We have loved Walters for years. We even had a very good burger recently. But the last fish fry we had was inedible. Fish was off and too greasy. The cheesecurds had no cheese in them. Don't know what happened but I hope they get back on track. read more

Walter's is a lot like Cheers. They take time to know your name and usual order, they lend an ear, they care about the community they are in, they have a team that complements each-other well, and they've created a familial atmosphere where everyone feels at home with shared respect. Sure, this corner bar is like stepping into a time machine but it's up-kept and comfortable. Sure, you'll hear off-color banter from time to time but it helps broaden debate between patrons. Sure, Walter's is not 100% perfect but who needs perfect? Walter's has become my weekday lunch staple, in part thanks to a solid yet small menu offered at a great price. I know no matter what day of the week I go I'll see the friendly regulars bellied up to the bar drinking Schlitz, I'll see Jimmy manning the grill located behind the long bar, and I'll see one of the great bartenders like Abby with my drink of choice in-hand and all ready to take my order. Favorite food offerings at Walter's: 1.) Wednesday half pound black angus burger special which I top with raw onions and pepperjack cheese and order medium rare. Jimmy is a master at getting the perfect temp for these burgers, as man alive does the burger just melt in my mouth. Oh, and the bakery bun is definitely up for the job of soaking in all those juices without falling apart. 2.) Friday cod fish fry with fries, buttered rye bread, coleslaw, tartar and lemon. I love that you can order a 2 or 3 piece here, as I try to keep my meals fairly small. For $7.50 I can get a more than filling 2-piece fish fry and leave 100% satisfied. Crispy yet not too thick batter on the fish, a well balanced creamy/vinegar coleslaw and great tarter that I attempt to not lick out every last bit. 3.) BLT ($7). Yes, seriously. On your choice of bread (I opt for marble rye) is a hefty amount of mayonnaise, firm tomatoes, crispy leaf lettuce, and a pile of bacon that has been deep fried to perfection, as it is thick enough to chew instead of crumble but still crispy. I'm actually not a fan of tomatoes on a sandwich or a burger as they get soggy and tend to dampen the entire operation... Yet, here they are part of this dream team of a sandwich. Oh, and I pair all of these with a side order of fries for just a $1.50! What I need to do is stop in here at night. I've heard great things about their Wednesday wing special (supposedly better than Point's East) and Thursday taco special (ground beef, chicken, pork, and a vegetarian option). During these crazy COVID-19 times they've reduced their hours, yet they are still offering their food to go. I highly recommend you support them by calling in an order for pick up at 414-774-0440 and then come on back again once they reopen. I have a group of executive ladies who like to hit "dive bars" every few months and this one came highly recommended. It was very busy and everyone was friendly even though we were all dressed up a little more than the regulars. There is a very cute outside area where the smokers congregate - but everyone who smokes is very considerate and made sure we were cool with it. It's a cute little nook to hang out. They serve the traditional bar food which comes out piping hot. We indulged in some cheese curds, breaded mushrooms and corn dogs. It was straight up bar food so don't expect anything fancy. If this was closer to my hood I would definitely hang out here and get to know the regulars! read more

This has been one of those long time bookmarks that I didn't know when I would get over until today by accident. I went to another bar in the area for a burger and beer lunch only to find out that Friday and Saturday are the only days that they serve food so I jumped on yelp to find another bar with food and Walters was close so I went over. The place is a nice neighborhood bar with friendly people. Approximately 10 taps on hand and a grill in the middle of the bar and I didn't have to leave a credit card to start my beer lunch, inside joke from another bars beer lunch fiasco. The menu is small and I will post a picture but I was having a burger with lettuce, tomato, raw onion pickles and cheese only to keep it simple when I build a burger. I asked for rare and the woman cooking my burger kinda panicked because she didn't want to over cook it and took my order. The burger and toasted buns are cooked on a char grill which I like because that adds flavor to the meat. When my cheeseburger hit the bar it looked good on a nice bun, no generic back yard bbq bun. The fresh toppings were thick cut with leaf lettuce, my personal fav for a burger. The burger was cut in half so I could see that it was cooked rare, nice. The bun looked bready but it was fresh/light and soft. The cheeseburger was tasty with the fresh cold toppings right to the last bite, I marveled how tasty it was because it was so simple. Overall they do a good cheeseburger and at $11 with a tap IPA for lunch it's pretty reasonable and hit the spot for a beer and cheeseburger lunch. read more

Tl:dr this place is a perfectly good divey spot in Tosa. Cheap drinks, cheap eats and always enough space to find a table for you and your friends. The pub food is pretty good here, I've had the regular burger and pizza burger several times and the fries are crispy and fresh along with the breaded cheeseballs or onion rings. The bartenders are always nice, the music can sometimes be all over the place. Beware of the floor ramps (after you've had a few they're jarring) and nights where sports is happening (it has the potential to get a little busy and bro-ey.) Before the safer at home order due to Covid-19 came into our lives and reeked havoc, we were regulars at Walters as we live very nearby. It's a fun spot to hang out, meet with friends, and grab a bite to eat. The specials always draw a crowd. So, during this unsettling time, we wanted to support them and ordered their Thursday night tacos to go. While we missed the social aspect from before, we enjoyed the tacos and beer to go. This place is a great gem stashed right in front of your eyes yet overlooked!! They have a nice size full bar, great food selection with the grill top right at the bar. Prices are very reasonable! That sandwiches and burgers will leave you wanting More! There is an outside smoking area if this is your thing. There is a private parking lot as well as street parking. So the interior is a bit dated, but I think that is part of the charm!! There is a very large seating area that is suitable for private partys or quiet private moments. They have 1 beautiful shuffle board that is still in use. Bathroom's are not gender neutral but everything is wheelchair accessible. This is a Must Try Spot!! Been coming here for years. Walters is the consummate "neighborhood bar." A place "everybody knows your name" and/or a place that strangers can feel welcomed at. For beer drinkers, they've got all kinds of bottled beer and numerous tappers. For cocktail drinkers, they pour good drinks at reasonable prices. They serve a tasty array of finger food/appetizers, have great burgers, numerous sandwiches and have "special" food nights: Wednesday is chicken wing nite. These chicken wings are not the run of the mill wings you get at most bars. These are flash fried and then finished on the grill after being tossed in bar manager Jimmy's secret recipe sauce. Just outstanding. Thursday nite is Taco nite (chicken or beef), Friday is fish fry and Saturday nite is rib nite. Lots of bar seating as well as quite a few table tops. There's a few video machines for the wagerers amongst us and a pool table, too. Anywhere you sit, you'll be able to watch whatever sports are being televised at the moment. Walters is an incredible neighborhood bar where everyone seems to know each other. They have a little grill behind the bar where they make food for you; I'm a big fan of their fish fry and their burgers. I like coming here on my off days and having a few beers which chatting with Jimmy, Val or any of the other wonderful bartenders they have here. Since I've been in Wauwatosa I have been to Walter's several times. I've had burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches, and onion rings, and can honestly say that I've never had any better, even at pricy restaurants. The menu is very small, but what they do, they do superbly. The beer on tap selection isn't huge, but adequate. The service is attentive and pleasant. There seem to be a lot of locals of all ages that frequent the bar, but they seem welcoming to newcomers. I have found friendly people at the bar to chat with several times. Bar food served in here is above average and very reasonably priced. Thursday night taco night is my favorite night to come in here. Jimmy does his thing on the grill whipping up tacos at a crazy rate. Multiple meat options including ground beef, chicken, pork, and a vegetarian option makes this an ideal spot for taco Thursdays in Tosa. Better tacos than Bel-Air if you ask me. Tacos can take some time to come out but they're well worth the wait. Burgers are also super solid here along with poppers. Typical Friday fish fry options along with a rib dinner on Saturday. Classic corner bar. There's a long bar, complete with a grill and fryer. That's right, they do their cooking behind the bar. The menu includes fryer appetizers, burgers and sandwiches. They also have food specials on certain nights. Wednesdays, they do wings; Thursdays are tacos; and Fridays are fish fry. I happened to come on a Wednesday. They offer $5 domestic pitchers and 12 wings for $7.95. Well, don't mind if I do! I ordered a pitcher of Miller Lite, all for myself. I didn't finish the whole pitcher, but I got my money's worth. One Miller Lite costs $3, so if I'm going to have more than one, it's cheapest to get a pitcher for $5. I also decided to try the wings. They kinda took a while, and it wasn't very busy. When the wings finally arrived, I understood why it took so long. First, they fry the wings; next, they toss them in sauce; then, they finish them on the grill. It's a process. And it works. The wings were really good!! There's no sauce options; there is only one. It's a classic buffalo flavor, with a great zing. Add the grill marks and that great grill flavor, and they've got an awesome wing. There's lots of seating at the bar. Plus, they have about 12 tables and an outside patio, with additional tables. The decor is old school. I'd guess 1970s, with the rust colored carpet, wood paneling on the walls, and wall openings with decorative spindles. They played classic rock music all night. And nobody seemed to mind, because there is a jukebox, but no one touched it. The crowd was mostly 30s & 40s, and there seem to be a lot of regulars. The bartenders knew a lot of people by name. This place is a comfy place to go with minimal updates mainly the TV's I made a suggestion a while ago and it was good to see that they adjusted the lamps to allow unobstructed views from across the bar. I'm not really a dive bar kind of girl but Walters in Tosa on 75th and North is our standard for end of night drinks. They have it all - wood paneled walls, greasy bar food, cheap beer, darts, pool, friendly patrons/bartenders and that dive bar smell (spilled beer, urinal cake + grease). Shockingly, the ladies room is redone and quite nice. You'll have a better time at Walters if you're ending the night up here and have had a few already. For example, one St Pat's we ended up here after a LONG night at Derry's. My sis + I went to the ladies and returned to a free plate of fried chicken. It was from their St Pat's buffet but my sister was absolutely CONVINCED it was magic. Now, Walter's is known to her as the "magical fried chicken bar". I'm pretty sure she threw up that chicken later and it probably wasn't so magical, but that's a story for another time.... read more

I decides to carry out on Thursday Taco Nite. I walked into the bar at 6:20 pm and ordered a pint and 4 tacos plain(nothing but beef and chicken). I certainly expected a wait so when I finished my beer at 6:45 the bartender asked if I would like another. When I asked how much longer for my carry out she had a conversation with the cook and came back stating it would be a while. I had a second beer and to their credit was at no charge. by this time I was seeing people who came in after me getting served. I proceeded to drink my beer to have my 4 plain taco order finally arrive at 7:10. I never got an explanation as to why this difficult order took so long, only a thank you and good nite. Call in and pick it up, dine in, but I would not advertise that you just walk in for a beer and a carryout. Unless you want to wait 50 minutes. read more

I guess I didn't get the same warm welcome as others when I came to Walter's for a Friday at 5 drink and dinner. Half of the staff was very welcoming and poured some stiff drinks and slung burgers on the grill only seconds after ordering. Then, I dealt the other bartenders, that pasted me over 4-5 times serving the repeat customers drinks many times before circling back the 2 feet to me, even after making eye contact. The burgers are ok for a dive bar... but watching them prep the burgers and put lettuce and tomatoes on my burger with bare hands really ruined my experience. read more

More importantly, they have good bar food, (when I say bar food, I mean that they actually make the food right behind the bar), cheap beer, generous mixed drinks, and super friendly bartenders and patrons. Best of all, it's close to my house so I can either stumble home on foot, or set the Jeep to autopilot.
