The artwork shows Geppetto, the well-known carpenter from the Pinocchio story, holding a hammer above the puppet's head. At first, it might look playful or cartoon-like, but the scene feels more complicated the longer you look. Is Geppetto angry, or is he about to bring Pinocchio to life? The puppet gazes up at him with a mix of trust and worry, adding to the tension. Otterness often uses simple, familiar characters to explore deeper ideas, and this piece is no different. It makes you think about the bond between a maker and what they create - who holds the power, who gets to decide, and how care and control can overlap. Ill be honest and admit when me and my family stumbled upon this sculpture in august 2018 I did not make that connection. But the sculpture was very alluring and my kids was fired up to take a photo op with the sculpture. Overall very cool medium sized sculpture in a downtown Saint Louis area full of fun and cool sculptures. Located just a short walking distance from the famed gateway arch as well.

When my family and I stumbled across this piece in august 2018 i immediately said "I bet that's a geek god or goddess". This bronze figure is a popular photo op for the downtown Saint Louis area and neat several other really cool sculptures and not too far of a walk from popular and famed gateway arch of Saint Louis. Overall very awesome and fun piece. Me and the family all loved it and the fun photo op that came with it.

However, she's forever in this walking stance and not getting anywhere. It's a lovely sculpture and Saint Louis has done well to include it with their public art. The caption in the sidewalk reads, "Donald Baechler. Walking Figure. (2003-2004). Bronze. Edition 1 of 3. On Loan From Gateway Foundation." Online, "Walking Figure poses motionless in front of the Gateway Foundation building, stuck forever in walking stance but never gaining any ground. The sprightly form reminds the viewer of a child's drawing of a human, with the arms and legs sticking out awkwardly from a square-like torso. The childish face of the figure grins shyly but contentedly with closed eyes as it towers above the heads of passersby, striding purposefully toward some unknown end.
