The artwork shows Geppetto, the well-known carpenter from the Pinocchio story, holding a hammer above the puppet's head. At first, it might look playful or cartoon-like, but the scene feels more complicated the longer you look. Is Geppetto angry, or is he about to bring Pinocchio to life? The puppet gazes up at him with a mix of trust and worry, adding to the tension. Otterness often uses simple, familiar characters to explore deeper ideas, and this piece is no different. It makes you think about the bond between a maker and what they create - who holds the power, who gets to decide, and how care and control can overlap. It also reflects the original Pinocchio story, with its themes of honesty, identity, and the desire to become real. Completed in 2001 and placed in Citygarden by the Gateway Foundation, the sculpture stands about eight and a half feet tall. Surrounded by other modern pieces, "Kindly Geppetto" stands out for the story it tells and the emotions it stirs. [Review 1173 of 2025 - 439 in Missouri - 24726 overall]

This bronze sculpture pays tribute to the famed cartoon carpenter geppetto from Pinocchio stories and film. Ill be honest and admit when me and my family stumbled upon this sculpture in august 2018 I did not make that connection. But the sculpture was very alluring and my kids was fired up to take a photo op with the sculpture. Overall very cool medium sized sculpture in a downtown Saint Louis area full of fun and cool sculptures. Located just a short walking distance from the famed gateway arch as well.

Between 1803 and 1863, nearly 400 individuals filed lawsuits based on the principle "Once free, always free." If taken to a free state or territory, even briefly, they could argue for their emancipation upon returning to Missouri. Saint Louis became a key battleground for these cases, thanks to anti-slavery lawyers who worked pro bono to challenge slavery through legal channels. Their efforts freed many, including Dred and Harriet Scott, whose case was later overturned in the 1857 Supreme Court decision that denied citizenship to Black Americans and inflamed tensions leading to the Civil War. Unveiled in 2022 outside the Civil Courts Building, the memorial features a 14-foot bronze sculpture by Preston Jackson. It stands on black granite and bears the names of 330 freedom suit plaintiffs. The piece is part of a $1 million initiative that includes a bronze plaque and an online educational platform. The memorial was inspired by court workers who rediscovered old case files in 2006. Judge David Mason formed a committee to honor this legacy, and in 2025, the site was added to the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. More than a sculpture, it stands as a civic symbol of justice, resilience, and the fight for human dignity. [Review 1175 of 2025 - 441 in Missouri - 24728 overall]

Installed in 1999 near the Civil Courts Building, the nine-ton anchor once belonged to the USS Langley (CVL-27), the Independence-class aircraft carrier that earned -NINE- battle stars for its service in both the Pacific and European theaters. The anchor chain was secured through the efforts of Michael Sacco, President of the Seafarers International Union, and the memorial was dedicated by the S.S. Samuel Chapter of the American Merchant Marine Veterans and the Navy League of the United States-St. Louis Council. The first plaque reads, "Dedicated to American Merchant Marine Seaman and Naval Armed Guard who lost or risked their lives for our country in World War II and all wars of this century and all those American Merchant Marine and Navy Seamen standing by to deliver the goods through the world's oceans today." A second plaque was added in 2004 on National Maritime Day to recognize all civilian seafarers who served aboard U.S. Merchant Marine vessels in peace and war. The memorial stands as a quiet but powerful tribute to those who risked their lives delivering troops and supplies across dangerous waters. Though often overlooked, the Merchant Marine and Naval Armed Guard played a vital role in Allied success, and this anchor now serves as a civic symbol of their courage and sacrifice. Installed in the shadow of the pioneering Wainwright Building, the piece pays tribute to the building's original terra cotta detailing while introducing a contemporary approach. Designed by Kelley Van Dyck Murphy and Jonathan Murphy, the artwork consists of nearly 200 clay units, each 3D printed and assembled into a ten-by-ten-foot screen supported by a custom steel frame and concrete base. The name "Flora Field" draws from the building's decorative motifs, including hops flowers that reference the original owner's brewing business. The term "field" refers to a network of related components in architecture, and the piece resembles a dynamic grid of floral forms, each subtly distinct yet part of a unified whole. What makes this installation especially compelling is its material innovation. Instead of using plastic filament, the artists employed locally sourced clay, merging ancient craft with digital fabrication. The clay is extruded layer by layer using a 3D printer, guided by slicing software that translates the design into precise instructions. [Review 1172 of 2025 - 438 in Missouri - 24725 overall]
