It is the work of Harry Weber who completed the piece, which is made of bronze and sits 22 feet tall, in 2006 The 3.5 ton sculpture depicts explorers Meriwether Lewis and William Clark and their Newfoundland dog, Seaman. It is owned by the city of St Louis and was commissioned by the Greater St. Louis Community Foundation to commemorate the bicentennial of the explorers' return September 1806. According to Weber, it "took seven months of long hours to complete the structure in clay, make molds and reassemble it like a giant jigsaw puzzle. It is a nice sculpture and Weber does a great job encapsulating Lewis and Clark's feeling of accomplishment, sacrifice and pride. It is very detailed and well done. The viewer can really connect to the piece. The sculpture is designated a national Lewis and Clark site by the US Park Service and spending on how high the Mississippi River gets, sometimes the statue is submerged in the river. In 2014, the statue was removed and restored to repair damage it had received from the flood. In 2016, the statue was returned to the riverfront to a location slightly south and about 17 feet higher than before. Before it was moved, during a flood situation, it would look like the duo were sailing into shore Anyway, as with most sculptures that I have visited and reviewed, this is not a long stop. I was there less than 10 minutes. So, you may want to consider planning out additional stops at many of the other attractions in the area, or making this stop part of a larger itinerary to maximize your time and trip. I would recommend checking out the Gateway Arch and Park while visiting this sculpture.

Most of these pics were taken during the fresh paint times but a couple were this weekend. Going when the artists are there over Labor Day weekend is awesome but it's also such a cool place for photo shoots! I give the Labor Day weekend and the subsequent months 5 stars. It gets to more like 4 as you near the repaint.

Streets are blocked throughout the perimeter so plan to park and walk. Bring a little cash (or a lot) depending on your lifestyle and pay grade lol.. There's so much to see and do. Make a day of it. Or it could be a ballet pose because the artist said it was a "playful and unique interpretation of Vaslav Nijinski, the world famous Russian ballet dancer." The sculpture is by artist Barry Flanagan and was initially placed in 1996 in front of the Saint Louis Blues hockey arena. I'm not sure when it was moved here. Located in Shaw Park near the North Shelter, this large sculpture is a little trippy. It is the…read morework of South-African born and English-educated artist Steven Gregory. The sculpture depicts a stylized elephant sits astride a small blue tricycle, and boasts a head resembling the opening of a saxophone. Unveiled in 2015, it is a lot strange and a lot whimsical. And at 16 feet tall and weighing 17 thousand pounds, you can't miss it. I can not decide if I like or if I hate it. It's art and there you go. When you're in Shaw Park, stop by and check it out. St Louis is maybe the Arch, Cardinals and Blues, but so much more…read more Forest park with the zoo, science center, turtle park, telescope, golf course and walking trails is packed with adventure. In fact the whole St. Louis area is over run with free parks. (Not as interconnected as St. Charles County parks) The food can't be passed up. Pork steak (grilled and slathered in sauce an grilled again cooking in StL sweet BBQ) St Paul Sandwich (fried egg foo young patty on two slices of white bread some with vegetables or meats) Slinger (StL tradition with eggs, hash browns, and hamburger patty all covered with chili then onions and cheese) Thin crust pizza... as an appetizer if not used to it Toasted Ravioli (Deep fried and served with Marinara sauce) Gooey Butter Cake- far richer than you can imagine Frozen custard is decadence in what looks like soft serve ice cream, but much richer Jump in an don't count calories! Awesome bars/pubs. Worst part of St. Louis is the present day crime and the loss of jobs. We moved away after a plant closing and scarce employment opportunities. As a result, crime has escalated. It doesn't help the amount of people there feeding off the system and then causing turmoil in the streets. A real shame for the city.
