This place is horrible! Do not go here! I brought them my watch to replace the battery and they broke it. They did then "fix" the watch, but it was still not fully functional, I needed to buy a new watch, and they charged me for them breaking my watch. I then bought a new watch from them, it broke within a few months, was under warranty, I returned to them, and they refused to repair it, saying the damage wasn't covered by the warrantee, when it clearly was a covered issue. Do not go here for watches, repairs or new watches. And they are not trustworthy, I will never go here again. read more

I have lived in the Boston area for forty years, the first 20 in Brookline very close to Walter's. I lost my college ring which I never thought I would find, but I did. It needed to be repaired. That was the first time I went to Walter's and they did a beautiful job. Since then I take all of my jewelry and watch repairs there. They do excellent work always and it's always ready when they say it will be. Their prices are reasonable and they take great care with each piece. The only time I went elsewhere for a simple repair, I paid twice as much. Walter and Leah are lovely and very accommodating. This is an old school jewelry store, don't expect any bubbly sales mumble jumble. I brought my old family heirloom rings to be serviced and cleaned and couldn't be happier! He looked at the rings right then & there and walked me through what he'll be doing. The rings look as good as new and all the prongs were reinforced nicely. I had such a wonderful experience at this jewelry store. I needed to have my diamond pendant appraised and I found them online with Google Maps. They are right off the C train, practically in Coolidge Corner on Harvard Street. Walter and Leah were two of the most lovely, warm and inviting owners I have ever met in this city! I broke the pin on the band of my $100 watch. I had tried to bend it back but it became clear to me that it wasn't gonna be around long. I was reaching for a tub of Limited Edition Flavor of the Season French Vanilla Cool Whip when the band let go for good. Luckily the elastic cuff of my coat prevented it from falling to the floor, smashing and disintegrating. I was cruising around Coolidge Corner with the watch in my pocket on my way to get a burrito and I decided to see if there was anyone nearby who could fix it. All the yelp reviews that were negative tended to center around 2 things, cleaning and resizing rings. I needed neither of these things so I figured I'd give 'em a shot. The whole needing to be buzzed-in is a little weird especially considering the most expensive thing I saw was a Bulova watch running about $300 right across from a plastic drugstore rack of Casios. So not exactly the highest of high-end stuff necessitating an air-tight security system. When I got in, I showed the woman my broken band and she seemed disappointed that my watch was an automatic therefor was never going to need a battery. I had seen reviews stating batteries were $10 to replace so I figured my $100 watch was about to become a $110 watch and since I like it, I was OK with that. The woman began to work and I paced around in the store and played with my phone to keep myself occupied. A few minutes passed and she came back with a fixed band. I put the watch on my wrist and asked how much. In a heavy accent she said something I couldn't make out. I asked "ten?" She said "no, three." So three bucks later, I'm on my way. I probably wouldn't have my rings resized there (particularly since I don't have any) but I have another watch in my nightstand with a broken band and I'm pretty sure I'll be bringing it to them to fix. read more

I'd been putting off replacing the battery in my watch for months, even though this little chore nagged at me multiple times per day as I walked by Walter's Jewelers and saw their watch battery window signs. Finally I sucked it up and brought my watch in. I was almost totally deterred when I tried to open the door in the middle of the day, to find it locked, but turns out, you have to be buzzed in. Gotta protect the precious gems and what not inside. The woman behind the counter, who gave me a wonderful sense of warm, friendly grandma-ness attention, helped me right away. In the few minutes she took to put a new battery in my watch, I ogled the absolutely beautifuulllll rings and necklaces in the counter displays. Everything was so gorgeous and so unique, unlike any other jewelry store I've been in before....wish I could afford something (slash everything) for myself (or had someone to spoil me with fine jewelry!). Five minutes after I walked in, I was on my way out, with a working watch and a renewed, shallow pining for a man with money. read more

I should have checked the reviews before going, but I just went in because my watch needed new batteries and I also support local businesses when I can. After replacement, the watch died again a week later. I went back with my receipt, asking for the battery to be changed again, and it was only with some difficulty that I avoided being charged a second battery replacement fee. I got my engagement ring resized here, despite seeing some really bad reviews. I learned a good lesson about believing yelp reviews! The store was cluttered, and required people to be buzzed in. The jeweler took 6 days to resize the ring. When I picked it up, I pointed out that it was still too big. He and the woman working there pretty rudely insisted that all rings will spin around on my finger and that it was sized correctly. Admittedly, my knuckle is bigger than my finger so I sheepishly left. But, the response to my concern seemed a bit harsh. They definitely did not have my satisfaction in mind. Shortly after, I took the ring to Goldsmith Co. The owner there is very nice and told me that the ring is way to big for my finger. He is resizing it for a lower cost than Walter's. I was so put off by the poor customer service and the unskilled work at Walter's that I will not return. How does this guy stay in business?? read more

This place charges a reasonable fee for watch battery replacement, jewelry cleaning, and jewelry resizing. I've had 2 rings resized, 1 watch battery replaced, and my Pt engagement ring repolished. They charge slightly less than the Newbury St. jewelers for battery replacements. They also charge1/3rd the price I was quoted on Newbury St. for polishing /cleaning Pt rings, which is awesome. The cleaning included ultrasonic. The ring looked great and was done while I chatted with the nice lady. They tend to be busy on Saturday, so you might need to wait in line. read more

The place is slightly unusual... the woman who works there gives her honest opinion about things but she is incredibly warm and friendly and this is last place I would expect to be ripped off. I would say the previous reviewer must be very highly strung to get offended by this place. They put you under no obligation to buy anything. Funny thing about most all of the negative reviews appears to me to be from people that did not buy their item from the store. Try getting your big box, on-line retailer or chain bought jewelry fixed or repaired after the purchase. To all patrons: past, present and with un-rightously indignant, I highly suggest looking at the jewelry in the store. This is all hand selected by Leah with whom I have had the pleasure of doing business for close to 20 years, who in my opinion has excellent taste, provides great counsel and is a genuine and kind woman. So I brought my grandmas wedding ring here on Sunday since it will soon become my wedding ring. It is currently too large for my finger. The wife, Leah looked at it and said she couldn't do a bar in it because that would look ugly as you could see it through the ring. She suggested taking a piece out and resizing it. This sounded great to me! I asked how much and she told me about $50 - $60 dollars. She wrote me a receipt that said I would be charged a maximum of $65 when I got the ring back. On Thursday I get a phone call and it is her husband saying it will be about $180 - $220 dollars. Does anyone else see the vast difference here? He said or he could put a bar in for $70. WTF? Wasn't his wife the one who told me that would look ugly. I felt really creeped out by this bait and switch and went in and got my ring back from them. He was blaming ME for this mistake even though I have proof his wife told me $60. They made me feel horrible and obviously don't know how to run a business. The customer is ALWAYS right, especially when you quote them incorrectly. read more

THIS GUY IS A CROOK!! DISHONEST & OVERPRICED 1) My wife dropped off a watch to have the battery changed. I went to pick it without my pick up slip as I had forgotten. Knowing that I had forgotten my slip, he changed the price on the envelope as he was walking up to the counter!!!! I called him out on that and after fumbling for a bit he said he was including the tax. I reminded him the tax rate and told him that the new price on the envelope with the watch in it was well above the appropriate tax. He acted surprised and was at a loss of words. The old price was crossed out and I showed him that as well. BOTTOM LINE: If you go to Walter's beware that he will try and cheat you if he can. 2) Despite my experience above I decided to give him the benefit of the doubt and drop off 3 watches for battery change. Frankly it was also due to the fact that I live a block away and this place is very close/convenient. All 3 watches started running slow within the first year. I took them back, and he told me the batteries are fine and the watches needed service. Price: $200/watch. This was hard to believe as the watches have been just fine before I took it to Walter's. Usually the batteries last at least 2 years+. What are the chances that all 3 watches need service at the same time!!! 3) HE ALSO CHARGES WHATEVER HE FEELS LIKE IT FOR BATTERIES. One year we were charged $20, and the next $7.50. Walter is a dishonest businessman. Being overcharged for the same service (battery) should be the least of your concerns. If you take an expensive watch to him, he is liable to do something to the watch to be able to then "service" it for a lot more money. read more
