Straight forward dive bar with a pool table and juke box. I received quick service by the lady bartender. At first glance, I was a little intimidated by the patrons hanging outside smoking but all was good going in. Simple chairs with round tables and bar seating. Things are kept clean. Walked in on a mildly busy evening looking for a local friendly watering hole. After waiting at a table for a few minutes I realized there was no waitress, which was no big deal, so we moved to seats at the end of the bar and waited easily w 5 minutes before getting up and leaving, having never been even acknowledged, even though the lady behind the bar saw us enter, take a table, and then move to the bar while she carried on conversations with the other patrons, soundly ignoring us. If she'd been busy, I'd be sympathetic and understanding, but she was not. Instead, she continued to converse, even though she wasn't pouring drinks, and 15 minutes is long enough to at least say something like" Hi!, be with you in a minute". She must be the owner, because her rudeness was amazing. Maybe if you're a local, she's friendly, but we'll never go back. My husband and I were staying in Alameda for the weekend because we were going to a concert at the Fox. Wally's was a short walk from our airbnb and we stopped in after dinner on Saturday night. Crystal, the bartender greeted us immediately and said she would be right with us, which really set the tone for excellent service. I adore dive bars and seek them out whenever we go to a town we haven't been to before. Not everyone you meet in some of these places is friendly, which is fine cause that's kinda the dive bar charm. Crystal however was so professional and a total blast. She really knew how to interact with people and I loved being a fly on the wall and getting to hear her and her regulars banter. I always know it's going to be a great bar if the bartender is joking around with locals and having a good time. If you're thinking of visiting this little gem adjust your expectations accordingly. This isn't the place to go to if you want to be waited on hand and foot. We never had to wait longer than a couple minutes for a drink and service was super fast but I still wouldn't come in here and try and order a fancy drink and then complain if it didn't turn out the way you want it to. Order a beer or a shot or a simple cocktail and just enjoy it for what it is! If you have an aversion to loud regulars, cuss words or drunks, I probably just wouldn't come here. One time at the bar of La Penca Azul, back in 2009, I was picking the brain of a Alameda-raised acquaintance regarding other Alameda drinking establishments. His take on Wally's Corner: " Don't go there, man." He said it like the old man warning Bastian in "The Never Ending Story". So obviously I knew I would have to check out Wally's one day. In 2011, I moved back to the Webster side of town and started to visit Wally's Corner every other month or so. Two TVs on each side of the bar typically showing the Giants, Warriors, or Raiders (This ain't Whine and Cheese country.) There is typically 4-5 men in their 50's -60's, devoid of emotion, with a Budweiser pint in front of them. No one really talks to one another. It's pretty quiet in here. Typically one of these men are sleeping. I have been served by 3 different bartenders here, and all of them pour strong and charge cheap. If you don't want to watch the game, there's a pool table to the right, and the jukebox to the right. I have been known to throw in some coins and crank some Skynyrd. Last time we invited some A's fans to meet us here, to watch the Bay Bridge series. The female of the other couple proclaimed: "This place is just sad." I guess she didn't appreciate the tuna salad (They usually have some type of free grub in the back,one time during the recent Golden State Warriors playoff push they had 5 layer dip and Twizzlers..SCORE!!) or the sleepy veteran patrons who have the most stoic expressions you'll ever see. Hopefully you understand now a little of what Wally's Corner is all about. A quiet place, with efficient bartenders, strong drinks, older clients, and the Bay Area sports teams you love always on the tube. Sit back and relax. I would say close your eyes but then you couldn't read this review, duh! So, anyhow, picture your eyes are closed as you read this review. If you can't do that then you do not have the imagination to move on to part two of this review so stop here and go read some "useful" (ie. boring) review. Ahhh, still with me? Good. Now imagine, if you will for a moment, the sort of bar who's tap beer selection includes Budweiser and Budweiser. Get a good image of the layout of the bar. Now dim the lights a little bit. Not that much, this isn't a damn lounge. Okay, perfect. Throw in a few regulars at the end of the bar, you know the ones... the fixtures in the place who know each other and the bartender by name and a long history of drinking. We need a splash of color. That can come in the form of a pool table in the back with some brightly colored felt. Now, hmmm...something quirky. I choose dice presented to me on a mouse pad that has some sort of patriotic design, but, really you can choose whatever you want. Okay, you have an image in your head? What? It reminds you of somewhere? That bar, that one you went to that one time, that I miraculously described perfectly, where you drank the Budweiser and did a little gambling while chatting with that guy down the bar in the flannel shirt? As we make our way out of the Fireside, the following (paraphrased) conversation unrolls: "I've played Liar's Dice, but I don't remember how. How do you play twenty-four?" "OK, so you roll six dice, and you want to get four sixes, and you need a one and a four to qualify. If you don't qualify, you loose. You have to keep at least one roll. Then you re-roll. You're trying to get twenty-four, or at least higher than the other person." "I... wait... what? What are...? I'm not following you." "Alright, so I can't explain it-- maybe Wally's will have dice, and I can show you." And the very first thing we hear as we enter Wally's is the sound dice clacking on the bar. Outside of my immediate attention, a man is playing video poker in a corner. If I can remember correctly, there's a pool table in back. The bar is stocked with your typical boozes, bolstered by bags of chips as snacks. The bartender kindly accommodates our request for a set of dice with our drinks. Over a bottle of decent beer (Wally's only has Budweiser on tap), the game plays out quickly. Bets are made. As it turns out, 24 is a very simple game, and I'm a lucky man. Time passes. Wally's doesn't. Wally's is a dive, the one that kinda empties as 9pm rolls around since it's all past the regulars bedtime. Alot of the old schoolers, you can tell from their camo gear and USS Hornet hats, were probably stationed here at the naval base from before. Even though some of the "younger (40-50yr old)" regulars may look mean with their biker wear and mullets. They didn't really care as we were there for their $8 pitchers of Bud and $.75 pool table as much as they were. Dale Earnhardt would feel comfortable here. I counted about 3 folks rockin' the hell out of their mullet. This is what I think a dive bar in the back country Midwest would look like. read more

I just moved into this area with my boyfriend and we had nowhere to go on Thanksgiving. We came in for a drink and to my surprise they serving a home-cooked thanksgiving dinner! Turkey, stuffing, pie! It was a blessing. Staff is nice and drinks are a reasonable price. I will be coming back. read more

This was an awesome little dive bar in Alameda. I live not that far down the street and glad I found a new place to hang without being in a cramped packed bar to have fun in and on the north side of the island. They have a kick-ass jukebox with an extremely large classic rock collection that plays at the perfect level (were you can talk to someone playing pool and not have to shout). They also have 2 very large LCD tv's on each corner of the bar where I can see game days being the place to be without the crowds. The pool table is only 75 cents, but you need to be gingerly with it to make it work. The 8 dollar pitchers and bottle beer collection is awesome, not what you would expect. It also has a full bar, but my lady and I just enjoyed the pitchers. They do have an interesting free buffet that constantly changes throughout the night. It had doughnuts (that other yelpers reviewed that I couldn't believe was true), bags of chip/doritos, mystery meat in bowls, every condiment you can think of from the surrounding restaurants/takeout places and someone brought in a half eaten cherry cake (hence the constantly changing buffet). I guess I need to contribute on my next visit to feel like a regular. It also has a free coffee, tea and hot chocolate station next to the bar as well. Yeah, very interesting for sure. The ambiance is very interesting! The random regular falling a sleep multiple times at the bar throughout the night, random large groups that floated in and out, a cool bar tender, the regulars glued to the tvs watching a TBS movie sipping their beers with the awesome jukebox playing in the background. We will definitely be back for another fun night and we'll bring some friends with us next time too to enjoy this gem. Wally's, they have books and vhs rentals in this place...which for the most part would be ok if they had something more legible than "See Spot Run." Pool table in the back but be ready to play for it with one of the Wally Pool Sharks (NEVER PUT MONEY ON A GAME WITH THESE GUYS). Doreen is the bartender, she's very nice but you know she's into young guys, so don't drink too much or Doreen will find an excuse to "take care of you" if you know what I mean. Our first libation of the eventing between pinball stints was at Wally's. The bartender, Doreen, was sweet, accommodating, and had the funkiest overly fried locks I have seen in a long time not to mention the glitter amply sprinkled head to toe. The bar was filled with single men that seemed to be staples in the bar stools. There was a spread of free Doritos, donuts, and cookies. The conversation was your typical dive jive and because it was so quiet in there, you could hear every word uttered. "My niece is getting her boobs done. I myself don't think I need any due to my great personality." "I came down to Alameda after living in Mendocino looking for an appellate lawyer. I found one and my new home. Been here ever since." The silence made Doreen nervous, so she cranked up the Giants game to fill the void. The other 7 patrons didn't seem to have an opinion about the level of volume on the TV but one regular after Doreen's urging, pressed the volume up through the hermetically sealed plastic that vacuum packed the remote. One man, Larry, she called him, entered with a large bandage wrapped all around his hand. Doreen, concerned, asked if he was on any medication before she served him his usual pint of Bud, the only thing on tap. We went with Maker's and Coke. The drinks were just-right strong. There was an unused pool table in the back. The lighting was a bit too bright but I did like the film on all of the windows that does not allow anyone to see in but you can watch all of Webster Alameda walking by. read more

Great Divey Bar! The WHITE-blonde (and permed) bartendress is smiley and accommodating, although she didn't make a very good dirty martini (with about 3+ ounces of olive juice, it screamed right past dirty to downright filthy) for one of my uppity friends. Simple, just don't go there for cocktails. Go for a well-poured beer, slug of bourbon and free microwaved popcorn. One note, the lighting is too bright for a great dive. They blacken all the windows and then turn on far too many fluorescent lights. What gives? read more

If it weren't for the fairly cool patrons, I would have been looking for a fork to stab myself in the eyeball out of boredom. Locals of every age come in and enjoy Monday night football, pool tournaments on Thursday evenings and liar's dice whenever anyone wants to play. Check the back table for complimentary food, ranging from donuts and potato chips to a lavish birthday buffet in honor of one of the bartenders. Wally's may not be your best bet for a drunken hookup, but it sure is fun! read more

Well I won't forget this bartender's name: Deidre. My friend and I were chastised because we were trying to get her attention and didn't know her name. Instead of politely introducing herself, we were scolded. Instead of thanking us for showing her where something was, we were harassed. Deidre forgets who are the patrons and who is the employee. I've lived .1 miles from this bar for 3 years and have never went in....until I faced my fears one day and opened the doors. Drank $3 paps and played $1 pool. From 11pm to 12am listened to a 49 year old-ish Coast Guard lady yell to sum other weathered drunk that there was not one gynocologist in the whole city of Alameda, "NOT ONE!". Then the live-in bartender w the flat top heated up a homemade enchilada/taco/burrito in the microwave in back of the bar. What a great night! A+ bar read more

People who say Wally's needs a change want Wally's to be something it's not, and shouldn't be. It's awful to look upon, filled with an array of depressing characters and that's completely awesome. It's a totally grungy dive bar with a lot of nearly dead people, some missing most of their teeth, and some very stoic vet's. But they pour a very strong drink at a good price! And once while I was in there a regular customer brought in a large tray of taco's from a nearby restaurant for everyone to help themselves so I thought that was very cool of her. There is always a table set up along the wall so it seems people bring in free food sometimes. The regular customers and bartenders seem to be sort of a family in there which is nice. Wally's definitely has a lot of mileage on it physically and so does it's clientele. My Wally's strategy: drink fast and get out before some old guy that I can barely understand starts talking to me and wants to buy me a drink. read more

Walked in after a ten mile walk through Alameda heloing a friend who had just moved into the neighborhood, discover all thing around. We wanted a draft beer and were laughing at the fact the only draft hey had was Bud. We were fine with that...they were cold and quenched our thirst! Aaron is the best bartender in the Easterly Bay and it's a rad, unpretentious place with AC/DC on the box. Ok, they could use something other than Bud from the spigots, but Aaron is still the best bartender. Stop by on the weekends. read more

I used to hang out at Wally's years ago but I stopped due to circumstances. I decided to go in to Wally's last year and met a really nice bartender named Jennifer. She made my partner and I feel right at home. In fact, we used to hang out at another local establishment daily but it is not the same. Wally's has a great vibe, really nice bar patrons, Jennifer is more than awesome and the bar owners are really good people to. I am happy I stopped in that day last year because I love to come visit Jennifer and Wallys is like a second home to me now. read more
