This time was no exception and I received exactly the personalized service I've come to expect from this store. This is a seemingly small store that is larger than anticipated because it extends far beyond what can be seen from the parking lot. Most importantly, it has the best customer service of any home improvement store I've ever experienced. I have been given great guidance in the past with paint and cabinet pulls. This time I was in need of wire to keep a wooden fence closed shut, as the gate would frequently open due to weather conditions or kids having fun. My concern was keeping the fence gate closed so we could let our dog out in the yard without concerns about her escaping from an open gate. Andrew listened to me carefully and helped me through the whole process of selecting wire and a lock to ensure my dog would be safe. I really appreciated that he was professional, practical and helpful. Thank you Andrew! I truly love this store and find the customer service far superior to what you would encounter at one of the major big box home improvement stores. I have also found their prices to be fair. Recently stopped in after they took over and shopped several items I was interested in - 1/4" plastic compression valve was $14.99, almost double price at Homies. spark plugs I used to get for $2.79 are now $4.89, 6" Crescent adjustable wrench $24.99 - usually $15 or less anywhere else. Even a simple foam gardening kneeling pad was nearly 20 bucks for something that looks like it would be sold at a dollar store! Local hardware stores have always been a treasure, in my opinion, but these huge prices hikes make it much harder to shop here - unless it's an emergency or something small like a random nut or bolt.

The baskets are gorgeous, healthy, and overflowing! They're heavy too! This year we got two at $35 each. They also sell flats of flowers for $14.95 I believe. More cost effective to buy the flowers and build your own hanging basket, but if you don't want to fuss with that they have plenty to buy outright. I went back a few days ago because I wanted to buy some flowers for my planters. The weather has been so cloudy and rainy I never started any from seeds. I was able to get way more than I needed for $40. Beautiful petunias and zinnias! I have a hummingbird that visits our hummingbird feeder daily so I wanted flowers to attract them as well. I still have some open pots so I plan on going back to buy some veggie plants. They accept cash and card. Service is always great too. The man that works there is very knowledgeable and helpful. I told him what I had and he suggested what to buy. He said they only put 3 petunia cuts in the hanging baskets we bought earlier this month. I repurposed a hanging pot and planted one petunia cut in it. I'll update with photo once it starts filling out.

We decided to start a new family tradition and purchase a local pine tree for our Christmas. Matthes is tucked away on Lulu in the middle of the Ida farmland, an area my wife and I know well from our younger years. (Wave to the cows and horses) The setup on a Wednesday afternoon was wide open and wonderful. There were about 50 pre-cut trees of every variety staked on display near the front of the property by the big parking lot, and you could also venture out into the great unknown if you wanted something that they hadn't already chosen for display. We were lucky enough to find a PERFECT 7' Fraser for our living room right up front, and after carrying it up to the bailing area, they put it on a "shaker" to shake off all the excess pine needles. (Genius!) It was $4 to have our tree bailed, nice and tight, and that allowed us to easily wrap it with the provided string and tie down to our roof. We were out the door with a perfect tree and tip for our helper for $80. Honestly, there were probably only about four other customers there during our visit, but there were port-a-potties and snack area, etc for the big weekend crowds. They also had several, beautifully handmade wreaths hanging for sale. The smell of this thick-branched, sappy Fraser pine has filled our home in less than 24 hours. Start a tradition and buy local. You'll be glad you did.
