but I did pick up a peach cobbler to go. It's crusty and filled with peaches soaking in a wonderful syrup. It really took me back to my grandmother's peach cobbler, which brought back some lovely memories.

Lovely a hole in a wall type restaurant that's a Family owned for 3 generations that should tell you something! The staff are super friendly and on it with making sure you have everything you want or issues needed to be taken care of. The batter on this chicken was so light and flaky with a juicy fresh tasting chicken.

Delicious comfort food served with a smile. This hidden gem should be on everyone's bucket list. The chicken fried chicken, candied yams, and green beans are enough for two, but I could stop myself and finished all of it This place is no frills and kind of out of the way, but it's worth the trip. Give em a try

We had been meaning to try Wanda J's for breakfast and we're not disappointed! Tucked back in a 60's style restaurant at the airport, and we had the friendliest server! Hubby enjoyed eggs, hash browns and 2 filets of catfish. Daughter loved her egg and chicken biscuit and I had a fantastic skillet and biscuit. New favorite breakfast spot!!!

Four piece fried chicken. Sides: mashed potatoes, fried okra, cornbread.

I had heard several positive reviews and generally positive feedback regarding Wanda J's prior to our recent visit. My wife decided to visit the location by the airport and were not disappointed! We ordered fried chicken and chicken fried steak. Both were excellent! Our waiter was also very pleasant, refilling our soda and tea glasses in a timely manner. I highly recommend Wanda J's. The comfort food level is sky high! We plan on returning to try out other menu offerings.

The food here was amazing. I had the fried catfish with macaroni and cheese and fried cabbage and cornbread with a sweet tea. The fish was crispy just right, not greasy, never frozen. The mac & cheese was a little runny and needed salt, but was cheesy and good the fried cabbage tasted delightful. I could use a little extra bacon in there. It took approximately 17 minutes to receive my food. they was just starting to get busy but I'm guessing the fish was fried fresh large parking lot. Plenty of spaces. This restaurant recently relocated from Greenwood to this location. The owner is the son of Evelyn's Soulfood, which is the former restaurant that was here the soul food is the bomb, if you're looking for a home cooked southern style fresh eats, come on over here. Daily special yes, they have neckbones on Wednesday and short rib on Friday. Customer service was excellent waitresses was sweet and nice with a smile large portions, and that sweet tea.mm mmmm good.

From midwest comfort food to Caribbean fare to southern-style deliciousness, this little city has it all. In fact, I have yet to have anything even close to a bad meal here. And one of the best I had on my recent visit was a two-piece catfish place from Sweet Lisa's. This tiny little spot is basically takeout-only (though they do have a couple of very small tables by the door...which I nicely asked if I could eat at so my catfish didn't get cold walking back to my hotel, and they very kindly obliged). It's not a fancy spot by any means, but it's homey and has that family-owned vibe that I love in a small restaurant. The catfish meal came with two sides. It was hard to choose, but I picked house-baked mac 'n cheese plus blackeyed peas. It was all just incredibly delicious. The catfish was perfectly, tenderly fried. The mac was creamy and cheesy. And the blackeyed peas tasted like they'd been simmering for hours (with healthy chunks of a ham hock swimming in their delicious broth). I also grabbed a piece of their lemon cake, which I enjoyed later for a hotel dessert. It was all...incredible! I was there on a day when a new employee was learning the ropes, and she was so sweet and friendly, asking all my questions since I'd never been there before. While I ate at that little table by the door, a steady stream of customers arrived to grab their takeout orders. This place is popular!

Because of the…read morecrowd, the food took a little longer than expected to come out, but not excessively so. Most importantly, everything arrived hot and fresh, which I always appreciate when a restaurant is handling a large volume of customers. The service was friendly throughout my visit. The restaurant offers both dine-in and takeout options, with a good amount of seating available inside as well as televisions throughout the space. I ordered the four-piece wing meal, which came with two sides. I chose the collard greens and mac and cheese, along with the cornbread that came with the meal. The mac and cheese was the biggest disappointment for me. It was not particularly cheesy or flavorful, and it reminded me more of a stovetop boxed mac and cheese than a traditional homemade soul food version. It did not appear to be baked, although I could be mistaken. The collard greens were decent, but they also lacked some of the depth of flavor I was hoping for from a soul food restaurant. They were enjoyable enough, but not especially memorable. The cornbread was easily my favorite part of the meal. It was thick, moist, slightly sweet, and full of flavor. I would happily order that again. As for the wings, they were cooked very well. They were hot, juicy, and not dry at all. While I thought they could have used a bit more seasoning or flavor, the texture and preparation were excellent. One thing that did catch my attention was the dessert selection. Everything looked delicious, and if I were to return, it would likely be to try one of the desserts rather than another entrée. Overall, the experience was pleasant, and the staff handled the festival crowd well. While the food did not quite meet my expectations for a soul food spot, there were a few highlights, particularly the cornbread and the well-cooked wings.

The patio seating area was extremely hot, with little to no airflow, making it uncomfortable to sit for an extended period. We placed our order around 6:20 PM. Initially, the hostess advised against ordering the meatloaf, explaining it would take "a while" (about 20 minutes). However, when we asked the owner, Chris, he told us it would be ready in 10 minutes, so we decided to proceed with the order. Our table ordered four meals: two meatloaf dinners, catfish, wings, and soul rolls. One meal (the catfish) arrived within about 10 minutes, but the remaining dishes were not served until 7:22 PM--over an hour later. This meant we were unable to eat together, and most of our party sat waiting in uncomfortable conditions for over an hour without any updates or communication from staff. When we raised our concerns, the owner's response felt dismissive. Chris and his mother were sadly unable to take accountability for our bad experience, even after mentioning 2 of us got food poisoning, instead he said that I the consumer "approached them wrong" as if I am not a paying customer who is trying to actually give feedback! While I was disappointed with the slow service and hot conditions I was never rude to them! He initially explained that the delay was due to the meatloaf taking longer to cook than the fish. However, when I pointed out that my meal had arrived nearly an hour earlier and could have been timed with the rest of the table, he then stated that the hostess had not grouped the tickets together, so he was unaware the orders were for the same table. This explanation did not make sense, as all of our receipts clearly showed the same table number. He did offer a refund, but to be clear, we were not seeking a free meal--we were looking for accountability and to provide feedback that could improve the customer experience. To make matters worse, both myself AND cousin who ordered the meatloaf became severely ill with food poisoning within hours of eating, which raises serious concerns about food safety and handling. We were genuinely excited to support a Black-owned business, which makes this experience even more disappointing. While the food we did receive tasted good, it does not make up for the excessive wait time, lack of communication, poor customer service, and now serious health concerns. Unfortunately, based on this experience, I would not return or recommend this restaurant.

The beef tips were tasty, though I have to say, they didn't quite match the deliciousness of Wanda.J's. They did use a higher quality rice in basmati rice, which was nice. The yams were not overly sweet and quite good. The macaroni and cheese was a bit lacking something, but it was still decent. As for the lemon cake, I enjoyed the large piece and the fresh lemon juice poured on top. I think a thicker lemon glaze could really elevate the cake and make it even more delightful.
