My eye was drawn to this sculpture. The woman appears to be walking quite swiftly down the street…read morewith purpose in her eyes and pose. However, she's forever in this walking stance and not getting anywhere. It's a lovely sculpture and Saint Louis has done well to include it with their public art. The caption in the sidewalk reads, "Donald Baechler. Walking Figure. (2003-2004). Bronze. Edition 1 of 3. On Loan From Gateway Foundation." Online, "Walking Figure poses motionless in front of the Gateway Foundation building, stuck forever in walking stance but never gaining any ground. The sprightly form reminds the viewer of a child's drawing of a human, with the arms and legs sticking out awkwardly from a square-like torso. The childish face of the figure grins shyly but contentedly with closed eyes as it towers above the heads of passersby, striding purposefully toward some unknown end. The surface texture of the bronze is strongly textured, inviting the viewer to interact and touch the rough surface of the piece." [Review 14462 overall, 1788 of 2020, number 94 in Missouri.]

This past year I attended the second annual adult Easter egg hunt and boy was it crazy! Tickets…read morewere $10 each and you could turn in 15 eggs. The silver ones got you a big prize and the rest had numbers on them that had to match the ones chosen and you won a prize for that too. We won a few small prizes but the excitement of the hunt itself was well worth the money. If I go again, I'll be sure not to linger in the back! The hunt is held at night, so be sure to bring a strong flashlight and a small bag. Half the fun was watching other people (even ladies three times my age!) scramble to grab the eggs they thought would be winners. The website says there were 25,000 eggs, which sounds about right. At the end of the night, a band played and they sold overpriced beer and food, then announced the grand prize winners. One of the prizes was a vacation for two so if you're a lucky person, you should definitely give it a shot!

Created in 2003 and loaned by the Gateway Foundation, the sculpture stands about six feet tall and sits in the pre-security ticketing area. Zhu Wei, a Beijing-born artist known for his satirical and socially aware work, designed the piece to explore the push and pull between tradition and modern life in China. The figures wear suits resembling the Mao-era Zhongshan jacket, a symbol of mid-century collectivism. Zhu Wei has called his approach an effort to "modernize the past," and this sculpture reflects that idea. Placed in a busy airport, the figures act as quiet observers and cultural messengers, inviting reflection on identity, history, and artistic voice. Originally shown in the Central West End, the sculpture moved to Lambert in 2014. Located in the entertainment district of Saint Louis and just down the street from the famous Fox…read moreTheater, this artwork is officially called "Nijinski Hare" but the locals call it "Kung Fu Rabbit" as it clearly depicts a lagomorph kicking someone's butt. Or it could be a ballet pose because the artist said it was a "playful and unique interpretation of Vaslav Nijinski, the world famous Russian ballet dancer." The sculpture is by artist Barry Flanagan and was initially placed in 1996 in front of the Saint Louis Blues hockey arena. I'm not sure when it was moved here. This bronze sculpture is the work of controversial artist Tom Otterness, who created it in 2007. It…read moreis property of the Gateway Foundation and is currently displayed in the Grove District. Otterness came under fire after killing a dog that he adopted. This sculpture is in Otterness's trademark style of faceless characters with round body parts. This character happens to be a mouse, as the name implies. It really does resemble a mouse sitting on its rump, with its head cocked to the left. The sculpture is in great shape and has lights that shine on it at night. There is metered street parking available within a reasonable walking distance for those wishing to park and take a closer look. As with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 15 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip.
