We went toward the end of the evening on a hot summer's night. The fried catfish was superb! Cooked in fresh oil- served hot from the fryer. Excepting the hush puppies we were not as impressed by the side dishes. It didn't matter because we got VERY generous portions of fish! We enjoyed watching the neighborhood regulars come and go. We needed a gift card from Kroger grocery, so to Martinsville, VA we went. Naturally, I researched restaurants in the area because a girl's gotta eat! Uptown Martinsville is a really cute town with two main streets. They have free parking on the streets and several free parking lots. Did I mention all parking is FREE?! We parked FOR FREE and walked around. They really keep their town clean and you can tell the residents are proud of their town. Everyone was friendly and would speak as they passed by. Our goal was Walsh's. This is a small, counter service, eatery with maybe 8-10 tables. They had a sign on the door stating they were short staffed and to please be patient. I've seen this same comment on a lot of businesses and I get it. However, they run this restaurant like a well oiled machine. They use preprinted order pads and then write in special requests. They pass the ticket thru the kitchen window and say ORDER UP. I felt like I had stepped back in time and I loved it! When the food is done, they bring it to you. I ordered the clam strip dinner with a chicken thigh on the side. Don't judge me. Hubs got the 3 piece all white chicken dinner. Most places would give you a breast and two wings. Walsh's gives one wing and two breasts! The clams were good but that chicken...delicious! The skin was well seasoned and really crispy and the chicken was really tender and moist. The potatoes were instant but ok. The biscuit was fantastic! We would definitely get the chicken again but we'll try different sides. read more

This is some of the BEST fried chicken I have ever had. Every complimentary thing others have said is true 100%! If I was rating on chicken alone, it'd be an easy 5 star review. Truth be told, the sweet tea (cause I'm truly southern), hush puppies, and the coconut cake also deserve their own 5 stars. The only hiccup is in the sides. It's hard to fathom how the chicken can be so expertly seasoned and fried while the green beans and mac and cheese could be so meh. If you want green beans that taste like . . . well, um . . . green beans, you'll be very happy. If you want green beans with accoutrements (ham hocks, bacon, or any such seasoning agent), you'll echo my "meh." A little salt went a long way for the green beans and the mac and cheese because I wouldn't have eaten either without those magic little crystals. That said, back tj the good stuff. THE BISCUITS! They weren't warm out of the oven good but still really good which is saying a LOT! This isn't a sideways compliment but respect given to biscuits that were good enough to still be delish when they aren't fresh out of the oven. Some biscuits become paper weights if they aren't hot so I don't know what they've done to these that they would have any shelf life beyond those few moments post oven. Don't skip the biscuit experience. The same is true with the hush puppies. I'd only experienced a tardy hush puppy when it was freshly fried and/or smothered in ketchup. These stood on their own and I could easily have gouged my face with several more because they were so good. Don't skip the hush puppy experience. The coconut cake was so moist and so tasty that I'll end with...don't skip the coconut cake experience. In a nutshell: skip the sides, experience the 5 star elements, you'll wonder why I didn't rate it 5 stars from the start. read more

So Martinsville, VA, for those who never have been here, is a sleepy rural city in the deep South of Virginia - about 2 hrs from Raleigh-Durham airport. I wouldn't call it a dining mecca by any stretch of the imagination, but it is quaint in a kind of a throwback to 1950's city from a movie like Back to the Future. And well, lacking a technologically-advanced DeLorean, I have some slim dining options outside the banal fast food enterprises that I am loathe to frequent. But after rolling around the block of Church St thrice, I found Walsh's - a mom and pop establishment listed here in Yelp. The place is modest in size and tucked back from the road - easy to miss the makeshift sign on the uptown parking lot. Walking in, I could see very clean tables and decent upkeep. You order at the counter and sit. This place hypes its fried chicken as being the cock's walk - pardon the pun. I ordered a three piece dinner with two sides, biscuit, drink, a small side of hush puppies, a piece of cake. Total cost with tip was just under $20. Let's talk hush puppies now. Unlike another restaurant I reviewed last night, Walsh's made the grade!! Solid taste, crispy, and not soggy or stale, their hush puppies has a hint of sweetness to it. A treasure and the way hush puppies are supposed to be!! The unsweetened iced tea was perfect to wash them down with too! Now, for the sides, there's improvements to be had. Mashed potatoes tasted like reconstituted mashed potato flakes - only a couple steps up from KFC in taste/flavour. The beans tasted good but no big bang for my buck. No hint of ham hocks or pizzazz. Pretty much what you'd get from a warmed up jar of Bush's Baked Beans, really. Still, nothing unforgivable here. The chicken, however, was the star of the meal by far. It was fried to crispy perfection, juicy, and moist. Enough to make your grandma cry with tears of joy. And the biscuit was homemade tasting too. They offer you honey if you like on your biscuit and/or chicken. This time I opted for a piece of coconut cake. It was fresh, moist, and delicious! Couldn't have asked for better! I live in Martinsville and finally tried this place for takeout lunch. I ordered for a family of 6 and had to wait 35 minutes. They served 14 customers who ordered after me (I counted orders, not individuals). No apology, no explanation. It was after church so it was standing room only. After they handed me my hot food, they told me they ran out of coleslaw and that the cook was making more; another 5 minutes. I figured the food must be sensational, right? Average at best. The coating on the chicken was rather salty and nothing special. The mashed potatoes are instant. The gravy tasted like a commercial mix. The coleslaw, of course, had no time to marinate. I've had a lot of fried chicken in my life and my mom was southern so I know what southern fried chicken should taste like and this is it! She was all smiles and her personality matched the quality of the food. We ordered the chicken dinner w/ mashed potato.. WOW! and those biscuits.. yummy! The catfish was delicious as well, the whiting sandwich and cheeseburger was hot and delicious! And when I tasted the gizzards, I felt right at home! As if we were not satisfied enough, we had to get the apple fritters, yum yum! And don't get me started on the chicken salad. This place is definitely a gem! The locals are lucky! My husband and I took a trip thru the Martinsville area recently, and I had asked for recommendations of (safe) places to eat in the area from a Facebook group I am a member of. (If you have this allergy, you understand). Well, Walsh's was recommended. They did not disappoint. Mrs. Walsh is an absolute gem! She took the time to answer all my questions and showed me the things on the menu I would be able to safely eat. Mrs. Walsh explained that there is a fryer dedicated to customers with AG and the staff are very careful not to cross contaminate. She did not rush me and was very understanding about my fear of eating something I did not cook myself. The food did not disappoint! (No reactions!) The chicken was absolutely delicious! Fried to perfection, the chicken was hot, well-seasoned and nice and crisp. Reminded of me of my grandma's fried chicken. The french fries were hot and crisp. The little corn fritters were delightful little bites of sweetness, all hot and crispy. My husband had a more than ample serving of Apple Cobbler. He said it was quite good. The servings are quite large. You sure won't walk away from here hungry. You get your money's worth at Walsh's. The place is clean, there is ample seating and the staff were all friendly and accommodating. There isn't a bad thing to say about our food and experience here.
